Instead of toasting the recent
conclusions of the Mutya ng Pilipinas Melbourne and Maturate
Model Competition, organisers
of both beauty pageants are currently embroiled in controversies after some dissatisfied candidates and supporters hurled
criticisms and complaints on the
pageant’s results and the way the
competition was handled.
Organisers of both pageants
were quick to denounce the
accusations in public and maintained the pageant’s integrity.
They claimed that such gestures
are attempts to divide the community and derail the support
for the reigning winners.
However, efforts to address
the allegations seem to fall short
in pacifying the complainants
as issue after issue continue to
spring to life.

Four seasons with Manny Asuncion
It’s a fulfilment of a
long-time dream. Manny
G. Asuncion, one of the
founders of Dulaang Bayan
Melbourne Inc (DBMI) and
a critically-acclaimed playwright, is set to launch his
first book called Seasons:
An Anthology of Filipino
Australian Plays Down Under on 30 August 2014, 1 to
4pm at the Blue Room, 501
Reception in Barkley Street,
West Footscray.
Seasons is a compilation
of seven of the best plays
he wrote and directed in
Melbourne from 1990 to
2009. Some of the stories
pay tribute to the country’s
climate patterns, such as
Winter’s Chill, Autumn
Sonata, Ikalawang TagSibol ni Mang Forante and
Summer Butterflies. Other
titles include Mga Eksena
sa Airport at Iba Pa and
Kesehoda.
While all these plays have
their respective colourful
stories and approaches,
from the comedic Kesehoda
to the monologues of Mga
Eksena, they have one central element: they all dwell
around the lives of the
Filipino migrants in Aus-
tralia, focusing primarily
on the dreams, hopes and
aspirations of these Filipino
families. In fact, Seasons is
the first book of its kind to
be published in Australia.

mind”
For more than 20 years,
Asuncion has been very
active in the Melbourne
theatre scene, working
with DBMI, which he cofounded, and Adarna Productions, which staged
Winter’s Chill. He normally
gets his inspiration for the
stories from regular observations of Filipinos usually in public places such
as airports and overheard
conservations from friends
and strangers.
However, it has also been
his lifelong dream to gather
all his stories and compile
them into a book. Due to
his other pressing commitments like further studies,
he wasn’t able to follow
through until today. In a
recent interview with The
Philippine Times, Asuncion
expressed his deep sigh
of relief after completing
Seasons. “Now I can say
that I have fulfiled my
dream and have peace of
mind. For all these years,
there’s always a little nagging voice whispering in
my ears telling me, ‘Have
your book written! Have
your book written!’ Now
I’m vindicated.” He also
feels elated and honoured
for having contributed to
the growth of Filipino literature in Australia.

Asuncion believes that
Seasons is perfect for the
Filipino-Australian communities. He specifically

material for other playwrights, writers, researchers and drama students.

DBMI and work on compiling his other writings such
as poems, essays and short
stories.

The ugly side of beauty
We, Filipinos are beauty pageant-crazed!
From the time a young girl recognises beauty,
she could be initiated into beauty pageants
in the school, barangay, community, noon
time show, or the more established pageant
institutions. We protect our young girls and
ladies so that mosquitoes don’t feast on the
flawless legs, that their face won’t discolour
under the sun (cue the umbrella and the sun
block) or break out with zits, and that their
figure will develop into the shape of a cocacola bottle. Of course, beauty pageants have
also been penetrated by men and transvestites, showing that pageantry, beauty, wit and
poise are no longer the domain of women.
In Melbourne, we hand out crowns and
sceptres left and right throughout the year
to acknowledge Filipino beauty, showcase
Filipino talent and wit and uphold values
that represent our culture. We support our
candidates, buy tickets which help them win
the crown, and enjoy a night of glitter and
glamour. We engage our friends to support
our candidates and cheer them on throughout
the pageant. Ideally, beauty pageants encourage friendship and camaraderie as among
their ideals. However, what could be an event
for highlighting beauty can make the wrong
turn to its ugly side.
We usually hear in Filipino politics, nobody loses but was just cheated. Sometimes,
this attitude is also present in the beauty
pageant arena. Recently, the results of beauty/
modeling competitons and manner of conduct have been put in question, rendering
the reputation of organisers as well as the
competitors on the line. What should have
been a happy occasion turned a bitter tune
when supporters or competitors question
the results and the processes involved in
running pageants.
Holding a beauty pageant is no joke these
days. Organisers hire trainers, make up artists, choreographers, contract fashion houses

to glam up the candidates and engage luminaries in beauty and business as judges to
give everyone a spectacular program. But
their responsibility is beyond the show, the
more important accountability of organisers
is the integrity of the competition—to show
transparency in judging, accuracy in the computation of scores, honour the commitment
made to candidates before the competition
and provide equal and fair exposure to all
competitors regardless of their stance during
the pre-pageant day.
Meanwhile, joining a beauty pageant is
no walk in the park either. Candidates go
through grueling rehearsals perfecting their
walk, brush up on knowledge and form
opinions on issues and learn to articulate
them with poise and without cracking under extreme pressure and glam up and put
on happy, smiling faces for social functions
despite the fatigue. They are ambassadors
of beauty indeed. However, beyond representing beauty, candidates should also
symbolise integrity. They should compete
fairly and should not engage in actions that
malign other candidates just to get ahead of
the rest. When the judges call out the name
of the winner, candidates who failed to take
home the crown should humbly accept the
decision of the judges.
These days, we take beauty pageants too
seriously, or in our local parlance, “masyadong kinakarir”, sometimes to the point that
we forget why we are holding it. Beauty pageants should be a venue to celebrate positive
values, to make good memories and allow the
beauty of truthfulness, honesty and kindness
to radiate from everyone involved. If pride
and personal grandiose were to take over,
beauty will then be rendered meaningless.
Organisers, supporters, candidates should
realise that true beauty is beyond what our
eyes see. When we throw our integrity to the
door, we all become ugly in the beauty race.

Federation Square as well as to
those who attended our Independence Day Mass last 11 June at St

It is indeed a blessing to be able
to express our pride in our being
Filipino in our second home in
Melbourne, Australia. I can only
hope and pray that more Filipinos
and Filipino-Australians share
this sentiment as we remember
the blood, sweat and tears of
our forefathers as they fought so

Celebrations with the Independence Day Mass celebrated on the
eve of Philippine Independence
and the Philippine Flag Raising
on 12 June are two simple yet
profound events that urge us to
show our nationalistic fervour
and pride in being Filipinos;
lest we forget who we are and
what we stand for. It has never
been more crucial for us to stand
proud and tall and act on how
we can shape the future of the
Philippines. Pinoy pride is not
just a hashtag but a call to action
of what we can achieve if we can
be united and work for the common good.

years, it has been indeed a privilege to serve you and to be part of

My journey as your Consul is
about to come to a close. We are
just awaiting the exequatur from
the Department of Foreign Affairs
and Trade of the Australian Government to formally recognise
Mr Felix Pintado, the incoming
Consul. An exequatur is a patent
which a head of state issues to a
foreign consul, guaranteeing the
consul’s rights and privileges of
offices and ensuring recognition
in the state to which the consul
is appointed to exercise such
powers. After an exequatur has
been issued, Mr Pintado, would
need to be sworn into office by
the Ambassador at the Philippine
Embassy in Canberra. I have been
asked and have agreed to remain
in office pending such actions to
ensure a smooth transition.
The Consulate Office is moving
to Level 5, 11 Queens Road Melbourne from 1 August 2014. We
will still have the old office, Suite
1205/ 1 Queens Road Melbourne
operational until 30 August 2014
to aid our kababayans during this
transition phase.

Sudden break
After a quick and seemingly fleeting six months,
it’s time for me to say
goodbye to Tristan. And
strangely, I feel quite sad to
do so. But before you think
that it’s only natural to be
melancholic when it comes
to partings and departures,
let me just point out that
Tristan isn’t a person. It’s
an inanimate object: my car.
I’m lucky enough to be
able to change automobile
regularly as part of a lease
agreement. In the last four
years, I’ve gone through
three different vehicles. It’s
cost-efficient, tax-effective
and definitely very cool.
Not to mention, that new
car smell gets seriously addictive.
Usually I have a whole
year to play around with
(and trash) said vehicles
before the changeover occurs, which doesn’t leave
much room for getting too
attached to something that
really is just a pile of metal and some rubber. But
there’s something about this
car that makes me that tiny
bit reluctant to part ways
with. Aside from the fact
that it’s a fantastic piece of
machinery to drive – not
to mention that I look very
cool in it – I think what it
really boils down to is the
suddenness of letting go. I
thought I had at least a few
more months.
It made me think about
relationships in general and
how sudden break-ups can
result in acrimonious – and
sometimes downright nasty
– circumstances between
people.
A friend of mine was
recently dumped by his
former partner on the day
of their second anniversary. He didn’t even realise
that anything was wrong
until he went to meet his
then-boyfriend to what he
thought was going to be a
celebration of their special
occasion. Expecting a shower of hugs, sweet kisses
and undying declarations
of love, what he arrived to
instead was the cold, harsh
realisation of their relationship ending. Understandably, my friend was quite
shocked and upset.
Part of the reason was the
way things had unravelled
between the two of them
as he felt truly blind-sided
by how it all had ended so
abruptly. But mostly, it was
the lack of opportunity he
believed he was not given
to try and fix the things in
the relationship he felt was
worth fixing; something
he deemed quite strongly
was owed to him. The unresolved feelings my friend
had been left with certainly
fuels the bitterness he now
has towards his former
partner.
And isn’t that the unfortunate crux to the whole
sorry event? The lack of
explanation and closure the
one left behind is burdened
with when such things happen so unexpectedly. It’s the
relationship equivalent of
purgatory or limbo.
On the other hand, however, would the opposite
have made things any better? Would my friend have
felt the same if he knew
his break-up was coming?
Would it have been easier
if he had been warned in
advance? Perhaps. Perhaps
not. He doesn’t know. He’s
busy trying his best to let go
and move on.
Meanwhile, Tristan’s departure creeps ever closer.
It may not have been the
whole year I’m normally
used to, but the last few
months have been swell.
Pathetic as it sounds, I’m ac-
tually going to be sad when I
say goodbye. But before that
happens – before I let go – I
think I’ll take him out for
one last ride. Vroom, vroom.

aspirants to ensure that
they meet the minimum

The annual beauty
pageant underscores
beauty for a cause
through an advocacy
that supports various community organisations and
charitable institutions in
the Philippines and Australia. The pageant is now
on its 26th year.
The application form for

pageant terms and conditions are in the same
location. The submission
of applications closes on
15 July.
A presentation night
will be held on 9 August to
introduce the candidates to
the public.
The current pageant
director is Leah PrietoMcCarthy who won the
title in 1990. Her pageant committee includes:

World Pageant held in China representing the Philippines. Nicole Schmitz,
who won in 2012, was the
Philippines’ bet in the 2013
Miss International Pageant
held in Japan.

formally launched

in a very special high tea
event in Melbourne Melrose
Reception Centre on 15 June
2014. The event focused on
introducing the Foundation’s core vision and strategy, values and mission, as
well as its pilot community
development initiative, the
Let us Sell Goods Livelihood
Project.
Frontline Foundation’s
central focus will be supporting the indigenous
communities in the Philippines through training
and development to help
them achieve sustainable
livelihood and experience
holistic transformation.
Abadilla has a long-standing concern for the impoverished communities in different regions in the Philippines. Since 2011, Frontline
Foundation has organised
numerous projects, such as
the installation of a deep
well water system in Iligan
City, the provision of a tricycle in Cogeo, Antipolo, and
the distribution of teaching
materials in Apalit, Pampanga. The formal launch of
the Foundation amplifies the
momentum that drives the
organisation’s community
development efforts.
“This event is a culmination of three years of hard
work to make a God-given
dream become a reality,”
said Abadilla. “It is important to us that we create a
strong partnership between
generous involved parties
and needy communities.
We aim to facilitate strategic
planning and implementation of asset-based community development projects to
inspire and build hope for
all involved parties.”
“Witnessing how these
families can survive below
the poverty line, and still
maintain a cheerful disposition is encouraging,” said
Moody. “It is important
that our Foundation continues to
inspire and build
hope so the people
can have the motivation to create
a positive change
within their neighbourhood or community.”
Abadilla and
Moody also announced the Foundation’s pilot initiative, the Let us Sell
Goods Livelihood
Project, which focuses on financial
literacy and empowerment through microfinance.

Ranieri from the ACC International Relief, Major Sponsor David Reid and Senior
Pastor Buddy Abadilla from
Connect City Church (CCC),
and the Foundation’s staff
and volunteers. Special performances were provided by
the talented CCC Choir and

Outward Bound scholarship. She spent eight days
taking part in a national
“aspiring leaders” summit

to take part. Czarina was humbled by this privilege.
But as a school leader, she has been taking up difficult
challenges as opportunities for growth which helps
her overcome her natural shyness. The Soriano-Orodio
Foundation raises funds for the needy in the Philippines
and Czarina focuses a lot of her energy on this project
as it is close to her heart. Her family is truly proud
of her, as she is a young talent whose love for others
shines through.

Grand Coronation Night was
a definite glamorous and
glittering evening. The event
was held at the L’Amour Reception at Henry Street on
14 June 2014.
Aptly themed “The Goddess Ball,” some guests arrived in white diaphanous
tunics complete with gold
pendants and shining bracelets like the ones worn by
Aphrodite (the Greek goddess of Love), Artemis (Moon
goddess), Hera (Queen of
heaven) and other gods and
goddesses of Mt. Olympus.
Few males turned up resembling Greek gods like
Bacchus (the god of wine)
complete with golden laurel
leaves crowning their heads.
All the Mutya ng Pilipinas
Melbourne Committee members were in their attractive
and immaculate Greek goddesses costumes.
Kim Fyfe of Geelong was
crowned Mutya ng Pilipinas
Melbourne 2014 together
with Miss Pauline Edralin as First Runner-up and
Mutya Vicoola Fashionista
2014. Both title holders will
compete in the Mutya ng
Pilipinas Pageant at Solaire
Resort Manila, Philippines
on 8 August 2014.
Other winners were: Miss
Vanessa Klevenz (Mutya ng
Pilipinas Melbourne 2014,
Fourth Runner-Up); Miss
Sharina Timbayan (3rd Runner-up and Mutya Mega
World 2014) and Miss Nickole Smirnov (2nd Runner-up
and Mutya Magnificent Miss
2014).
Apart from the beauty
titles, awards were given
to: Miss Vanessa Klevenz
(Darling of the Press); Miss
Nickole Smirnov (Miss Photogenic); Miss Sharina Timbayan (Miss Friendship);
Miss Kim Fyfe (Most Guests,
Best in Catwalk; Best in
Long Gown, Best in Filipino
National Costume and Best
in Talent) and Miss Pauline
Edralin (People’s Choice
Award).
The five young candidates
were not only judged based
on originality and creativity of their long gowns and
Filipino national costumes,
but also on how they carried themselves with utmost
elegance, beauty and charm.
They were also asked to
display their unique talents
as well as their wit and intelligence by responding to the
judges’ thought-provoking
questions.
All title holders received
cash and in-kind prizes from
the pageants’ donors and
supporters.
According to Choy Symes,
Mutya ng Pilipinas 2014
Australia Chairperson, it
took eight months to prepare
the pageant.
“Meeting and working
with such lovely and beautiful candidates was an unforgettable journey. My candidates had the chance to gain
more confidence through
exposures like photo shoots
and runways. It is an experience that will be embedded
in all the candidates’ memories forever. The efforts and
creativity of all the candidates made the coronation
night an unforgettable evening,” quipped the amiable
Ms Symes.

Mutya supporter demands
answers from organisers
Dear Editor,
I am writing as a supporter of all the girls who competed in the Mutya ng Pilipinas held
on 14 June 2014.
I’ve attended many pageants in my life and by far this has been the most unenjoyable to
watch.
After having a conversation with one of the contestant, it appears that they were not
made aware of potential awards they could win throughout this whole experience. Awards
were just being handed out on the night like it was “Christmas”, even to the one whom many
people and I believe is not deserving of it. It may be due to the judges who I found unfit to
choose the right girl to represent us in the Philippines. It was announced that all the girls
were winners on the night.
I then found a Facebook wall that posted the results of the event—Hector Calara-Photography. I knew at the time that Mr. Hector Calara was heavily involved with the organisers
and I asked if he knew to whom I could pass my feedback. I was then blocked from his wall
and was not able to get the answers I sought. He then continued to post on his wall which
said, “Some supporters of a Losing Candidate like Jeremy Emana cannot accept the results”.
Yesterday at 9.30am, while listening to 92.3 Hoy Pinoy, I called in to ask Ms. Choy Symes
who introduced herself as the National Director of the organisation if the chosen judges met
the criteria set by Mutya ng Pilipinas organisation since she is trying to have the rights for the
name here in Australia. My question was sadly not answered again.
Now, given the opportunity. May I ask the organisers of the Mutya ng Pilipinas Melbourne
to clarify my enquiries which are as follows:
- When you found the contestants, did they all meet your requirements in terms of height,
weight etc.? Why were you measuring the girls on the night?
- Why were there special awards that came as a surprise to contestants?
- For the most popular award, I noticed that Kim Fyfe’s photo was released on 11/03/14 and
the other 3 girls on the following day and Sharina’s was released on the 24/03/14? Was that
a fair competition?
- Who chose the judging panel and did you have any affiliation with any of them or perhaps
a parent of one of the candidates?
- Why was it possible for one of the judges to say to the winner that she will win?
I am doing this not because the contestant I supported did not win. It is because I feel that
the truth needs to come out. I speak on behalf of most of the people who spent their time
supporting the contestants and expected to watch a fair competion, but it seemed to me
like it was not. Let’s support each other and choose our leaders wisely. Let’s be professional. To the organisers, please prove me wrong. Was this an experiment?

We are thankful that The
Philippine Times has given
us the opportunity to respond to the following issues:
First, the complainant
makes issue of the fact that
we measured the height of
the candidates prior to the
coronation night.
It is common knowledge
that every pageant has a set
of physical requirements
such as height as a qualification for contestants. This
was made known to the candidates prior to entering the
competition. Although they
stated their height in their
application form, we asked
independent individuals to
do the actual measurement
for the candidates to witness
so they will have no doubts
as to the qualification of
their fellow contestants.
Second, the complainant
makes issue of the special
awards given during our
various events.
During the induction and
before the coronation night,
we gave the contestants their
copies of the criteria for
judging determined at various events: 15% Swimsuit;
20% Video Presentation;
15% Talent; 15% Filipino
National Costume; 15% Evening Gown; 20% Question
and Answer.
The candidates were also
informed that the following
special awards, determined
at events prior to the coronation night, were to be given
but would have no bearing
on the final result: Special
Award for Rio Costume,
Beach Body, Ms. Photogenic,
Most Popular, Darling of the
Press, Ms. Friendship, Best in
Catwalk, and Most number
of guests during the events.
Third, the complainant
makes issue of the fact that
the photos of the contestants
were not posted online at the
same time.
This is a misinformed
statement. All of the photos
were posted on the same
date 11 March. However,
Sharina Timbayan and Pauline Edralin asked me to delete their photos and replace
these with new photos for
personal reasons. Pauline
sent me her photo on 12
March and was posted on
the same date. Sharina’s
photo was not posted until
24 March 2014 because of
the delay in providing her
photo of choice.
Fourth, the complainant
alleges that the organisers
and judges are ‘affiliated’
with a parent of one of the
contestants.
As a small community, we
know most of the Filipinos
in Melbourne. In fact, we
get contestants by personally
inviting them or asking permission from their parents.
To make issue of the fact
that we know Filipinos is
preposterous.
Despite these explanations, it is expected that
there would be continued
resentment or a failure to
accept the result. We respect
that. But we also respect the
decision that our esteemed
judges made. To end the
argument and counter argument, we are providing the
scores of the contestants,
which were witnessed by
Mike and Liz Honey.

our duty to respond to the

raises $10,000
The Philippine Australian Medical Association,
Victoria (PAMA) was able to
raise close to $10,000 during
its first fundraising dinnerdance event for its medical
missions in the Philippines.
Attended by around 200
guests, the event was held
last 7 June 2014, 6pm at the
Mulgrave Country Club in
Wheelers Hill.
The funds will go to the
PAMA’s charity projects and
humanitarian aid in the
Philippines and to the professional development of
its members to equip them
with a high standard of training for patient care.

ng Pilipinas Melbourne winner and first runner-up,” she
appealed.
Maturate Model Competition concludes with criticisms

also questioned the judges’
selection of the winner and
the winner’s fitness for the
title.
Basa, in her letter to The
Philippine Times, stood her
ground on how the pageant was conducted. She
said, “we believe we have
maintained our professionalism and integrity in handling the competition.” She
added that the organisers
had nothing to do with the
judges’ decision and that it
is final.
Basa also reminded the
pageant’s detractors of the
purpose of the competition,
which is to help raise money
for charity. “Winning is just
a bonus,” she emphasized.

The search for Mister
Philippines Australia 2014
is now on, according to
Event Director Liza Di Blasio. The finals will be held
on 27 September 2014,
6.30pm at The Grand on
Cathies Lane in Wantirna
South.
“Mister Philippines Australia is a male pageant that
we have organised to take
advantage of the opportunities for young Filipino
men in Australia to shine.
Franchise was obtained
from Prime Events Production Philippine Foundation
Inc. The winner in Australia will be competing
for Mister International
Philippines next year,” she
told The Philippine Times.

looking for candidates from
18 to 27 years old, at least
5 feet 10 inches in height.
The candidates will be
judged on their catwalk and
runway skills aside from
their being photogenic,
good looking and having
a good fashion style. They
will also need to impress
the judges of their communication skills, their
good personality and the
way they answer during

of half Filipino descent.
The winner, she said, will
receive a return trip to the
Philippines plus $1,000.00

Di Blasio added that at
present, they are getting
sponsors to support the
event. “We are also putting together the team like
judges, choreographer and
emcee to ensure the event
will be successful. We have
tickets ready for printing,
and the venue is already
booked,” she noted.
At the moment, Di Blasio
said they have seven candidates but she’s hoping there
will be around 10 candidates to vie for the title. She
advises prospective candidates, “Don’t be scared to
join the competition. This
is not a money contest or
a fundraising event. Mister Philippines Australia
is formed to enhance the
lifestyle of the young Filipinos here in Australia and
it hopes to preserve our
Filipino culture.”

annual Philippine Fiesta will
be held on the last week of
October (25-26) instead of
the usual last weekend of
November. This is due to the
Melbourne Showground’s
busy schedule. “The theme of this year’s
Fiesta is ‘Sama-sama, Kayang-kaya’ which articulates
that being united can easily
achieve the goal. No matter how hard the task is, if
people work together as one,
it can be done,” Asuncion
told The Philippine Times. The Philippine Fiesta of

its 32nd anniversary this year.

The ambiance was vibrant,
and the crowd was just fantastic. It was an unforgettable and interesting culmination evening for all the
17 candidates and everyone
involved in the running of
the Mr. and Miss Twenteen
and Maturate Model of Victoria Competition 2014. It
was another sell out year for
the modeling competition,
and we are grateful to the
all the people who joined us
and supported our cause and
made this event possible.
The highlight of the night
was the catwalk of the 17
candidates in three categories: the cocktail dress,
evening gown and national
costume for the ladies; and
casual wear, formal suit
and national costume for
the gentlemen. All of them
looked divine and marvelous
that night. Even the eight
judges were so impressed
by how the candidates presented themselves and were
mesmerised by their colourful and stylish outfit,
not to mention the unique
traditional costume of each
candidate.
As much as we like all
of them to win, it’s just impossible because only one
stood out and captivated the
judges’ eyes based on stage
presence, catwalk and confidence. We have to respect
the judges’ decision and accept it as final.
The purpose of this year’s
modeling competition is to
raise funds for the Emer-
gency Relief Fund for Philippines (ERFFP) to assist them
in their projects in the Philippines. We have donated
to them $1,750, a part of the
proceeds from the sale of the

born. It is now the Church of St Anne, walk the
Via Dolorosa, the route that Jesus took between
his condemnation by Pilate and his crucifixion
and burial which for many Christians is the most

attended the 116th Independence Celebration Ball
initiated by the Filipino
Community Council of Victoria Inc. (FCCVI) and the
Philippine-Australian Foundation Inc (PAFI) held on 7
June at Grand Star Receptions in Altona North.
The theme for this year’s
Independence Day celebration was Isang Kasaysayan,
Isang Kinabukasan, which
underscored the significance of our Filipino heroes
and other Filipino citizens
who helped shape and realize our independence. The theme was well articulated by the current
chairperson of FCCVI, Perla
Luetic, who welcomed the
guests and delivered her
speech in Filipino. The program began with
the assembly of all the Filipino community leaders
who are members of the
Filipino Community Council of Victoria, followed by
the singing of the Australian National Anthem and
the Pambansang Awit ng
Pilipinas (The Philippine
National Anthem). Felix Pintado, the incoming Honorary Consul, read
the message of Philippine
Ambassador to Australia the
Hon. Belen Anota, in the absence of Ms Gigi Kalong (the
outgoing honorary consul)
who was in Sydney at the
time of the celebration. The Mayor of the City
of Maribyrnong, Cr Grant
Miles greeted the members and officers of the
Filipino organisations and
praised the Filipinos for
being friendly and hospitable and most of all, being
resilient in times of war and
calamities.
Gintong Kultura, composed mostly of young
dancers in their teens, presented Pandanggo sa Ilaw,
and the Filipino national
dance Tinikling. The Pilipino Australian Association of Ballarat Inc (PAABI)
demonstrated their dancing skills by presenting
Binasuan, followed by the
Damayan Seniors Dance
Group, while the Loddon
Campaspe of Bendigo performed an Arabic cultural
influence dance. Most guests arrived in
their Filipino costume in
reverence to the Independence Day celebration.

special heart-rousing song
Ako’y Filipino. Rolly Limun and Pastor Anthony
Crisostomo, both of FCCVI
sang Filipino and American
songs. Acknowledgement was
delivered by Lily Gillespie,

Day celebration a success.
The celebration was concluded with a raffle and

Every day, hundreds of
Filipinos apply for an Australian visa for work, study,
travel and migration purposes. Unfortunately, many
of them are not granted
their desired visas due to
insufficient documents or
requirements. It is actually
beneficial to seek the advice
of a Registered Migration
Consultant to ensure that
the proper documents and
requirements are included
when you lodge your visa
application.
One of the requirements
that pose a challenge to
visa applicants is financial
requirement. As a matter
of fact, a couple of weeks
ago, one of our kababayans
who enrolled in courses
on Certificate III and IV in
Aged Care approached me
for some advice regarding
financial capacity. If you
also have the same concern,
you may find the advice I
gave her very helpful.
First of all, if you are an
international student, you
are required to demonstrate
and/or declare that you
have genuine access to sufficient funds to be granted
a Student Visa. Specifically,
you must demonstrate that
you have maintained the
required funds from an acceptable financial institution, and that the money
has been held for at least
three months immediately
before the date of application. You must also be able
to show access to the funds
in Australia.
If another person is funding your accommodation,
support and general welfare
for the duration of your stay
in Australia, the money deposit must be held by the
individual who is providing
support to you for at least
three months immediately
before the date of application. A financial supporter
must be your parents or
siblings. If next of kin, he/
she must be an Australian
citizen or a permanent resident.
In case your funds come
from a loan, these funds
must be obtained from acceptable financial institutions.
Financial support for
a Student Visa includes
travel, tuition, and living
expenses. For travel expenses, you and your family members are required
to have one return air fare
to Australia per person. For
tuition expenses, you as the
applicant must have the
required course fees while
your family members who
are of school age (5-18 years
old) require $8,000 per year.
For living expenses, you
need $18, 610 per year; your
partner, $6,515 per year;
your first child, $3,720 per
year; and each other child,
$2,790 per year.

Starting 1 July 2014, if a skills assessment is mandatory as part of a visa application, it will
only be valid for a period of three years from the date of issue, unless a shorter validity period
is specified on the assessment.
A skills assessment must be valid at the time of lodgement for the following visas:
• Direct Entry stream of the Employer Nominated Scheme (subclass 186) visa;
• Direct Entry stream of the Regional Sponsored Migration Scheme (subclass 187) visa; and
• Graduate Work stream of the Temporary Graduate (subclass 485) visa.

More than 300 needy
school children of Barangay
Burabod in the town of Lagonoy, Camarines Sur in the
Philippines were this year’s
beneficiaries of the annual
“Balik-Eskwela (Back-toSchool)” program conducted
by the Triskelion Melbourne
Council of Victoria, Inc. (TMCVI) when school opened
Philippine-wide last June
2014.
Grade 1 pupils from four
of the barangay’s elementary schools – Burabod, San
Ramon, Loho and Binanuahan – received school kits
containing bags, pencils,
pencil cases, rulers, notebooks and writing pads.

Manila’s De Ocampo Memorial College and Lagonoy
Community Chapter, undertook the distribution of
the bags on behalf of the
Melbourne Council. They
were rewarded with smiles
from appreciative kids as
they moved from school
to school handing out the

pilot site was handpicked by
TMCVI officials, this year’s

Abuse Awareness Day birthday remembered
The Ethnic Communities’
Council of Victoria (ECCV)
commemorated the World
Elder Abuse Awareness Day
on 15 June 2014 with a series
of advocacies and activities
on elder abuse awareness in
multicultural communities.
As part of the project,
advisory groups made up
of community members
and service providers have
met to discuss the
issue and how it affects older people in
their communities,
and subsequently
developed cultura l l y- a p p r o p r i a t e
information and
trained bilingual
workers to deliver
community education on elder abuse.
“Elder abuse can happen
to anyone, regardless of their
gender, culture or religion,
but it may be more hidden
and under-reported in ethnic
communities than in the
general population,” ECCV
chairperson Eddie Micallef
said.
Filipino community education sessions titled “Promoting respect, dignity and
care” were delivered by
bilingual community educators. These were given to
the Salaginto Caring Group,
Blackburn on 19 June, and
the Filipino Community
Council of Victoria Inc, Footscray on 30 June. An upcoming training will be given to
the Ballarat Regional Multicultural Centre on 11 July.
The same program was offered for the Macedonian community.

the youngest in the group
last year. He was also a participant of the Open Water
Swim Great Australia Day.
Ahmed has started his

Kamikazee rocks the stage Hotdog Band

For the first time, Eventfullrise Production and Talyer
Auto Servicentre presented
Kamikazee live in Australia.
These guys staged a jampacked, high-energy show.
A few hours after the show,
I was still pumped and was
filled with energy. Kamikazee rocked the crowd and
blew the stage with their raw
and distinct sound. I had a
chance to meet the members
of the band at a fan meet
and greet session held at the
Talyer Auto Service Centre
in Maidstone the day before
the concert. The band is composed of Jay Contreras (lead
vocals), Jomal Linao (lead
guitar), Led Tuyay (rhythm
guitar), Jason “Puto” Astete
(bass guitar) and Bords Burdeos (drums).
Jay jokingly explained to
me that they met in early
2000 at the College of Fine
Arts of the University of the
Philippines, and later had
an encounter with an illegal
recruiter. To pay off a debt as
a result of that, they started
the band. The band was ex-

celebrates anniversary in style out soon

On 7 June, the Cebuano
Association of Australia celebrated its 2nd anniversary
with a gala dinner at Freccia
Azzura, Keysborough.
The night started with the
Philippines and Australian
national anthems.
The outgoing President,
Alex Sy, welcomed all the
guests, including all the VIP
Guests. In his speech, he announced the launch of the
first ever English-Cebuano
Resource Workbook, coordinated with the Australian
Filipino Community Services through the leadership and chairmanship of
Cynthia.
Sy introduced the new
President, Boy Lawa, and
presented to him the Perpetual Plaque of the names
of presidents of the Cebuano
Association.
The new President, Lawa,
formally thanked Sy for all
his dedication and hard
work as the Inaugural President. Lawa then went on
to commend the work and
achievements of the As-
sociation. He praised the
work of some committee
members in personally delivering relief goods for the
victims of Typhoon Yolanda
in Cebu. He also announced
the partnership between the
Cebuano Association and
Dancesport Team Cebu City
(DTCC), providing hope and
opportunity for the street
kids in Cebu. Under this
project, DTCC Instructors
will provide free dancing
lessons, while the Cebuano
Association will provide the
dancing shoes.
We then heard the speech
by a great supporter of the
Cebuano Association, Dr Ali
Khan who praised the work
and dedication of the outgoing President. Dr Khan then
went on to present Sy and
his wife, Marites, a beautiful
gift of aboriginal artwork as
appreciation for the work
that he has done. Dr Khan
then went on to thank the
good work that the Cebuano
Association has achieved
especially during the Typhoon Yolanda fundraising
activities.
