STEP INSIDE
the door of this rural
bungalow nestling in the
Essex countryside and discover the twilight world of the
governments cold war.
DEVOLVED CENTRAL
GOVERNMENT
THE CANTEEN
The civilian
operation room
where ministers,
possibly
including The
Prime Minister,
would be based.
SCIENTISTS’
CENTRE
Behind the vast blast screens that protect this bungalow is
the entrance to an amazing labyrinth of rooms built into a
hillside, encased in 10 foot thick reinforced concrete and
100 feet underground.
This is where devolved central government and military
commanders would have run the region had the UK been
attacked and nuclear war broken out.
One of five built to house up to 600
personnel on constant ‘hot bed shifts’.
Operating round the clock to
provide hot food.
Based just 20 miles from central
London, this building was one
of Britain's best kept secrets!
SICK BAY
Equipped
for
emergency
medical
treatment.
Experts would monitor nuclear
blast and predict fall out patterns.
BBC STUDIO
Built in great secrecy and under strict, military security the
local villagers and contractors alike knew nothing of what
was concealed in this hillside or how it would be used.
But you now have the chance to see the three phases of the
Bunker’s life. From its role with the RAF where the overall
tactical controller would react to a nuclear attack from
Britain's enemies, through to its role as Regional
Government HQ,
when there could
have been up to
600 personnel,
possibly
including the
Prime Minister,
organising the
survival of
the civilian
population in the
aftermath of the nuclear war.
THE DORMITORY
Why not bring your scout group or youth
group for an overnight stay and activities.
Paranormal and role play groups welcome.
This would have issued all emergency
broadcasts throughout the region.
ENTRANCE CORRIDOR
Designed to protect
the bunker from blast
but would also
facilitate the defence
of the bunker had
civilians tried to get
in.
Kids birthday parties.
PLANT ROOM
The life support
systems for all
the bunker, all
duplicated for
contingency
reasons.
Do an activity and then have a birthday meal
in the bunker cafe.
Film companies, why not use our extensive
locations inside and outside the bunker.
Corporate days and or conference facilities
available.
For schools. Why not combine an activity
with a day in our countryside class room
and learn all about the nature around us.
