October 2008 Thank you to everyone who was able to attend our Picnic on the Playground. It was great to see Wildcats young and old come by and celebrate our new playground and catch up on all the news from the summer break. Thanks to everyone who organized and supported our fundraising. What a great gift to give our Wildcats of today and those who will be with us tomorrow. We are glad that you enjoyed the coffee, tea and hot chocolate that we served that evening. We had many wonderful comments. As you know the coffee, tea and hot chocolate that we were featuring is a fundraising activity for our Wildcats. We will use all the funds raised from this activity for supporting our students’ field trips and class activities. The Farmer First Fairly Traded Organic Coffee is produced by small coffee farming families in Mexico, Guatemala, Bolivia, Peru and other countries. The farmers are certified organic and the coffee is fairly traded at good prices. With our newsletter you will find an order form for coffee, tea and hot chocolate. Please fill out the form and send your payment with your child. With this fundraiser you may order more than once as people tend to run out of coffee and tea. Again, we thank you for your supporting our school activities. We have a lot of things going on this month. The Naramata Run, Guitar Club, Soccer Games, Fire Safety Assembly, PAC Halloween Dance, Halloween Sing-A-Long, Awards Assemblies, and in particular on October 15th and October 16th we have parent teacher interviews. The interviews provide a great opportunity for you to see your child’s classroom and talk with his/her teacher. The teachers are all looking forward to meeting with you and answering your questions. These interviews are very beneficial and I look forward to seeing you and your children in hallways and classrooms on these important days. Have a wonderful Thanksgiving, Wildcats, and thank you for the help, support and advice that you give to the little school on the hill. Code of Conduct Our school ‘Code of Conduct’ reads “It is my responsibility to dress neatly and appropriately”. Here are some guidelines for clothing we consider appropriate for school: Shorts – length should be about mid thigh, no “short” shorts Hats – no hats or hoodies worn indoors Tops – tops or tank tops with shoulder straps at least 3 fingers wide • No “spaghetti” or “string” straps. • No strapless tops. • Bellies and belly buttons must be covered. Skirts, Dresses, etc. – appropriate length • No “see through” clothing. Pictures and Logos • No slang or rude pictures or logos • No “gang” or “bad attitude” pictures or logos Thank you for helping our students dress neatly and appropriately for school. When the preview photos taken on Monday, September 29th are returned, please remember to check the due date on the envelope. Late orders must be sent directly to the photographer. Picture retakes will be taken on Wednesday, October 29th. If you would like your child to have a retake picture, or if your child missed the first picture day, please pick up a photo order envelope from the school office, add payment and present to the photographer on picture retake day. Please REMEMBER to phone the school (770-7698) for our safe arrival program if your child is going to be absent. Students arriving late for school, must report to the office before going to class. Thank you for using these planners. Students can develop valuable organizational skills by using them. We also appreciate the communication link that these planners provide. It would be helpful if parents would list their home, work and emergency numbers inside the planners for their child in case of emergency. ** Notes can also be placed in the planners to remind your child about after school arrangements. Calling the school to contact your child or to pass along messages should only occur when it is urgent. We invite you to attend our next meeting scheduled for Tuesday, October 21st at 7:00 p.m. in our school library. Brilliant Brains Bookclub – Healthy Readers Remember to try to reach your goal of 20 minutes of reading each night, 5 nights a week. Fill in your bookmark and bring it to Nature’s Fare for a free treat. The past and present students, staff and families of West Bench Elementary would like to thank all the local businesses, organizations and individuals who contributed to our playground fundraising over the past year and a half. Our West Bench Wildcats and our community are now enjoying a fantastic new playground that will serve the school and neighbourhood for many years to come. Without everyone’s support this playground would not have been possible. THANK YOU!!!!
