LUSD JammingOut the House of Blues is going strong
and the place to be on a Wednesday night if you want to
jam or check out various talents coming together on stage.
NOTE: Starting in March, a BLUSD Member
band with be drawn out of a hat at our monthly
Board meetings and one band each month will
get the opportunity to have a featured set the
following month plus a spotlight feature in Blue
Ink. If you are not a member band please sign up
and (see member application this issue).

Youth Blues Jam
T
he monthly Youth Blues Jam is held at the Gaslamp
Speakeasy (708 4th Ave., corner of 4th & G) downtown
once a month. The schedule so far is as follows: Saturdays
2 pm-5 pm March 22, April 19 and May 24. The jam is hosted by
talented 17 year old guitarist/singer, Leilani Kilgore.
FOOD & DRINK: Although this is a bar it is a family friendly
venue on a Saturday afternoon with food and beverages available.
If you want to bring your own snacks and refreshments that is no
problem.
PARKING: Metered parking is readily available in the streets
around the corner of 4th and G. Horton Plaza will give you 3 hours
PARKING FOR FREE when you validate your ticket in one of
the machines.
EQUIPMENT: Bring your Guitars and Amps, or whatever
instrument you choose to play that day except drums which are
provided...Please bring your own sticks!
This is a great opportunity for youth to jam with other young
musicians in town under the age of 22. Spread the good word.

Ambassador Leilani
Kilgore meets idol
H
ere’s a note from Leilani’s father about a super cool
chance encounter she had recently plus an upcoming
performance:
“Last Saturday we were in L.A. with Chase [Walker] to go to an
MI school presentation and then go to a Joe Bonamassa gig that
evening at the Baked Potato. We stopped at the Guitar Center in
the vintage room so Leilani and Chase could play some exotic,
favorite guitars before heading to the jazz club and some people
at the Guitar Center complemented Leilani’s playing (some
Bonamassa pieces). One lady was a friend/fan of Joe
Bonnamassa’s and another person there was Joe Bonammassa's
tech ( we saw him but didn’t talk to him).
We saw the lady at the club before the show and she made a
pretty big deal of Leilani to all these folks in line outside the club
and chased JB down to tell him about Leilani. Later (before the
show) JB came over and introduced himself to Leilani at our table
and had a conversation about her guitar playing. He and the band
were awesome.
After the performance Leilani and Chase had their guitars signed
and photos taken with JB and he asked to be kept in the loop with
Leilani. They had a long talk. I gave the Youth Jam flier to him
and he seemed pretty interested. The evening was a blast.
Leilani is doing a song with Laurie Morvan at the LABS benefit
for the Blues Society’s Blues Museum at the Anaheim House of
Blues on Sunday February 23. Laurie is the main act at the gig.

DOUBLE DARE
Frank Bang and the
Secret Stash

After hearing a Frank
Bang and the Secret
Stash song on Sirius a
few years back, I jumped
on the internet and
searched around, trying
to get myself a copy.
However, the album was
out of print, no MP3’s were available, and the cheapest one I
could find was selling used, on Amazon for around $100, well
over the average blues lover’s budget. Even though I couldn’t
procure it at that time, it made such a strong impression that it
remained on my mental list of really-needed cd’s. Then, a
couple of months ago, Frank Bang came blasting out of my
radio again, with “Burning Up in the Wind” from this new CD!
I bee-lined to Amazon and secured my prize.
Guitarist Frank “Bang” Blinkal burns up the airwaves with his
smoking, slinky electric slide and his compelling vocals that
insinuate themselves between your brain cells like a crawling
King snake. The title track, “Double Dare” will sizzle your
socks off. Then “Burnin’ Up in the Wind,” featuring Russ Green
guesting on harp, will flatten you to the ground. There are a few
country crossovers, some sweet acoustic numbers, and a little
rock, all executed perfectly by Frank and band members Ryan
Fitzgerald on bass and Bobby Spelbring on drums.
He’s got a lot of Chicago blues experience in his background,
including working at Buddy Guy’s Legends, where he had the
chance to jam with many blues luminaries, and touring
worldwide as a member of Buddy’s band. His love and respect
for the blues masters that came before him shine through in his

avid Bromberg will appear at AMSD Concerts

Singer, songwriter, and guitarist David Bromberg has
built a lengthy career by being undervalued and toofrequently overlooked. A skilled multi-instrumentalist
with an intuitive feel for traditional musical styles like
blues, folk, and gospel, Bromberg's talents are highly
considered by fellow musicians.
His 2013 release, Only Slightly Mad, “runs the gamut
from traditional blues, gospel, and hippie folk to English
drinking songs and hillbilly country... a rock solid
collection of Americana music ... Bromberg has the scars
and mileage to pull off a musical hat trick like this and
the album wears like a comfortable old suit,” says
reviewer Reverend Keith A. Gordon.

MIDNIGHT BLUE
Tinsley Ellis
Heartfixer
One of the most prolific
songwriters in the blues,
Tinsley Ellis follows up on
his excellent 2013
instrumental release, Get It,!
with this new collection of
ten self-written songs right
off the bat for 2014. Midnight
Blue features life-story lyrics that equal his one of his most wellknown songs, “A Quitter Never Wins,” made famous by Jonny
Lang.
Ellis started playing guitar at age 8, and was stricken with blues
fever as a young teenager, when he saw BB King performing
live. From that early inspiration, he stuck to his vision and
propelled himself to the top.
He has been in the business long enough to have recorded 15
albums since 1983, gaining recognition as a masterful guitarist
and exceptional vocalist along the way. Just put him in a studio
or on a stage, hand him a guitar and he steps right up and takes over.
He’s supported by on this album by Kevin McKendree
(formerly with Delbert McClinton) on keys, Lynn Williams (John
Hiatt, Delbert McClinton) on drums, and Ted Pecchio (recently
with the Tedeschi Trucks Band) on bass.
Midnight Blue has its share of hard-driving blues numbers,
“The Only Thing,” “Mouth Turn Dry,” and “If the River Keeps
Rising,” while it presents us with some amusing and ironic
stories, such as “Harder to Find,” the lament of a guy who’s
sitting in the bar mulling over his love life and feeling like he’s
about to be left behind, “I See No Harm” (in loving another
man’s woman), and “Kiss of Death,” an emotional torch song
with engaging guitar licks, as well as a happy track with
Louisiana beat (“It’s Not Funny”).

2014 IBC Results from Memphis
T
he 30th International Blues Challenge (IBC), the world's largest gathering of
blues acts—concluded its five-day run on world famous Beale Street in
downtown Memphis, Jan 22, with a full day of performances before a full
house at the Orpheum Theatre. Narrowed from a record 255 acts from 40 states and
16 countries (and four continents), the 8 solo/ duo and 9 band finalists vied for the top
prizes before an esteemed panel of judges.
We want to thank the Fuzzy Rankins Band for repping San Diego and we know they
impressed a lot of players and garnerd new fans. All in all they had a great time and
got to jam at some of Beale Street’s hotspots as well!

The Blues Highway...
the story of Route 61
I
f you ever plan to motor west, Travel my way, take the
highway that is best. Get your kicks on Route Sixty-Six.
Bobby Troup wrote those words in 1946, making Route
66 the most famous road in American musical mythology, but
perhaps that honor should belong to another of the great
thoroughfares that snake their way across the United States. It
might be less known and less heralded, but Route 61 is a road
that has a strong claim to be the one that best represents the
musical soul of the country it crosses.

the stage in tribute to San Diego broadcast journalism
icon Loren Nancarrow. Enjoy performances by Eve
Selis, Berkley-Hart, Steph Johnson, Cathryn Beeks, Michael
Tiernan, Earl Thomas and more artists to be announced. Honor
Loren and, if you can, make a donation to support the Loren
Nancarrow Healing Garden Project at Scripps Radiation Therapy
Center, part of Scripps Health. This very special event will also
feature a performance by Loren's son, Graham Nancarrow, and
his band, Nancarrow.
This event includes: Food by The French Gourmet for purchase.
Beer, wine and cocktails available at the no-host bar. The Fleet's 100+ hands-on exhibits open

February is Black
History Month
I
try to pay honor where it's due. Being a blues musician as
well having that genre and its roots entrenched into my life
for many, many years, I deeply respect where the blues
came from and where it's going. I cherish the work done by the
forefathers as well as the frontrunners of this music, this
lifestyle if you will, longing for a blues fix and the passion and
truth that lies within. I can't help but associate Black History
Month with the Blues... a part of American History. Not only
the unimaginable struggles that raised it and named it but the
figures that many associate it with like W.C. Handy, Robert
Johnson, Son
House, Huddie
Ledbetter, Charley
Patton, Maime
Smith, Willie
Dixon, Ma Rainey,
Muddy Waters and
on and countless
others that left and
leave indelible
footprints.
Obviously blues
musicians are not
even the tip of the iceberg of why this month of observance was
created and we do honor them no matter the month... not black,
not white, just blues. But, for me anyway, this month brings
even more focus to the path that has carried the blues. Go and
do some research on "Black History Month" and make your
discoveries.

he Best Blues Album Grammy went to Ben Harper and
Charlie Musselwhite took home for their creative,
combined endeavor, Get Up! (Stax).
Get Up! Beat out nominees Remembering Little Walter (Billy
Boy Arnold, Charlie Musselwhite, Mark Hummel, Sugar Ray
Norcia & James Harman, Label: Blind Pig Records); Cotton
Mouth Man (James Cotton, Label: Alligator); Seesaw (Beth
Hart & Joe Bonamassa, Label: J&R Adventures); Down In
Louisiana (Bobby Rush, Label: Deep Rush Records).
Other winning categories that included some of the fine
Blues-Roots artists were the Folk Album Grammy for: My
Favorite Picture of You by Guy Clark (Dualtone Music Group)
and “Best Regional Roots Music Album Grammy for: Dockside
Sessions by Terrance Simien and the Zydeco Experience.
Clifton Chenier, the King of Zydeco, was among the Lifetime
Achievement Award honorees honored by the Recording
Academy.
The eligibility period for the 56th Annual Grammy Awards
was October 1, 2012 to September 30, 2013.
