13th Annual Paws & Feet—SUCCESS!
Our Paws & Feet 5K Race and Walkathon took
place May 15th and if you joined us, supported a
participant, or sponsored the event; your contribution made this year’s event great!
An amazing 436 people participated in the event
which raised over $35,000! This event means so
much to the animals by bringing in much needed
funds for their care. Thank you so much for your
support! Without it, we wouldn’t be able to continue our life-saving programs and keep our doors
open to the thousands of homeless animals that
come to our door each year.

Comments from the Executive Director
I wish every pet had only one wonderful home for their entire life.
Unfortunately most shelter pets have three homes before they find
their fur-ever home. Imagine! You arrive, sniff around, eat some
new food and, after a bit of time, settle in. You develop a routine and
the place becomes your home. Then one day you are put in a box,
arrive at the shelter and watch your human family walk away. Your
old life is gone. You are examined, vaccinated, put in a foreign
place and the food is delivered at set times. Nice people come and
visit but you can’t walk freely around, stretch or do anything on your
own. After a few weeks or months you go “home” again only to have
this cycle of love found, love lost, repeat two more times. Each time the bond is broken a pet is at risk.
Sheltering is both wonderful in its intention and deeply sad because it is a necessity in today’s society.
To help reduce this cycle, AWA is working on new services. We are working with people to keep their pets, if
they can, by offering support services to them. Many of the reasons people cite for giving up their pets are correctable. By creating a “wrap around service approach” (a model that social services agencies do to help kids
and families) for that pet-person family, we can keep that pet in their home. Maybe the help comes in the form of
training tips, referral to an area veterinarian, or an insight into a recent change in the pet’s behavior - our staff is
now able to provide those answers.
When keeping the pet in the home is not an option, we partner with pet owners to help them find their pet his/her
next home without the pet going to any area shelter by offering Re-Homing support. Re-homing is based on the
knowledge that shelters are the #4 way pets make it into a home after #1 friends and family, #2 being found,
#3 newspaper ads. Helping people identify search tactics for finding a new home, helping them understand the
screening methods to use to feel secure about “giving away the pet” and then supporting them through the process does work.
Coming this fall our website will have a Virtual Shelter portal which will allow people to post the pets they are
looking to re-home so we can help these pets find new homes.
This new approach continues making our community pets safe and follows after other proactive programs which
were once considered radical and are now normal: adoption, spaying and neutering, fostering, and TNR (TrapNeuter-Return). Re-homing and retention aren’t about telling someone “No! We can’t take your pet!” Or, “You
need to keep your pet!” They are about listening to people and offering real solutions so the pet stays safe at
all times.

Summer is always the busiest time of year at AWA...and this year is no exception! Check out our Summer Photo Album to see what we’ve been up to! Our
“Raining Cats...No Dogs” promotion kicked off in late June. Our goal was to
find 300 cats and kittens new homes before the end of August. Just one week
away from our goal, we reached our 300th feline adoption! Left: Adoptions

the best with their terrific new family!

We would also like to congratulate
Red Bank Veterinary Hospital in
Tinton Falls for receiving the 2010
Hospital of the Year award for
excellence in veterinary hospital
design in the 45th annual Veterinary
Economics Hospital De-sign Competition. The hospital was the overall
winner in the Specialty Division. The
hospital is truly deserving but we know
that what goes on inside the building –
the loving care and compassionate
medicine – is what makes Red Bank
Veterinary Hospital really stand out!

Leaving a Lasting Legacy
“Everyone likes a puppy. There
needs to be a place that is able to
care for and adopt out the adult
dogs when they need a second
chance. No dog should ever be
hungry or hurt and AWA’s no-kill
beliefs are
progressive and something I want
to support.” Each year Ms. Winter’s
annual donations have helped
hundreds of pets
receive medical care and have
provided subsidized spaying/
neutering to address the pet abandonment problem at its core. “I
wish all people spayed and neutered their pets.”
Ms. Winter’s deep compassion for
AWA’s mission led her to put AWA
in her will in the late 1990’s.
“Building a lasting
legacy is what I want to do.” As
she explains the motivating factors
in her life that inspired her to talk
with her attorney, close friend and
executor about the bequest, she
mentions her wish for AWA’s facility to be improved. Fix the shelter,
add space to care for more dogs,
and expand the spay/neuter
clinic. “I know you can’t do these
things today because you are raising all your operating funds annually. I see my
legacy allowing you to do something special to continue helping
the animals and
people who come to you.”

imagine not giving back. I feel
good knowing that when I visit the
shelter and read about the work
AWA does I am going to be a part
of continuing to
contribute as much as I can.”
AWA has been very fortunate over
the past years to be the recipient
of thoughtful

Hi Everyone,
The first week of July, on a spur of the

seems to be quite happy here.
We might be coming in to get a friend
but then decided he was safe and when he knows when he wakes up
he will still be in his forever home.
Jake is pretty much housetrained and it's only been one week! I can't
thank you enough for such a wonderful pup. All Jake wants to do is
make me happy. He tries to be the perfect puppy which he definitely
is and more. Even though I was heartbroken twice in less than two
months, Jake has definitely helped me heal and love all over again. I
just wanted you to know that Jake is now HOME.
