ABSTRACT
Rising number of immigrant workers to Malaysia is becoming one of new issues in Malaysia recently.
Where immigrants in Malaysia can be divided into two which is legal immigrant and illegal
immigrants. Legal immigrant are those who enter the country legally and those who are entering the
country without proper procedure considered as an illegal immigrant. Thus, the article focusing on
illegal immigrant issues in Malaysia and its implication to the human security issues. The needs of
cheap labours in Malaysia always become a catalyst for the increase of illegal immigrant entering the
country with another reason such as the economy. Migrant from countries such as Indonesia, the
Philippines, Vietnam, Bangladesh, Pakistan, India and many more views Malaysia as their new
opportunities. In addition, Malaysia needs to employ foreigners especially in semi-professional and
unprofessional sector.

ABSTRACT
The study examined Malaysian university students' perceptions of salient ethnic identity and national
identity markers. A survey was conducted on 200 students from different ethnic groups in two
Malaysian universities. The results revealed a similarity in views across ethnic groups. For the ethnic
identity, the salient symbols of ethnic group membership are language and culture, particularly lifestyle
and food. Parentage and physical appearance were also mentioned as ethnic markers. For the Malay
and Indian students, religion is a part of their ethnic identity. For the national identity, the university
students highlighted the national language, residence in Malaysia, Malaysian citizenship of parents as
well as national symbols (flag, anthem, Rukun Negara) as salient markers. Culture was also an element
but they were divided on whether Malaysians should know the culture of all races living in Malaysia or
the Malay culture. The importance of language in signifying group distinctiveness shows that it can
bind or divide. The findings suggest the national identity transcends the ethnic identities of groups that
make up the plural Malaysian society.

ABSTRACT
The central idea of strategies of stormwater management is about the environmental sustainability.
The environmental sustainability can be achieved by synthesizing the strategies with the hydrology
cycle. The reason is strategies of stormwater management are about the process to replicate the
hydrology cycle. The connection between the strategies and hydrology cycle are crucial to be analysed
and highlighted to help designer in understanding and making accurate planning and design of the
strategies to reduce the quantity and to improve the quality of stormwater. Thus, the aim of this study
is to analyse the strategies of sustainable stormwater management with the hydrology cycle. Two
objectives were formulated: (i) to identify the strategies of sustainable stormwater management, and
(ii) to analyse the connection of the identified strategies with hydrology cycle. In this qualitative
approach study, three methods were applied for data collection - online journal, forum discussion and
e-mail interview. The collected data was analysed based on five steps of descriptive comparative
analysis. Subsequently, 17 strategies have been identified and listed according to the priority
connection with 7 hydrology cycles - interception, infiltration, surface runoff, depression storage,
evapotranspiration, groundwater flow and interflow. The strategies were synthesized with hydrology
cycle as an analysis factor of environmental sustainability to list the strategies in priority order. The list
of the strategies are infiltration basin, barrier system, greenways, stream reclamation, vegetated
surface channel, rainwater harvesting, narrow street, rain garden, stormwater wetland, tree canopy
cover, green roof, disconnection of impervious area, porous pavement and soil modification.

ABSTRACT
This study analyses Malaysian corporate tax position in contributing to the country’s economic position
through Federal Government revenue. Discussions on the effective tax systems are centred on Adam
Smith’s Canons of Taxation and The Mirrlees Review’s characteristic of effective tax system. Corporate
taxation is found to be the highest contributor to Federal Government revenue compared to other
components of direct taxes, i.e. individual tax, petroleum tax and other direct taxes. With a maximum
contribution of 29.5 percent to the revenue across years, the composition of direct taxes to the total
revenue is made up by corporate tax at the largest, followed by individual tax, petroleum tax and
others. This is consistent and significant for the 14-year period (c2=39.9, p<0.01). This trend is expected
to continue for future years due to effective enforcement policy of the tax authority.

ABSTRACT
Job performance by village leaders is the key to promote sustainable life among rural communities.
The study was conducted to develop an interaction model of collective efficacy, organizational
commitment and job performance among village leaders in fisheries communities in Terengganu,
Malaysia. Data of 153 respondents were collected through mail and analyzed by structural equation
model (SEM). The finding shown that the collective efficacy was significantly contributed to job
performance (β=0.260, C.R=4.063, P=0.00). The finding also shown that the organizational
commitment had fully-mediated to the relationship between collective efficacy and job performance,
where the model with organizational commitment as mediator was fit better (χ2=711.065, χ2/
df=2.653) than the model without mediator (χ2=911.910, χ2/df=3.328). Finally, this study has
successfully developed a model how to increase job performance among coastal village leaders by
encourage collective efficacy and organizational commitment among them.

ABSTRACT
Hand gestures in Bharatanatyam dance carry valuable information. Learning the meaning of hand
gesture, mimic and practice them with the best way and high matching for the people who want to be
expert in this field is necessary. In this paper, a combined feature extraction method based on the
Discrete Wavelet Transform (DWT) and Discrete Cosine Transform (DCT) is proposed. DWT with two
level decompositions is applied to the image by size of 128 × 128. Two-dimensional DCT is then applied
to chosen part and convert the coefficients of DCT to vector. Finally, neuro fuzzy classifier is used to
classify the given images in some given classes. A suitable number of images with good illumination for
different applications have been created. Many types of image processing techniques like rotation,
scaling, and translation can also apply to the original database and make ready more options for any
study. The experimental results show that the proposed method has good performance in most of
single hand gestures. The dataset of single hand gesture in Bharatanatyam dance has been
successfully created and it could serve as a benchmark dataset as well. Our proposed system is able to
recognize single hand gesture with the accuracy of 93%. 56 out of 60 images of single hand gestures
are correctly classified by the proposed system. This is because the parameters identified were the
right signal, which gave the best 70 features to be classified and recognized.
Keywords: Discrete Wavelet Transform, Discrete Cosine Transform, neuro fuzzy classifier, scaling
coefficient, joint spatial, Adaptive neuro fuzzy inference system (ANFIS).

ABSTRACT
The status of non-Muslim minorities in a Muslim nation in present day societies is a contested issue in
our time. Discussing it within the framework of traditional notion of dhimmah, most of Muslim legists
advance the view that non-Muslim minorities cannot enjoy equal rights with Muslims. While another
school of thought arguing for equal rights, however, maintains that the dhimmi tradition in Islam
represents a modification of an earlier Arab concept of jiwar, namely the practice of providing
protection to foreigners. Thus, the concept of dhimmi is not something new but was adopted and
implemented in the early history of Islam which did not recognized the concepts of majority and
minority. This study attempts to show that the traditional concept of dhimmi still somewhat defines the
position of non-Muslim minorities in the thinking of the legal scholars. Nevertheless, on critical and
fundamental issues of rights, non-Muslims in Malaysia enjoy much greater rights which their
counterparts in Muslim majority countries never dreamt of during pre-modern times.
Keynotes: dhimmah, privileged, protection, Malaysia, non-Muslim

dibawah pimpinan Chiang Kai Shek dan Parti Komunis yang berada bawah pimpinan Mao Ze Dong. Semasa
Komunis China.

THE EXPLOITATION OF WOMEN WORKERS
UNVEILING CAPITALISM IN BANGLADESHI GARMENT INDUSTRIES
Ishrat Zakia Sultana

[email protected]
ABSTRACT
The recent series of man-made accidents in Bangladeshi garment industries are highly disturbing to our
collective conscience. These accidents point not only to the poor construction of the factory buildings
but also to the invisible tie between the insatiable need for cheap clothing on the part of western
consumers and the unlimited greed of the local industry owners. As a result, these industry workers are
housed in an unhealthy and insecure environment and paid inadequate salaries. Because most of the
workers are economically desperate women and the industries are operated by a male dominated
capitalist system that denies the rights of women, a systemic exploitation results. Therefore,
Bangladeshi female workers, who begin their job in a garment factory without even an appointment
letter, tolerate all sorts of violence and oppression in their work place years after years, and in the end,
as flimsy buildings collapse, either die or lose limbs and become permanently injured. A powerful
systematic collaboration of the industry owners (the local capitalists) – aided by the western large
brand companies (the international capitalists) – aims to produce goods at the lowest cost possible,
thus cutting corners to maximize profits. Yet, such expansion of capitalism, accompanied by
modernism, justifies their actions since garment industries have opened the door for many poor women
to improve their economic conditions. Drawing upon the recent tragic events of the deadliest garment
industry disasters in Bangladesh, this paper examines how the industry owners perceive, and practice,
‘human rights’? It also investigates whether neo-colonial modernity is merely exploiting women while
pretending to improve their economic conditions, and finally, to what extent female workers can
overturn the vicious circle of exploitation and thus establish their rights in Bangladeshi garment
industries.

ABSTRACT
Accident statistics increases annually and much has been done by the government to overcome this
problem. There are many factors that contribute to this problem amongst which encompasses the
driver, traffic and road conditions which is why drivers need to be informed repeatedly so that they are
alert with their surroundings while driving. This research is about a study on drivers’ behaviour towards
road signs, how they react and actions taken once they see warning given. Thanks to the latest
technology, drivers now can get the latest and updated traffic info with Variable Message Signs (VMS).
Compared to static and printed signs, VMS is more compatible as it is not only display signs but it also
can capture drivers’ attention with bright lights (LED or wig wag lamps) which can deliver more visual
impact and alert drivers.
Instead of using long text which takes four to six seconds for drivers to read, this study attempts to
discover a new method to deliver messages by using animated signs. A qualitative approach is adopted
in trying to improve the Malaysian VMS display by using an experimental methodology in developing a
recommended prototype (animated signs). The purpose of this study is to simplify all long text and
static signs into animated versions to make it simple, faster and easier to understand. As signs are one
of the important medium to convey any message to drivers, it is important to ensure that drivers are
able to understand and capture the messages display fast so that they can act accordingly in order to
avoid accidents.

ABSTRACT
The paper is about the investigation of how customer knowledge captured during use-phase and
retirement stage in the product development cycle. Customer knowledge is integrated with firmowned knowledge and converted into new ideas or solutions through knowledge conversion process.
As such, enhance the customer value proposition in terms of product and service function. In addition
to that, the research also examined the role of knowledge creation process during PSS design as a
mediator between the knowledge exploration-exploitation and customer value proposition.
Although, literatures related to these three elements (customer knowledge, knowledge creation and
product design) are discussed quite often. However, little discussion found in the context of integrated
product-service and none integrate the three elements in a single research. Our intended
contributions in this article are twofold. First, to empirically examine the effect of customer
knowledge captured from other product life cycle and firm-owned knowledge towards new knowledge
creation in Product-Service System design. Second, to empirically prove knowledge creation in PSS
design is crucial to enhancing customer value proposition in terms of product and service function.
The research focused on the organization as the unit of analysis. The Multimedia Super Corridor (MSC)
of IT and Multimedia cluster was chosen as the study group. One thousand questionnaires were sent
out, and there were 156 responses collected. The distribution of respondents is summarized according
to MSC cluster, size, and year of operation. The research utilized four main constructs, (a) knowledge
exploration (capturing knowledge from customers during use phase and retirement stage), (b)
knowledge exploitation (deployment of firm existing knowledge stored in knowledge-based, manuals
and documentation and expert knowledge), (c) KCP in PSS design (the SECI mode) and (d) customer
value proposition (product and service function). The relationships among those constructs were
structured in four main hypotheses. Partial least squares structural equation modeling was employed
to assess the model. Three out of four hypotheses were supported. The finding showed the prediction
of new knowledge creation in the product design by knowledge exploration and exploitation are
considered weak including the prediction of customer value proposition. However, considering the
knowledge was the only determinant element examined for customer value proposition, we argue
that the predictive value is adequate and meaningful.

ABSTRACT
In the construction industry of Malaysia, the problem of shortage of local skilled labour has remained
unsolved. Despite the various efforts done by the government and its key agencies like the
Construction Industry Development Board (CIDB), the construction industry is still relying on the
foreign labour to perform skilled work even though majority of them are unskilled. In other countries
including the UK, US and India, more women are looking for opportunity to become skilled labour.
Unlike Malaysia, jobs as construction skilled labour is not widely applied by women despite there is
ample of work opportunities. Based on the Malaysian labour force statistics, there are around 170,000
women who are unemployed and may become a potential source of labour to address the problem of
shortage of local skilled labour provided that they are properly trained. Findings from literature review
from this on-going thesis show that there is a potential for women in Malaysia to be attracted to
become skilled labour for the construction industry. Nevertheless, the specific constraints that militates
the entry of women to construction must be first identified and addressed.

ABSTRACT
There is a growing relationship between social capital and disaster. This article draws conceptual framework
and linkage between these two components. Social capital includes social networks and the norms of reciprocity
and trustworthiness which are highly important to speed up disaster preparedness and recovery. An individual’s
preparedness is reciprocally determined through the amount of available material and intellectual resources,
their social support networks, the community-level preparedness and the ability of the community to access
resources from those in power. Thus disaster preparedness and response activities create new types of social
capital. Recent studies show that social capital is related to a community’s ability to plan for and respond to
disasters. The positive relationships have found in case of high level of fairness and trustworthiness with the
disaster preparedness. So proper initiatives need to be taken by the government, NGOs and civil societies
towards formation and development of social capital and disaster preparedness as well. Linking social capital
with disaster preparedness could be useful to reduce disaster impacts and sustainable livelihood.

ABSTRACT
Few studies reported linkages between moral reasoning and transformational leadership style, but
questioned its moral foundation based on shared values and ethics (Ciulla, 2005; Kahn, 1990). Thus,
the issue of public leaders’ degree of moral judgment and transformational leadership behaviour as
perceived by subordinates is explored. The Defining Issues Test (DIT2) and the Multifactor leadership
questionnaire (MLQ X5) was completed by leaders and subordinates severely (Bass & Avolio, 2004;
Rest, 1999). Path analysis of the structural model indicates significant statistical relationship between
cognitive, moral development (CMD) and transformational leadership style (TFL) (B=0. 120, t=1. 286,
P<0.10). Nevertheless, we indicate that the capacity to experience, discover and anticipate ethical
threats encourages the use of post-conventional stage in decision making, and this result adds to our
understanding of the relationship between ethical reasoning and leadership style.

LIFE IN THE INDIAN CITY: A CASE STUDY ON FEMALE MIGRANT WORKERS IN
UPSCALE RETAIL SECTORS IN DELHI
Priyanka Dass Saharia
Department of Sociology
Delhi School of Economics
[email protected]
ABSTRACT
The city intensifies the complexity of ‘social’ with that of the ‘material’. The 'urban' experience is a sum
of various complexities, differences and strangeness yet how all these multiplicities get accommodated
in one unitary frame through this 'global city' dream. Through the twin ideas of ‘disjunctive inclusions’
and ‘exclusive connections’, the cosmopolis of Delhi opens up spaces to young female immigrants from
Manipuri and Nagaland in forms of upscale retail ventures; a part of a larger network of global trade.
These ‘manufactured’ spaces serve primarily two objectives; provides an opportunity for generation of
an income for these ‘marginalised’ community which is the bedrock for the ‘inclusion’ into the city life,
and on the other hand, by the ‘exclusive’ nature of their services, the highly ‘sexualised’, ‘orientalised’
roles they are made to play which packages their ‘ethnicity’ as an ‘exotica’. These spaces realise the
aspirations of these women for money yet the ‘urban’ experience fragments the idea of a ‘national
identity’ through discrimination on lines of ‘ethnicity’. The relations of production and cognitive framing
of people and things gives rise to a space where ‘ethnicity’ is intertwined in the articulations of its form,
peculiarities and contours. Through a rationalised view of the instrumentality of the ‘ethnic’ body and
its labour in the market via logic of ‘productive sacrifice’, these bodies are represented as ‘exotically
saleable’. It is a complex mix of co-dependency premised on a kind of ‘duality’ where ‘ethnicity’
becomes the constitutive dimension of the city’s modernity becoming a weapon of assertion and
resistance yet a divisive wall between its inhabitants. This division manifested itself in urban designs,
planning, zoning, appropriations of utility, distribution of wealth and power. This ethnographic work
studies the lived realities of these women through their ‘voice’ and the ways in which they negotiate
with their differences in urban spaces to integrate into the urban whole.

ABSTRACT
This study compared deaths aged five years or more in Bangkok city of Thailand in 2005 with Japan in
2006. Cause of death in Thai death registration data were adjusted for misclassification using logistic
regression from 2005 VA survey. Bangkok and Japan have different population age distribution. Age
standardization was used to make reliable comparison by applying gender age-specific death rates of
Japan to the Bangkok population. All-cause excess deaths were estimated as the ratio of the number
of deaths for Bangkok to the number of deaths for Japan. Area plots were used to display excess
deaths by cause and gender. The total death for Japan (18,739) was 79% of the total death in
Bangkok (23,812). In Bangkok, all-cause excess deaths were only 16% for males whereas 42% for
females were higher. Stroke, transport accidents for males, and endocrine for females were the main
cause-specific excess deaths in Bangkok. In Japan excess deaths were mainly by stomach cancer,
respiratory, and suicide. These excess deaths could be improved and prevented.

ABSTRACT
Malaria is a serious disease and major public health problem, which causes the death of children and
adults worldwide. Malaria is a risk for 97% of Nigerian population. There is an estimated 100 million
malaria cases with over 300,000 deaths per year in Nigeria. The diseases contributes to an estimated
11% of maternal mortality account for 60% of outpatient visits and 30% of hospitalizations among
children under five years of age in Nigeria despite targeted interventions to eliminate malaria in the
country. This paper seek to explore human behavior as a caused of malaria prevalence and cases in
Zamfara state North Nigeria using qualitative research method. The interview was conducted with 20
participants and found out that those malaria cases and prevalence was largely causes as a result of
poor household behavior on the measures taking to control the disease in one hand and their
behavior that increased the chances of producing mosquito which is the causal agent of transmitting
malaria among the population and hence increasing its prevalence. The paper recommended
comprehensive approach towards instituting effective health policies that included and integrated
human behavior into priority to be put in place especially regarding the fight against the scourge of
malaria.

ABSTRACT
The objective of this paper is to examine the role of Christian religious leader in implementing
interfaith dialogue towards conflict resolution from Christianity’s perspective, be it Internal Dialogue
(Intra Dialogue) or External Dialogue (Inter Dialogue). This paper is part of a series entitled “Role of
Religious Leader in Interfaith Dialogue towards Conflict Resolution: An Islamic Perspective”, where it is
a comparative study between Islam and Christianity. Research will include the perspective of the
Roman Catholic Church in the Second Vatican Council and other church group perspective such as
Orthodox, Protestant and Anglicans in The World Council of Churches (WCC). Basically, the Christian
religion is very concerned on the fundamental principles of relations between religious diversity which
includes two important aspects of justice and tolerance, respect for each other in the context of
different religious beliefs, as well as opening possibility for communication and dialogue. Among the
details highlighted by Christianity is; (1) the importance of open communication and dialogue with non
-Christian religions including intra dialogue involving Christians themselves.,(2) encouragement to
respect others (3) to promote friendship (4) to promote a sense of togetherness and (5) rejection of
prejudices and (6) rejection of hostility (antagonism) to fellow humans. All these is the basic
information needed to be conveyed by the Christian Religious Leader to their followers through Intra
dialogue in order to enhance mutuality, understand the importance of developing communication and
social relationships between those of different faiths. While for the Christian religious leaders, they
viewed that dialogue involving religious leaders, whether formal or informal, will serve as platform to
address issues of justice, peace, humanity, and social ethics among others. In addition, dialogue
directed towards conflict resolution is also part of their agenda to build good relations with nonChristians, especially the Muslims.

ABSTRACT
The Cheros are one of the 30 tribes found in undivided Bihar State of India. At present the Cheros may
be found mostly in Palamau, Garhwa and Latehar Districts of Jharkhand State of India. Many live
close to the forests in this region from which tribal people often obtain a majority of their food.
Poverty has always been a major problem in the Palamau area, perhaps because of which nutritional
problems plague many of the poor people. We report in this study preliminary results of the research
on this area that commenced through a project that was granted by the Ministry of Tribal Affairs. It
was felt that this area had many reported cases of death by malnutrition or hunger. Yet, the tribal
people of the area were reputed to have survived hunger by using their knowledge of the forest. An
attempt was made by the authors to collect data to check up on malnutrition in the area and the
cultural health practices of the community. One of the added problems of the indigenous people of
this area had been the bethbegari or kamia, a kind of bonded labour, which is still prevalent today.
The present ethnographic and physical anthropological study will show how the cultural information
of the Cheros are being used in order to combat their nutritional and health deficiencies and how
many of their health practices are integrated with their cultural organization.

ABSTRACT
In recent times, women empowerment is a key challenge for communities in the world. In a number
of countries, women are struggling to improve their living standards. For this challenge, various
efforts have been made by public/private/non-governmental sectors. Recently, Self-help groups
(SHGs) have reportedly been contributing significantly to women empowerment in several countries
including Pakistan. SHGs allow poor women to improve their lives through savings and running smallscale businesses. Previous studies show that SHG is a backbone to implement rural finance services
and to provide work opportunities. The present study is a case study of quantitative impact analysis
of SHGs, which is conducted in Gujranwala district, province of Punjab, Pakistan, in order to study in a
more rigorous way than previous studies how they can enhance women empowerment and lead to
poverty alleviation in Pakistan. Data has been collected through questionnaires and the targets are
women living in the district and joining SHGs. Descriptive statistics demonstrate the significance of
the SHGs while analysis shows that they have been contributing to improvement of women’s economic, social and psychological conditions in the district.

ABSTRACT
This study aimed at exploring the lived experiences and challenges of Filipino househusbands who are
engaged in role reversals with their absentee wives. It examined the underlying factors of marital role
reversal and wives’ need to work abroad as well as the challenges and its impact on their self-concept.
Househusbands’ coping mechanisms, learning and realizations in experiencing role reversals were also
presented. Using phenomenological and case study methods, significant findings of this study were
drawn from in-depth interviews with seven househusbands and their family members. Given the
interplay of various factors, wives’ better career opportunities and family’s financial considerations
emerged as the primary factors for the couples’ decision to switch roles. These factors also influenced
their wives’ decision to work abroad instead of being employed in their homeland. The pressure of child
caring and household tasks, maintenance of smooth marital relationship and struggle for social
acceptance with the new family set-up were the major challenges identified in this study. Subsequently,
househusbands’ relationships with their wives, children, relatives and friends in the assumption of the
breadwinner role revealed both positive and negative changes. While their relationship with other
people remained unchanged, the impact of role reversals to househusbands’ self-concept revealed
positive views even when they are performing more feminine tasks. Negative feelings of
embarrassment and self-pity are also evident at times. With the challenges of role reversals,
househusbands generally cope by fulfilling their newly assigned task as primary caregiver and steadfast
partner. Social, emotional and financial support coming from their family members, relatives and
friends also contributed to their healthy coping. Househusbands engagement in role reversals
enhanced their marriage, developed their personal values and work-related skills. Implications to the
counseling profession and research were also discussed.

ABSTRACT
This study aimed to identify the level of generic skills among trainee teachers at one of the Teacher
Education Institutes in Malaysia. A total of 104 trainee teachers of final semester Program Ijazah
Sarjana Muda Perguruan (PISMP) participated in this study. Data were collected using a questionnaire
which was adapted from generic skills questionnaire developed by the SCANS (2001), Mohd Sattar
(2009), Kamaruddin (2010), Soft Skills (KPTM 2006) and Malaysian Quality Framework (MQA), 2005).
Among the variables studied were the skills of communication, critical thinking and problem solving,
teamwork, continuous learning and information management, leadership, moral and ethics,
entrepreneurship and self-confidence. Results of the study show the level of generic skills of these
trainee teachers is very good. The results indicate there is a positive relationship between the generic
skills and achievement. Apart from that, the results also show there is a difference between generic
skills and gender but no significant difference with race factors. The importance of teamwork, being
given responsibility and collaborative learning emerged as the most important factors for effective
learning in the three contexts under consideration. Finally, this paper ends with suggestions and
recommendations with respect to further initiatives to enhance the employability of the graduates.

ABSTRACT
Even though cardiovascular disease (CVD) are not prominent among young adults, they may not be
free from its related risk factors. The purpose of this study was to examine if the developed four-factor
structure of the Health Beliefs Related to CVD (HBCVD) scale was a proper model fit of the data for the
undergraduate students. A cross-sectional study was conducted on 788 undergraduate students in
Universiti Sains Malaysia, Malaysia selected by proportionate cluster sampling technique. The 25-item
English version of HBCVD scale was used to measure the participant’s health beliefs status which
consisted of four constructs of the Health Beliefs Model: perceived susceptibility and severity of CVD;
benefits and barriers to diet and exercise. Confirmatory factor anlaysis was used to establish the
construct validity. The study supported a 19 items and four-factor model with acceptable model fit
indices *RMSEA = 0.040 (90CI%: 0.034, 0.046; Clfit = 0.998); SRMR = 0.053; TLI = 0.941; CFI = 0.950+.
The Composite Reliability and the Average Variance Extracted for the final measurement model were
ranged from 0.611 to 0.882 and 0.254 to 0.592 respectively. The four-factor model with 19-item with
one error covariance of the HBCVD scale has a good fit and shown a good psychometric values. A
slightly modified HBCVD scale may be a useful tool to assess health beliefs status among university
students in Malaysia, as it will provide a broader picture of health beliefs toward CVD that may impact
on their health behaviour. Once health educators understand this, they might then be able to
determine how to best support and promote cardiovascular health among university students for early
preventive behaviours.

CRISIS COMMUNICATION A COMPARATIVE ANALYSIS OF BRAND RECOVERY
STRATEGY BETWEEN MALAYSIA AIRLINES AND AIR ASIA AFTER
THE CRASH OF MH370 AND QZ8501

Senior Lecturer of Communications,

ABSTRACT
The Crash of MH370 and QZ8501 in 2014 and early 2015 experienced by the two airlines based in
Malaysia: Malaysia Airlines and Air Asia raised public attention including academics and professional in
communication policy sector. Both companies have a relatively different strategy to manage public
communication and restore their brand reputation as international airlines service companies.
This paper outlines both brand recovery strategy of communication in theoretical approach and its
implementation by the Malaysia Airlines and Air Asia based on the study of mass media coverage in
Indonesia. This paper refers to 5 strategies of brand image restoration developed by William Benoit in
the book: Accounts, Excuses, and Apologies: A Theory of Image Restoration Strategies. (1995): Denial,
Evading responsibility, Reducing offensiveness, corrective actions and Mortification.
Referring to the concept of brand image restoration developed by Benoit, I discovered the fact
that Air Asia’s ability to manage the issues of post-crash is better than Malaysia Airlines. Air Asia
management not only use bad-weather as an external wrong factor, but acknowledges pilot error and
declared fully responsible for the compensation of passengers. Direct responding to the disaster from
top level of management caused the victim's family tranquility.
In other side, the direct involvement of Malaysian government in managing global
communication following the crash of MH370 can relatively maintain trust image of Malaysian Airlines
as a state-owned airline. Willingness to cooperate with related parties, including the press community
from both companies in aircraft search process also shows that the two airlines have adopted openness
principles of corporate management.
However, the recovery of both company's brand reputation cannot be done automatically,
because of external factors such as recent regulation of Indonesian government that later generated
controversy related to Air Asia flight operation banning for a while. In the case of Malaysia Airlines,
unsuccessful of victims search led to the continuity of brand crisis due to mistrust to professionalism of
MH management among public.

ABSTRACT
IDAF-4C+ Anxiety and Fear Module is the latest questionnaire developed to measure dental anxiety
and fear. Originally in English, this 8-item questionnaire is equipped with strong theoretical
underpinnings which assess the emotional, behavioural, cognitive and psychological components of
fear reaction. However, due cultural, language and age difference between validated Australian
population and intended Negeri Sembilan population, the validity and reliability of this questionnaire
needs to be established before it can be used in a local setting. The purpose of this study was to
validate the Malay version of the IDAF-4C questionnaire among secondary school children in Negeri
Sembilan before it can be used among local population. Methods: A cross-sectional study was
conducted on 246 secondary school children aged 16 years old in Rembau, Negeri Sembilan by
proportionate cluster random sampling technique with class used as a cluster. The questionnaire was
translated into Malay language by a team consists of translator, medical, dental and language expert
and pre-tested before being finalized. Questionnaire consists of eight items in the form of Likert scale
of 1 to 5. Participation in this research required parents’ implied consent as well as participants’
assent. Data were analyzed using SPSS version 22.0. Validity was determined by exploratory factor
analysis (EFA) while reliability was determined by Cronbach’s alpha. Results: 184 answered
questionnaires were returned with the response rate calculated as 74.8% where most of the students
were from rural area (75%), female (62.5%), and Malay (91.8%). This study yielded a single-factor
structure that demonstrated high factor loading on all eight items ranging from 0.732 to 0.853 and
good internal consistency (Cronbach’s alpha=0.929). Conclusions: The Malay translated version of
IDAF-4C+ questionnaire anxiety and fear module is valid and reliable to measure dental anxiety and
fear among secondary school children in Negeri Sembilan with all eight items were remained.

ABSTRACT
"In Asia, medical tourism has become increasingly important due to the growing demand for the
health services. In this context, communication according to cultural requirements is absolutely
essential. Culturally competent communication is paramount in humane healthcare domain. The
current studies on culturally competent communication in medical tourism have focused mostly on
western countries and not so much on Asian countries. However, there is information available that
shows that Asian countries are becoming preferred destination for medical tourists due to its
affordable cost. An increasing number of multicultural patients are travelling to Asian countries under
medical tourism. This article emphasizes the interest to understand and to justify culturally competent
communication perspectives from Malaysian context. Thus, this paper has two objectives: (i) identify
the culturally competent communication attributes in an Asian perspective; (ii) determine how
culturally competent communication contributes to medical tourism. This will also contribute towards
sensitizing the importance of cross cultural context in healthcare communication. Moreover, this
paper will also be beneficial to the authorities to enforce the importance of culturally competent
communication in medical tourism as part of quality of care improvement agenda. Subsequently, the
result will provide insights and information on communication and health from an Asian perspective.

ABSTRACT
This review paper aims to discuss student misconduct with regards to peer influence and its various
types. Adolescence is a period of transition that comes with many challenges for students. Therefore,
the researcher focuses on the period of adolescence, since it could lead to more serious disciplinary
problems. The failure to provide proper attention and solutions could lead this to a more serious issue
in the future. Data collection and analysis conducted through a study of the existing literature help
and support the results of this study. At the end of the writing, the researchers hope that there will be
more comprehensive proposals and studies that thoroughly address such issues in the future. This
includes conducting multiple research works that provide more in-depth implications, carrying out
case studies, varying the existing approaches to address misconduct cases, strengthening the existing
techniques and varying the practices of overcoming misconduct issues in the country.

ABSTRACT
This study aims to analyze previous studies in the existing body of literature on the comparison of
student disciplinary misconduct before and after the millennium era. In terms of results from data
collection methods, the researcher has used resources from previous studies to help and support the
findings of the study. Moreover, since the investigation of student misconduct will always be in debate,
it is crucial to look at a collection of results from previous studies during that period in order to
comprehend the chronology of events in the study of disciplinary misconduct. The students themselves
possess emotions and thoughts in behaving. Thus, they have a variety of internal and external issues
that cause them to engage in disciplinary misconduct. It is with great hope that, with the discussion of
this study, there will be more work in the future that could come up with more effective
recommendations to address misconduct issues among students.

THE FILIPINOS IN THEIR HYBRID LOGICAL CONVERSATIONS:
A PRELIMINARY STUDY OF A MICROCOSM OF THE SOUTHEAST ASIAN
COMMUNICATION PATTERN
Bernard Moreno Bragas
Institute of Arts and Sciences
Far Eastern University
[email protected]
ABSTRACT
In this paper, I would like to show that the Filipinos in their local conversations always commit the
logical fallacy of ambiguity. There are always apparent manifestations of this that will be initially
illustrated as necessary entailments of the paper’s presentation of Filipino ambiguity. Nonetheless,
these communication pattern by the Filipinos need to be justified in consideration of many
aspects. Thus, there is also a need to answer the question if it is really fallacious to be ambiguous
(even under certain considerations).
Ambiguity as a construct shall also be discussed at such length together with situating it at a given
context. This context is just as what anthropologists and cross-cultural researchers call the high
context (HC) types of people in contrast to the low context (LC) types, which is definitely in
contradistinction to how the Filipinos conduct their communicative technics.
The
word communicare in Latin means, “to share or impart that which is common.” Thus, communication
cannot be limited to a simplistic logical analysis that is sometimes akin to the predictability of
mathematics. It is somehow very assuming to think that in the behavioral pattern of the Filipinos, they
would be confined to a kind of a stiff logical conversations. Furthermore, critiques of language by
some philosophers shall also be extrapolated because it exposes the limitations of logic that is actually
systematized from the Western tradition – a low context society, if I may say. I would look at the
notions of important philosophers such as Ludwig Wittgenstein and H.P. Grice, but only as it relates to
the proposed topic. May the noticeable shift from the “realm of logic” and dogmatic analysis to a nondogmatic use of ordinary language, family resemblances and language games surface out in this
paper. Because in the coalescence of the Filipino language, ambiguity could be “a form of life” in the
Wittgensteinian sense of the phrase.
With this thought flow, this paper ends not really with the endorsement of the Filipinos continuous
pursuit to be ambiguous. But with the recommendation to appreciate the logic behind the Filipinos'
language, which is actually more of having a meaning shared by all involved in a certain community
(that is possibly exclusive) than having explicit meanings of words immediately understandable
universally. And with this analysis, I conjecture that the hybrid logical conversations of the Filipinos
could be seen as a microcosm of the South East Asian communication pattern - that I shall also subject
to further research.

ABSTRACT
Contingency theory proposes that advanced manufacturing technology adoption and market
competition necessitate the adoption of sophisticated MAS for more accurate and timely accounting
information to enhance firms’ decision making and to sustain their long-term success. This study
empirically examines the effect of advanced manufacturing technology adoption and market
competition on the adoption of sophisticated management accounting system (MAS).Using a
structured questionnaire, data from 137 manufacturing companies from Malaysia were obtained for
analyses. The regression results show that the sophistication of MAS adopted is significantly and
positively related with advanced manufacturing technology adoption and market competition. The
findings suggests that the adoption of sophisticated MAS design is parallel with the technological
innovations that are incorporated into their manufacturing technologies and the adoption of
sophisticated MAS design is able to assist managers in cost and control activities and to provide more
relevant information for strategic decision making purposes. Besides, the adoption of sophisticated
MAS design is also able to assist firms to cope with the increasing customer demands and competition
from their core competitors by providing more relevant information regarding the changes in the
business environment. These results have contributed to the management accounting change
literature by suggesting that attempts by the MAS designers to improve the timeliness and the scope
of the information are of particular relevance to the managers as the firm adopts more advanced
manufacturing technology and as the market competition increases.

Media Path Hedonic Young Users, while 76.1% was determined by other factors that not examined in
this study.
Based on the results of this study, we can expect social media teen users to be more concern
with how to interact and be more selective in the use of the features of social media, in order to avoid
the influence of hedonistic lifestyle. Future studies are expected to examine the different social media
objects and examine the positive impact that may arise from the use of social media.

ABSTRACT
In understanding stock price behavior, this study attempts to use technical analysis to anticipate future
price movements to enable investors decide on when to enter and exit a stock position to maximize
returns or to minimize losses. Technical analysis makes use of candlestick and chart patterns, as well as
a variety of technical indicators to decide on the consensus of whether a particular stock, or the stock
market index for that matter, is driving towards bullish or bearish zone. A sample of 20 companies for a
time period of 3 years from the technology sector is chosen where technical analysis is carried out to
study stock price behavior of companies. Daily and 30-minute timeframe charts are used to detect any
indication of bullish or bearish signals, which will be confirmed with actual market price return or losses
to prove on the validity of the technical tools used to project stock price movements. The results show
that technical analysis generally helps in the prediction of future price movement despite the various
false signals that can exist. Using technical analysis does not guarantee stock return, but instead helps
investors to maximize returns or minimize losses by knowing when to enter or exit a stock position.

A THREE DIMENSIONAL MODEL FOR SELECTING THE MOST APPROPRIATE JOURNAL
OUTLET FOR MANUSCRIPT SUBMISSION

ABSTRACT
The rapid increase of the number of journals since last decade opened a wide opportunity for authors
to publish their works in prestigious journals. However, this exponential growth of journal options also
causes confusion among the authors in selecting the most appropriate publication outlet for
submitting their research. Therefore, the authors have to devote an extra effort to evaluate the
related journals one by one. Sometimes these evaluations may not give expected results owing to
numerous reasons. Although a considerable number of studies describe the crucial factors that need
to select a journal, there are only a limited number of models or methods have been developed to
make a journal selection. This study investigated 17 previously published relevant literature to identify
the most crucial factors for the journal selection process. Out of all the 40 factors which have been
discussed previously, 10 features were considered as important in more than 50% of the previous
studies. Finally, all these 40 factors are grouped into three separate major categories and developed a
new 3-dimensional model for selecting the most appropriate journal outlet to submit a manuscript.
The dimensions were recognized in a way that they affect to increase or decrease the fitting between
the journal and manuscript.

ABSTRACT
The definition of old age’ is very much problematic since it varies across and within a particular culture
and society. It has no absolute definition or meaning. It is difficult to define old age on the basis of
chronological and physiological degeneration of a certain person. Different socio-cultural and
economic factors should be considered to level someone as old. On the other hand, a woman does not
become old at the same time with a man. It is the society where she lives and the culture which she
belongs to specify certain parameters for her to be levelled as old. A woman may become older in a
number of ways that are different for a man. This paper examines the ways in which we can enrich
understanding the definitional complexities surrounding the question who is old and when a woman is
old?

This study examines the institutional influence as a determinant of foreign direct investment (FDI)
focusing on Nigeria, applying autoregressive distributed lag (ARDL) cointegration technique. The
conclusion signifies that institutional qualities utilize long-run sway in determining FDI inflows. This
study opined that institutional quality is an essential factor in determining FDI in Nigeria. Also, the
combined impact of institutional quality and trade openness is momentous and also contribute
positively in attracting FDI both in the short and long run. Addition to this, this study is found to affirm
the hypothesis that said that the simultaneous implementation of policy mix; that is, minimizing trade
barriers and improving institutional quality plays a noteworthy role in enticing FDI in a developing
country like Nigeria.

ABSTRACT
Sunday TV Mass (STVM) is one of the Catholic Church’s initiatives for evangelization via media.
Primarily produced to spread the Good News, it is specifically for the sick and physically incapable
since they cannot go to churches to attend Mass and fulfill their Sunday obligation.
However, since the broadcast Mass is communicated through a mass medium and is exposed to a
wider audience than necessarily targeted, some people, the adolescents (youth) in particular, make
STVM an excuse to forego Mass attendance in their respective churches.
This experimental study will focus on STVM on its role as evangelizer and catalyst to ritual formation.
James Carey’s theory of Ritual Communication describes this practice as an enabler to the creation of a
community of believers among the youth and George Gerbner’s Cultivation Theory depicts on how
television ‘creates’ a worldview that unravels ritualistic experience by watching STVM.
The respondents of the study are 40 high school students of Angelicum College. Selected purposively,
the students were instructed and monitored to watch STVM for four Sundays. These students are top
achievers in their Religion subjects and are exposed to different religious activities in their school.

ABSTRACT
A plethora of studies reported linkages between ethical reasoning and transformational leadership
style, such as moral and ethical leadership, stage of justice reasoning among others. However, few
studies investigated the specificities of individual motivational values and belief on the relationship
between moral reasoning and transformational leadership style. Few studies on the issue gave
conflicting and mixed findings, hence this study contends that transformational leadership
characteristic behaviours facilitates the capacity to know, learn and anticipate ethical threats that
influences the use of post-conventional stage in decision making. We argue that transformational
leader’s exhibit features that enhance development opportunities in subordinates. We equally suggest
that understanding public leaders’ degree of moral judgment and behaviour may contribute to
leadership training and development as leader’s core beliefs might affect cognitive processes and
behaviour.

ABSTRACT
We have conducted a study to describe and analyze the understanding of Kumelembuai community on
the meaning of social values of social culture in conservation of natural resources. Conservation of
natural resources by the Kumelembuai community is a manifestation of the growing awareness that
the forest or agricultural land is the only source of livelihood for them. The community is very selective
in the use of natural resources. It can be seen from the society that they do not utilize forest resources
massively. In addition, it can also be seen from the habits of the people in planting crops in
intercropping systems. There is a belief in the community that the forest is inhabited by the spirits of
ancestors which make the people carefully utilize the forest resources.

ABSTRACT
Ideology is often viewed as a mode or vehicle to promote or legitimate interests of a particular
social group. It operates efficiently in a way that it appears to be obscure and least visible to the
interpreters, especially where constraints are posed to the non-dominant power-holders (Fairclough,
1989). To portray or strike a ‘balance of forces’ (to follow Fairclough’s term) among the counterparts
or authority figures involved, various linguistic and sema-pragmatic elements are exercised in order to
manifest reassertion of power control or an attempt to gain dominance over the other. This
phenomenon appears to be crucial in translating a parallel text, where two languages are exercised
forcefully and in tandem to appear as a sole text, so as to create solidarity rather than dominance.
Where Nida’s Formal Equivalence (F-E) is very common for a technical text such as a legal/
political text, it is also fundamental to note that there is a limitation to where this notion can be
entirely applicable. This is in fact true where there is a complex interaction of linguistic, cultural and
ideological elements involved in a particular discourse, specifically political ones. Hence, the aim of this
paper is to observe by how far does the notion of equivalence, specifically F-E apply to this particular
legal text. Throughout the discussion of this paper, both intertextual (use of modality) and extratextual
factors (socio-cultural context of Brunei and the British Government) will be utilized to reflect the
problem of equivalence and the choice of the related function words in the target text (TT). In other
words, are they merely caused by the renowned problem of finding equivalence in translation, or
‘manipulated’ in the name of power and ideology.

ABSTRACT
Many research works has been carried out on capabilities and performance of manufacturing
organisations. But little attention has been given to certain factors that are peculiar to developing
countries in sub-Sahara African region and are capable of influencing the relationships such as
electricity. This paper is part of an on-going research and it is aimed at filling this gap by determining
the moderating role of electricity as a service input on the relationship between organisational
capabilities and performance of large manufacturing companies in Nigeria. Data will be collected
using seven point likert scale questionnaires administered on selected respondents and multiple
regressions will be used for the analysis to determine the relationship.

ABSTRACT
Nations are becoming very conscious of their positions and international perception as they affect their
images in the world. They are generating new approaches and strategies to establish and propagate
positive national brand images. According to Dinnie *2008+, a comprehensive nation branding strategy
would encompass initiatives and program to stimulate Diaspora mobilization, enhance the
coordination of the nation’s key institutions and organizations and ensure a reasonable consistency in
the country’s official communication and behaviors. It is felt that there is pressing need for the study of
the process underpinning the support for Nation Branding. In this context an attempt is made to find
out how far the films in India and Nigeria contribute to their branding of their nations. Awarded films
during the period 2000 to 2011 were selected for the research. Survey and Content Analysis were
carried out Perception Scale on Nation Branding was constructed. It covers the attributes in the Nation
Brand Hexagon by Anholt *2002+ viz., people, culture, heritage, indigenous values, national properties
and economic activities. Both content and concurrent validity were established. The researcher has
inferred that weighted average for ‘tourist centers’ is greater than the other dimensions of the Brand
Index viz., ‘history’ in films .As far as values are concerned , the family values got the highest score both
in Indian and Nigerian films. Portrayal of the environmental assets like oceans, rivers, landscape,
industries and institutions is worth to brand a nation. Both the films need to portray more of their
industries and institution, through their ‘Made in ....”. The better portrayal of all the dimensions shall
definitely attract tourists to the country. It will also enhance the patriotic feeling and love for the
nation among the audience. Pedagogy for branding a nation for the stake holders is the need of the
hour because it is the informal education and values which can be inculcated in the minds of the
viewers. It also highlights that the need of the hour is to educate and edify the community for better
understanding of the nation through formal, non-formal and informal education that too, starting from
students to the public by all means. These are all discussed in the full paper.

Mohamed selaku mantan Perdana Menteri Malaysia.

ABSTRACT
Chinese Opera is the performing arts originated thousands of years. As seen from the evidence appeared in the
era of Song Dynasty 1179-1276 BC, there was a street opera troupes performing in the southern provinces of
China. Chinese opera characterized by the music and the story based on a verse structure alternated with
melodies and idiomatic vocals.
The Teochew opera in Thailand prospered in the reign of King Chulalongkorn. There were many theaters set up
by Chinese and Thai people. Additionally, the opera schools were opened as a cultural exchange of Thailand and
China. Opera has opened up widely, especially in Chinatown and on Charoen Krung Road. Teochew (Chaozhou)
is the majority population of Chinese residents in Thailand. Bangkok, for a period of time, used to be the center
of the development of Teochew opera. In the communist era under the command of major general
Phiboonsongkram, he wanted to control the Chinese people in Thailand by announcing the replacement of the
clan name with the surname for national security. Major general Phiboonsongkram also closed down more than
300 schools. After the end of World War II, the communist Chinese Red Army was at war with the Chinese
government. The democratic president Jia Kai Czech forced immigrants of Teochew Chinese opera performers
including opera owners into Thailand in 1952-1962. During this time, the opera had 80 troupes reflecting the
prosperity of The Teochew opera. Until 1966, opera theaters in Chinatown had dissolved. Presently, there are 12
troupes of Teochew opera performing in the shrines.
This study aims to revive the precious value of the opera. The audiences are mostly middle-age to old people.
Under such circumstances, the opera has to be modified to the dynamic of the society. The Teochew Opera is
tied to belief, faith, religious, and shrines. Therefore, Teochew opera is considered the high-class art. However,
the role of Teochew opera is reduced to become just a celebration of the shrines. The celebrations also require
cooperation and support of the Chinese community to organize the opera. The cooperation and support from
various sections of the business community and public devotion to the sacred shrines. Therefore, the
cooperation and support of the Chinese community and the local business community are very important to the
performing of the opera. Teochew opera is not only a show for entertainment purposes but also linked to the
faith, roots of the Chinese people and a network of community relationships (Guanxi) in the context of the
economic, social and cultural relations. Teochew opera is part of the fundamental identity of the Chinese people
and is bound by the network of relationships of Chinese communities.

ABSTRACT
The use of the Internet to retrieve health information is increasingly common and becoming the centre
from which an individual acquires knowledge to make informed decisions regarding his health.
MyHEALTH Portal (MHP) is a web-based health information service (WBHIS) set up by the Ministry of
Health Malaysia as one of the MSC Telehealth Flagship Application in 2005. It is a national initiative by
the Malaysian Government to bring great advances to the country through the innovative use of
Information and Communication Technology (ICT) aims to empower and encourage individuals to be
responsible for their health by providing health information and education online. This study is
intended to investigate the MHP’s usage and other related factors specifically the psychological
factors that influnce its usability using a quantitative research approach. It helps to understand factors
that might hinder users from using MHP and inhibit them from making informed decision regarding
their health condition. The findings would significantly help relevant parties to analyze the changes
that are necessary in order to promote MHP to the mass. A conceptual framework is also developed
indicating the key determinants of individual intention to use MHP through the central tenets of
Rogers’s Diffusion of Innovations (DoIs) to identify the key critical success factors that influence
individuals’ attitude based on the Theory of Reasoned Action (TRA) moderated by a psychological
factors using the Health Belief Model (HBM).

STEAMERS, TRADE AND CHANGE IN OMAN'S ECONOMY
IN THE SECOND HALF OF NINETEENTH CENTURY

ABSTRACT
The paper discusses the impact of introducing steam navigation in southern seas, mainly the Indian
ocean and Arabian waters, on old processes of trade patterns in Oman.
The steamboat, with its power to travel speedily across the Indian Ocean, carried goods as well as
travellers far into the coasts of Africa and Asia. Few inventions in the nineteenth century were as
important in the history of Imperialist expansion and domination.
By the 1880's, it became obvious that all obstacles that faced maritime navigation and hindered both
trade and colonial expansion of European powers, was tamed gradually by three revolutionary events:
The introduction of steamers, the opening of the Suez Canal, and the use of telegraphic
communications. These events led to the total domination of Indian Ocean trade by Britain and France,
and the decline of Omani trade economy based on the fleet of dhows that made the country's main
force.
The introduction of steamers into the Gulf actually developed Gulf trade, linking it to networks beyond
that of the Indian Ocean in which it was integrated by the mid-19th century. The paper objective is to
question how did the steamers service affect Oman's local or even regional trade, especially that
carried by dhows.

ABSTRACT
This paper discusses the application of physical exercise on furniture design. Physical exercise is
important for people to maintain the health and prevent from the chronic disease. Physical exercises
can be categories into aerobic exercise, anaerobic exercise, and flexibility exercise. Each of categories
of physical exercises has a benefit itself. Recently, people in urban dwelling spent more time sitting on
furniture that causes unhealthy behaviour prior to sedentary lifestyle. Sedentary behaviour is best
defined as a distinct class of behaviour that involves sitting and low levels of energy expenditure,
typically less than 1.5 metabolic equivalents (METs). The application of physical exercise on furniture is
one of the solutions to decrease the sedentary lifestyle. In design process, design development is more
integrated with several aspects of design as aesthetics, functionality and technicality. The aesthetics
aspects applied into furniture design were more to emphasize the design appearance and emotion.
Functionality aspects on exercise furniture are focus on usability in design. The applications of physical
exercises in furniture design can divided into aerobic exercise, anaerobic exercise, and flexibility
exercise. Technicality aspect on exercise furniture is more on the application of technology and
material. It is plays the role to make design more functional. The application of technology and
material into exercise furniture can influence the design appearance and function. Finally, the
aesthetic improvements and enhanced functionality of the design can give the better impact in the
application of physical exercise on the furniture design. The integrated function of furniture such as
sitting, reclining and lying with physical exercise can encourage and give the awareness for people to
make the body movement and reduce the sedentary lifestyle. Exercise furniture can be use as daily
activities for support various people activities such as sitting, rest, and relaxing and the same time
promote and encourage people for healthy behavior in their lifestyle.

ABSTRACT
Improvisation is currently considered to be novel in the business activity. Due to limited study on
improvisation in Malaysian businesses, this paper aims to investigate the influence of environmental
factors towards the organizational improvisation. Specifically, organizational resources which include
tangible and intangible resources as well as the external environmental factors in which comprise of
market and technological turbulence and competitive intensity are the factors determined to influence
organizational improvisation. By examining 106 small medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in northern
region Malaysia, we found that internal and external environmental factors were able to influence the
organizational improvisation. This finding outlines that the SME entrepreneurs should highlight the
substantial effect of external and internal factors which are able to influence the spontaneity and
creativity in decision making and execution process in sustaining the firm performance. Theoretically
and in practice, this study on improvisation in the business represents potentially rich addition to the
vocabulary of entrepreneurial decisions and actions.

KLANG VALLEY

ABSTRACT
Several previous studies showed that the level of zakat compliance varies by different age groups.
When age and the income increased, the awareness to pay zakat is also increased. However, the
compliance behaviour among youth to pay zakat is low, and there is no assurance that the zakat
compliance level will increase as the age increases. If the level of compliance does not improve, then
the potential to improve the zakat collection in the future is small. Therefore, it is very crucial to study
the level of compliance behaviour on zakat among youth and to identify factors influencing their
obligation towards zakat payment. This study was conducted to identify factors influencing zakat
compliance behaviour among youth in Klang Valley. Data from 437 respondents were analysed using
Exploratory Factor Analysis (EFA) and Confirmatory Factor Analysis (CFA). The results showed that the
youth understanding on zakat and facilities factors influenced the zakat compliance behaviour on
salary income significantly. An important implication of the study is that zakat understanding among
youth should be given high priority to further improve the level of zakat obligatory. Gazetting the law
of zakat would be implemented in addition to reduce the non-obligatory.

ABSTRACT
The paper aims at exploring the myth of fertility associated with Oldoinyo Lengai and its impacts to
Maasai community in Gregorian rift valley system in northern Tanzania. It assumes that in African
spirituality, myths are used to guide the knowledge, values and practices in the community and
Mother Nature. Fertility is among major transformation event in human life circles that can be
reflected through community myth. Through in-depth interviews and observation techniques primary
data relating to culture, customs and traditions were obtained. Documentary search was employed to
supplement field data. The study found out that Maasai community depended on the Oldoinyo Lengai
(Mountain of God) for fertility of human and animals. The fertility myth among the Maasai provided
pressure to both to prefer many children. The myth encouraged the dominance of promiscuous
behaviour. Maasai experienced deterioration of health, due to bearing many children with limited
maternal health care as well as spread of sexually transmitted diseases. It is concluded here that the
myth of Oldoinyo Lengai in relation to the fertility has caused incredible adverse impact to Maasai
community in particular and Tanzania in general. Human dignity has been lowered, health and
physical capacity has declined. The study recommended that health education and services should be
extended to the villages in the vicinity of Oldoinyo Lengai. The education and service providers should
be well trained to integrated nature of the myth and their side effects to the community in relation to
the changing nature of socio-economic landscape. Moreover, it is imperative to empower the
community members economically and socially so that they can decide their fate and exercised their
consent.

The level of financial exclusion in sub-Saharan Africa particularly Nigeria is tremendously increasing,
despite the effort of Governments to curtail this menace. This exclusion negatively affects the
development of private sector businesses on its ability to source funds from banks at times of need;
Islamic banking products by its nature is expected to meet the needs of its entrepreneurial customers.
The relationship and contribution of Islamic banking products to entrepreneurship development is
expected to be positive. However, this relationship is not tested in the North Eastern part of Nigeria,
which has religious, ethnic and cultural diversity and recently affected by problem of insecurity. This
study aims at using the knowledge, awareness and readiness of entrepreneurs to patronise Islamic
banking products in Gombe State, which in turn assess the level of perceived relationship between
Islamic banking products and entrepreneurship development. Although this is an ongoing research, the
researcher is ready to go to the field for investigation about the propositions given. Field study survey
design will be used in collecting information through a structured questionnaire targeting 200
respondents to test the relationship between and contribution of Islamic banking products and its
ability to meet entrepreneurs’ need of funding. Some propositions are made based on the issue at
hand/current findings on the literature review, which are to be analysed using SPSS20 software.
