Dear Friends,
Thank you for your commitment to ending hunger in San Francisco and Marin. It means the
world to the people we serve.
The growing income gap is perhaps the most pressing socioeconomic problem of our time,
and it’s especially pronounced in San Francisco and Marin. While some in the Bay Area are
experiencing unprecedented success, many others cannot stretch their incomes far enough
to keep up with some of the most basic needs.
We’re proud that households can count on us to be a reliable source of healthy food within
their known, trusted communities. And we’re humbled to serve more than 144,000 people
each and every week of the year.
We’re always thinking about how to serve the families who are trying to put a warm meal on
the dinner table, the seniors who rely on nutritious food from our programs to support their
health, and the kids for whom a fresh mid-morning snack helps them focus in the classroom.
We couldn’t do this great work without donors like you. In the coming year, we will build up
our pantries in underserved areas, expand our home-delivered grocery program to homebound seniors, and extend additional resources like nutrition education classes to program
participants. We’ll reach out to ensure that everyone knows where to get food if they are
having a hard time making ends meet. And we will redouble our efforts to push for government programs that are already in place to work better for our community.

For some families, the Food Bank means the difference between having enough to eat and facing an empty
cupboard. For a mother named Erica and her daughter, a 6-year-old with cerebral palsy, this is especially true.
“I’m a single parent with a disabled child. We’re on food stamps, and today is the 20th of the month. Food
stamps only last so long. The Food Bank is really helpful at the end of the month.”
Erica attends the pantry at Marshall Elementary, where her daughter attends school. The pantry is a warm,
community affair. Parents pick up groceries from the playground while their children participate in morning P.E.
class nearby — and the pantry reliably springs up the following week at the very same time.
Walter and Mariela’s family is awaiting help that has been promised but has not yet arrived. In the meantime,
the Food Bank makes sure they and their two young daughters have enough to eat.
“I’ve been on disability for two months, but have not received a check,” Walter explains. “This food helps a lot.
My daughters especially like the blueberries and the apples. They like to eat healthy.”
“Since the downturn in the economy in 2008, I haven’t worked as much as I would have liked. It’s hard living off
my savings and I’m really thankful for this place and that I can access it. Every little bit helps,” says Margaret.
“Some of the week’s food planning revolves around what we get at the pantry. I eat more salads than I ever have!”
“The food helps a lot. It’s very helpful,” says Fatima, who takes care of her father and mother, who are both
in their nineties. “My mother, she likes the vegetables. My father is sick, and the doctor says the chicken is
helpful.”

The Food Bank ended the 2013-2014 fiscal year
with an annual operating budget of $17.5 million.

The Food Bank receives shared maintenance
fees from our partner agencies in order to offset
the cost of soliciting, transporting and storing food.
These fees range from 0 to 18 cents per pound
and average less than one cent per pound for the
year ended June 30, 2014.
