SWEETBAY SUPERMARKETS HELP CHILDREN TAKE
STEPS TOWARDS INDEPENDENCE
The first awkward steps of a child require harmonious cooperation between the brain and the body's network of muscles. For
children with neuromuscular problems, mastering the complexities of walking can be a real obstacle to independence. This is when
the SweetBay Motion Analysis Center at St. Joseph's Children's Hospital of Tampa can help.
The center, sometimes called a gait lab, is one of just two in the state of Florida. The information gained during the evaluation can
help physicians determine the best treatment and if surgery is necessary. The technology used in the evaluation is like that used in the
motion picture industry. Infrared cameras track the movement of the child, and the data is converted to three-dimensional images
illustrating the actual gait, muscle strength and range of motion.
Through this sophisticated analysis, physicians may discover that the walking difficulties are simply compensation for another
condition. Treatment plans are tailored for each child and may include physical therapy, surgery, medication or bracing and adaptive
equipment.
T hrough their support, SweetBay helps children improve their ability
to walk, and dramatically improve their quality of life.
Children seen at the SweetBay Motion Analysis Center may be suffering from cerebral palsy, spina bifida, brain or spinal cord
injuries, congenital abnormalities, muscular dystrophy and a variety of movement disorders.
It was thanks to the generosity of SweetBay (then Kash ‘n Karry) that the center was established at St. Joseph's Children's Hospital of
Tampa, and their continued support that has enabled the purchase of additional equipment, including state-of-the-art infrared cameras.

KREWE'S EVENT STRIVES
TO UNCORK THE CURE
While the fine wine and fine art were popular with the over 250
people attending the recent 2nd Annual Uncork the Cure event, it was
the Children's Cancer Research Group (CCRG) at St. Joseph's Children's
Hospital that was the star of the show.
The "Zignature" event sponsored and produced by the Krewe of
Zingaro raised over $20,000 to support research of childhood cancers
being conducted at St. Joseph's Children's Hospital.
CCRG was born as a result of the efforts of a committed group of
parents of children stricken with cancer. Formed in 2003, the group is
dedicated to the prevention and cure of childhood cancer and raises
money to help fund research being done at St. Joseph's Children's
Hospital of Tampa. St. Joseph's is the only community hospital in Florida
and one of a very few non-university hospitals in the United States with
a research laboratory dedicated to pediatric cancer research.
The event was a great success thanks to the Krewe of Zingaro, a
non-profit service and social organization, CCRG volunteers, Fine Wine
and Spirits, PRP
Wines and Michael
Murphy Gallery.

Heart to Heart
Tino & Marie Martinez,

and Chris Wilson at the
Heart to Heart Celebration
The idea of "seeing the world through the eyes of a child" inspires visions of appreciating
the little things in life. But when that child is suffering from a serious heart condition, they
see things we wish they never had to. Still, they and their families celebrate even the smallest
successes.
Recently, a group of grateful parents got to thinking. With 750 or so cardiothoracic
procedures being done each year at SJCH, there were hundreds of families who could benefit
from the support of others in similar situations. And so the Heart to Heart Reunion was born.
Families enjoyed inspiration from each other's stories, as well as the support of local
celebrities and sports athletes including, Tino Martinez (formerly of the New York Yankees)
and Tampa Bay Buccaneer Shelton Quarles. Sportscaster Eric Keaton emceed the event.
Attendees celebrated their children's health and the success of the Children's Heart Center,
which includes Florida's premier pediatric heart surgery program. In addition to treating all types of congenital
and acquired cardiac disorders, the pediatric cardiology center provides ongoing care on an outpatient basis for
children with heart disease.
"To see all the smiling faces on these kids and to watch them playing and having a great time, meant
everything to us," said Adrianne Wilson. "I can't wait until next year."
The heartwarming event wouldn't have been possible without the support of event sponsors: Heritage Ford,
Hospital Parking Management, Publix Supermarkets, Sam's Club, Stone Construction and Intimate Caterers, Inc.
If you would like information on the Heart to Heart Reunion, or would like to
support the pediatric heart program, please call the Foundation at 872-0979.

Scholarship Program at St. Joseph's Hospitals.
Experienced anglers and weekend fisherman alike are encouraged to
participate. Following the day of fishing, event participants will enjoy
an awards dinner on the back deck of Rattlefish. A special award – The

With vital support provided by donors, the St. Joseph's Hospitals Foundation was able to
fund the purchase of a new stereotactic table for the breast biopsy system at The Breast Center
at St. Joseph's Women's Hospital. The new table provides superior imaging capability and
compliments the existing digital mammography unit. "The greatest benefit for our patients is
that the increased visualization results in earlier detection of breast disease," according to
Kimberly Guy, chief operating officer of St. Joseph's Women's Hospital.
In addition to aiding in the early detection of breast cancer, the table offers the option of a
less invasive core biopsy to patients as an alternative to invasive surgery. St. Joseph's Women's
Hospital is committed to make the time from detection to diagnosis as short as possible, knowing that uncertainty is so difficult for the patient and their family.

CARDEL HOMES "BRAS FOR A CAUSE"
EVENT RAISES $25,000 FOR ST. JOSEPH'S
BREAST CANCER AWARENESS
Breast cancer survivors at a "Faces of Courage" retreat spelled out their message loud
and clear. The 5,000 bras collected during Cardel Homes "Bras for a Cause" were arranged
to read END BREAST CANCER.
Cardel Homes donated $10 for each of the bras collected during their charity event to
breast cancer causes. St. Joseph's Women's Hospital's Project REACH program was selected
to receive half the proceeds.
Project REACH seeks to increase the number of
mammograms utilized by medically underserved
women in Hillsborough County. Participants receive
breast self exam instruction, a clinical breast exam
and a screening mammogram on St. Joseph's
Women's Hospital's mobile mammography unit.
LEGISLATION IMPACTS
CHARITABLE GIVING:
Giving from an
IRA Advantageous
President Bush recently signed into law a
pension reform bill containing a package of
charitable giving incentives and safeguard
measures. Among the incentives is an IRA
rollover provision that allows individuals
age 70½ and older to make charitable
donations up to $100,000 from an IRA
without having to count the donation as
taxable income. This provision will apply to
gifts made prior to January 1, 2008.
Kimberly Guy (l), chief operating officer of
St. Joseph's Women's Hospital accepts a $25,000 donation
from Cardel Homes design consultant Terrie Donnell.
Previously, making an IRA gift was
complicated, requiring the donor to pay
taxes on the amount withdrawn from the
IRA, then claiming a charitable deduction,

Also included in the law is a rule now requiring substantiation for cash contributions to charity. Previously,
documentation for one's taxes had been required only for gifts of $250 or more. Beginning next year,
taxpayers will be expected to have a receipt or canceled check for every monetary gift.

documentation of every gift, regardless of amount.

IRA funds directly to a charity, have it count
as a portion of their distribution, and not
pay taxes on it.
