BRAZIL MOURNS DEATH OF CASSIA ELLER
Marco Antonio Barbosa
Cassia Eller
Photograph by Milton Montenegro
Cassia Eller, pop/MPB singer who was enjoying enormous success
over the last decade, died December 29th in Rio, at age 39.
Physicians and relatives disagree on what would be the cause of
death, most probably related to drugs, alcohol and the stress caused
by over 100 shows during her last CD's promotional tour.
After her appearance in Rock in Rio. she recorded Acustico MTV,
which had sold in excess of 400,000 copies before her death.
Cassia has left an 8-year-old son. Chicao.

Daughter of an army officer, Cassia
was born in Rio de Janeiro, but grew
up in different cities due to her
father's assignments. She chose to
be a singcr at age 14, when someone
gave her a guitar. Later on. in
Brasilia (State Capital), she would
sing with choirs and trios eletricos
(trucks specially remodeled to
accommodate a live band. created in
Bahia. in the 70s. for Carnival
purposes). and trained classical
singing, In 1989 she headed to Sao
Paulo, passing around a demo tape
of the song "Por Enquanro". by
Renato Russo. She signed to
Polygram and released her first LP.
"Cassia Eller". in 1990. Besides
"Por Enquanto", the album featured
"Eleanor Rigby". (Beatles), and "0
Dedo de Deus". (Arrigo Barnabe
and Mario Manga). Eller played a
series of shows with Argentinean
guitarist Victor Biglione, presenting
a blues repertoire that would spread
her name as a blues and rock
vocalist. The second album, "0
Marginal", came two years later,
consolidating her voice's deep, low
timbre on the market. Among the
tracks, two Jimi lIendrix songs ("If
Six Was Nine" and "Hear My Train
A C omin ' ") and compositions by
ltarnar Assuncao, Luiz Melodia and
others. In 1994, the album "Cassia
Eller" combined Brazilian rock
classics with versions of samba
(Ataulfo
Alves)
and
popular
Brazilian music (Djavan). lIer next
CD,
"Veneno
AntiMonotonia"
(1997). was dedicated to the work of
Cazuza. and followed by "Com

Hi all' Just wanted to let
everyone know of 2 terrific sites
for IL research. some may
aIready know of these, but for
others. this may be completely
new information:
Pape Funeral Home
http://www.papefuneral.com
This site has TONS of death
info for folks who died or are
buried in Vermilion County, IL,
especially the town of Danville.
I found info on my
IIUPP/HUBB line here.
IL State Archives
http://www.sos.state.il.us/de
partmentsjarch ivesjarch ives.
html
Follow the link for
"Genealogical Research" and
from there follow the link for
"Databases" at the top of the
page (underneath the picture of
the man's face) to see all the
databases they have online'
TONS of info: military records,
marriage records. death records,
land records, servitude and
emancipation records, and tons
of IRAD holdings. I just
recently found tons of
information on my COVENTRY
and I IUPP ancestors in IL as
well as WILDER, WORTHEY
and others. For death and
marriage (and maybe others),
they give certificate number as
well as names, dates, and
locations. Good luck!

I ley all' Just a note from your
list manager :0) I have noticed a
lot of census info on the lists
lately, which I'm very glad to
see, but some information is
missing, such at county,
township or page.
Just a tip for when you send
census info to the Iist, please
make sure you include a II
information. Some of you have
submitted census data without
this information. I'm in the
process of putting this data on
the website for the list (please
email if you do NOT want it on
the website), so for those who
didn't include it, I will be
sending you a private email to
ask you for the missing info. II'
you know you are one who
didn't include all the info, please
go ahead and send it to me now.

I guess I need to make this clear.
I will NOT automatically take
whatever is posted to the list
without permission. If you post
something to the list that I think
the web page would benefit
from, I WILL contact you
privately and ask for permission.
Basically, what I was trying to
get across in the original email
is that if you want me to go
ahead and put your census info
that you submitted on the web
page, you should email to let me
know the missing information,
but also, this is just good
practice to use genera Ily
speaking, not just for the list, but
for anything, also cite your full
sources. As for the census,
include AL L information from
the census in the, including the
state, county, town, and page.
Many posts lately have left me
to wonder what state or what
county the information is
coming from.
A question has been very valid
question has been raised about
whether this is against Rootsweb
policy. I will check into this, but
honestly 1 doubt it.
The 3 main reasons I think this:
I. I'm getting permission
from the sender
2. This is public domain
information
3. The information is
staying on Rootsweb,
as my web page is on
Rootsweb.
Genealogy Exchange
Like I said. I will contact them
to find out, and if it is against
policy, I will take that
information off (only about 5
files). I hope this answers any
questions my last post left and
I'm sorry for the confusing.

IIi 311. Just wanted to let you

So far I don't have any real new
information (permission is
pending for 3 couple of census

making the pages 3 little more
"user friendly" I think. hope :0)
I'm working on changing the
text 311 to bold, since I am losing
my vision gradually I know how
hard it can be to read the pages
with a background, but it's
downright boring to look at with
no background. Being disabled

people who view the page using

the

broken links to the message

the old message boards that I
maintained (there were 8 I think)
no longer exist and they are all
consolidated into one BIG board

the projects coming soon that I
am currently working on is
about free blacks in NC before

Documents from this project
(this is part of my masters

I Icllo everyone I :0) I wanted to
let everyone know I'm working
hard on updating the web pages
for these lists. The main page as
well as the main page for each
surname has been updated and
broken links fixed. I know the
message board links were all
broken and that is because
Rootsweh decided to do away
with them a fter their partnership
with ancestry.com and now they
are all on ancestry. I have
changed all those links and for
surnames were I know multiple
spellings and there are boards
for those spellings, I added them
to the boards
(KERN and 11UPP lists, this
applies to you!).
I am working on the rest of the
pages, mostly working on
tabulating all the census
information to make it easier to
read. and that should be done for
all the surnames by the end of
the week. Keep sending me your
census data to add to the pages!
I would love to have a complete
listing for each surname in every
state. Right now. a Il the surname
main pages have 2 links at the
top for census data. the first link
is just for the I 790 census for all
states
(COVENTRY listers. I'm still
putting on the info. it's not
complete yeti) and the second
link is to a II other census years.
This second link takes you to a
page listing all 52 states with a
link for each state that has
Genealogy Exchange
census data. At this point, there
are only a few states that have
links for every surname, about 2
or 3 states on average. KERN
listers, I'm in the process of
rearranging your census data
currently on my website to fit
this formation. right now it's all
on one page. but that will
change.
The other main change I'm
working on is making the pages
easier to read. This includes:
bold text to make it stand out
against the background. and in
some cases. bigger font size.
Also, you may notice on the
bulleted lists that there is a
period at the end of each line.
This has nothing to do with
grammar, but rather, as
suggested by a fellow lister, this
is done to make easier to read
for text to speech programs for
the visually impaired. If you
have any other suggestions for
making the site more "user
friendly", drop me a line'
Also, I am thinking of having an
"unidentified persons" page of
photos where people are trying
to find out who they are. I f you
have some that fit this category,
please send them to me (in.jpg
or.gif format) with as much info
as
possible that you know (like
where the picture was taken if
known, approximate year, etc.)
and we can try to find out who
all our photos are of. Once I'm
done with the rest of the work, I
plan to start working on that and
getting those photos up.
Last thing, like I said earlier.
someone questioned whether it
was aga inst policy of Rootsweb
to take information that had
been posted to the list and put it
on my web page. As I said I
would, I contacted Rootsweb
and they said there is absolutely
nothing wrong with doing this
so long as I get permission from
the original poster (which I do
anyway). Just want to put that
out for those who are curious.
Ok, now good luck in your
research and send me that info
you want on the web page' :0)

Hill Country Witch Accuses
Pastor of Harassment
By T.A. Badger, Associated Press
Web Posted: 08/04/2003 10:02 AM
BURNET - A self-proclaimed witch in the eastern Hill Country is accusing a Christian pastor of
leading a harassment campaign aimed at ruining her business and driving her out of the region.
Margie Allen, who practices the pagan
religion Wicca, also charges that the
Llano County sheriff's office refused to
respond to her complaints and that
Rev. Joann Jackson had organized an
aggressive effort to force her out of the
area.
The charges have attracted the
attention of the FBI, which says it will
investigate the claims by Allen, a
consignment shop owner, as a possible
civil rights case.
Maeven Eller leads a pagan circle Sunday in Burnet. Dozens of
Wiccans and other pagans turned out to support Margie Allen, a
self-proclaimed witch who is accusing a Christian pastor of leading
a harassment campaign aimed at ruining her business and driving
her out of the region.
Deborah Cannon/Austin American-Statesman
Allen says Jackson, her former landlord
in Kingsland, ended her lease because
of her faith, and that the pastor
persuaded another Kingsland property
owner to abruptly pullout of a lease
deal while Allen was moving in.
"They think I'm satanic," said Allen, a Wiccan for the past six years. "We're dealing with very
unintelligent people."
Allen later moved her Magick Garden shop to Burnet, about 20 miles away. But she says
relocating didn't end the harassment by people who would gather maliciously outside.
"They'd wait until I was full of customers and then one of them would come into the store and say,
'Weren't you run out of Kingsland because you're satanic,'" she said. "Needless to say, that's not
good for business."
She also says people would occasionally follow her from the store to her home and would feign
trying to run her off the road.
"It was intended to antagonize and to frighten," Allen said, "and it did."
Jackson, pastor of the Calvary Hill Church in Kingsland, denies that she's responsible for any
hostility directed at Allen.
"She's tracing in the wrong direction," she said after presiding over the Sunday service at her
church. "We've never had any cross words."
Allen's beliefs had nothing to do with her decision to end the lease, Jackson said. Rather, her
husband's death last fall prompted her to sell the building, so she wanted it empty.
On Sunday, however, the building in question had "For Lease" signs in its windows.
But Jackson insisted Allen's faith was not a factor in her decision as a landlord.
"I have no problem with her at all," she said, adding that Allen was a fine tenant for more than
three years. "She's entitled to believe whatever she wants to believe."
THE ELLER CHRONICLES
Volume XVII, Issue 3
Page 48
Wicca is an ancient, nature-worshipping religion that its practitioners also refer to as "witchcraft."
But they say many of the images associated with the word witch are misguided when applied to
her faith.
"It is not negative," said Allen. "It is not evil. It is not satanic."
Along with old clocks and dish sets, the Magick Garden _ in a converted ranch-style house near
downtown Burnet _ features incense sticks, crystals and herbs for healing, massage oils, and
potpourri cachets. Its inventory also includes a few Gideon Bibles, various Christian religious
tracts and a statuette of Our Lady of Guadalupe.
Her daughter Lindsay, also a Wiccan, tried without success to file a harassment complaint with
the Llano County sheriff's office.
A deputy visited while the store was still in Kingsland, Allen said, and boasted that another
Wiccan family had once lived in the county, "but we ran them out of town."
Llano County Sheriff Nathan Garrett said Sunday that he has had no contact with Allen, though it
was his understanding that Allen's religion may have had something to do with why she had
trouble finding a place to lease.
He said his recollection was that "one landlord of a different faith wanted her to move out," though
he said he knew little about the case.
Garrett said one of his deputies went to Allen's shop to talk to her, but that no complaint was
lodged.
On Sunday, dozens of Wiccans and other pagans turned out at the Magick Garden to support
Allen.
"Her rights are so obviously being trampled on:' said Maeven Eller, a Wiccan who heads Betwixt
& Between, a Dallas-based group that advocates religious toleration. "It feels like we're 100 years
in the past here."
Rene Salinas, a spokesman for the FBI in San Antonio, says because Wicca is a federally
recognized religion, the agency is launching a preliminary investigation of possible civil rights
violations.
If enough evidence emerges from the initial probe, a more in-depth investigation would follow,
Salinas said.

REPORT EIGHTH BIENNIAL
CONFERENCE JULY 9-13,
2003 FIELDSTONE
INN HIAWASSEE, GEORGIA
JULIA ELLER
The eighth biennial conference of the Eller Family Association was held at the Fieldstone
Inn in Hiawassee, Georgia July 9-13,2003. The town and inn are on the shores of Lake Chatuge,
on the Hiawassee River, in the picturesque southern Blue Ridge mountains. Many of the
attendees arrived on Wednesday and others on Thursday morning; and still others throughout the
duration of the conference. Wednesday was devoted to the renewing of friendships and
exchanging news with one another.
Thursday's activities began with the EFA Board meeting at 8:30. President Ed welcomed
those present and introduced new members Thomas and Anne Eller and daughter Julie from
Colorado Springs. Two board members, Bethel Eller Stolte and Hazel Eller James neither were
present due to health. Several reports were made. Ed stated that it is essential that we gain
membership in the EF A, and that the use of the Eller web site is the most important aspect of
disseminating information about Eller genealogy. Van Eller told about the enjoyable trip
and research work of those who make the trip to Salt Lake City in 2002. The group had a
luncheon buffet at the hotel. The guest speaker was Rudy Eller, sheriff of Towns County,
Georgia. Sheriff Eller welcomed us to Hiawassee and gave a few remarks about his personal
background. Following a buffet lunch the meeting resumed at I: 15. Several issues were
discussed. All of the John Jacob Eller books were sold except four. It was decided that we would
take pre-publication orders at $60 per book until we had a reasonable number sold for a reprint.
We have about fifty-five of the George Michael Eller books on hand and about fifty more at the
printer, which we have not purchased yet. After some discussion about the Eller Chronicles,
we concluded that we should all try to give Editor George Eller more news and information for
the publication.
The nominating committee, who are Ed Eller, Lynn Eller and Nancy Eller, presented the
following slate of officers and directors to serve for the next two years:
President:
Vice President:
Secretary-Treasurer:
Directors:
Paula Eller
Devon Dahl
Roger Eller
Eric Eller, Kent Eller, Van Eller, Gene Ellison and Sue Koenig
Following adjournment of the meeting, Devon gave an interesting talk and slide photos of
his visit to Ashe and Wilkes Counties, North Carolina, including the old farm place of Peter Eller
located on Roan Creek and New River. He also commented about the research work done last
year at Salt Lake City. Friday morning the group boarded a bus for a ride through the mountains
and down the Chattahoochee River valley to the quaint little village of Helen, Georgia.
Helen, with an old world architecture and cobblestone streets, presents a true Bavarian village of
little specialty shops. Oktoberfest is a big celebration there in the fall. We finished shopping and
looking, and once again on the bus, we headed to the town of Dillard for lunch at the Dillard
House. (/ don't know which was named after the other.) The Dillard House is a famous eatingTHE ELLER CHRONICLES

place, where food, and lots of it, is served family style. Like Hiawassee, Dillard is just a stone's
throw from the North Carolina border. After eating all that we possibly could, we walked over to
the cemetery at the Baptist Church where Susannah" Sukey" Eller was buried. Ed Eller and
Devon Dahl led a ceremony dedicating the new headstone at her grave. She was the daughter of
John Jacob Eller and Mary Biffle Eller, born in Sullivan County, North Carolina (now Sullivan
County, Tennessee) about 1787 and died in February 1864 at Dillard, Rabun County, Georgia. It
is believed that she was the first Eller to move to Georgia. Back in Hiawassee, we relegated the
evening to more fellowship and dining.
Saturday's activities began with the convening of the Board at 9: 15. President Paula
asked the Secretary (Roger) for the invocation and to call the roll of directors. All were present.
Old business subjects discussed and action taken
I.
Moved and approved that the Association hereby express appreciation
for services rendered to the EF A by the outgoing board members: Bethel Eller
Stolte and Hazel Eller James; and that certificated be sent to them;
2.
Moved and approved that we not take any action to purchase the remaining
fifty George Michael Eller books from the publisher, Closson Press, at the
present time unless Closson asks us to.
3.
The June 30,2003 financial report was presented by Roger. The cash balance
at June 30, 2003 was $10, 336 and liabilities for the conference yet to be paid.
Also included in the cash balance at June 30 was encumbered funds of $3,749
for publications and $1,800 other, mostly for conference expenses. The Board
moved and approved that the $1,800 be transferred to the general fund.
New business brought to the floor:
I .
The Board adopted the following mission statement: .. The Eller
Family Association exists to assist all Eller and associated family lines
worldwide to: Discover and preserve our historical past; report current events and
ongoing contributions; provide a permanent resource to receive and distribute
research discoveries; develop, and expand current family ties; and provide
ongoing biennial meetings to summarize accomplishments, socialize, and provide
inspired direction as we focus on the future."
2.
Paula emphasized that there is a lot of work to be done in the EF A, and that
it must be spread around to involve a lot of members. She named the
following committees, each to be chaired by a board member.
Committee Chaired by Research Sue Koenig Membership Kent Eller Web site
Eric Eller Fellowship - - - - - - Convention - - - - - - Also resolved, that Sue
involve Ed Holt and work closely with him on research work which he is
continuing presently. Also resolved, that Eric involve and work closely with Ben
Eller as his expertise in the establishment and continued work on the web site is
essential.
3.
Proposed budget for the years 2004 and 2005 was presented (copy
attached) which anticipates $5,000 income and expenses for 2004 and $7,000
income and expenses for 2005. The budget suggest an increase in dues from $15
to $25 annually, effective January I, 2004; and an increase in life membership
from $150 the $250, also effective January I, 2004. After some discussion
regarding finances and a change of fiscal year, it was mentioned that a change of
by-laws was necessary. Then, President Paula convened a meeting of the
membership and the following action was taken: Motion was made and seconded

that the by-laws be revised to delete the requirement of notification of members
of proposed change of the by-laws and add that the by-laws may be changed by a
majority vote of members in attendance. Motion passed. Motion was made and
seconded that the year of the Eller Family Association be changed from the
calendar year ending December 31 to one ending June 30, and that dues be
increased from $15 to $25 annually, and from $150 to $250 for life membership,
and that dues be prorated on a quarterly basis. Motion passed. Meeting of the
membership was adjourned. Those who brought their arts and crafts displayed
them on tables for the silent auction. Bidding was quite active initially and again
just before time expired at 3:00 o'clock. The auction brought in a total of $519.50
and tee shirt sales amounted to $469.
Everyone relaxed awhile until time to get dressed for photos outside and for the banquet
at 6:30. Following the buffet dinner, Lynn Eller, as chairman of the Awards Committee,
presented the following awards:
J W Hook Award to Edward K. Eller
EFA Award to Devon Dahl
President's Award to J. Gerald Eller (via telephone)
All were in suspense to see whose name would be drawn for the Eller family tree rug.
None other than Eric Eller's name was called. The events for the evening were concluded with
some old-fashioned hymn singing. The accompanist at the piano was Eller, wife of Glenn Eller,
who owns the Eller Tire Store in Hiawassee. She was fantastic on the keys and he was very good
singing bass. It was an enjoyable climax for everyone there. A total of 74 people attended all or
some part of the conference.
