On Sunday, May 19, 2013, the 150 members of the Class of 2013 celebrated their four-year accomplishments at Cor Jesu’s 54th Commencement Exercises. Margaret Dierkes Fisher, a 1994 CJ alumnae, was the keynote speaker. The Cor Jesu Academy administration, faculty and
staff congratulate the school’s newest alumnae on their contributions to the school community and the community at large. We are extremely
proud of the mark they have carved on their alma mater — congratulations, Class of 2013! “We will not forget your spirit true!”

CJA 2014 Service Trip
Sophomore Accepted into
Missouri Scholars Academy
Sophomore Kathryn Buscher was accepted to the
Missouri Scholars Academy—a three-week summer
program held at the University of Missouri-Columbia
for her academic achievements. The Missouri Scholars
Academy is an academic program for 330 of Missouri’s
gifted students, who are entering their junior year in
high school. The academy is a residential program held

on, and partially funded by, the campus of the University
of Missouri-Columbia. The 2013 program will run from June 9-29.

For the past few years, CJ has spent
Spring Break in Appalachia, helping
families repair homes. Based on feedback from students who have attended
or would like to attend, the summer
months provide more flexibility versus
making the trip over spring break. As
we look to the service opportunities for
2014, we’d like to also get your feedback
from a parent perspective.
We are considering working with the
organization, Center for Ministry
Development, a Catholic agency with
many years of organizing service learning
experiences based on Catholic Social
Teachings. Center for Ministry Development offers weeklong service experiences in the United States called “Young
Neighbors in Action,” and information
can be found on their website: www.
youngneighbors.org. This trip would
replace the spring break trip.
Cor Jesu Service Trip 2014 Possibilities
We are considering two service trip
options during the summer of 2014
working with Young Neighbors in
Action and additional information
about each option is detailed in the
2014 Cor Jesu Service Trip Survey.
If you and your daughter are interested in either or both of these service
trips, please respond to the survey
questions by June 30, 2013. Your
input is very important to us!
Whatever your response, you are under
no obligation, nor are you guaranteed
a spot on the Service Trip team. Formal
application for the trip will begin in
September 2013.

A New Look for the
Counseling Department
As part of CJ’s Strategic Plan, the Counseling Department will be expanding its focus
for 2013-14, providing a more comprehensive counseling and college-application
approach for our students.
Throughout the past school year, the
administration and Counseling Department met with parents of present students
and alumnae, surveyed students and
parents and formed a task force that
studied the current structure of the department and offered suggestions for change.
As a result from the input gathered, the
Counseling Department has adopted a new
counselor model that will begin this fall.
Under the new model, the Counseling
Department will have a total of four
counselors — two, whose focus will be on
wellness, transition and the health and development of our students, and two who will
concentrate on college counseling, meeting
with college and university reps and visiting colleges and universities to share the
profile of CJA and develop relationships
with the respective admissions officers. This
new approach will aid Cor Jesu’s students
as they work with their counselors in the
college-application process.
We are excited about this new model and
will be sharing more information with you
in August when the new school year begins.
New Cafeteria Service
Provider for 2013-14
Beginning with the 2013-14 school
year, HMG Culinary Services will
be providing cafeteria services for CJ
students. Any remaining balances
on meal cards from 2012-13 will
be credited towards your daughter’s
account with the new company.

teacher and for the last 14 years as a counselor, will retire from CJ and continue with
her private practice and spend time with family and friends.
MRS. PAMELA RITTERLING, who has been at CJ for three years as the academic
support person in the Student Learning Center, will move to Ohio with her husband
and continue her ministry of supporting students as they learn.
We thank these special women for all that they have shared with the CJ community
and pray that the Sacred Heart of Jesus will bless each of them and their families!

Corde Players Celebrate Another Successful Year!

On Tuesday, May 14, the Corde Players celebrated the school year and all of the
wonderful events and memories we have made. Everyone came dressed in costumes,
and the board even came dressed up as our directing team from the spring musical!
After dinner was served, the Academy Awards were passed out, including ones for
best male actor in the fall play, best female actress in the spring musical, funniest
moment in fall play, most dedicated Corde Player, funniest Corde Player and more.
The banquet was the best way to finish off the school year and enjoy one more evening with our fabulous seniors!

Week. The counselors went into
every theology class to discuss suicide
prevention and awareness, as well
as brainstorming ideas on how to
promote kindness in our community.
It was a school-wide effort again this
year, and it was truly a testimony to
the caring community here at CJ!
Freshman Field Trip

On May 15, the freshmen took their
biology lesson out of the lab and
to the zoo as a fun and educational
extension to the animals and ecology
unit which is studied by all freshmen
in the last weeks of the biology

Two Cor Jesu Seniors Sign Letters of Intent for Collegiate Sports

on Tuesday, May 14, to play collegiate athletics: Mary Kate Faust,
a member of the 2013 CJ volleyball
team, will return to the court next
year to play for Rockhurst, and
Katie Thieret, who will play volleyball for Roger Williams University
Class of 2013 Outstanding Athletes
The freshmen attended their choice
of one of the following presentations while at the zoo: Biodiversity,
Comparative Anatomy of Vertebrates, Genetic Conservation, Zoo
Careers–Zoo Veterinarian, Zoo
Careers–Animal Nutrition and Study
of Animal Behavior. The classes were
held in the Education department of
the Living World facility. Numerous outstanding athletes in the Class of 2013 will continue their athletic
prowess at college — three in volleyball, two in field hockey, two in soccer, one in
swimming and one in gymnastics. The following athletes have been recognized for
outstanding performances on and off the field of competition. Kathleen Golterman
was selected as the St. Louis Post-Dispatch Scholar Athlete. Kathleen was a two-sport
athlete, who was part of the 2012 State Soccer Championship Team and the 2012
Midwest Field Hockey Championship. Alena Hegger, a field hockey and track-andfield two-sport athlete, and Caitlyn Slattery, a softball and track-and-field athlete,
were recognized for their outstanding sportsmanship with the Missouri State High
School Athletic Association Sportsmanship Award. Molly Burke was the final line
of defense as the goalie for the Midwest Field Hockey Championship Team. She
also qualified for the State Championship in swimming her junior and senior seasons. Molly, a National Merit Finalist, received the Army Reserve National Scholar

The Cor Jesu Athletic Department bestowed special
recognition to senior, Laura Milles, at the 2013 Honors
Convocation. In the day and age of sports specialization,
Laura has accomplished something unprecedented at CJ.
She has competed in three sports for all four years of her
high school career. This alone is a feat that has not been
achieved for decades. What makes Laura even more outstanding is that all three teams she has competed on have
made it to the State Championship. As a member of the
2012 Soccer Championship Team, the 2012 Midwest Field Hockey Championship
Team and the 2013 Basketball Final Four Team, Laura was selected as the South
County Athlete of the Year. Cor Jesu Athletic Department has recognized Laura’s
contributions by creating the “Laura Milles Outstanding Athlete Award.” This award
will be given to any Cor Jesu student athlete who participates in three sports for all
four years at Cor Jesu. Laura’s intense dedication to her sports will not be forgotten. Members of the 2013-14 Student Council
During the summer, students look forward to pools, sleeping in and the absence of homework. Some students, however, are
already thinking about the next school year and how they want to participate. The following students have been elected to

Science Department Attends STEM Conference
From May 15-18, the science department faculty attended the National Science Teachers
Association (NSTA) STEM Forum and Expo that was held in St. Louis. The faculty attended
sessions on a variety of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math) topics and explored
new products. All science disciplines were represented, giving the faculty new insights in the

On May 8, The CJ community gathered
to honor Mary as Queen of the Universe
and Queen of our hearts, as representatives chosen by students crowned our
statue of the Blessed Mother. Together
we prayed the Rosary and recited an Act
of Consecration to the Blessed Mother.

and all who are listening carefully to discern if God is calling them to religious life.

Our Holy Father Pope Francis — Pope
Francis is taking only one international trip
this year: to Brazil, the world’s most populous Catholic country, where he will visit
slums, prisons, and hospitals treating AIDS
patients. Francis, who has said he wants
to make concern for the poor a hallmark
of his papacy, will visit the Manguinhos
slum in Rio de Janeiro on the fourth day
of his July 22-29 trip to the world’s largest
Catholic country.

and stylist Missy Alessi, who donated their
time and skills to IMPEL’s Haircuts for
Love event on May 1. The Cor Jesu

CJ Spirit Stop
Thank You!
Thanks to the moms who faithfully
showed up each month to work their
lunch time slots and to the moms on
the Special Events team, who gave up
evenings and weekend days to staff
our store. Most especially, thanks to
Jackie Spellmeyer, who spent countless hours over the past five years as
co-chair of the Spirit Stop. There is
a lot of behind-the-scenes work that
goes into making the Spirit Stop run
well, and Jackie has been responsible
for much of it.

Cor Jesu Choirs “Wow” the Audience at Spring Concert!
The Cor Jesu Music Department had successful performances at the Spring Concert. Held on April 25
at the Skip Viragh Center for the Arts at Chaminade, the concert featured Concert Choir, Freshman
Choir, Chamber Choir, Show Choir, and the State Ensembles and Soloists. The evening was full of
entertaining songs including “One Day More” from Les Miserables, to a pop mash-up written by our
very own Anna Marie Cruzen ’13. In addition, a special collaboration on two pieces between the
Concert Choir and De Smet’s Choir made it a very memorable evening. Congratulations to the
Cor Jesu Music Department and all our young musicians!

Installation of New Flag Poles
The Cor Jesu Fathers’ Club had one
final service project as we closed out the
2012-13 school year. Flag poles were
installed in front of the gymnasium

Joe Vitale (Kara ’14) and Vitale Construction for their assistance in this project.
The Fathers’ Club was very grateful to
Mr. Vitale for his offer to dig the holes and
pour the cement! Check out the newly
installed flag poles with the American
flag and CJ banner flying high the next
time you visit the campus.

It’s been an honor to lead the Cor Jesu
Fathers’ Club over the past school year.
As a seven-year CJFC member, I can say
without reservation that the Fathers’ Club
provided great memories, camaraderie and
a lasting dedication to CJA. From service
projects and fellowship opportunities to
attending CJFC events with my daughters
(Molly ’10 and Anne ’13), I will always
View AP Tests Scores Online
Once again, Cor Jesu had a record number of students take Advanced Placement
(AP) tests at Cor Jesu. This year, AP results will be posted online only from the
College Board. Students must create a College Board account in order to access their
AP scores online in July 2013. Please have your daughter sign up for a free College
Board account at www.apscore.org as soon as possible. If students have registered
for the SAT or participated in other College Board programs, they may already have
an account and can simply sign in. Students who have a College Board account will
receive email updates about how and when they can access their scores.
Students will need to provide their AP number in order to view their scores online
and send scores to colleges. Their AP number was provided to the students at the
time of testing on a tear-off card included in their student packs. They must keep
this in a safe place in order to access their scores in July. We look forward to having
the students receive their results this summer.
Students who provided their email address on the AP test will receive a notification
when their AP scores are available. treasure the experiences and friendships
along the way. I would like to take
this opportunity to thank my fellow
Fathers’ Club officers, board members,
chairs, co-chairs and volunteers for their
dedication in making 2012-13 another
successful year. Special thanks to our
advisor, President Sr. Barbara Thomas,
for her continued support and prayers.
We now pass the torch to the next
group of dads, dedicated to the mission
of enhancing the academic, spiritual
and social lives of CJA students through
service, fellowship and creating memorable moments to share with our daughters. My best wishes for carrying on
