ANGELO CAPUTO’S FRESH MARKET BLENDS FAMILY TRADITION AND
HILLPHOENIX TECHNOLOGY TO CREATE UNIQUE, SUSTAINABLE STORE FORMAT
When Robertino Presta first looked at the 300,000-square-foot building that now houses the newest
Angelo Caputo’s Fresh Market, he didn’t envision a unique, hybrid space or a shopper-pleasing
showplace. But because of the supermarket CEO’s tenacity and some expert guidance he received
from longtime trusted partners, that’s exactly what the building became.
Today, the former industrial site in Carol Stream, Illinois, not only is a stunningly designed store, but
also a commissary and warehouse from which Caputo’s can distribute goods to its seven other
Chicago-area locations. What’s more, the multi-use space is a perfect marriage of leading-edge
technology and Old World tradition.
“Hillphoenix helped us create
a functional and beautiful
space that achieves our goals
of driving business efficiency
and turning our customers’
shopping trips into events.”
—Robertino Presta,
Caputo’s Chief Executive Officer
All three parts of the building are outfitted with some of the newest refrigeration equipment on the
market, built to sustainability standards that set the 56-year-old grocery chain apart from other local
supermarkets. But those high-tech, environmentally-friendly refrigerators, freezers and display cases
— all from Hillphoenix — showcase handmade cakes, sauces and sausages made from recipes the
grocery’s founders, Angelo and Romana Caputo, brought over from Italy nearly 70 years ago.
Caputo’s relied on Hillphoenix, a longtime partner, to help design the layout and equipment
placement for the entire site. “We trusted Hillphoenix to help us create a space that could serve
multiple purposes,” said Presta, who owns the eight-chain operation with his wife, Antonella Caputo
Presta — president of the chain and the daughter of Caputo’s founders. “Hillphoenix helped us create
a functional and beautiful space that achieves our goals of driving business efficiency and turning
our customers’ shopping trips into events. Together, we created a lot of theater.”

• Store layout is designed to
engage shoppers, offering views
into how Caputo’s prepares
ready-to-go meals, baked goods
and meats that deliver authentic
taste and customer convenience
A stroll through the store reveals the sights, sounds, smells and tastes that blend old and new. The
cucina, stocked with grab-and-go meals in Hillphoenix display cases, beckons with the aroma of
international cuisines — Italian, of course, but also Latin, Asian and more. In the bakery, pastry chefs
whip up everything from layer cakes to cannoli as customers watch, and salivate. Behind another
window, butchers slice prime cuts of meat into steaks and grind the freshest ingredients into
gourmet hamburgers and old-fashioned Italian sausages.
The produce section is a visual treat stocked with colorful fruits, vegetables and herbs at the peak of
ripeness. Hillphoenix coolers situated throughout the department ensure berries and other delicate
perishables stay fresh and enticing. After picking out ingredients for a delicious dinner — or a readymade meal to take home — customers can choose a complementary wine from Caputo’s extensive
selection or check out the store’s craft beer bar.

Caputo’s designed the Carol Stream store with customers’ preferences in mind and wants them to
feel at home, Presta said. “We’re inviting customers to visit with us — to share in how we prepare the
foods they’ll take home. We want them to explore the store, to step right into the walk-in coolers and
freezers to get a close look at what’s on offer and make their own selections.”
Benefits of Hillphoenix’s AdvansorTM
CO2 Booster System
• Natural and inexpensive refrigerant
• Sustainable, with low global warming
potential compared to traditional
systems that use hydrofluorocarbons
(HFCs)
• Requires less refrigerant charge than
HFC systems
• Energy efficient in most climates
• Quieter than traditional refrigeration
equipment, enhancing shoppers’
experience in the store
• Helps grocers future-proof their
business against possible regulatory
changes related to HFCs
That refrigeration equipment reflects Caputo’s
commitment to customers and the places in which it
operates. It’s from Hillphoenix’s AdvansorTM line, which
uses environmentally sustainable CO2 refrigerant,
rather than the hydrofluorocarbon-based refrigerant
found in traditional commercial refrigeration systems.
Hydrofluorocarbons, or HFCs, emit greenhouse gases
linked to global warming.
The CO2 system was more expensive on the front end than an HFC system, Presta said, but he
expects to recoup the investment through lower refrigerant and energy costs. Plus, he won’t have to
worry about upcoming regulations on HFCs. Hillphoenix trained Caputo’s own crew so they know how
to operate and maintain the new CO2-based equipment. “Hillphoenix’s Advansor system has helped
me future-proof my business,” Presta said. “On top of that, installing CO2 was the right thing to do.”

Hillphoenix also advised Caputo’s on other sustainable features, such as choosing the proper LED
lights — ones that not only save energy, but also enhance the colors of fruits, vegetables and meat on
display. “As we designed our new location, we kept the environment in mind from top to bottom,”
Presta said. “It’s apparent in everything from the LED lighting in our refrigerated cases, store and
parking lot to the electric-car charging stations outside. Our environmental commitment also plays a
role in places our customers can’t see — our CO2 refrigeration system, of course, and the recycled
concrete in our foundation. We’re making smart business decisions that contribute to the
sustainability of our communities.”
