CROSS CANADA HOVERCRAFT
Apr/Jun 2009
TRIP ON HOLD
I~
I
CROSS CANADA HOVERCRAFT EXPEDITION IS ON HOLD FOR A YEAR
Due to some unfortunate timing of spare part that were not shipped, the ambitious project of
Colin Steadman's is on hold. Colin plans a cross Canada trip in a hovercraft to raise money
for Prostrate Cancer. The following note was passed on to the Club from Colin.
"Well loading up the tanks for a cross country adventure have turned into loading up the
tanks for an adventure here in Alberta. Pacific (Supreme) Hovercraft have dropped the ball
and not shipped the necessary spare parts and my only window of opportunity this year is
June.
As a result, I have been forced to put my cross country trip off, probably until this time next
year. The up side is that I will be spending the month of June touring the Province and compiling a photos and thoughts for a book which I hope to have on the shelves for Christmas
(with proceeds going to the fight against Prostate Cancer).
I have a couple of local hovering types who will be joining me for a few days and I will be including them in the book as well. Maybe you can help me to make this a bit of promotion for
hovering in Alberta & Canada). Greatly appreciated if you could forward me the contact info
for Club members in Alberta and I can see if they'd like to join me for a day or 2 as I pass
through their areas.
It would be great to see lots of different faces in the book with a variety of hovercraft. Let me
know what you can do.
Any coverage you can give me in the Club newsletter would also go a long way to help. And
actually, maybe this is good time to put the word out that I'm recruiting for people to help in
next years cross country adventure and anyone interested in being a part of the adventure
can contact me at [email protected]".

The smaller VANGUARD 14 model is powered
by a 28HP fuel injected engine.
Fuel injection is an important feature for hovercraft in that it does not allow water to be ingested into
a carburetor. This is particularly helpful in salt-water
use as salt water will ruin an engine in very short order. BRIGGS & STRATTON is one manufacturer
that produce very
fuel efficient engines using fuel
injection for 25 HP
model up to larger
liquid cooled models. These features
along with improved intake and
exhaust manifolds
have reduced the
newer engine noise
levels.

VARIABLE AND REVERSE PITCH PROPELLER HUB
1-
YES, yes, yes!!!! A most needed component
for hovercraft / airboat use is now available. US
HOVERCRAFT in Anchorage, Alaska has now
developed a hub that will adapt to multi-wing fan
blades for small diameters and for lift applications.
See below.
They also have a hub that will take other larger
manufactured blades used for thrust. See photo to
left.
Imagine the possibilities using variable lift and
thrust fans/propellers. Engine can stay at same
RPM and adjust pitch for neutral, forward or reverse. WOW! For info contact
http://www.ushovercraft.comlnews/
"The variable pitch multiwing hub comes complete with blades and the base model is 5
blades at $2400 USD. Each additional blade is $350 USD up to 16 blades. Diameter is cut to
length requested", says Chuck of US Hovercraft.

As president and newsletter editor over the past few years, it has been a privilege,
and real education from the many contacts we have made. My own homebuilt craft
has been on hold for over 2 years, so I would like some time back to invest in it. As a
club we are really spread out across the country and so it is hard to have events. As
other priorities in life step in, I would like to step out from these two positions. Any volunteers or suggestionswould be grateful.

FORWARD I REVERSE AIR DUCTS
http://terryfallis.com/
category /hovercraft/
Terry says, quoting ftom his website, "Anyway, I like to think that Baddeck 1 is a rather
innovativehovercraft design. It came to me and I sketched it out while in fIrst year engineering, when I no doubt should have been taking notes in an Applied Math lecture. Not to get
too technical about it, but moving to a single engine design and venting the thrust through the
side thrust ports (see below), yields real dividends in weight, height, safety, noise, and control
(in my humble opinion). Perhaps one day I'll take a stab at building it, although I do push
back the ftontiers of ineptitude whenever tools of any kind are involved".
This is another method of applying air thrust for turning, forward or reverse using one fan
only. This has been use very successfully on model hovercraft.
REMEMBER- Keep it simple stupid is a good rule to use in buildinga hovercraft. Inevitablyevery builderworkingfrom a set of plans, wants to make some modification.
Whether they do not like the plans, or just want to have their own unique craft, the result often leads to more weight. Plans have been proven, so be sure that the modifications will not
affect safety and performance. Fasteners need to be wisely chosen for strength, vibration,
corrosion etc in a hovercraft environment.

Hello Ross,
Pleasu,re speaking with you a couple of weeks ago. I'm getting close to launch date and am still a few
dollars short in 2 areas; food & fuel.
I was wondering if the Club could send out an email to all the members asking for a donation. If they
could send a donation in the form of a food or fuel card (national supplier) that would be great and would go
along way to making "Hovering Across Canada" a big success.
They can send it to:
