24. Summer Supt Report-2016
Superintendent’s Report – Summer 2016
Budget Update
The June business meeting of the School Board was
pushed back a week from its normally schedule time
in the hopes that the state budget would be passed, so
any changes could be formulated into the district’s
budget. However, that plan did not materialize for
the district. The 2016-2017 Budget was approved on
June 27, 2016.
2016-2017 District Goal
Making Lives Better
Student achievement is our goal. Our number
one indicator is for all of our students to have the
necessary experiences to develop the knowledge
and skills for their chosen career path.
How do we get there?
Class Size Update
We will continue to monitor our elementary class size to
ensure that our students are provided the best education.
We get there by fostering relationships with our
students to the degree that we can customize our
learning environment to support their strengths,
needs, and interests.
To achieve this end, we will:

The Great Lebanon Community Project!
Dr. Bartley worked with a committee to develop a great idea…....
hop on, here we go!!
Dr. Bartley wrote Chapter 1 of the book The Great Lebanon
Community Project, which is posted on our website. Hannah
Moore, 9th Grade student at LHS, created the cover.
This project looks to impact our students in two ways: creativity and
community involvement. Our proposal is to work closely with Mayor
Capello on projects that are related to our waterways and watershed.
We want to involve K-12 students in hands-on learning projects that
are directly related to our community. The Mayor has requirements to fulfill for both the Pa Department of
Environment Protection and the Environmental Protection Agency. Students will be testing water quality,
assisting with storm water drains, and public service announcements. In addition, they will be developing the
skills necessary to be good citizens in the 21st century.
Mr. Dale Ludwig submitted the Farmers Insurance Dream Big Teacher Challenge Grant. Dale received
notification that he has been selected as one of only 15 Finalists for the Thank America’s Teachers Dream Big
Teacher challenge!
What happened next? On August 24, 2016, a team from California attended our Opening Day celebration to
meet, film, and interview Dale about his proposal. Farmers empowers our communities to choose who
wins! Six teachers total will win a $100,000 grant each by public vote. Throughout the month of October, the
proposal summary video will be available online for public review and vote. Everyone can vote once a day,
everyday in October. Good luck Dale!
Students are given the task of naming this project. The winner will be announced
on September 21st, 2016, at an all district assembly to be held at Alumni Stadium.
That will be just about one week before the Fireball Run will close down
Cumberland Street on September 27th, a date that Dr. Bartley is declaring an
“Official No Homework Night!”
We are in need of 2,000 books for our elementary children. The book is titled
All the Way to the Ocean and tells the story of two boys who learn that runoff
carries litter and other pollutants through storm drains to the ocean. It will help
our children to understand the importance of restoring our watershed.
Dr. Bartley submitted a grant to the Fireball Run. We need to wait to see if we
are selected for the funding.
The Fireball Run adventure travel series rolls into Lebanon on Tuesday,
September 27, from 3 to 7 PM. The streets of Lebanon will be closed as
Teams scatter to solve trivia to find top secret locations involving local
businesses, historical and agricultural attractions.

WellSpan Good Samaritan Hospital
Partnership
Mr. Thomas Harlow, Senior VP-WSH &
President of WellSpan GSH attended our July
Board Meeting.
WellSpan GSH has awarded the Lebanon
School District the Healthy Students, Healthy
Community Grant. The grant will provide up
to $83,000 in each of the next three years, for
a total of $249,000, which will be used to add
a nurse at Lebanon Middle School.
Thank you WellSpan GSH. Without this
grant, this position would not be affordable.
This grant will also help us with our STEAM
(Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts,
Math) initiative.
Collective Bargaining Agreement
Negotiations went extremely well. The
Lebanon Education Association Collective
Bargaining Agreement, effective 7/1/2016 to
6/30/2019, was approved in August.
Moment of Silence
A Moment of Silence was held at the opening of
our July Board Meeting for Yassin Boudriss.
Yassin was a 2nd grade student at Northwest
Elementary School. We will hold a special
place in our hearts for Yassin.

More New Partnerships
We will be working with Sweep the Streets - a
grassroots team of committed citizens, and the
Knights of 21st Century.
We will be assisting troubled students who find
themselves expelled from school due to
disciplinary concerns. This program will provide
direction, mentorship, and learning opportunities
for students who need a second chance.
We are very excited about this new partnership.
Upcoming Events:
Thursday, August 18 – First PAC/PTA
meeting – 6 PM in our Boardroom. Nikki
Twaryonas is our new PAC/PTA president.
Monday, September 12 – our School Board
will recognize the students and staff who
achieved perfect attendance during the
2015-2016 school year.
Northwest Elementary Update
Hooray, our School Board of Directors
unanimously approved the purchase of 19.41
acres of land, to be used at the site to construct a
new Northwest Elementary School campus!
This is very exciting for the Lebanon
Community.
The project will be going out to bid in September.
Safety and Security
We continue to work hard to keep our schools
safe. Our first Safe and Healthy Schools
meeting will be held on September 14, 2016.
Our Mayor, Chief of Police and other
community members are invited to attend our
meetings to discuss safety issues.
