“This is probably the best laid out program
I have seen in 30 years of teaching.
Through the interactive component, the
kids are able to apply the concepts to
their own lives. The tasks integrate well
with language, the arts, science, health
and computer skills. That demonstrates
what an incredible program it truly is!”

WHO IS BONES?
Students learn about taking care of their
bones through the story of Agent BONES,
who is from another planet. He’s on a
secret mission to Earth to find a cure for
a disease that makes his bone hair brittle
and unmanageable. His human sidekick,
Alex – and your students – help him on
this mission.
Did You Know?
Girls’ bones grow the fastest
between the ages of 11 and 14
and boys’ bones between
13 and 17.
Did You Know?
40% of our bones are built
during adolescence, making it the
most critical time to get enough
bone-building nutrients.
Did You Know?
Healthy eating and physical activity
tend to decrease as kids progress
through the elementary school years,
so it’s important to reach them in
grade 5 to prevent this decline.
WHAT IS POWER4BONES?
WHAT’S SO GREAT ABOUT
POWER4BONES?
Power4Bones (P4B) is designed to respond to research that shows Ontario
kids aren’t eating well enough, or getting enough physical activity, to keep
their bones strong.*
It’s
IT’S TEACHER FRIENDLY!
Education and health promotion theories have been combined to create
an effective, high-quality program that will engage students’ multiple
intelligences through a variety of activities and learning styles.
Power4Bones was developed in close collaboration with a Provincial
Advisory Committee, youth experts, creative designers, teachers and
other education experts, parents and – most importantly – STUDENTS
themselves!

Fun and...
“As a teacher of Grade 5 students, I wish to
thank you so much for this very excellent
program. My students were interested,
engaged and keen to participate in all of
the activities. I will register my students
again next year. Well done!”
The program is flexible – as much or as
little of the program can be
worked into class time as a
teacher desires. Everything
is laid out and ready for
teachers to use in a
comprehensive teacher
guide, including curriculum links, rubrics
and worksheets. Teachers can establish
a student P4B Squad to help run
the program and build
student leadership skills.

IT’S CROSS-CURRICULAR!
Power4Bones USES Several
KEY LEARNING STRATEGIES:
Interactive Web
Challenges*:
Students complete one Web challenge per
week (four in total).
Challenges help students improve their
knowledge of the link between bone health,
nutrition and physical activity.
*NOTE: The student section of the Power4Bones Web
site will never link to external sites.
Series of seven
Comic Episodes:
Comics that refer to students’ own schools
introduce the weekly bone health themes
and BONES’ secret mission on Earth.
Graphic novel style reading helps keep
students engaged.
Public Service
Announcement
(PSA) Challenge:
P4B helps teachers meet a variety of
Ontario Grade 5 curriculum expectations,
while students apply their knowledge to
the “real-life” scenarios of bone-healthy
eating and physical activity.
IT’S FREE!
The entire program will arrive in your
classroom – in a SECRET BOX at the
beginning of January 2009. The box
will be filled with a variety of exciting
materials with specific instructions for
the P4B Squad and teachers on how
and when to use them, including:
• Comprehensive teacher guide
• Student prizes
• Earth agent ID badges with secret
Web challenge access codes
• CD of weekly classroom
announcements
• Bone-health parent guide
• Even a pack of photocopy paper!

Questions?
Feel free to call us or visit the
Power4Bones Web site.
As a culminating activity, students apply and
synthesize their learning by designing a PSA
to share with their peers.
Minimum Computer Requirements
All participating P4B classes will have the
opportunity to submit PSAs to a provincial
competition and be eligible to win school
prizes!
P4B includes Web-based components, so it is recommended that the computers participants
will use meet some minimum requirements. If you’d like to learn more about this or test the
computers to see if they have the necessary components and software, visit our test page at
www.power4bones.com/testMyMachine
If you have specific questions regarding the results of the test page, visit
www.power4bones.com/contact and we’ll get back to you.
Power4bones is a flexible curriculum-integrated program.
As much or as little of the program can be worked into class time as the teacher likes. Here are
some guidelines, however, on the timeframe for implementation to maximize student learning.
