Manatee County Parks and Natural Resources is celebrating

in the costume contest, face painting, hayrides, bounce houses, and an 18’ inflatable slide. A $5
wristband is sold for children to participate in activities. Parental participation is free.
In addition to the above, several local businesses will be participating by passing out “treats &
sweets” to participants, providing a safe alternative for children to trick-or-treat.

Letter From Director
Hello Friends,
We’re getting ready to ring in a new year, and for our
Department this means that we look forward to a year
filled with positive changes and growth. Recently, the
structuring of the Department changed as we were reorganized to merge with the County’s Natural Resources
Department to become the Parks and Natural Resources
Department. We bid a fond farewell to longtime Parks
Director Cindy Turner, thanking her for her hard work, as
the leadership of the entire program transferred to Natural
Resources Director Charlie Hunsicker.
With the combination of the two Departments into one,
we look forward to bringing you exciting new programs
and opportunities, an expansion of the fledgling volunteer
program, and a continuation of the County’s conservation
ethic into the parks as well as the preserves. Look
for new programming coming to the recently opened
Conservatory and Bennett Parks, new fitness programs
occurring at the County’s preserves, a variety of different renovations and upgrades
happening at the locations you know and frequent throughout the County, and the
opening of our newest Preserve, Neal Preserve, in the spring of this year.
We’re excited to build the future of parks and preserves with your help.
Sincerely,
Charlie Hunsicker

Learn to swim utilizing the most effective
techniques. We teach a progression system that
was developed by our nation’s top swim coaches.
Students move at their own pace from one skill
station to the next. All coaches are certified by
Swim America, a national program of the American
Swimming Coaches Association. We teach infants,
preschoolers, school age children and adults.
Class sizes are limited to five students per coach.

Class Descriptions
Parent/Child Classes (6 month - 3 years)
It is never to early to introduce your infant or
toddler to the water. In this class the goal is to
build a high comfort level in the water for young
swimmers. The course does not teach toddlers to
swim, but instead to be comfortable in the water at
all times. One parent or trusted guardian must be in
the water with the child at all times.
Age Group Lessons - Ages 3 years and older
Children ages three and older will begin in our
progression program where they work through 10
levels. This program starts children out with the
most basic swimming skills as the progress at their
own pace and advance through the levels as they
learn the skills.

Class Descriptions
Cardio Classes
Body Sculpt - Change your body using focused body building techniques and in the process learn
a proper safe form for resistance training. In addition, become familiar with a series of stretches that
address common flexibility and postural issues.
Cardio Strength - A fun and upbeat aerobic class. Cardiovascular exercise mixed with bouts of
strength exercises to tone your muscles and burn those calories.
Cycle and Spin - Nothing beats an indoor cycle or spin workout! This is a low impact, high intensity
fitness workout where you can burn 400-600 calories. You’ll climb hills, pass riders on the flats, and
perform drills while listening to great music and being indoors. Our classes welcome members of all
levels. Be sure to bring a towel and water bottle.
30/30 - 30 minutes cycling and 30 minutes of ab work.
Gentle Aerobics - Energize through exercise. Find yourself more toned, trim, and flexible while
having fun exercising with your friends and neighbors. It’s easy to move to music of old familiar
favorites and some cool new tunes.
Strengthen and Lengthen - 45 minutes of toning, strengthening, and stretching exercises.
Sculpt and Burn - Burn off calories while shaping and toning your body and sharing a few laughs.
Mind/Body Classes
Butts N’ Guts - You do not want to miss this complete core workout. Make your “powerhouse”
stronger with this fun and amazing workout.
Pilates - A system of gentle exercise performed lying down that stretches and lengthens the muscles,
and improves posture and flexibility.
Relaxation Yoga - A time out class to stretch and relax. For everyone from kids to seniors, athletes to
office workers, from sciatic troubles to tight hamstrings. The best hour of your week!
Yoga - A journey into the connection between mind, body and spirit. Learn a greater understanding of
flexibility, breath and movement with this yoga practice. Don’t forget your mat.
Specialty Classes
Boot Camp - Increase your strength and cardiovascular endurance while pushing through militaryinspired workouts. In this camp you will be sure to get the total body workout you need to start feeling
stronger, leaner and healthier.
Water Aerobics - this moderate to high intensity class will make you sweat and includes a warm-up,
aerobic activities (including running, jogging, and jumping), cardio-pulmonary endurance training,
upper and lower body muscular strengthening, and stretching.
Zumba - This Latin-inspired, easy-to-follow, dance-fitness party exhilarates the senses and works all
the major muscle groups in a high-energy cardio blast that leaves you invigorated, refreshed and full
of life. Music is a fusion of Latin and International music!
Yoga-Lates - A class combining the stretching principles of hatha yoga and the core strengthening
aspects of pilates designed to improve breath, posture and flexibility for women. Excellent for
relieving stress. Beginner to intermediate.

coordinating, calorie-burning, stress-busting game always keeps enthusiasts
coming back for more. G.T. Bray’s eight open-air racquetball courts offer an
excellent venue to play hard and get fit.
Visit our Pro Shop for gear and racquet stringing.
Lobster Elite Ball Machine
Do you need a very forgiving and patient practice partner to help you hone
your new strokes? Our new Lobster Elite ball machine is just the thing.
Battery powered, the Lobster Elite is the ideal training device because it is
able to deliver a variety of shots with consistency. The Elite’s heavy top and
backspin will give you that “competitive edge” to reach new heights in your
game. It has a 150-ball capacity and can eject balls at 20 to 80 MPH with
feeds every 2-12 seconds. It also includes a random, left to right oscillation,
striking six different spots on the court. This feature allows you to practice
alternating forehand and backhand shots. Only for use on our hard courts,
the Lobster Elite is available for your use at just $13 per hour, plus daily fee.
Racquet Stringing Service
Just as significant as the pressure in your car’s tires, the tension in your
racquet strings change due to many factors. Wear and movement of the
strings, along with the changing weather and atmospheric conditions, all
play a role in the resiliency of your strings. This change is gradual, so it is
often difficult to notice that resiliency and tension have been lost over an
extended period of time. As a general rule, strings should be replaced every
four months (three times per year). Our Pro Shop has an excellent reputation
for stringing your racquets, often with next-day service. In many cases, we’ll
even re-grip your racquet while you wait. We have a variety of strings and
grips in stock; so, stop by and let us help you evaluate the condition of your
racquet. Re-stringing ranges from $22 - $29 and re-gripping is $10.

is a spacious, challenging course located 2.7
miles from the Ellenton Outlet Mall. With no homes
bordering the course, Buffalo Creek offers a
peaceful, natural environment measuring 7,000+
yards from the back tees. Undulating Bermuda
greens, large waste areas, par threes over water,
and the ever-present breeze make for a fabulous
day of golf. Buffalo Creek also offers family-friendly
forward tees. Five teeing areas are available, from
our Championship tees at 7,003 yards to the new
forward tees at 4,339 yards.
Our 17th hole will test your strategy and skill, with
its par four dog leg right over water. This hole is
perennially voted one of the top 18 holes in the
greater Bradenton and Sarasota area. Number 6,
without a single bunker, is equally challenging. A
superb grass tee driving range facility (one of the
very best anywhere), plus spacious putting and
chipping areas, are just two key features that make
Buffalo Creek a popular and enjoyable course. The
course is easily accessed off of I-275, exit 2 (41

About The Preserves
The preserves of Manatee County offer a wonderful
variety of animals, including the snowy egret, white
ibis, gopher tortoise, and the endangered/threatened
Florida scrub jay and eastern indigo snake. The plant
communities include pine flatwoods, hardwood
swamps, xeric oak scrub, sand pine scrub, depression
marsh, dry prairie, and a cypress dome. Numerous
streams and creeks, wet weather ponds and sloughs,
and the Manatee, Little Manatee, and Braden Rivers
add to the unique and magnificent land that is
Manatee County.
Education Programs
Manatee County’s Parks and Natural Resources
Department is pleased to offer educational
opportunities within the preserves. We are continuing
to provide field trips for local Manatee County students
and have expanded our tours to include exciting new
offerings. We offer photography tours, art programs,
Wild Kids’ Weekends, family programs, bird watching
classes, lecture series, and more! These educational
programs are provided as a service to the community,
to create and nurture an appreciation of nature and the
County’s native lands.
Volunteer Opportunities
You really can make a difference! Take time to
volunteer in a preserve and make a positive impact on
the environment. You can help by removing exotic
plants, clearing trails, monitoring wildlife, or teaching
educational programs. There’s something to do for
everyone! We have opportunities for groups,
individuals, children and adults. Join our team and help
preserve the homes of native plants and animals, and
secure the land for the enjoyment of future
generations.
