November - Oak Hill Country Club
November 2014
Rochester and Oak Hill
Shine at the 52nd John R. Williams Invitational
L-r: Guest speaker Tim Rosaforte, David Fries,
Jason Ballard
It was a banner weekend for Rochester and Oak Hill at the Williams.
The event began with the appearance of Golf Channel’s Tim
Rosaforte to serve as the guest
speaker during the Wil-Am dinner.
The field of 76 two-man teams featured some of the highest ranking
amateur, mid-amateur and senior
golfers from across the US, Canada,
and even Europe.
In the Amateur Division, recent
University of Rochester graduate,
Nick Palladino, and his partner,
Oliver White, came out on top by
an impressive 7 shots. After an
exemplary career at the U of R,
highlighted by his triumph at the
prestigious Monroe Invitational
Championship, Palladino had originally intended to turn professional
after graduation in May. After garnering an invite to The Williams,
however, he elected to postpone his
professional aspirations to compete
in one last event on a course that has
meant so much to him. It turned out
to be a victorious decision!
Finishing 2nd was reigning
Pennsylvania Amateur Champion,
John Sawin, and his partner, Jason
Gerken. Tying for 3rd place was
Amateur Division Winners, l-r: Oliver White,
Nick Palladino
Ritter (Davie, FL)/Russell
Olson (Weston, FL). This
marks the first time an Oak
Hill team has won the Senior
Division title.
The teams of the John R.
Williams Tournament have
joined together for over 50 years
and have returned home to tell
fond tales of Oak Hill. Many
participants serve as raters for
golf ’s most subscribed publications, a fact that certainly
contributes to our continued
ranking amongst the greatest
courses in the world.
This event could not have been
possible without the tremendous
support of the Club membership,
and the tireless efforts of the clubhouse, grounds, and golf professional staffs. Thanks to all for showcasing this magnificent event at Oak
Hill.
Oak Hill’s Shawn Baker and former
OH assistant professional, Davidde
Giordano. Oak Hill members Jim
Mason and Andrew Kay would finish in a tie for 11th.
Of note, Chris Sekella of NaperPhotos by Kevin Morton
ville, IL, would make a hole-in-one
on the 3rd hole of
the East course in
round 1. Just a few
hours later, the feat
would be equaled
(and the skin cut up)
by Andrew Kay!
In the Senior
Division, the Oak
Hill team of Mark
Dugan and Tom
Blank would claim
their first victory in
this event by 2 shots
over two teams,
James Castagna
(Sandy Spring,
MD)/Tim Krouse
(Dunn Loring,
Senior Division Winners with Tournament Chairmen, l-r: David
MD) and Doug
Fries, Tom Blank, Mark Dugan, Dylan Bronson From the Tee
by Jason Ballard,
Head Golf Professional

Linehan Open
On October 6 we held our annual
GSC Tim Linehan Tournament.
The Linehan family had supported
the Golf Service Center for many
years and the Club has continued
the tradition. This year’s winning
team was Gene Bernardo, Tim
Triniski, and Kyle Conklin.
Message from the
General Manager
by Chad Ellis
Once again Oak Hill has been
chosen to be in the prestigious
group of Clubs who have received
the PLATINUM CLUB DESIGNATION. This designation is given to only the top 4% of the Clubs
in the United States. The Board of
Governors, membership and staff
are proud to have Oak Hill recognized as a leader in the club industry. This award is determined by
industry professionals who consider
many factors while ranking clubs.
Over the past three months a
focus group made up of employees
has been working extremely hard to
renovate the employee area. From
the ceiling tiles to the cabinetry,
the committee has been focused on
creating a world class experience for
Oak Hill employees. On Tuesday,
September 16, their hard work was
recognized and the Front Nine was
opened. I would like to thank the
committee members Cheol Kessler,
Mike Gallagher, Ted Vogt, Ellen
McCadden, Lisa Kennelley, Laura
Davola and Chef Jacob Anderson
for all their hard work. I would also
like to thank our hard working
maintenance team for a job well
done.
Our Food and Beverage hours
of operation for the Fall and Winter
Season started October 13 and are
in effect until April 4, 2015. Please
note the hours of operation.

and Mike Jones.
The 9th Annual Heritage Classic
saw some new faces along with some
veterans as everyone had a great
time playing with pre-1930 hickory
shafted clubs. All agreed the hickory
clubs gave them a special appreciation for the game of Walter Hagen
and Bobby Jones.
This year’s winning team was
led by three time winners Bill
Schwert and Mike Jones joined by
newcomers Ed Kay and Doug
Phillips. Their team finished with
an impressive two under par net 34.
Following close behind and in second place was the team of Beau
Baregard along with Mark and
Steven Valerio with a net 38. Mark
Valerio would also take home the
“closest to the pin” award. Rounding
out the three was a veteran team
of Bill Reeves with Fred and Judy
Beltz. Best dressed gent went to Ed
Kay sporting a very sharp fedora

and Judy Beltz wearing classic
Stewart plaid plus-fours.
Following the matches everyone
met in the Terrace Room and
enjoyed prizes, cocktails and a display of some very rare and unusual
golf clubs and equipment. Dr. Rocky
Tarantello brought a most unusual
golf stand bag from the late 1800’s
along with both a very rare “water”
iron and “rake” iron. Other clubs of
interest included some long nose
clubs made by Old Tom Morris and
dating back to the feather ball era.
If you missed this year’s event
be sure to watch for the date next
year which will be the 10th annual
and some special events are planned.
Jason Ballard was heard suggesting
that some of the assistant professionals might participate... that
could be a lot of fun.
Fred Beltz
You won’t want to miss

new light! We promise

exciting information
soon.
We would like to thank all the WilAm contestants and dinner guests
for attending this year’s event on
September 17. The weather was
fantastic, sunny in the mid 70’s and
the East Course was in excellent
condition.
Congratulations to the winning
team of Tom Huber, Carl Smith
and their JR Williams contestant
partners John Kirchner and John
Salamone. In second place was the
team of Fred Beltz, Randy Cofield
and JR Williams contestants Bill
Pizza and Paul Cannon. With third
place going to the team of Chris
Bowen, Kevin Morton and JR Williams contestants Richard Kerper
and Michael Walters.
After golf, everyone enjoyed a
great dinner with our guest speaker
and veteran senior writer at Golf
World Magazine, Tim Rosaforte.
Tim has been a golf writer for over
30 years traveling the world attending all of the major tournaments
numerous times while earning
unparalleled access to golf ’s biggest
names. He shared numerous stories,
both personal and professional,
about his unique interactions within
every level of the golf world. He finished with a very interesting Q & A
session with some focus on the then
upcoming Ryder Cup.
Special thanks to Jason Ballard,
his assistants, the Golf Shop staff,
Jeff Corcoran, Dave Dennison and
all their staff that make this event
such a success every year. Shawn Marshall and Griff Owen,

2014 WAOH Acorn Award
The 2014 WAOH Acorn Award
was presented posthumously to Gay
Maney at the Closing Dinner on
September 30. LeAnn DiMarzo
accepted the award on behalf of her
mother with her family, Bob Maney
and special friends joining her.
The Acorn Award is given to a
woman who consistently goes above
and beyond in her commitment to
Oak Hill and our community. Gay
was a very special woman with her
smile, positive attitude, passion to
help others and get things done. Gay was involved in every aspect of
Oak Hill; Holiday decorating, 18Hole Golf Chair, House and Entertainment Committees, Co-Chair
of the Community Relations Committee for the 2008 Senior PGA
Championship and the 2013 PGA
Championship and the President of
the Rotary Club...the list could go
on and on.
With Gay’s initiative and sustained commitment, the successful
joint PGA/Oak Hill Reach for the
Green Scholarship (RFTG) became
official to address a major community need of educating the Rochester
city youth. Since 2009 there have
been 12 scholarship recipients. The
RFTG Board and the PGA of
America changed the name to the
Gay R. Maney Reach for the Green
Scholarship, in honor of Gay’s dedication to Oak Hill and her community. For more information on

Home and Garden
Autumn Outing to the
Finger Lakes
This September, 25 WAOH members traveled by private limo to the
Wegmans Organic Farm on Canandaigua Lake. The weather turned
out to be perfect for our guided
walking tour of the beautiful farm
grounds. We learned about growing
fruits and vegetables year round,
seed growth, test gardens, movable
high tunnels, chicken coups and
honey production.
Following the tour, our group
headed back into town to the
NY Wine and Culinary Center’s
Upstairs Bistro overlooking Canandaigua Lake, where we enjoyed
lunch made with locally-sourced
ingredients.
Thanks to all the ladies who
