Annual Report - Montessori in Redlands
MIR 2011-2012
Annual Report
Education for Life
REFLECTIONS FROM
THE HEAD OF
SCHOOL
“The first duty of the educator, whether he is involved
with the newborn infant or the older child, is to recognize
the human personality of the young being and respect it.”
— Maria Montessori
Educating 21st Century Citizens
Our mission at Montessori in Redlands is to help children reach their potential; that is, to
help them become the person they are meant to be. Every one of our students is unique and
our job is to provide an environment in which they can grow. We want them to leave MIR
with the skills and confidence to take on their role as a citizen of our world. We are preparing
them for their future.
2011-2012 MIR Annual Report
Montessori in Redlands Education for Life
“We must help the child act,
think, and will for himself.”
—Maria Montessori
When I walk through the campus on a daily basis and ponder each child’s face, I ask myself,
“What will their future look like?” This question causes me to think about how much the
world has changed in just the past decade. Change happens so fast these days that change is
changing! Will our children be ready for what the 21st century will bring? This is a question
that educators are asking, but they are not the only ones asking them. Business leaders and
governments are also concerned about how children are being prepared for the future.
Will our children be ready? At MIR, the children provide me with the answer to this question
day in and day out — YES! Because the number one thing that we teach children that will
prepare them for their future is this — how to learn.
Each and every activity in a Montessori classroom, from Toddlers through Elementary, is
designed to demonstrate a skill, hand the appropriate materials over to the child, and allow
them to work — repeat, make mistakes, repeat again, try another way, succeed, and learn how
to best approach or use the skill the next time. They are constantly accessing information,
changing their pace, attention, and focus, analyzing their choices, thinking and adjusting, and
learning. Answers are not given, rather they are given the tools to find the answer.
Not knowing how their world will look in 10, 20, or even 30 years, we need them to leave us
with the confidence and the skills to be able to “figure it out”. MIR takes this responsibility very
seriously, creating the environment in which our students are educated as 21st century citizens.
“Where there is curiosity, there is education.”
—Arthur C. Clarke
Focus on
The 2011-2012 school year welcomed a team of
educators who served as the visiting committee
from Western Association of Schools and
Colleges (WASC), MIR’s accrediting body. The
WASC visit comes once every six years, after
the school does a detailed and comprehensive
self-study. This process begins long before
the WASC team arrives and it involves
all constituents — students, faculty, staff,
administration, parents, and Board. Although
the self-study requires a lot of intense work in
the form of meetings, analyzing data, focus
groups, and writing, this time to reflect on
what we do as a school and how well we do
it is an incredible opportunity for growth.
The WASC process was a much easier
endeavor this time around than it was six years
ago, because of MIR’s commitment to ongoing discussion, reflection, and evaluation of
its programs. Monthly staff meetings, weekly
administrative meetings, staff inservice days,
Parents and Teachers of Montessori (PTM)
meetings, yearly parent surveys, and Board
meetings, keep the various stakeholders of the
school connected and focused on what we do
for the students and how well we are doing it.
WASC has woven itself into the fabric of the
school through all these groups, providing
the framework for a “self-monitoring” system
for the various school community programs.
At the center of the self-study is the academic,
social, and personal progress of our students,
which the WASC visiting team needs to be
able to see during their three days on campus.
Our report outlined our assessment data and
talked about the various ways we measure
academic achievement. This is a daunting task
for any school, but the visiting team gave us
high marks in this area. MIR has a variety of
assessment methods and ways for students
to receive immediate and relevant feedback
about their work. Whether it is the Montessori
materials, work diaries, portfolios, discussion,
rubrics, peer editing, or tests, assessment is
on-going and meaningful, encouraging them
to do their best and strive for the next level of
achievement. The WASC team was incredibly
impressed with the level of engagement in
each class, and at every program level. They
reported to the head office that “learning is
truly taking place at Montessori in Redlands”
and recommended a 6-year accreditation term
for MIR, which WASC granted in June.
WASC was also impressed with how happy
the children were in their activities and with
the commitment level of our parents and our
staff. One of the WASC visitors asked me, “Is
everyone always this happy? Is it always this
calm?” Yes. Once again it was wonderful to
be validated in our work and hear others echo
what we already know: MIR is a wonderful
learning environment for children.
A new shade sail structure was
added to the elementary playfield.
Facilities Update
MIR was enhanced by several major renovations and upgrades to
the facility during the 2011-12 school year:
To accommodate our growing Elementary
program, Emily/Teesie’s classroom environment
was expanded to include a working loft for the
students.
The MIR administrative office was remodeled
with new paint, carpet and newly designed office
units to provide more efficient workspace.
The outdoor environment got lots of attention as well.
A new shade sail structure
was added to the elementary
playfield. Bench seating was
installed on both the main and
north campuses.
Outdoor lighting was
enhanced with new light lenses,
motion sensor lights and energy
efficient LED fixtures.
A new storage unit was
purchased and installed for
maintenance materials as well
as sports equipment.
The primary playground on
the main campus was renovated
with the construction of a low
wall surrounding the play
structure to keep the sand in
the play area, a tricycle garage,
and a new lawn.
The school made progress with the Green School
Initiative by contracting with a “green” pest control
company featuring EcoSmart botanical products.
More “green” cleaning products and recycled
paper goods are being used by our cleaning
crew. LED lights were installed in many places
throughout the campus and the MIR teaching
staff continue to educate students to turn off
lights and water to avoid waste.
Thanks to the generosity of
MIR parent Glen Copeland, a
new sidewalk connecting the
MIR and high school campus
was completed.
Several trees were removed
and trimmed throughout
the campus to improve lawn
and tree health and increase
visibility.
As the landlord for the Grove High School, MIR
facilitated the building of a new commercial
kitchen for the new Farm to Fork lunch program.
MIR families will be able to take advantage of
this program beginning in the fall 2012. A shade
structure over the outdoor kitchen counter was
built by a Grove senior for his Eagle Scout project
to provide shelter to students standing in line to
pick up lunch.
Some technology highlights include software
upgrades to provide school administration and
teachers with improved student information,
registration, record keeping, and reporting.
A new computer server was purchased and
installed as well.
Due to a long-standing
commitment on the part of
the MIR Board of Trustees,
the school began and ended the year in
a strong financial position. The Board’s
responsibilities are primarily fiduciary,
watching out for and protecting the future
of MIR. To this end, the Board set major goals
for the year to include a focus on maintaining
and enhancing our assets, connecting our
resources, and planning for appropriate
growth. These are intertwined interests,
difficult to separate one from the other in
our discussions and actions.
All of our work this year was done in
alignment with the WASC Self-Study. The
Self-Study is now a document that describes
the interconnected nature of all of the work
going on in the school, including that of the
Board. This focus on describing our work
is a benefit to all of MIR, for it forced us to
be clear about the existing strengths of this
school as well as to recognize the areas we
need to strengthen.
We took advantage
of one of the recommendations from the
Self-Study right away
and par ticipate d
in Board Training.
From this, we have
been able to continue
to strengthen the
committee structure
that you have read about consistently in Annual
Reports from MIR over the years. Each of our
major committees continues to focus its work
on the goals mentioned above. For instance,
the Long Range Planning Committee, in
tandem with the Facilities & Technology
Committee, directed the remodel of the
commercial kitchen at the Grove School
site, which benefits MIR families with a
Farm to Fork school lunch program, fully
implemented Fall 2012. This particular
accomplishment is consistent with all three
goals and was implemented through our
committee structure.
Statement from the
Board of Trustees
MIR is part of a greater Montessori
community. Right here at home, that
community is MIR + Grove. Here in Redlands,
children and their families can be part of a
Montessori community from 18 months to
18 years of age (Toddler class through High
School graduation!) The Board is committed
to maintaining a healthy relationship with
the Grove School for the benefit of both. In
addition, MIR is part of a greater Montessori
community both national and international.
The Board also maintains professional
relationships with those who can benefit from
our experience in developing Elementary
classes and from our partnership with an
adolescent program.
The Board is grateful to all of the members
of the MIR community who participated
so willingly and energetically in developing
and producing the WASC Self-Study. These
workers include parents and staff, teachers
and students, community members and
board members. The Board is also deeply
appreciative, every day, for the creative and
diligent work carried out by the administrative
staff, teachers, and assistants in support of
MIR’s students and Montessori education.

Giving Report
The MIR Annual Fund continues to grow, reaching total
schoolwide participation of 97%. This is a tremendous
show of support for the school, one rarely matched by
even the most elite schools around the country. The MIR
community and friends of the school were generous
in their giving. Total funds raised came to $38,664.
We offer our sincere gratitude to all MIR Annual Fund
donors. Your generous support helped us to maintain our
beautiful learning environments, enhance our programs,
and provide staff training and development without
raising tuition.
We would especially like to acknowledge

MIR Annual Spring Gala and Auction
Party-goers had a marvelous time at Chicago,
MIR’s 15th annual Spring Gala & Auction.
After a sumptuous feast served by the Fox
Event Center, where the Gala was held,
auctioneer Sam Neely led the live auction.
And what an auction it was…participants
responded enthusiastically to the wonderful
treasures presented to them, helping MIR raise
$53,000, over $14,000 more than last year.
Total proceeds from the evening, including the
live auction, silent auction, and sponsorships,
came to $72,455. Funds will be used to support
the revamping of the school’s technology
infrastructure to provide improved services
and more academic opportunities for our
expanding programs and to meet the needs
of our increasing student body.
Special words of thanks go to the Gala
committee chairs, Jill McDermott and
Lisa Oliver, for their energy, hard work,
and creativity. Thank you to Green Acres
Advertising Design for creating the beautiful
artwork, advertising, and programs, and
countless thanks to all of the families, business
donors and underwriters, and volunteers who
generously donated time, goods, and services
to make this an unforgettable evening!

Parents and
Teachers of
Montessori in Redlands
The Parents and Teachers of Montessori (PTM) exist to
support MIR and the school’s mission to provide children
with the finest education experience possible. We believe
this effort should encompass parents, teachers, staff, and
members of the community.
PTM includes volunteer room representatives
from each classroom to help facilitate
communication between parents and staff, the
PTM Board of officers, and a teacher liaison.
The PTM Board and Room Representatives
meet regularly to organize events and create a
network of parent support. All parents, staff,
and friends are encouraged to attend.
PTM is dedicated to bringing the MIR
community together. In 2011-2012, PTM
sponsored Back to School Night, the Fall
Carnival, the Spring Carnival, the fall and
spring Camp Montessori’s, one Parent Work
Day, three Family Skate Nights, and the
Bluebird Running Club. Money for these
events is raised through the Innisbrook Gift
Wrap fall program, Art Cards spring program,
ticket sales at the spring carnival, food sales
at both the fall carnival and spring carnival,
and the BoxTops for Education program. All
PTM events were arranged and supported by
parent and staff volunteers.
Part of PTM’s mission is to provide volunteer
and financial support to the school. This year
PTM representatives used their creative
efforts to encourage parents to participate
in the Annual Fund resulting in increased
participation. PTM also donated an auction
item for the MIR Spring Gala & Auction that
raised $1,000 for MIR.
PTM supported and recognized MIR staff
by catering lunch for one in-service day,
acknowledging all staff birthdays, and
sponsoring Gala tickets for MIR teachers. In
support of our local community, PTM held
a fall food drive for Joseph’s Storehouse in
Redlands and a toy drive in April to support
Birthday Bags 4 Kids. We also supported
students, parents, and staff who participated
in the annual Run through Redlands.
The PTM Board thanks the Room
Representatives, parents, and staff who
support MIR through their volunteer work
and donations. We recognize the importance
of their efforts in following through with our
mission. In an effort to show our appreciation,
we hosted a PTM Room Representative
appreciation night by providing dinner at
Farm Artisan Foods.
