Last year’s abundantly wet conditions had us believing that all of our plants were going to float
away, but this year it has been considerably warmer and drier, especially in central and southern
California. While these dry hot spells of winter can be some of the loveliest days of the year, they also serve to remind
us that we live in a mediterranean climate and should be gardening with plants best suited to our climate. To this end,
every year we have added plants that we feel are appropriate to the “California Garden”. Not all of these plants are
from mediterranean climates and some may require a little supplemental irrigation, but they all perform well in our cool
moist winters and warm dry summers. This year we have greatly expanded our succulent offerings and continue to
work with individuals, other nurseries, and botanic gardens to introduce exciting new succulents and other plants that
grow well in our climate. We have also added more aquatic plants for those small oases of water that can make a
garden so much more soothing. These new plants are listed in the back of our catalog on page 50. Following our new
plant list are lists of plants native to California and other mediterranean climate regions. More information on our plants,
often with pictures, is available on our website at www.smgrowers.com. The staff of San Marcos Growers looks
forward to working with all of our customers to make 2006 another excellent year in horticulture.

Phormium Cultivars
New Zealand Flax are large strap-leafed evergreen perennials in the genus Phormium. Phormium has two species.
Phormium tenax, the Coastal Flax, is the larger and more common plant in cultivation; its long strap leaves in
shades of green, bronze and maroon are a familiar sight to gardeners in California. The Mountain Flax, Phormium
cookianum (P. colensoi), is a smaller, more graceful plant that has been gaining popularity in California. Both of
these plants are useful and attractive in the right situation, but the real gems are the colorful cultivars.
Cultural Notes
Cultural practices for the flax hybrids are similar to those for the species with a few exceptions. As a general rule
the hybrid flax are not as durable as Phormium tenax and are usually less tolerant to extremely hot or cold
temperatures, prolonged dry conditions and heavy soil. Sunburn is more likely on the cultivars that have the
graceful weeping leaves; cold temperatures below 20° F are likely to scorch the leaves of these plants as well. In
hot inland valleys it would be wise to use these cultivars in bright shade where there is protection from the sun. The
upright growing cultivars are affected less by these temperature extremes and most can tolerate direct sun.
Although we have found the hybrids to be nearly as drought resistant as Phormium tenax, they look much better
with occasional irrigation. There is a tendency for the slower growing hybrids to languish in poor heavy soil. If
possible, position plants on a slope or mound when given this soil condition. Phormium plants suffer from few other
maladies. Occasional mealybug attacks need to be controlled through sprays, and snails that often use the
underside of the leaves for an abode, can be easily picked off or treated.
Size
Determining the ultimate size of the new cultivars of New Zealand flax is an issue that we have been dealing with
since we first started growing these plants. We have continuously updated our size data as our experiences and
observations dictated but, in general, have found that these plants all get much larger than we originally expected
and we are now suspicious of the listed heights of any new cultivar we receive, especially if we are told it will remain
under 3 feet tall - it will no doubt get larger!
Color Stability
The most serious complaint we have on the hybrid flax is the tendency of the colorful leaf forms to revert back to a
green or bronze color. When a shoot of an unwanted color is seen on a hybrid plant, this shoot should be cut off at
the base. With some of the hybrids it is the new foliage that is the showiest, and it is often best to remove all of the
older leaves as the new ones emerge. Some gardeners in New Zealand feel that an occasional feeding with
phosphorus fertilizer helps keep colors vibrant and we have also found this beneficial. In the individual listings that
follow we have indicated the color forms that are least likely to revert by noting them as "Stable". If diligence is
used, even the plants most likely to revert can be kept to their original color. It should be noted that not all of the
shoots with a different color than the original plant are detrimental; Phormium 'Cream Delight', one of the showiest
of all of the cultivars, was a vegetative sport from Phormium 'Tricolor'.
Flowering
New Zealand Flax are rarely grown for their flowers, as it is the colorful foliage or striking form that is of primary
interest, however the flowers are not only showy but also attract nectar seeking birds. Not all Phormium cultivars
bloom regularly but many will flower in the garden in late spring or early summer. The flowers on Phormium tenax
and many of the hybrids are orange-red and held upright on a tall stalk above the foliage. Phormium cookianum,
and the hybrids more closely aligned with it, have greenish-yellow flowers that are held horizontally on an arching
flower stalk. The fruit that follows is also quite different: P. tenax has its woody bean-like fruit held upright and P.
cookianum has twisted dangling fruit. The flowers and dried fruit of both types are useful in large flower
arrangements.

Bamboo
Bamboo is a diverse group of plants with over 1,200 species ranging in size from miniatures to towering giants. It provides
food, medicine, timber for construction, the thatch for roofs and basketry and beauty for the garden. Planting bamboo brings
with it responsibilities and garden chores. One should remember that bamboo can grow rapidly and many spread by
underground rhizomes. Barriers for rhizomes are best installed prior to planting. It is also the bamboo gardener's
responsibility not to allow their plants to recklessly wander into neighboring yards. Not much care is required to maintain
bamboo plants but they can create dense clumps that look better when thinned occasionally. Have patience, as bamboo grow
quickly only after they have established their root system, which may take several years. The spread and growth rate of
bamboo is proportional to irrigation and fertilizer applications; faster growth is attained with frequent watering and application
of a high nitrogen fertilizer. For more information, check our bamboo pages at www.smgrowers.com/info/bamboo.asp.
We grow the following varieties of Bamboo:

Terms and Conditions
Terms
All orders will be C.O.D. upon delivery unless a prior account has been established. We do accept Visa and MasterCard. Credit
is available to established businesses based on the following terms:
1) All accounts are due and payable 30 days after the date of invoice.
2) Overdue accounts will be subject to a service charge of 1.5% per month or 18% per annum.
3) San Marcos Growers retains the right to deny further credit on overdue accounts.
Conditions
This price list cancels all previous editions and quotations and is intended for the trade only. All prices are quoted F.O.B. our
nursery. Prices are subject to change without notice.
Non-Warranty
San Marcos Growers will exercise care to have all merchandise true to name, and makes no further warranty, expressed or
implied, as to the variety or productivity of any nursery stock sold. Under no circumstances will San Marcos Growers be held
liable for more than the invoice price at the time of purchase. No liability is assumed by the Seller for the delay or failure to deliver
as a result of conditions and all instances beyond control. If the Buyer does not accept the goods on these terms, they are to be
returned to the Seller immediately.
Hold Orders
Orders for future delivery or pick up will be held and guaranteed for no longer than 2 weeks.
Claims
All claims for any reason must be made immediately upon the receipt of goods. If an error has been made, please notify us
promptly and we will make an adjustment. We do not guarantee the longevity of plants and will only accept returned goods for full
credit when notified within 5 days after delivery.
Returned Stock
Accepted nursery stock returned within 30 days of invoice or shipping date will be subject to a 20% restocking fee. No return
nursery stock will be accepted after 30 days. Plants removed from their pots or otherwise planted will not be accepted for return.
All requests for San Marcos Growers to pick up plants must be authorized by a San Marcos Growers Sales Representative.
Information needed for a pick up order to be issued includes the invoice number, the quantity, type and size of the plant material
to be picked up and the reason the plants are to be returned. The drivers will not pick up plants without prior authorization.
Certified Nursery
San Marcos Growers is certified and inspected by the California Department of Agriculture. Our California Nursery Stock
Certificate number is D-6799. This assures that plant material is free from injurious plant pests and disease symptoms and may
be released for shipping and planting in California without further inspection unless order is blue-tagged. San Marcos Growers is
in compliance with California Department of Agriculture and blue tags orders containing Glassy-winged Sharpshooter hosts. Our
compliance number is GWSS-42004. All blue tag orders must be inspected by your county agricultural department upon delivery.
Please consult your agricultural department officials for local restrictions. Recent regulations have been enacted by the USDA to
prevent the spread of the Sudden Oak Death (SOD) pathogen Phytophora ramorum. San Marcos Growers is inspected regularly
by our local Agricultural Commissioner's office and we have never had this pathogen found on our property. We are authorized to
ship plant material interstate certified under APHIS 7CFR301.92 with the California compliance number: 42D6799001.
Deliveries
Regular deliveries are scheduled along the north/south coast from San Diego to southern Sonoma County. Please consult the
chart on the next page regarding shipping rates for your area. Drivers are instructed to deliver plant material only as far as they
can safely drive the delivery truck and to place plants no further than 15 feet away from the truck. San Marcos Growers will give
an estimated time of arrival (ETA) for deliveries but they are, as implied, only estimates and we will not be held responsible for
any costs incurred by receiver for orders that are not delivered at the time that has been estimated. On deliveries where boxed
trees or cement pots are to be delivered, on-site help will be required to help remove these items from the truck. Prices in this
catalog for 36 inch boxes are F.O.B. - if delivered they are subject to an additional delivery fee surcharge. The delivery of 36 inch
box trees will require that a fork lift or tractor be present at the delivery site.
Truck Size Limitations
We use tractor trailer rigs for most of our out of town deliveries. They are 13½ ft tall by 45 ft long with 3 axles and they are heavy.
Our drivers are instructed to use their best judgment about whether or not a delivery can be made. Please let us know if there are
any potential difficulties for our delivery trucks at the delivery site.
