The officers, directors and entire membership of the Bicycle Institute of America extend their
warmest greetings and most sincere congratulations to the members of the Amateur Bicycle League of
America.
From your youngest novice rider to your most seasoned veteran, you represent the finest in
American sports and epitomize the best that cycling has to offer. DUring this week-long event, man and
machine will be put to the severest test in the highly charged atmosphere of a national event. We are
confident that each of you will prove worthy of that test.
All eyes are upon you during this National Championship event, and you share equally in the
excitement and thrills of this annual classic.
From all of us in the industry to all of you in the sport, our very best wishes for your success, today
and every day.
Sincerely yours,
S. B. Ross, President
Bicycle Institute of America
The amazing growth of cycling popularity in America in recent years is probably the most powerful
grass roots movement in the history of the country.
Whole new classes of riders from all walks of life
and from all age groups have swelled the ranks of the cycling fraternity to over 70 million people .
The officers, directors and riders of the Amateur Bicycle League of America can be justly proud of
the role they have played in popularizing bicycling through their dedication to the sport and their constant
efforts to elevate competitive cycling to its rightful place on the American sports scene.
The National Championship bike races are the culmination of a year of effort. The very existence
of this event is a triumph for every participant . . . every rider is a champion or he wouldn't be here.
Congratulations to each and everyone of you.
The Bicycle I nstitute of America is proud to be
numbered among your true friends and ardent supporters. We wish you all the checkered flag of victory.
Sincerely yours,
John Auerbach, Executive Director

up ... sitting down. Which is kind of tough on
the body. Because it tends to wither away.
Physical exercise treats your body
right. It pays. It tones up the m uscles. Encour
ages the heart. Blows the cobwebs out of
your brain.
You don't have to be a pro. Or
knock yourself out in competition.
Just get moving. Pick up a sp ort!

Better Believe t. Maintaining law and order is serious
business. That's why this Police Depart
ment on Fire Island, N.Y., rides patrol
on ROSS bicycles.
You see, the island is covered with
people and sandy beaches. There are no
roads or highways. Just miles of narrow
sidewalks and promenades . So while a
standard police vehicle would have to
pick its way through the crowds, over
sand and through coas tal winds and
downpours ... these pedal pushing offi
cers zip qui c kly to trouble spots without
delay.
. and
They demand dependability .
that 's where over a quarter of a century
of experience and our quality control
program come in. We chec k and re-check
every single step of our manufa cturing
process to ensure only the finest hand
crafted quality. That means you enjoy
unlimited, trouble-free riding pleasure.
All ROSS hand crafted preci s ion built bi
cycles, from our coaster brake, 3, 5 and
10-speed lightweights, to coaster brake,
3 and 5-speed Polo bikes, Barracudas,
Apollos and 16" and 20" Convertible

KENOSHA, MILWAUKEE HOSTED '72 CHAMPIONSHIPS the time Han s recuperated, the fleeting
Campbell was length s ahead . But, Nuern
berg was not to be out done as he captured
th e second rid e. Then came th e exciting
finale with the two youngster s shoulder
to shoulder with Campbell tak ing the top
The 1972 National Bicycl e Champion
ships were hosted by two citi es with two
separate champion ship committees. This
was the fir st time that such a promotion
of th e national s has occurred. And, as all
who attended will attest, th e champion
ships were a smashing success .
The spectators were treated to some
of the best racing seen in many years on
both the road and track . Few will forg et
the final eve nt of the track championsh ips
as Bobby Phillips of Baltimore, captured
his second Te n Mile Champion sh ip with a
come from behind move rem ini scent of
th at fa mous race horse, Car ry Back . Other
outstanding performance on th e track
came from Gary Campbell in the matches.
In the first round of the final for th e
sprint championship, Camp be ll caught
Hans Nuernberg in an emba rrassing situa
tion. With 3/4ths of a lap to go, Nuern
berg looked ov er his inside shoulder to
keep his eye on Gary . But, Ga ry was no
where to be see n. He had m ad e a surpri se
move around th e top of hi s o pp one nt . By
honors.
On the road, the events were equally
exciting. Seventeen year ·old Debbie Brad·
ley of Iowa stunned the crowd as she sped
to the line ju st nipping vet e ran Jeanne
Omelenchuk in the Women s title event.
Andre Berclaz of New York became the
first official veterans' road champion
breaking away from the field for a solo
victory. The junior race had to be decided
by photos as Ted Waterbury of Ohio and
Dave Spohn of Wisconsin crossed the tape
in what appeared to be a dead heat. But,
when th e polaroid was developed it was
cl ear that Wate rbury wa s the new cham
pion.
Th e senior event was no differ e nt. As
th e field e nte red the fi na l 500 meters, a
large group re mained to cont est the title

dash . Wayne Stetina of Indiana, riding in
his first senior title event, put on a furiou s
sprint for the tape . Bob Schne ider of Wi s
consin was right on his tail. With 25 yards
to go, it looked as if Stetina would hold
off the challenge by Schneider. And then,
out of nowhere (or so it appeared) John
Howard of Missouri rocketed to the front
to nip the 19 year-old Indiana flash by
inches.
And so another exciting National
Championsh ips was brought to a fitting
close. As usual , th e riders put forth tre·
mendous efforts wh ich make every race
well worth th e time to watch. The League
and its members would like to thank those
individuals who made the 1972 Champion
ships the success that they were. We look
forward to returning again to the Keno sha
track as it is one of the finest in the States.
And, we did not have long t o wait for our
return to Milwaukee as the local com
mittee is now sponsoring and promoting
the 1973 Road Cham p ionships.

THE NATIONALS !I!
Why do so many athletes congregate each
year at the host site of the National Cy
cling Championships? Why do they spend
so much money for these events? Why
do they spend so many hours in prepara
tion each day for the championships?
This can only be answered by each indi
vidual athlete_ For each athlete has his
own personal reason for participating in
cycling competition_ If you want the true
answers, ask some of the competitors as
you m eet them during the week long
competition _
The athletes who are competing got to
the nationals in one of two ways_ Most of
them have qualified through their own
state championships which were held on
July 7th and 8th_ Each state is allowed a
certain number of qualifiers according to
th e number of registrations th at they have
in a particular class_ A ve ry se lect number
o f riders are allowed to ride the nationals
each year w ithout qual ify ing th rough th eir
state championships_ These riders are the
defending National Champion s_ And, this
year, certain juniors will be allowed to
rid e with o ut competing in the state cham
pionsh ips _ They were selected for the
WHAT'S IT ALL ABOUT? European Junior Championship Team and
were competing in Munich, Germany with
our National Junior Team from July 3rd
to the 8th_
National Championships are held for the
following classes of riders: Midgets (boys
and girls). Intermediates (boys and girl s).
Junior Men, Senior Women, Senior Men,
and Veteran Men _
The Midget boys and girls compete for
track championships only _ The inte rmed
iate girls also compete for a track cham
pionship only wh il e the boys have bot h
road and track ch ampionships.
T he
juniors also c o mp ete for bot h titles. Th E:
senior men and wome n have a more varied
sel e ction of championships. The women
compete in match springs, 3000 me ter
pursu it, a nd road. The men compete fo r
the kilom ete r, t he pursuit, t he match
sprint, the team pursuit, and the ten m ile
titles as well as th e road championsh ip.
The veterans go for broke on the road
only.
The track titles fo r th e midgets, inter-
mediates, and juniors have a series of
races_ Riders finishing in the top five
places in each event score points, 1st
7 pts _; 2nd-5 pts.; 3rd-3 pts.; 4th-2 pts_;
5th-' pt. The rider with the largest total
points at the end of the series is declared
the class champion.
The men's and women's track events are
separate championships within themselves
with the first three finishers in each re
ceiving medals, , st-gold ; 2nd-silver; 3rd
bronze . The road championsh ips are also
for th ree places with only one event to
decide the championship. The vets go 40
miles, the women 32, the men 120, the
juniors 48, and the intermediates 12.
The annual championships pack six ex
iting d ay s of racing into nine days_ In
between t he racing, new friendships are
made, old ones revived, an d past ones
remembered_
Leag ue meeti ngs aboun d
with the National Convention an d Board
of Direc t ors meetings in t he li meli ght.
And , the finale of each c hamp ionship,
the Banquet of Champion s, at which time
the champions and the runners-up re
ceive their awards and recognitio r. . An d
then its home to begin planning for the
next nationals. See you all nex t year.
