Firstly we’d like to thank Pauline Watson for having chaired SAW for so many
years with such attentive and detailed care. It’s a complex ship to helm and she
has steered SAW with great skill and ambition. We look forward to her continued
contributions to the board.
This year is Open Studios - a chance for visitors to see the heart of Somerset’s
creativity. There is a huge variety of work out there to see and an equal variety
of people and places to visit. It’s a chance for you to explore!

Friends of SAW Committee
How dull our lives would be without the visual arts. It is therefore important that we support our
Somerset artists, as many of you kindly do.
During the past year the combined contributions from our Friends and Corporate Friends has directly
enabled SAW to offer bursaries, prizes, sponsorships and placements to graduates and emerging artists.
A career in the arts is a precarious journey and this support really does make a difference.
Seek out the hidden studios, find secret masterpieces; it’s a good time to buy
at artists’ prices too.
Being a Friend of SAW is a direct way for people who enjoy art to become involved. As a Friend you
receive invitations to Friends events, private views of the works of SAW members, a copy of the annual
Guide and regular information. As an extra thank you, Friends names are entered into a Prize Draw 4
times a year providing the chance of winning an original piece of art work kindly donated by a
SAW member.
Open Studio is an opportunity to talk to the makers, discussing techniques
and theories. Open studios, open minds.
The generous support of our Corporate Friends Scheme has been of great benefit in helping SAW fulfil its
commitment to promoting and developing the visual arts in Somerset.
Lastly take the chance to really get to know Somerset: the extraordinarily varied

Special Projects
Welcome to Somerset Art Weeks 2012. The event features 221 venues this year
with more than 300 artists taking part. Each year, we promise to take the Open
Studios event to a new level, by showcasing some of the new commissions and
projects SAW have initiated, organised and/or curated, alongside the diverse
range of work presented by artists in Somerset.
Studio Works
Artists in their creative space
Welcome to our world! From the field nearby, to the garden, from the purpose built studio, to the kitchen
table just to name a few examples keeping the creativity alive. In Somerset, there are a very small number
of professional studio spaces and public galleries for artists and yet, the artistic community is thriving. Open
Studios gives the public an insight into how the artists work and are inspired. To celebrate this, 11 artists
were invited to work with our guide designer Chantelle Henocq, graduate photographer Sebastian King
and Somerset based writer David Davis, to produce a collection of images that are incorporated in the guide
and other publicity materials. Participating artists are Amanda Khan-Davis, David Brayne, Emma Scott,
George Foweraker, Jane Brayne, Jane Mackey, John Candler, Melanie Moulding, Pauline Rooke,
Simon Ledson and Val George. Larger scales of the images will be exhibited at The Brewhouse Theatre
& Arts Centre. For details please see Venue 138 p53.

Studio Open
Artists Exchange and residency
In collaboration with SVA in Stroud and supported
by Reveal Somerset, the Brewhouse turns into a
temporary artist studio to host resident artist
Eunju Yoo from Stroud and Hazel Holman,
an emerging artist from Somerset. A short film
documenting the Somerset based artist group,
Hacker Farm who carried out their residency in
the Open Studios event at SVA in May, will also be
shown. For details please see Venue 138, p53.
Flight of Crane
Exhibition inspired by The Great Crane Project
As part of the on-going partnership between SAW
and The Great Crane Project, we collaborate
with Somerset Crafts, an artists’ co-operative,
to present an exhibition featuring a wide range
of works inspired by cranes and their living
environment in Somerset. The exhibition also
features an art installation of hundreds of origami
paper cranes created by Lucy Lean in collaboration
with schools and the community. For details
please see Venue 27, p14.
Maximum Exposure
Bringing Contemporary Arts to Somerset
Art Weeks is an ideal opportunity for SAW to
showcase two of the Maximum Exposure
commissions, namely One to Twenty, a 13 metre
long inflatable sculpture by artists Claire Barber
and Steve Swindells and a film documenting the
Taunton Stop Line Live Project by artists Rob
and Matt Vales. For Details see p68 & 77.

Schools who wish to participate
in Art Weeks 2012
Venue 174: Unravelled
Leah Hislop performs a site-specific installation of weaving and light, alongside
the installations created by Bryony Tidball and Nina Gronw-Lewis. Interactive
weaving workshops on Saturday and Sunday; Storytelling by Jane Flood on
Saturday 22nd; and final celebration on Sunday 30th. Open daily 11am to 6pm.
The biggest county-wide visual arts festival
in Somerset, Somerset Art Weeks: Exhibitions
& Events set out to celebrate diverse range of
visual arts in Somerset. The next Event will take
place from 21st September to 6th October, 2013.
The previous Festival of 2011 featured a total
of 108 venues at which more than 450 artists
participated. It successfully attracted more than
50,000 visitors.
There are many ways in which schools can
get involved in Art Weeks from simply setting a
homework activity or by visiting venues. To assist
schools to plan their activities around Art Weeks,
SAW and SPAEDA have jointly put together an Art
Weeks Education Pack specifically tailored for
schools. This pack will assist schools in obtaining
maximum benefits from the event and include all
essential information required to organise tours
and activities.
Venue 201: Everything and more
Shattering the idea of the artist’s studio by filling the venue with ideas, images,
objects and creative detritus left behind by artists previously involved in
OSR Projects. ‘Aspects of the creative process that usually remain hidden
are disclosed revealing everything and more.’ Wed to Sat 11am to 6pm,
Sun 11am to 4pm.

where more than 3 artists take part. Criteria
and registration process will be posted on SAW

September 2012 onwards.
Event Snippet
SAW have encouraged artists to expand their horizons in
contemporary art making for many years. SAW recognise
many of these activities are not financed by selling activities
during the Open Studios event. We have highlighted some
of these events and projects whereby artists have made an
extra effort to present their new ideas to you. On reading
the guide you will find more.
Venue 01: David Davies
Invites the public to take part in his collaborative poetry about Open Studios.
Visit the website in advance and give your views. Tue to Sun, 11am to 6pm.
Venue 20: Dove Studios
Visit the most established printmaking studio in Somerset. Artists Bronwen
Bradshaw, Tony Martin and Pennie Elfick are working in the studio and
will talk about their work on Saturday 22nd September, 2-4pm.
Venue 88: The Engine Room
Somerset Film presents ‘archive for the future’ programmes made with
volunteer community chroniclers during the past few years. An ideal opportunity
for you to get hands on with cameras and recorders. Mondays 17th & 24th,
Wednesdays 19th & 26th, Fridays 21st & 28th September from 10am - 4.30pm
including Saturday 22nd September 10am - 2pm.
Venue 110: Story Walk
4 GPS walks in scenic Exmoor with a spin. Visit website www.storywalks.info
in advance to download the app and walking route. You will find a hidden box
at the end of the walk and you will be asked to sign and hide again for the
next visitor.
Venue 122: OutOfOrder Gallery
Artist Peter Messa turns the telephone box into the smallest gallery in the county.
Visit and you will get a surprise during your journey. Thursday to Sunday, 11am
to 6pm.

Venue 125: Places to Dream In
A special art installation in a wood above Chipstable. A nest built with natural
materials that change and degrade over time by Liz Fathers and a carved four
poster bed by Jane Mowat inviting the viewer to sleep and dream amongst the
trees. Evening events of music, storytelling, singing or experience the quiet of the
wood. Wed, Fri & Sun 6 - 8pm. Visitors advised to wear good footwear.
Venue 204: Pop-up Museum
Audio-visual artist-musicians Hacker Farm occupy an empty shop at Quedam
Shopping Centre in Yeovil to create an art-space that’s part installation, part
gallery, part museum, with hand-picked objects and archive materials from
Community Heritage Access Centre in Yeovil. Workshops and performance on
Saturday 22nd September 11am to 6pm.
Venue 212: Demonstration Day
A demonstration day organised by Somerset Guild of Craftsmen who invite the
public to see makers and artists working in a wide range of medium. Saturday
16th September, 11am to 4pm.
Venue 220: Waterhole Event at Shave Farm
Visit the long-standing artists collaborative venue at Bruton. Feature artists
Rowena Pearce, Terri Hogan, Kay Lewis-Bell, Tim Millar, Colin Bell, Annie
Fry and Lin Hawkins. Special event on Saturday 15th September 11am to 6pm
with bands, cafe and creative activities, to include stonecarving, clay, printmaking.
Suitable for all ages.

Ceramics and landscape paintings. Paintings are
atmospheric, studies of the landscape. The studio
opens into the garden with space to work outside.
I make drawings and oil paintings of people; some
I know, some I don’t. Often they are outsiders but
there is always a touch of an old memory. Time
passes ever more quickly and I try to capture the
fleeting moments of almost arcadian pleasure.
Russell Coates, Hiro Takahashi
Sarah creates scarves, rugs, wall-hangings and soft
furnishings including commission work. Her textiles
are inspired by techniques that use graduated colour
to give a feeling of movement and harmony. Sal
paints with watercolour washes and glazes, using
points of stillness to create contrast, movement and
light. David’s ‘Authors of Our Work’ uses words,
images and sound. It looks at ‘collected word’
and collaborative poems that connect us to who
we are and who we will become. David’s writing
collaboration with photographer Sebastian King and
graphic designer Chantelle Henocq on Studio Works,
commissioned for Open Studios 2012, is at The
Brewhouse Arts Centre, SAW venue 138.

Directions: Take road opposite Coleford co-op, continue; turn right into
High Street, pass Mill lane, Noone Cottage is further on left.
In my recent work I want to engender the spirit of
ancient rock carvings; the mystery of the marks,
a sense of being worn by time but still discernible,
with a hidden language.
I use materials to reflect these elements and take
the work through a series of processes: dyed
grounds, batiking, collage, printing, cutting and piecing. Prices range from £90 (unframed) to £600, with
substantial reductions on older work.

Images inspired by myth and legend blended with
Sally’s quirky gothic style create an exhibition of
unique and alternative art with a twist of fantasy.
Original work, print and cards for sale. Also on
display is the jewellery Sally makes from semiprecious stones, beads, wire and vintage bits and
pieces. And hair accessories, all one-of-a-kind
pieces created with flowers, feathers and other
interesting items.

I enjoy exploring and painting intimate corners of
local as well as mediterranean gardens. Travelling
has meant smaller canvases, but they can still
accomodate lovely vistas and far horizons. This
has been a new departure, but one I shall continue
with this year. I work mostly in oil, but there are

Richard Turner
The Red Brick building is a major new educational
centre promoting arts and crafts in Somerset. During
Somerset Art Weeks, we are showing artists in
their embryonic studios with particular focus on the
relationship between art work and the space within
which it is created. Paul Branson’s paintings reflect
the Somerset landscape with simplified forms and
a heightened palette of colours. His watercolours
are mostly created by tearing up paintings executed
outdoors. Richard Pelham creates specific design
windows using opal glass and cathedral glass. He
enjoys creating windows that take the elements
presented by the house owner and the location.
Julie Avenell’s work is photography and textiles.
It’s all about pastel.
- Exhibits comprising of paintings, sketches and
monochrome preparatory work will aim to reflect the
range and versatility of this medium.
- My figurative style is inspired by light and rooted
in design.
- My materials include hand-crafted pastels, the
materials and information for making these will also
be on display. Craig Askew, Kate Chidley, Claire Springfield
Bronwen Bradshaw, Tony Martin and Pennie Elfick
exhibit paintings, prints, collages, drawings and
video. Their work has the common theme of an
abstraction that remains rooted in the world as they
experience it. Bronwen Bradshaw’s etchings
grow from random markmaking into carefully
edited series; she also makes video and books.
Tony Martin imagines spaces evoked by music and
poetry. Old trackways and Saxon architecture also
inspire his etchings and drawings. Pennie Elfick
uses observation of her environment as a starting
point. Her colours are often soft and elusive. The
artists will be working in the studios, and will give a

Unique handmade felt clothing and textiles. Sophie
uses the wet felting technique to blend wool, hemp,
flax and a variety of natural fibres. Inspired by
the colours and texture in nature, Sophie creates
sculptural clothing and abstract landscapes.
She apprenticed in Switzerland and has travelled
and exhibited in many places.Now living in Somerset
she works from her studio at home and weaves the
landscape around into her art.

celebration of local events, coast and countryside at
Middlewick Holiday Cottages.
Featured work will include printmaking, collage,
painting in oils and acrylics and ceramic pieces
which range from functional tableware to decorative

since completing his MA in fine art has a new
direction in his work; an observational study on surf
culture. An understanding of form, light, space.

Orchard Vale Trust provides residential homes
for adults with learning disabilities. Throughout
the event our workshops will be open where we
will be showing work in progress and displaying a
colourful collection of scarves in silk and wool fibre,
textured felt bags, cushions and jewellery, textile
and needlepoint items, and ceramics for indoor and
outdoor use.
Casey uses classic materials such as terracotta
clays and Porcelain; to create detailed, realistic,
figurative sculpture with a contemporary twist.
She also uses silicone and resin in a process called
cold casting, creating extremely life-like one-off
caricatures, that are sold on a commission basis.
Alongside this, Casey Produces CGI music promos,
examples of which will also be on view. Her clients
have included the RnB artists Estelle and Jessie J.

My work demonstrates the variations reflected by
using found objects along with modern materials
such as shrink plastic. I recycle vintage fabric and
mix them with funky stones and beads to create
a modern look. I also apply my own hand printed

Sarah Dalton: Contemporary textile pieces made
from chopped fabrics which have been painted, dyed
or stitched and bonded together to create layers of
texture and colour. A final layer of stitch adds further

When I put my mark on paper after so long
my imprint felt unknown
so I decided to have no plan, to work
without concept;
and only then, as the sky
gathered and billowed
in hems and tucks of ink,
did I begin to know who I was.
Anne’s FABRIC COLLAGE pictures are strongly 3D in
appearance by judicious use of net and tulle. There
is no preliminary drawing, all materials are handcut
using scissors and pinkingshears and fixed by PVA
adhesive. The results are ‘Painting and Drawing with
fabric’. Anne works to commission, mainly portraits
of houses and animals. Landscapes, foods and
personal souvenirs are also major subject areas.

earlier career as an architect.
I changed my life and one and half years ago, I came
to England. I started painting in England, before I
was never painting. After my time in India, where I
went to find a new direction in my life and practiced
yoga I felt I wanted to paint with oil colours. Painting
is my meditation. In my pictures are my feelings,
part of me. When I’m painting I don’t think what
is right and what isn’t. It’s a gift from Life – they
are special.

Julian creates bespoke furniture, interiors and
accessories to his unique designs, drawing
inspiration from the Bauhaus mantra ‘form
through function’. Pieces are enhanced with tactile
shapes and traditional detailing interpreted in a
contemporary light.The wood is finished using
organic oils to enhance the natural beauty and lustre
of the grain. A selection of work will be on display
and Julian will be on hand to explain the
techniques employed.

Angela Holland works with words. She designs
lettering to suit a particular quotation, cuts it into lino
- backwards - and prints onto damp paper using an
etching press for an embossed effect. Recently she
has begun to experiment with screenprinting.
Sue Lowe uses found materials to create richlytextured collagraphs. Her work draws on the
landscape of Western Somerset, reflecting the
patterns and textures of the coastal geology and the
colours of the seasons.

Jacki paints vibrant watercolour flower portraits,
using experimental techniques to achieve exciting
textures, also mixed media paintings including
abstract encaustic images. She also photographs
close ups of flowers, and landscapes.
Trudi specialises in Botanical flower paintings and
pet portraits using watercolours and oils. Her latest
commission is designing the Jubilee card for the
local W.I. She is also a cartoonist.
Josephine melts glass in an open flame to create
her unique lampwork beads. She combines her
beads with sterling silver, gemstones and other
materials in her beautiful jewellery designs.

organised by SAW at the Café Bar, featuring portrait

From 1st to 14th September, the gallery will present
a documentary film about Hacker Farm, a Somerset
based artist group who resident in Stroud Open
Studios event in May this year. Then from the 15th
to 29th September, during the Somerset Art Weeks,
the gallery space will become a studio for two artists:
Eunju Yoo from Gloucestershire and Hazel Holman
from Somerset. Eunju will be working with Taunton
residents through a range of workshops, interviews,
street performances and any possible methods to
create a short film exploring subject of desire and
fear. Hazel will be developing a new series of felt
and embroidered based works that are designed for
interaction with audiences. She will be encouraging
people to come, touch and talk about these new
tactile objects.

King’s College, Taunton features four members
of Somerset Contemporary Artists’ Network.
Judy: Paradoxically, porcelain is fragile,
exotic, impermeable, luxurious and essentially
indestructible. Judy exploits it in non-utilitarian ways,
evoking and subverting its traditional associations.
Linda: Nature inspires Linda’s uplifting paintings
filled with light and sparkle, reflecting landscape and
ocean in mixed-media with collage and embedded
light-reflective materials. Kristen’s paintings
are entirely intuitive, combining play, planning,
spontaneity, accident and gesture to create a mix of
order, chaos, harmony and discord that ultimately
resonates a sense of self. Susan’s paintings (also
used in textiles, book and film) explore the spirituality
of myths and legends, particularly goddesses and
animal totems.

An exhibition of new and original work displayed
within my home. These series have been crafted
and created in my studio which is situated within
the garden.
I continue to develop a unique style of contemporary
painting from the use of found materials, including
rusted metal, felt, acrylic, wallpaper, wound
dressings, linen, reused cheese cloth, leather
and velvet...all work completed with my signature
‘hand stitching’. Both artists graduated from Somerset College with
First Class Honours in June 2011.
Gill’s background in Performing Arts makes an
interest in the human form inevitable, focusing on
parts of the figure rather than the whole.
Nigel’s collages, created from individually hand-cut
pieces, reflect his fascination with the worlds of
science and space. He prefers not to influence the
viewer by titling his work, thus allowing individual
interpretation.

Charlotte & Amy have decided to team up again &
exhibit at Charlotte’s new studio which is beautifully
situated with views across the Somerset Levels.
Charlotte has been inspired by her surroundings
& painted watercolours of stunning local landscapes
in a traditional style. She will also be exhibiting her
atmospheric acrylics & vibrant mosaics. Amy uses
beautiful coloured & textured glass which inspires
her to create contemporary stained glass panels
using traditional lead & copperfoil techniques.

Contrasting geometries of the natural and
man-made worlds continue to be the basis of
my imaginative and serendipitous actions. Old and
new themes persist, often in response to visits to
historic sites at home and abroad. Imaginative
leaps across recorded time, coupled with timeless
images of the natural world, throw up surprising
outcomes expressed through painting, printmaking
and drawing. Complex pattern-making continues to
be the dominant compositional preference.

Fine artist Sarah Trevithick returns for her second
Arts Weeks and is joined by local potter and regular
Wendy Dunt. Sarah paints local landscapes in
oils and watercolours and produces a range of
unique appliqued cushions and Raggy Rouxs, her
mischievous creatures from recycled clothing.
Wendy creates a wide range of domestic ware on
her potter’s wheel, with glazes inspired by the local

The DB Group Mark & Tracy Nesbit
Contemporary art in the heart of Langport: Mark &
Tracy practice their individual talents in their studio
and garden that has fantastic views across the
Somerset Levels. Mark uses plaster and chemistry
to produce uniquely original coloured and textured
abstract paintings on canvas, Tracy uses wood,
metal and other media to produce a wide range of
work from craft items to conceptual fine art. Mark
was shortlisted for the Black Swan Arts Open Prize
Competition 2012. Most work is for sale at prices
from £10 to £1500. (We are working artists so will
be practising during art weeks from time to time and
we are happy to talk to visitors about our work.)

Using everything under the sun, including Lego
robots, mud and boot polish, staff and students from
Somerset Schools exhibit their responses to the
Great Outdoors. Taking inspiration from the recent
exhibition, “Drawing Breath” at Great Bow Wharf,
this show features work from a research project with
teachers and boys from Crispin and Huish Episcopi
secondary schools, using creative technology and
automated drawing techniques to explore the
locality. Opportunities for families and young artists
to make work in a temporary studio at the Great
Bow Wharf riverside cafe. Refreshments available.

Inspired by her surroundings, June paints in oilslandscapes, flowers and cattle on the family farm.
She uses precious metal clay to make pendants,
which are fired and polished, leaving a pure
silver pendant. (A demo will be given, if asked). In
pottery she makes bowls,vases, ovenware, trivets,
influenced by the local flora and fauna.

Hills and in Wales, France and other places abroad.

I paint in watercolour the plants that grow in my
garden, often on dreamlike or abstract backgrounds
which I then embellish with acrylic ink, pastels and

Metcalff’s wire bird and animal sculptures are

I make terracotta garden pots and sculptures which
are coiled and thrown on the wheel. They are fired
to 1100° plus using wood off cuts from a local saw
mill. The passage of flames through the kiln leaves
varied flashes of colour on the pots. Sizes range
from 20cm to 65cm, and all are frost resistant. Not Good

My work is about exploring the marks left by our
ancestors on the British landscape and investigating
ancient sites and the art of prehistoric peoples.
Materials and processes are an important part of my
practice. Carving into plaster on board, I then use
graphite, silver-leaf, and or oil paint sometimes
I leave them natural. I am hoping the viewer will
make a link through my work, into our ancient past.

throughout Somerset Art Weeks and welcome

Amanda and Karen explore nature by looking at
‘Worlds within Worlds’. Enter a Secret Garden and
find Amanda’s questioning installation in stitched
textiles and Karen’s vibrant paintings where both
artists push the boundaries of their media.This
collaborative exhibition is fun and thought provoking.

OSR Projects

Shattering the idea of the artists studio as a romantic
atelier this exhibition is a collision of ideas, images,
objects and creative detritus left behind by the
transitional artist group OSR Projects. The distinction
between where one artists work stops and another
begins dissolves. Individuality and the importance
of product over process is questioned. Aspects of
the creative process that usually remain hidden are
disclosed revealing everything and more.
Directions: Hermitage Street is the B3165 out of the town towards
Lyme Regis. Those coming on the A356 from the east can turn sharp
left into Hermitage Street; for those coming from the north on the
A356, Hermitage Street is straight on up the hill; those entering
Crewkerne from the direction of Chard need to go around the one way
system and follow the sign for Lyme Regis. Number 80 is on the right
hand side about 150 yards from the town centre and 75 yards beyond
The Royal Oak public house on the same side of the road. Entrance
to the studio is via the garden gate to the right of the property. The

An exhibition of current work by Jenny Mellings, (a
previously Devon based artist) will include paintings,
drawings, and some stop-motion animated film
sequences. The semi-figurative mostly landscape
related images often contain photographic elements
and can perhaps be said to describe places where
imagination meets perceived reality. More recently
this has encompassed words and imagery from
the realms of virtual reality and it’s influences
on contemporary life.
Angela Charles returns for her sixth Somerset Art
Weeks exhibition in this venue. Her gestural acrylic
paintings on aluminium and board are inspired by
the South West landscape. This open studio event
follows her successful summer exhibition with
Porthminster Gallery at Westcotts Quay in St Ives,
Cornwall where her paintings showed alongside
works by Victor Pasmore. A recent graduate of De Montfort University in
Leicester, I moved to Somerset in August 2011. My
work is a fusion of ideas and styles though largely
abstract based, utilising a wide range of materials
(acrylics, watercolour, plaster, metal and photography) and techniques. I draw my inspiration from
researching modern art, current socio-economic
climate and more latterly, the village and countryside
about me.

As an experimental printmaker with a ‘painterly’
style, I enjoy the excitement of the ‘accidental’
image. I often combine screen printing, etching, lino
printing, collagraphy and monoprinting. Each picture
is a unique image or part of a small edition, usually
on hand made paper. I love big skies, seas,
countryside, the human form and still life. Paintings,
collage, mixed media and sculpture also exhibited.

Riddle: when is a shop not a shop?
Answer: when it’s a Pop-up Museum.
Yeovil no longer has a museum, so let’s create
our own. For Somerset Art Weeks. Audio-visual
artist-musicians Hacker Farm will be occupying
an empty retail-outlet in Yeovil’s Quedam pedestrian
precinct to create a transient art-space that’s part
installation, part gallery, part museum.
Working in partnership with Community Heritage
Access Centre in Yeovil, Hacker Farm will cherrypick their favourite, half-forgotten moments from
Yeovil’s cultural past, juxtaposition and re-present
them for your enjoyment and delight. They will also
create a zone where QR-codes and Edwardian
ephemera cohabit with Punk Rock posters and
tractor parts, where the Present and the Past
co-mingle and gently collide to remind us what an
amazing and robust town Yeovil is.

Corinne Short: Figurative oil painter Corinne is
greatly influenced by bodily shapes and forms
in dance, circus and movement. Her primary

I always look forward to Somerset Art Weeks. It gives
me the opportunity to share with others my love of
woodturning and the excitment of discovering the
colour and grain pattern hidden in the wood. Timber
is obtained locally and I allow the wood’s natural
characteristics to influence my designs in creative
bowls, hollow forms and utility items. My workshop
and gallery will be open everyday except Mondays. Two artist friends and neighbours collaborate to
show their recent work in a small garden studio and
cottage: they share enjoyment of the rythmns of the
natural world using contrasting techniques.
Ann Fagan concentrates on printmaking and
mixed media work inspired by birds and Somerset
landscapes. Vera Sheaf’s paintings and prints are
shaped by energetic drawing and evolve from the
process of mixed media used and evocative colour.
There will be demonstrations of lino cutting and
monoprint techniques.

Fine Furniture Award Final Exhibition and
Prize Presentation
During May and June, selected work from Bridgwater
College students on the Fine Furniture course were
exhibited at the Courthouse Gallery, Somerton.
Visitors and members of the Somerset Guild of
Craftsmen were invited to vote for their favourite
pieces. 3 finalists have been selected and their work
will be on display in the Courthouse Gallery during
Somerset Art Weeks. The Prize will be presented on
Sunday 16th September, 12noon, by Tony Portus, a
nationally acclaimed furniture maker and co-founder
of Makers Eye (www.makerseye.co.uk). Please come
and see the high quality of work on display and lend
your support and encouragement to new craftsmen.

Demonstration Day
On Sunday the 16th September, members of the
Somerton Guild of Craftsmen will show their skills in
Somerton Town Centre from 11am to 4pm. A number
of crafts will be demonstrated including letter cutting,
stone carving, pottery, printing and woodwork. There
will be opportunities to ‘have a go’ and to speak to
the makers. The demonstrations will be close to the
Courthouse Gallery which will have a full exhibition of
work from Guild Members.

Firstly we’d like to thank Pauline Watson for having chaired SAW for so many
years with such attentive and detailed care. It’s a complex ship to helm and she
has steered SAW with great skill and ambition. We look forward to her continued
contributions to the board.
This year is Open Studios - a chance for visitors to see the heart of Somerset’s
creativity. There is a huge variety of work out there to see and an equal variety
of people and places to visit. It’s a chance for you to explore!

It plays an invaluable role in identifying
and celebrating a huge variety of creative
activities and projects in this county, finding
emerging artists and raising awareness of

Friends of SAW Committee
How dull our lives would be without the visual arts. It is therefore important that we support our
Somerset artists, as many of you kindly do.
During the past year the combined contributions from our Friends and Corporate Friends has directly
enabled SAW to offer bursaries, prizes, sponsorships and placements to graduates and emerging artists.
A career in the arts is a precarious journey and this support really does make a difference.
Seek out the hidden studios, find secret masterpieces; it’s a good time to buy
at artists’ prices too.
Being a Friend of SAW is a direct way for people who enjoy art to become involved. As a Friend you
receive invitations to Friends events, private views of the works of SAW members, a copy of the annual
Guide and regular information. As an extra thank you, Friends names are entered into a Prize Draw 4
times a year providing the chance of winning an original piece of art work kindly donated by a
SAW member.
Open Studio is an opportunity to talk to the makers, discussing techniques
and theories. Open studios, open minds.
The generous support of our Corporate Friends Scheme has been of great benefit in helping SAW fulfil its
commitment to promoting and developing the visual arts in Somerset.
Lastly take the chance to really get to know Somerset: the extraordinarily varied
landscape; the vigorous food and drink culture; the significant historic and
spiritual past. Somerset is a huge county with a complex cultural fabric.
