Introduction to Oil Painting: Beginner/
Intermediate
Bob Jamison. Wow! This is a must for
those who think that they can only muster
up about 10% talent…have Bob show you
that the rest of creating a masterpiece is
technique. Just think of your own oil painting
hanging above the fireplace. “Painting does
not have to be expensive. Gee, I used to use
a pizza box with a piece of wax paper for a
pallet and a basting brush from the 99 cent
store for a brush, it worked great.” You will
be taught the do’s and don’ts of purchasing
art supplies, and the needed techniques
of applying oils to a canvas to get the most
dazzle from your work. In your first class, you
will be watching a painting demonstration in
which a complete painting will be completed
in 45 minutes. One lucky student will be
taking this painting home at the end of the
first night. An intermediate class is offered
for those who have some prior oil painting
experience. You’ve got the supplies and know
how to mix your palette, so let’s jump right into
painting. Bob will show you how to increase
your painting skills to a more advanced level
as you work on your individual project. No
class or Feb 15. Recreation Center Kitchen.

beauty of the natural world to inspire others to
appreciate the wonders around us.

and enjoys teaching both in her studio and

Intro to the Whys and Wherefores of
Watercolor
5 wks
Laura Dicus. Watercolor is a very
fresh intriguing medium, but can be quite
challenging. Laura’s beginner class provides
a comfortable environment for artists
interested in trying out watercolor. During
short demonstrations and mini-lectures, Laura
will be teaching fundamental techniques that
apply to any subject or style, leaving plenty of
time for you to paint. We will be focusing on
basic methods that give you the understanding
of how to successfully work in this medium. Development of good habits is an important
part of the agenda. Laura will also provide
information about choosing materials from
the sometimes bewildering array of those
available. Many materials will be provided in
class to limit your initial costs of exploring the
medium. The class is limited to 6 students so
that you receive plenty of individual attention. Laura’s “Watercolor Materials Overview”
booklet will be available to students, a $15
value. Those who need help with building their
arsenal of tools and materials are encouraged
to take the Materials Overview workshop
before the first class. Class format: alternating
demonstrations and brief lectures with time
working on your painting, plus (gentle) critique
sessions. A $39.25 materials fee is payable
to the instructor at the first class. Recreation

Laura Dicus. Art supply stores are
our playground, yet we can become very
overwhelmed when it comes to purchasing our
materials and supplies. What kind of brush
should I get? I like this color of paint, why does
it act funny? What’s the best paper for me? Can I skimp and buy the “cheap stuff”? Take
advantage of Laura’s trial-and-error! She will
take you through options for paper, brushes,
paint, palettes and miscellaneous supplies
for the watercolor artist. This will help you to
spend your money on materials that are right
for you and avoid drawers and shelves full
of things you might not use more than once.

intriguing medium, but can be challenging

class is perfect for artists with experience

will also guide each student as their paintings
progress, suggesting alternative techniques,
tools, materials and/or color in gentle
critiques. This is a more informal class with
a focus on helping individual students with
their own projects. There are no limitations

Botanical Drawing for Beginners
4 wks
Laura Dicus. We’ve all seen an
instructional book or video and heard “I’ve
transferred my drawing to the paper…” leaving
us with questions as to how the artist arrived
at the line drawing. In this class, Laura will
teach you several methods to analyze and
reconstruct components by concentrating
on accurate measurements, angles and
proportions. You will learn to recognize plant
structures in order to render your subject true to
form. As botanical drawing requires accurate,
detailed representation of a particular flower
or plant so that it is recognizable, we will work
from life rather than photographs. This will
give you more information in order to produce
a realistic outline drawing and value study
for your painting. Class format: alternating
demonstrations and brief lectures, with time
working on your painting, plus (gentle) critique
sessions. Recreation Center Kitchen.

Security isn’t daunting enough; employees
in the Social Security Administration are
not trained or allowed to give advice on the

income, it is critical to have somewhere to turn
for guidance. This seminar will provide the
information for making informed decisions.
As a follow up to the course, if requested,
