Mullayanagiri Peak

While scaling Mt Everest may literally seem
out of reach, why not head over to
Mullayanagiri and scale the highest peak of
Karnataka. A part of the Baba Budan Giri
range in Chikmagalur, Mullayanagiri is
possibly one of the best places not just in
Karnataka, but in Southern India where you
can give wings or rather ropes to your desire
to rough it out and be in commune with
Mother Nature.While there is a smooth road
winding all the way up to the peak that you
can drive on, but it won’t be soon before the
landscape captivates and lures you out to
walk all the way up as it should be
experienced. Halfway up the climb the range
begins to get enveloped in thick clouds and
you come across a small shrine along the
way.Mullaiyanagiri (25 km from town) is
Karnataka’s highest peak with an ancient,
but newly renovated, Mullapaswamy
Temple. In the warmer months, the hike up
is relatively easy and the views spectacular.
Camp here for the night (the temple priest
might even arrange a quick meal for you)
and you’ll find the stars look close enough to
touch. But the hike up to Mullaiyanagiri will
be a tough task in the rainy months.
As you approach the peak and begin to
climb the last few 1000 steps, don’t be
surprised if it feels like you have stepped
inside one of those fluffy clouds you spotted
from down below.

The Baba Budanagiri Hills are 25 km from
Chikmagalur town and home to the cave
shrine (Dattatreya Peeth) of the Sufi mystic,
Hazrat Dada Hayath Mir Khalander.
Surrounded by coffee plantations, the
shrine of the Baba attracts many devotees,
both Muslim and Hindu. The beautiful
Manyakyadhara Waterfalls are a 2-km walk
from the shrine. Even though the path is
slippery in the monsoons, the falls are
bewitching. You may also have a picnic by
the splendid lake from where the falls
originate. And, every 12 years the hills are a
purple-hued mass under the weight of the
blossoming wild kurinji flowers.
