Curious how Pope Francis ends his day? Well, he shared this personal detail during
today’s General Audience. This morning in St. Peter’s Square, the Holy Father continued
his catechesis for the Holy Year of Mercy, turning to Jesus’ healing of the leper (Lk 5:1214). Francis recalled that at Jesus’ time, lepers were considered unclean and bound by law
to avoid contact with others. Saint Luke tells of one leper, moved by faith, who did not fear
to pass among the crowds and beg Jesus to cleanse him. “All that this man does and says,
[this man] who was considered impure, is an expression of his faith!” Francis said, noting he
recognizes the power of Jesus, certain of His power to cure him.
“The leper’s supplication,” the Pope explained, “shows that when we present ourselves
to Jesus, long speeches are not necessary. A few words suffice, though accompanied by
full confidence in His omnipotence and in His goodness. In fact, to entrust ourselves to the
will of God means to submit to His infinite mercy.” “In the evening, before going to bed, I
pray this brief prayer: ‘Lord, if you will, you can cleanse me!’ And I pray five ‘Our Fathers,’
one for each wound of Jesus, because Jesus has purified us with His wounds. “But if I do
this, you can also do it at home,” Francis encouraged, telling them to say: ‘Lord, if you will,
you can cleanse me!’ As one does this, Francis said, “Think of Jesus’ wounds and say an Our
Father for each one of them, for Jesus always listens to us.”
The Pope, who has never shied away from gestures toward “the excluded,” recalled how
Jesus stretched His hand and even touched this leper, rejected by society. “How many
times we meet a poor man who comes to us?!” Francis asked, “We can even be generous, we
can have compassion, but usually we do not touch him. We offer him money, we throw it
there, but we avoid touching his hand.” When we keep this distance, the Holy Father underscored, we forget that that person is part of the Body of Christ, for Jesus taught us to not be
afraid to touch the poor and excluded. “To touch a poor man can purify us of hypocrisy and
render us concerned for his condition. Touch the excluded,” Francis said, reminding those
gathered of the refugees with him on the stage. Before concluding, the Holy Father urged
those present to every night kneel before God and pray: “Lord, if you will, you can make
me clean!”

TODAY’S GOSPEL
Read: Luke 10:1-12; 17-20
“Lord, even the demons are subject to us because
of your name.”
Being a disciple of Jesus wasn’t always fun back in the
day. Hot and sweaty, cold and tired, thirsty and hungry;
these conditions were part of the routine for three long
years. Days of miraculous interventions and spectacular
healings were followed by other days of being chased out
of town, or questioned and criticized. But on the day of
the appointment of seventy-two missionaries, things went
very well. Folks were healed, and this time the demons
were chased out of town. The kingdom of God really did
seem at hand and the disciples were ready to celebrate
their successes.
Jesus doesn’t take away their successes, but restores
them to their rightful owner: God. The power that
works through the seventy-two today is only on load.
Give God the glory!
REDISCOVER LOVE IN YOUR MARRIGE

just a social gathering or series of seminars, but rather a way
to rediscover and rekindle the loving relationship in your marriage. Tens of thousands of couples have successfully saved their

YOUTH MINISTRY NEWS
I am happy to announce that Mrs. Lauren Kinslow-Finore will
serve as our Youth Minister on a part-time basis. She had previously
been serving as our Youth Minister on a very limited scale, as well as
teaching the 7th grade PREP class and running some sacramental
preparation retreats. Lauren has a degree from St. Joseph’s University
and a master’s in Religion and Religious Education with a concentration in Youth and Young Adult Ministry from Fordham University.
Prior to coming back to the area, she taught Middle High School
Religion and was a campus minister in New York City. Lauren will
now have a much greater presence at the parish as she helps plan and
run Youth Ministry. Youth Ministry encompasses both the Junior
High and High School Youth Groups, who meet regularly for faith

PSALM 51:3-6, 1, 16
Be merciful, O Lord, for we have sinned. (Psalm Response)
Often, when we go to Confession, we put all the attention on our
sins, on how badly we have acted. It’s a bit ironic, though, considering how we have all been taught that our sinfulness is never
greater than God’s love and his mercy. Perhaps we should try to
focus on the Lord just as much!
“Lord, I know you are good, I know that your plans are for my good
and that you want nothing but good for me. And yet my choices aren’t
always for that good. Forgive me for those choices. Because you are
a loving Father, remove my guilt. Give me the grace I need to make
choices according to your love and not according to my selfishness.
“You are compassionate, Father! You are always concerned for me.
You know how I am made. You know my strengths and my weaknesses. You feel for me when I suffer, even when the problem is of my
own making. You shower me with kindness and gentle correction.
You never lash out at me; instead, you reach toward me to draw me
back to yourself. I acknowledge my offense against you and turn my
heart toward you. Once more, I rest against your heart and allow
your love to flow into me and heal me.
“Lord, you are thorough. Whenever you begin something, you see
it to completion. That goes for your work in my life as much as for
anything else. You want what is best for me, and you won’t be satisfied
until you have led me past the wounds and sins that keep me from
you. Forgive me for doubting that I can ever change. Forgive me for
doubting that you care about me even when I fall short of your plans.
Fill me with unshakable trust in your loving and untiring help.
“Father, you are my teacher. I believe that you want to lead me in
your way. Forgive me for the times when I have rejected you and
have decided to set out on my own. Thank you that despite my
waywardness, you continue to pursue me. I will rejoice in your
goodness and kindness to me always.”
“Thank you, Father, for your mercy. Thank you for your
faithfulness to me. Lord, help me to follow you more closely.”

GOOD THINGS ABOUT GETTING OLDER
Finally, you can eat dinner at 4:00 PM.
Your investment in health insurance is beginning to pay off.
Kidnappers aren’t very interested in you.
It’s harder and harder for sexual harassment charges to stick.
People no longer view you as a hypochondriac.
Your secrets are safe with your friends because they can’t
remember them either.
Your supply of brain cells is finally down to a manageable size.
Your eyes won’t get much worse.
The things you buy now won’t wear out.
No one expects you to run into a burning building.
You don’t need the shingles with the 30 year guarantee.
There is no need to spend money for a psychic to see your future.
There’s nothing left to learn the hard way.
Your joints are more accurate than the National Weather Service.
Buying cheap tires and not rotating them makes economic sense.
You may never have to vacuum under the bed again.
Taking the shortest magazine subscription is economically
defensible.
In a hostage situation you’re likely to be released first.
LAUGH WITH THE PASTOR

FLAME OF LOVE CENACLE
Dear St. Mary Magdalen Parishioner:
We recently received your Pastor’s permission to start a Flame of Love Cenacle in
your parish. This Cenacle of Reparation currently meets in the Adoration Chapel
on Friday from Noon to 1 PM. We would want you, who are able, to come and
join us in these Flame of Love prayers. Each week a short teaching is given followed
by the Flame of Love Rosary and other prayers.
To facilitate these ongoing devotions, as well as to consider your availability to
be with us, we ask if you would respond to the following:
• Are you able to come and join us on Friday at Noon for this special Holy Hour?
• Or, are you at work at this time of the day, and thus unable to join us?
• Would you be able to come in the early evening on a week night, (e.g., 7 PM
on Thursday)? If so, what night and time would be suitable to your home
and work schedule to come and pray?
• Or, are you not interested in attending a Parish Flame of Love Cenacle of
Reparation, and thus are unable to attend?
Your immediate responses and feedback are important to us. Our Flame of Love
National Director, Anthony Mullen, has directed me to contact you and also to receive your responses. I am J. Brian Morley. My email address is rowers3@verizon.
net. My home phone number is (610) 558-4593. Or you may send your response
to Regina Dougherty, the Cenacle Leader. Her number is (610)-565-0694. Her
home address is: 110 Water Mill Lane, Media, PA 19063. Finally, her email address
is [email protected]. Thank you in advance for promptly getting back to us.
May the Flame of Love of the Immaculate Heart of Mary burn ever so brightly in
you and your parish!
Sincerely,
J. Brian Morley—Flame of Love Leadership Team
