For scoreboard watchers, 2011 was the
year of Novak Djokovic, but during the
Serb’s Wimbledon semifinal against JoWilfried Tsonga, there was no question
that for those who prefer tennis mixed
with art, irony and athleticism, Jo-Willy
is the guy. In a day when tennis is littered
with one-dimensional baseline bashing,
Tsonga delivers the perfect potion. He
has cultivated an exquisite attacking
game, punctuated by artfully angled midcourt volleys, lunging drop shots, wicked
overhead smashes and much more.
When he is at his most flamboyant, the
dashing Frenchman has the ability to
bring full stadiums to their feet. If tennis
weren’t measured by games, sets and
matches but rather by athleticism and
entertainment value, Tsonga’s ranking
would be difficult to top.

Andrea Petkovic was not listed in the
“One’s to Watch” section because, quite
frankly, everybody is already watching
her. Petkovic is a blessing for women’s
tennis. In 2011, she led a quartet of
German women that are rising in the
rankings and is one of the most entertaining performers on tour. Whether
fans tuned into Petko on the court,
where she busted a top ten ranking (No.
1 in celebratory dances), on Twitter,
where she disclosed her favorite movies
and current crushes, or on her website,
previewing her new synth-pop tracks
(Ich will ‘ne Band sein rocks!), Petkovic
reminded us that sport is entertainment,
and in this regard, she makes the grade
on the WTA Tour.
