Fall Yard Sale
Sign up at the Village Center for the Saturday,
October 22nd Fall Yard Sale. There is a small fee of
$5.00 that participants are required to pay. The fee is
used to defray the cost of maps, signage and

PRESENTS A FREE EVENT
The Sunflower Activities Committee is gearing up for our “season” of ticketed
events with free entertainment by Kids Unlimited on Saturday, October 22, 2016 at
6:30 p.m. in the Fiesta Room. Kids Unlimited is a program to help talented young
people learn to present music and dance in a professional style program. Their
program will include 12 to 20 performers ranging in age from 3 (yes, 3!) to 18 in
solo, duet, small and large group numbers and last about 45 minutes. The songs are
primarily upbeat and include Motown, classics, patriotic and modern. All the
performers will be in costume and have
experience in previous programs. While
the group is not charging a specific fee, a
basket will be available at the door as
attendees leave for any donations. Any
funds donated after the performance will
go towards scholarships for kids who excel
in song and dance, but whose families
cannot afford classes. See page 8 for more.

This deadline was arrived at to insure that all homeowners receive the publication in a timely manner.

MESSAGE FROM THE BOARD OF DIRECTORS

Next month is our annual meeting where new members of the board are sworn in and it provides an
opportunity for the community to express their appreciation to the departing members who have given
unselfishly of their time over the past two years. It is also the time when the board itself elects new officers
and makes plans for the upcoming year.
We are attempting to get a guest speaker from Northwest Fire to address the assemblage at the meeting. They
will be here to discuss emergency preparedness, their role in it and, most importantly, our role in providing for
ourselves in the event of a catastrophic event. Emergency preparedness is one of those topics that absolutely
no one thinks about until they no longer have a roof over their head or food to eat. Thanks to our very own
Dave Cobble, we stand much less of a chance of that happening that if we simply left things up to the local
emergency agencies.
So please make plans to attend the annual meeting and participate in our own version of the democratic
process. It is most fitting that this year it follows, by one day, the national election. The people who have
stepped up as candidates are making a large personal sacrifice of time and temperament so please take the time
to vote for the two of your choice and then to show your support by attending the annual meeting.
ANNUAL MEETING

The Annual Meeting of the Members (homeowners) is scheduled for Wednesday, November 9, 2016 at 1:00
pm. Once again, the Annual meeting will be held in the Fiesta Room. In order to achieve quorum and validate
election results 20% of all lots must return a ballot via postal mail and/or be present at the meeting. There are
967 lots within the Sunflower Community and 20% of the lots equals 193 lots that must be represented to
allow the meeting to go forward. If quorum is not met, a secondary meeting may have to be called with an
additional notice being mailed to all owners. I strongly encourage all owners to complete their ballots and
return them per the instructions. Ballots will be mailed out the first part of October with the official
notification of the meeting. This year you will be voting for two candidates and there are three well-qualified
homeowners running for these open slots. All homeowners in residence are invited to attend the meeting on
Wednesday, November 9, 2016. Remember, when you elect the Board, you are providing the Board with the
responsibility of making decisions on behalf of the community. I look forward to seeing you at the Annual
Meeting.

COMMITTEE REPORTS
ARCHITECURAL REVIEW COMMITTEE

It’s that time of year again! The semi-annual
community inspections will take place in the weeks
following October 15th. Again it would be appreciated
if you would remove weeds, dead plants, empty pots,
(any size statues, artifacts, figurines, etc.), artificial
plants & flowers. Your neighbors who make up the
ARC would rather have less violations and report
writing. Also, it costs staff time & money for
stationery and postage. Let’s keep our community
“Looking good”.
THE FINANCE COMMITTEE
By Finance Committee
You have all received a copy of the financial budget
for Sunflower for fiscal year 2017, which runs from
October 1, 2016 through September 30, 2017. By
now, you have read and fully understand those five
pages of numbers, right? This column will be a
digest version of the income accounts, with all
numbers rounded.
 The biggest income item is assessment fees
paid by the membership. Next year, this will
amount to $89.00 per month or $533.00 semiannually, or $1,066 annually, per member, for
a total of $1,030,800.

The next largest item of income will come as
a surprise to most of you – advertising in the
Sun Catcher. Next year, we are estimating
income of $41,000. Please support our
advertisers.

All other income items, 16 various accounts,
equal $23,000.

The total gross income is $1,145,000. We
will transfer $185,000 to the reserve account.

This leaves us with a net operating income of
$910,000 for fiscal 2017.

Sunflower is in a strong financial condition.
Be sure to use this as a sales tool when listing
your home.

Two positions are open on the Activities Committee,
which include attending quarterly meetings, helping
sell and take tickets for events, and spreading the
word about upcoming programs. If you have any

SUNFLOWER MURDER MYSTERY THEATER

Here are some tips to help you have a successful sale.
Sunflower's next Murder Mystery, "A Talent for
Murder" is scheduled for Thursday, March 23rd
and Saturday, March 25th of 2017.
Yard sales are all about bargains so set realistic
prices. Assign simple prices to your goods: 50 cents,
3 for $1, $5, etc.
Those interested in participating as cast or crew
should plan to attend an organizational meeting on
Friday, January 6th from 1:00 p.m.-3:00 p.m. in
the Fiesta room. There are no lines to learn and
each cast member will have considerable input as
their character is developed. To add to the fun, there
will be several new twists in the next murder mystery.
Create an organized display. Lay out your items by
category and display items to appeal to your
customers.
Crew responsibilities include developing advertising
materials, taking pictures, helping with costumes,
sending out communications, developing sets,
monitoring the sound system, designing programs,
etc. Please consider coming to the organizational
meeting if you have any interest in participating. No
experience needed. The only qualification is that
you are part ham and will come to both shows in
March and the Friday afternoon rehearsals that are
scheduled roughly twice each month January-March.

BAKE SALE VOLUNTEERS NEEDED !!!

Summer has flown by and it 's time to start looking
through your baking recipes for the Fitness Club
Bake Sale, November 4th and 5th, during the
Sunflower Fine Arts & Craft Fair. Donations of home
baked goodies are being sought along with volunteers
for packaging and sales. More details to follow in the
Sun Catcher and Communicator.
Stock up on bags and newspapers. People who buy
many small items will appreciate a bag to carry their
items. Newspapers are handy for wrapping fragile
items.
Manage your money. Make a trip to the bank to get
ample change for your cashbox.
Advertise - This is a large community so use
balloons and signs with prominent arrows, etc. to
grab the attention of people driving by.
“Old Pueblo” is a Tucson organization that provides
rehabilitation to Armed Services veterans. The
Sunflower Veterans will be working with the Old
Pueblo staff to collect unsold items from our
Sunflower Garage. To donate leave at end of
driveway labeled Veterans.

SMOKE DETECTOR TIME

Friday, November 4th is the date scheduled to have
your smoke detectors or its batteries replaced if
service is due. Your Sunflower neighbors who are
sponsored by Northwest Fire provide this twice
yearly service for those residents who are unable to
maintain their smoke detectors themselves.
Therefore, if your batteries haven’t been replaced in
the last four years or if you wish to replace all your
smoke detectors, please stop at the front desk to
complete a request to change the batteries (which are
provided by the resident) or to obtain information on
purchasing new detectors.
Purchasing identical
smoke detectors is required as team members cannot
do new wiring. (The two types of detectors used in
our homes are also at the front desk in helping to
order new ones. New detectors come with batteries.)
Residents who have completed a request form will be
called prior to November 4th to finalize an
approximate time for service – either morning or
afternoon. Teams will do their best to honor the
requested replacement time.
Unused prescription drugs thrown in the trash can be
retrieved and abused or illegally sold. Unused drugs that
are flushed contaminate the water supply. Proper disposal
of unused drugs saves lives and protects the environment.
Together we can achieve preventive measures and
solutions for making our community safe and healthy.

AGE VERIFICATION

Attention Lots 242-483
Age Verification - Sunflower Community is an agerestricted community and in order to maintain the
standards imposed by HUD through HOPA (the
Housing for Older Persons Act) a survey and letter
must go out every two years to the homeowners.
Owners are required to complete and turn in an
updated age verification affidavit. In order to do this
process efficiently, the letters go out quarterly. Lots
242-483 will receive their letters in October. At least
80% of the community must have one person per lot
over the age of 55, this means that we need a
minimum of 80% of the homes to comply. Please
bring your affidavit to the Village Center to complete
as the affidavit must be signed and witnessed by a
member of staff. Please do NOT drop off the
affidavit.
In providing this service, additional ladder climbers
would be helpful. If interested, please give me a call
at 572-0587.
DISPOSE-A-MED
Thank you for your participation and cooperation.
The Marana Police Department, in partnership with the
Marana Health Center; Marana Optimist Club, Marana
Mortuary and Pima County Wastewater, encourages
Marana citizens, businesses and schools to join us in
sharing information about drug awareness and preventive
measures. The Marana Police Department will be hosting
Dispose-A-Med every other month on the second
Saturday. The next dates are October 8th and
December 10th.

Thanks to Linda Weyer for another outstanding Art
Show. Your Indian paintings are so well done. Your
Arizona scenery definitely invites one to visit here
and perhaps even move to here—our beauty is
different than many parts of the United States.
We want to thank you for doing the September show
and we are looking forward to your October one.
The Quilting club will be presenting a show in
November.
We have applicants for the 2017 year but before
contacting artists with dates for the show we want to
be sure that the dates we give them are accurate. We
may be in the midst of our revitalization project and
wouldn’t want you to hang your works in an area that
could be a little dusty. Stay tuned for further details.
BINGO

We survived our hot and humid summer and now we
can enjoy lovely cool evenings. It is a good time to
come to the Village Center and enjoy a game of
Bingo. This month’s game is Tuesday, October
11th. When more people attend, we have larger
prizes. Of course, it isn’t just about winning.
Participating in the game also gives you the
opportunity to enjoy conversations and have a few
laughs with friends.

OCTOBER LADIES LUNCHEON

The October Ladies Luncheon will be at Oregano’s,
located at 100 W Orange Grove Rd on Wednesday,
October 12th. Please note that we will be sitting
outside on the shaded patio with misters running
as needed. The social hour begins at 11:30 a.m. with
a cash bar available. Lunch will be served at noon.
There is a choice of five luncheon items. The price is
$18, this includes the meal, non-alcoholic beverage,
tax, gratuity and DESSERT of a mini “pizza” cookie
with vanilla ice cream. (You will likely have a take
home box as the lunch portions as HUGE!) Please
bring exact change when you come to the Center to
purchase your ticket. Ticket sales will close on
Thursday, October 6th. Looking forward to seeing

BACCHUS WINE

El Charro Café at Oracle and Magee
was the destination for Sunflower
oenophiles this month. We tasted four
delicious Mexican food offerings—
paired with wine, of course. If you’re under the
mistaken impression that Mexican food only goes
with margaritas or beer, trying the right kind of wine
with your quesadilla just might disabuse you of that
notion. It’ll chimi your changas! At least, that was
the consensus of the Bacchus folks who were
fortunate enough to get on The List to attend this
terrific limited tasting. . . .
You could be on that list for advance information
about upcoming Bacchus events. Just give your

We
usually meet on the fourth Wednesday of the month,
and though meetings are most often held at the
Sunflower Village Center, occasionally we go to a
different venue. There are no dues; all that’s required
is an interest in wine and learning more about it, a
sense of adventure, and a desire to enjoy conversation
and laughter with your Sunflower neighbors while
you eat great food and drink lovely wine. What’s not

We plan on having it outdoors, weather permitting.

ROMEO’s have not been to as a group previously, on
Wednesday. October 12th, lunch will be at
‘SMASHBURGER’ at 7625 N. Oracle, near Sprouts.
Yes, they have beer. Their SMASHBURGERS
(100% Certified Angus Beef) and
SMASHCHICKENS are fresh, never frozen. The
malts and shakes feature Haagen-Dazs ice cream.

salesman. While John was out calling on current and potential

call around and have John call home. After calling ten
businesses asking if John Sexhauer was there with no success,

Your coffee hosts for the first week in October are
Irene & Gene Wittmann. Irene and Gene have been
hosts many times and they are wonderful volunteers.
Gene was a member of our Board of Directors and
Irene has been one of the dedicated members of the
Sunflower Culinary Committee and a long term
volunteer at Northwest Hospital.
Tuesday, November 8th is our date for the next
Sunflower Ladies Lunch. It will be held at the
Gringo Grill, located in the La Posada Lodge at 5900
N. Oracle.
We have volunteers for the month of October. We
will make every effort to continue Saturday morning
coffees.
Saturday morning is a relaxing event. If you have
never attended, please stop by at 8:00 a.m. The
coffee is always hot and we also have tea. In addition
we supply jelly, cream cheese and butter for your
bagels. There is a small charge to cover the cost of
refreshments.
We are always looking for people to volunteer to host
this event.

There are no dues and all ‘Men Of Sunflower’ are
invited to join us for breakfast and/or lunch. So we
may give the restaurant the count to prearrange our
space, please sign up at the Village Center before
noon of the Monday prior to the breakfast. This
month it will be on Tuesday, October 25th. We’ll
carpool from the Village at 8:25 a.m. If you are not
carpooling, let us know so we don’t wait and worry
about you.
There is a choice of four entrees with a non alcoholic
beverage, tax and gratuity included for $18.00. The
menu and signup sheet are at the center. Exact
change is appreciated. Lunch will be served at noon;
happy hour will begin at 11:30 a.m. Alcoholic

The men’s Nine Hole Golf Group welcomes our
Sunflower Community to fun golf. We hope you will
challenge yourself to the game and enjoy playing the
beautiful golf course that is your neighbor “The
Quarry Pines” located just 10 minutes from
Sunflower.
Yes, we all want to play the game well, however we
are a fun group and that’s what we feel golf is about.
So, take a couple of hours out of your busy schedule
on Wednesdays and join us! Should you have family
or friends in town, put their names on the sign-up
sheet and they are welcome to play.
The sign-up book is on the table near to the fitness
center. The number of people signed up will be
called into the Pines by noon Tuesday for the golf
cart reservations.
Spring-summer we play the back nine 7:30 a.m.
Fall-winter the front nine is played at 2:00 p.m.

FUN POKER

For those of you who have not had the pleasure of
joining us for an afternoon of fun poker, we play
every Tuesday and Friday from 12:00 p.m. to 3:00
p.m. in the Library.
The Old West may have had their legends with Wild
Bill Hickok, Doc Holliday, Wyatt Earp and others but
we too have our legends and enjoy the camaraderie of
being together.
Fun Poker is just what it says it is….fun. We play a
lot of “unusual” card games; however, we play Texas
Hold’em and Omaha also. If you know how to play
poker and would like to learn some of the crazy
games that we play, come on up and join us for an
afternoon….we’ll explain each game to you as we
play it.

LADIES 9 HOLE GOLF

Come and play with the Desert Ladies Nine Hole
Golf Group for a fun round of golf on Tuesdays at the
beautiful Quarry Pines Golf course just 10 minutes
away. The goal is to have fun no matter what your
skill level is while improving your game. A sign-up
sheet can be found in the Activities Notebook in the
Village Center located on the desk by the fitness
room. Please sign up before the Monday of each
week that you wish to play. If friends or family are
visiting, they are welcome to play with us. Add their
names to the sheet when you sign up.
Ah! It’s September and the Bocce Club is at it again.
Some hot shootouts taking place on the courts
already. The weather is cooling down and there is fun
to be had playing the good ole bocce game. We have
been averaging 10 players in this new season. A
number that will surely take a big jump when our
snowbirds return. We have had a couple of new
players stop by to roll a few with us. Terrific! We are
always glad to see fresh faces out there.
In case you didn’t know, Sunflower has been the
home for the Tucson Senior Olympic Bocce

last week of January. Teams from all over the area
come to participate and they always comment on
what great facilities we have. There are Ladies,
Men’s and Co-ed divisions.
We are a fun loving, welcoming group and would

Fall is on its way and the snowbirds are heading
south, so come on out and enjoy some tennis! We
have a wonderful group of people who love the sport
and we welcome players at all skill levels. If your
skills are a bit rusty, you are encouraged to come out
for informal play, which is a fun time. If you prefer a
more serious game, then the scheduled doubles would
be what you want, since we play regular sets. We still
laugh and have fun, but are just a bit more
competitive.

Just about anywhere you go, you can find Pickleball
being played and enjoyed by active seniors. One
advantage of playing Pickleball is that it can be
played with a diverse age group and skill level on the
same court, making pickleball a great family game
time. Pickleball is easy to learn, good for your health,
and is a lot of fun to play!
Now that the evening weather is cooling down, we
will resume to the evening 6:30 p.m. start time. Also,
we are glad to seeing many of our club “snow birds “
returning to the courts.
Morning play is on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday,
Friday and Saturday at 7:00 a.m.
The morning
players are mostly advance to tournament level
players. However, morning play can be arranged for
beginners by calling me, Danielle Lardy at 250-0312
or Carolyn Hutt at 419-6369 to schedule play time or
lesson time.
Evening play is on Tuesday, Thursday, and Sunday at
6:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Evening play is for ALL level

Sunflower doubles is informal play with 4 players
rotating positions on court after each game, with
server moving to the bench after 4 games. A player
waiting to come in takes the court at the beginning

players, more than one court may be in use with all
courts participating in the rotation.

The Sunflower Art Club will begin meeting on
Wednesday, November 2nd, Craft Room, 9:00 a.m.
until noon. You can come and go any time you
want. There is no instructor. We are a group of
artists who enjoy painting together and helping each
other. Bring whatever medium you prefer. The
members range from beginning to experienced
artists.

So far this year, the most improved bowlers are Carol

improvement. This is based on bowlers with 36
games or more this year.

their Summers away.

SUNFLOWER NEEDLEWORKERS

We meet every Monday afternoon from 1:00 p.m.3:00 p.m. and Wednesday mornings from 9:00 a.m.11:00 a.m. in the Sunflower Village Center. We meet
from October through May, but if there are enough
members who want to keep meeting during the
summer, we will.
Membership is available to Sunflower Community
Association members in good standing. Annual dues
are $5.00 if residents are not a member of the Arts
and Crafts group. If a member of the Arts and Crafts
group, there is no further monetary requirement.
CRAFT CLUB

STORYTELLING:
How to Write an Inspiring Memoir, Oral History, or
Family Genealogy

If you look at what you inherited, what was the
biggest treasure? Can it be that the stories from your
family and the photos have meant the most? And if
you did not inherit those stories, would that be the
treasure? Don't deprive your children, grandchildren
and future descendants. I want to help you document
your life story, your memories of your parents and
grandparents, and what you know of the family
history. If you don't like to write, I'll show you work
arounds. The important thing is to get the stories
saved and have fun doing it.
This is a no-fee workshop where I offer you
individual help. The workshop is open to all. There is
no catching up or problem if you miss a month here
and there. The next workshop is Thursday, Oct 20, 2
p.m. Please note this is our new starting time from
previous workshops. See you then.

SUNFLOWER GENEALOGY SOCIETY

A VERY DIFFERENT kind of get together. The
October meeting is going to be a focus group
meeting. We want all our members to attend, please.
The focus is going to be about the kinds of meetings
you want going forward. We will be considering
meeting formats, presentations, programs, and field
trips we want to include in 2017. We are betting that
by having this be an inclusive and interactive
discussion, the ideas will abound. This is your club so
we want your input. And we invite anyone who has
thought about joining the club to attend and bring
forth what you would hope the club would be for you.
Depending on the length of the discussion, if there is
time, we will be breaking up into smaller groups to
address each person’s research progress so bring your
research, questions and devices if you want.
Honoring the ancestors who give us our story.
October’s meeting is Tuesday, October 18th at 2:00
p.m. We welcome all Sunflower residents.
SUNFLOWER FITNESS CLUB

This month we will continue our summer schedule
with volunteers, Dorothy and Margo, who will lead
the Tuesday and Thursday classes. The water
aerobics class with our certified instructor, Robin,

This class combines low impact dance exercises,
pilates, and yoga moves using videos.

This class builds and tones muscles and increases
flexibility. You will need to bring a ball, an exercise
band, and a set of small weights.
Water Aerobics with Robin: 9:00 a.m. - 10:00 a. m.
Mon/Weds/Fri
This class strengthens and tones muscles through
water resistance exercises.
Every participant needs to be a member. Card
punches are only required for water aerobics. This
class can still be tried twice for free.
Membership cards ($15) and punch cards ($22) are

The Photo Club’s next meeting will be Tuesday,
October 11th at 10:00 a.m. in the Craft Room of the
Village Center. Our ‘show and tell’ for the meeting
will be recent photos from your trips this summer. If
any time remains (and there always is) mini-slide
shows of other trips or outings is always appreciated.
We will use the overhead TV in the Craft Room, so
bring those slide shows on a flash drive.
As always, bring a beverage of your choice to wash
down the cookies that always seem to materialize.
SINGLES AND FRIENDS

Viva Mexico. During this beautiful time of the year,
the Singles and Friends are going to take a journey of
exploration into the Mexican customs and heritage of
Tucson. During this journey, we are going to have a
guide who will explain certain customs and we will
also be paying homage to some of our past members.
To further enhance this adventure, come dressed in a
south of the border costume. Prizes will be awarded.
The meal for the evening will be catered by a local
Mexican restaurant. This adventure will take place
on October 15th in the Fiesta Room starting at 5:30
p.m. and the journey will begin at 6:00 p.m.
You ask, when will you pay your fare and how much
is it going to be. You can purchase your tickets the
first week of October for only $12.00 on Monday – 3,
Wednesday – 5, and Friday – 7 at the Village Center
between 10:00 a.m. and 12:00 p.m.

SUNBIRD CAMPERS/RV CLUB

Autumn is a fun time of the year when much of the
world turns from green to radiant shades of yellow,
gold, and red. Temperatures begin to cool down, and
even begin to give crispness to the air in the morning.
The privilege of living here is that we have the fall
colors readily available within a short drive. If you
enjoy the outdoors we have the capability of camping
right in the middle of all this beauty. The Sunbird
Campers/RV Club welcomes you to come join us at
our monthly meeting on the first Friday of the month.
You do not have to have a tent, a trailer, a camper, or
an RV; just have the interest in getting out on the
road less traveled. Our Friday, October 7th meeting
will be at 10:30 a.m., in the Fiesta Room of the
Village Center. You are invited to meet with us and
learn more about the club.
All members please note and mark your calendars for
the "Advanced Elder Care" presentation by Pam
Liddil, on Monday, October 24th, at the Village
Center, 10:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. Remember, there

SUNFLOWER READERS' CLUB

new projects for the coming season. In October a
class for a Dresden table topper is scheduled and one
craft fair item class. Then we have charity quilting
days, and don't forget the Halloween party. We do

SUNFLOWER TECHNOLOGY CLUB

October will be the final installment of our formal
cutting the cord presentation and I’m not
exaggerating when I tell you it’s truly a look into the
future of home entertainment. Imagine a time where
any channel you want is instantly available, any
movie there for the asking, archived shows and
movies for the last half century and TV/movies from
any country in the world! And you and you alone,
are in control of the whole process.
It’s not a fantasy, it exists today in its very
rudimentary form and there are actually club
members who are dabbling in this exciting vision of
the future of entertainment. It’s all because of a
technology known as IPTV – Internet Protocol TV.
Oddly enough, it’s a protocol developed by the very
industries who are now claiming it will rob them of
revenues and cost them viewers.
If you remember Napster and its impact on the music
industries (ultimately it saved the industry rather than
destroying it as had been predicted) then just imagine
a Napster of TV & movies. No longer will we be
required to buy 100 channels to get 10 we want.
And, we will be able to watch those 10 on our
schedules without expensive DVR equipment –
actually, without much equipment at all – laptop and
TV. So be ready, be there and prepare to be amazed!

SUNFLOWER TRAVEL CLUB

The sales desk will reopen on October 5th from 1:00
p.m. – 3:00 p.m. Our membership drive starts for the
2016-17 season, as well as signups for the three trips
that we have planned so far. The dues this season is
$5. Our sales desk will also be open on October 19th
from 1:00 p.m. – 3:00 p.m.
November 18th: A trip to the Mesa Swap Meet. We
will leave the center at 9:00 a.m. arriving at
approximately 11:00 a.m. Lunch will be on your own
at the food court. We’ll leave at 3:30 for an early
dinner at Sweet Tomatoes. We plan on being back
between 6:00 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. The cost of $40 pp
includes transportation, driver gratuity and meal at
Sweet Tomatoes.

December 16th: “Home for the Holidays” Christmas
show with lunch at the Arizona Opry in Apache
Junction. Experience a joyful mixture of traditional
and popular seasonal classics. Bus loads at 10:00
a.m. and we should be back around 6:00 p.m. $65
per person.
March 12th: Cirque Musica at Tucson Music Hall.
Cirque Musica combines the Tucson Symphony
Orchestra’s music with the spell-binding grace and
dare-devil athleticism of today’s greatest circus
performers. $68 per person includes first floor
seating, bus transportation with drop off and pick up
at Music Hall doors and driver gratuity. Bus leaves
center at 1:00 p.m. and returns by 5:00 p.m.

SUNFLOWER VETERANS CLUB

related to the Pima Air Museum and its aircraft.
Veterans Club “Cook Out”
We are very proud of the support Sunflower
Residents give to our charity projects! Saturday’s
meal was attended by 150 Sunflower residents and
guests and was a huge success. We seem to get better
with practice. Many thanks to the volunteers who did
the work and our customers who good naturedly
ignored any glitches in our service.
This profit was earmarked for additional benches for
the Committal Shelter in the new Marana Veterans’
Cemetery joining the benches purchased by our
February Cook out. The manager of the cemetery and
a representative of their charity foundation were at
the Cook Out and were impressed with your
enthusiasm and support. Thank you.
A reminder if you have changed your email address,

so we can make sure you still get the veteran’s club

VINTAGE GARDENERS

start welcoming back our winter visitors/residents and

needed to step up and volunteer to help keep this

Sunflower Neighbors is a group of volunteers living
in Sunflower who donate time, transportation, and
understanding to those in need. We provide rides
exclusively to doctor, dentist or other necessary
medical appointments when you are unable to drive
yourself. There is no charge for this service, but
donations are accepted. Please allow 4 days notice to
locate an available volunteer and do let us know if
you have special needs (wheelchair, etc.) so that we

PARKINSON’S SUPPORT GROUP
The Parkinson’s Support Group meets at 10:30 a.m.
the 4th Tuesday of every month at the Village Center.

BREAST CANCER SURVIVOR GROUP

Survivors here at Sunflower. Whether you are newly
diagnosed, currently in treatment, or are a long time
survivor, we will welcome you.
We have been meeting for 11 years. We share our
fears, joys, sorrows, and triumphs. This group has
been here for each other and we support each other in
any way we can. We meet in the privacy of our
homes and have also been known to go out to lunch
and have some fun.

GROWING STRONGER

Tuft University research shows that a program of
strength training not only improved bone density, but
also reduced falls and improved arthritis symptoms.
Balance, coordination, flexibility and endurance are
also improved. This program is based on that
research and instructors must be certified.
This low impact program is appropriate for both
sedentary and active people. Hand weights and ankle
weights are required 1 to 2 pounds for women or 2 to
3 pounds for men.
This six week program will be on Tuesdays and
Thursdays from 10:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. starting
Tuesday, October 4th. There is no fee. If you have

If your pet is barking, bring it inside so it
doesn’t disturb the neighbors
Pick up after your pet. If you take your pet
for a walk bring several baggies so you can
pick up the feces. Yes, it is gross and yes, you
have to do it. One bag may not be enough.
Also remember to clean your yard of feces
weekly so the smell does not spread from your
yard.
When your dog is not in an enclosed area,
remember to keep your pet on a leash.
Arizona State Statues requires that dogs be
leashed when in public parks and school, but
the county laws and city laws are generally
more restrictive, but vary from place to place.
Become familiar with the leash laws in your
area.
Neighboring a Dog or other Pet

If your neighbor’s dog is barking, KINDLY
contact the neighbor to let them know of the
problem. They may not be home to be aware
of the problem. Remember the old saying
about catching more flies with honey than
vinegar. Pounding on someone’s door and
yelling obscenities is not likely to help the
situation and will only cause the dog to bark
more.
CONTACTING COMMITTEE MEMBERS
All committee members are volunteers. The Front
Desk Staff cannot give out names or phone numbers
to persons who want to contact a committee member.
The procedure is to go to the respective meeting
(PRAC, ARC, etc.) to address a question, solution or
suggestion. Please do not call them at home for a
concern that should be addressed at a meeting.
*Let the front desk know if you plan to change
your schedule: Anticipate holiday changes, additions
and cancellations so we can try to work with you.
*Check for room availability BEFORE scheduling
a meeting or event: This simple requirement refers
to all groups and committees: check with the front
desk before making your meeting plans.
CALLING ALL COMMITTEES AND CLUBS

*Size is a consideration: If your group is small, you
may be scheduled for a smaller space or you may be
asked to share a space to accommodate a larger
group.
Our snowbirds are starting to fly home and that
means that all of the clubs, committees and activities
will be resuming after their summer hiatus. The front
desk staff works hard to accommodate all meetings
and room reservation requests but we need your help
to make this process flow smoothly.
If we all work together, we can achieve a smooth
running Village Center schedule that benefits all
committees, clubs and events. If you have any
questions, contact the front desk staff.
During the summer, there were some reductions in
room availability but we were able to work around
them because fewer groups were meeting. Now that
the clubs and committees are back, we find that
almost all groups want to reserve either 9:00 a.m. or
1:00 p.m. for their starting time. This creates an
almost impossible situation for scheduling and trying
to keep everybody happy.
How can you help? Here are a few simple suggestions
so everyone will benefit:
*Put your requests in writing: Please don’t expect
that we know when your group will resume in the
fall. Let the front desk know in writing what dates
and times you would like and we’ll try to fit your
request into the schedule.
*Be flexible. If you are accustomed to meeting in a
particular room at a set time, don’t be upset if you are
moved to another location or if you are asked to
shorten your time in the location if we have to
accommodate a busy schedule.
*Consider evening, Sunday or late afternoon
meetings: there are some evenings and weekend
times when the Village Center is empty – these would
be perfect times for your group to meet.
DO YOU HAVE A GIFT OR SKILL?

Are you aware of what a great chorale group we have
or have you seen our talented line dancers? We also
have artists, basket weavers, quilters and card players.
What they all have in common is residents offering
their time to organize and teach. Do you have a skill
you would like to share with other residents? Can
you teach a group; guitar, keyboard, harmonica,
writing, stain glass, dog obedience classes, or _____?
If there is interest, they WILL COME. A group of 5
or 6 is enough to get something started. Put your
talents to use. It will be appreciated by those
interested. We only ask that you volunteer and we
will help getting the word out.
I attended a senior event that Marana put on and they
had dog dancers as entertainment.
It was so
enjoyable. Several people got together and taught
their dogs how to dance to music and they put on
shows. We have all seen the Senior Tappers and
others. So again if you have a skill you are willing to
share with others, please come and talk to the front
desk ladies. We are looking for afternoon activities
around 4:00 p.m. but we can check our room
reservation book for other available times.
