Mr. Zimmer
I would like to thank the
hundreds of parents, grandparents, and other relatives who took
the time out of their busy schedules to visit BIS during American
Education Week. The children
really enjoy your visits and are
proud to show you off!
Also, thank you for supporting our book fair.
Mrs.
Stearns enjoyed everyone visiting
and looking over the wide variety
of literature available for the students.
Term 2 is well underway.
Please make sure you contact
your child’s teacher if there are
any
concerns
that arise. December is a very
busy month with
lots of rehearsals and performances. Please pay close attention
to the calendar of events so you
won’t miss one of our performances. The new school website,
www.berlinintermediate.org, will
be constantly updated for your
convenience.
As always we wish you the
very best as we enter the holiday
season. Please have a safe and
happy holiday break. We will see
you in 2011!

Step Out Walkathon
Juliana Kotsifakis, a sixth grader in Mrs. Baker's homeroom
class, has type I diabetes. She was diagnosed with the disease at the
age of three and wears an insulin pump to regulate her blood sugar as
needed. To raise funds for the American Diabetes Association, our
school held a casual day on November 5, 2010, and raised
$228.00. Members of B.I.S. also participated in the Step Out Walkathon
to show our support of both Juliana and this worthy cause.
Walkers pictured left to right are George DeGroft, Abbey Hobbs, Kristen Yingling,
Pam Yingling, Juliana Kotsifakis, Susan Baker and Frank Baker.

Understanding Physical
Changes
through Paper-Making
Dina Sbih
&
Stephanie
Jones
Students were learning about
physical changes in science.
Ms.
Palmer showed them examples of home
made paper. Each student would be
able to pull their own sheet of paper in
today’s class.
We discussed the changes that
were occurring to the paper. We tore it,
soaked it in water, blended it into pulp,
strained it in our molds, pressed it with
a sponge onto the felon, and dried it.

Physical Change of Paper through Origami
Ray Jenkins
Students folded a piece of origami paper into a Viking Helmet. To begin
the lesson, Ms. Palmer reviewed important aspects of origami. “Ori” means paper
in Japanese, and “kami” means paper; origami is the Japanese art of paper folding. Origami usually results in a fancy pattern, representation of a living thing, or
familiar object. Students also learned that it is essential to use a square piece of
paper for all origami projects. It is also helpful to use thin paper in order to make
precise folds. Students could use specialty origami paper, old magazine pages, or
wrapping paper. We also discussed the “valley fold,” a popular fold used in origami.
To conclude the lesson, students were asked “What does this origami project have to do with science?” Students quickly realized that we had changed the
paper by folding it. We began with a piece of paper, and ended with one, but it had
changed in size and shape. Mrs. Pettolina explained that their next unit is
“Physical Changes.” Students listed other things we could do to alter the paper,
and physically change it; we could tear it, cut it, curl it with a pair of scissors,
crumble it, etc…
Creating Terrapin Shells in Art Class
The fourth graders at Berlin Intermediate School raised
over $160.00 through a penny drive to donate to the Maryland
Coastal Bays. Students culminated their fund raising efforts by
creating terrapin shells in Art Class and wearing them on October 29th, 2010. Funds raised will help Maryland Coastal
Bay's efforts to preserve the Eastern Shore's terrapin population.
Carrie Samis, Educational Coordinator for Maryland Coastal
Bays and Bill Mahoney of Chesapeake Conservation Corp met
with children to show them a terrapin and receive the donation.
Children pictured are Hailey Ehatt, Isabella Yeager, Kevin
George, Shelby Evans, Randi Mae Brokke, Julia Miller, and BIS
Vice Principal, Tamara Mills.

American Ed Week
Special thanks to our SGA representatives and Peer Mediators
who served as hosts and hostesses to over 600 visitors during American
Education Week. Also a very special thank you to Sally Messick, our
PTA president and her helpers who sent in baked goods for the refreshment table.
“BIS Kids Helping Kids at Christmas”
SGA members and Peer Mediators will be raising money during
their lunch shifts by selling dots to place on a team wreath to help needy
students this Christmas. The sale will begin November 29th and last
through December 10th. Guidance staff, some Peer Mediators and SGA
representatives will shop for Christmas items for these students. Dots
are 25 cents each or 5 for a dollar.
WEXL Honor Cards- for 6th Grade Students

updated in the school data
base. In order for this to be done,
you must submit a completed change of address
form along with a new Proof of
Residency.
Documents that will be
accepted as Proof of Residency are; mortgage or lease

Both fifth and sixth grade
students are working on personal
fitness plans. Students need to have
their parent/guardians sign the plan,
write down or make a copy of the
plan so the students can follow the
personal fitness plan and return the
original to their P.E. teacher.
The fifth grade students are
involved in “Ball Handling” for
their fitness unit. They have been
learning how to dribble, kick, trap,
pass, throw, and catch the ball while
participating in soccer, speedball
and basketball.
The fourth grade students
just completed their football and
soccer unit, and they did an amazing
job! During American Education
week we took time to play fitness
board games. We wanted to make
sure that parents could participate in
class with their children. It was a
great success! Throughout the winter months fourth grade students will
learn basic basketball skills, some
volleyball skills, and we will also do
another fitness unit.
In January/February we
will be offering After School Volleyball and Floor Hockey through the
After School Academy. If your child
is interested please see Mrs. Mills to
register.

Healthy Tip: Did you know
that many snacks sold in vending
machines are high in sugar and fat?
These snacks can make you gain
weight and feel tired. Sugary snacks
can hurt your teeth. Sometimes
there are smart foods hiding in the
machines with all the junk foods.
Look carefully and make good
choices!!!

BIS & Beyond
Afterschool
Academies
The Academies have been
very successful and fun thus
far! I know that sometimes, students do not always get the
classes that they first requested. It is imperative that students return the form within the
first two days of registration.
There are a lot of students that
want to participate and only a
certain amount of money to pay
staff to teach and supervise. Feel
free to put down a child's second
choice if you wish.
PLEASE communicate
with the school about your child's
afterschool transportation. If you
are going to change transportation, the school must be notified. If your child changes transportation and the school is not
notified, we cannot assure your
child's safety, which is our main
concern!
Parents, you will notice
that Session III is heavily academic to help students prepare
for the upcoming Maryland
School
Assessments
(MSA). Many academies will
also be by invitation only,
to assist students who need to
strengthen specific skills.
Thank you for all of your
continued support and understanding as BIS continues to
strive to provide a quality program, while trying to accommodate as many students as possible.
Thank you, Mrs. Mills
