O R G dear friends ‘‘ I agreed to become a member of the Banner Health Foundation board because I recognize that if we want to strengthen Arizona’s economic base, health care is one of the industries we can build around. ” Dear Friends, As the new Chairman of the Banner Health Foundation Board of Directors, I am honored to welcome you to this issue of FRIENDS magazine. I am proud to lead a passionate and committed group of community volunteers in an effort to garner support for Banner Health. I agreed to become a member of the Banner Health Foundation board because I recognize that if we want to strengthen Arizona’s economic base, health care is one of the industries we can build around. Banner Health continues its strategic climb toward industry leadership. After receiving numerous awards and accolades in 2012, Banner was recently recognized as one of the nation’s Top 5 Large Health Systems by Truvent (formerly Thompson Reuters) for the third time in four years. The organization will continue to focus on clinical excellence and ways to improve the patient experience in an effort to maintain its leading edge. In this issue of FRIENDS, you’ll read about the revolutionary and innovative prevention research being led by Banner Alzheimer’s Institute and the myriad of individuals, corporations and foundations who believe this work is the key to ending the disease – so much so that they have committed their valuable time and effort to support the endeavor. You’ll also read about a stunning gift from the James M. Cox Foundation and a special employee giving campaign at Freeport-McMoRan in support of the life-changing, hope-inspiring work taking place at Banner MD Anderson Cancer Center. Bill Pepicello, PhD I hope you will read and share these and other stories that highlight the remarkable and innovative work taking place throughout Banner Health. This work would not be possible without the commitment from you – our most loyal supporters. Your generosity, combined with the efforts of employees, clinicians and physicians, is what has helped make Banner Health an industry leader. Thank you for your commitment to excellent healthcare in our community. I look forward to working together to find new and innovative ways to support the important work being done at Banner Health. Sincerely, Bill Pepicello, PhD Chairman of the Board Banner Health Foundation FRIENDS SPRING 2013 |3 Sharon Harper accepts her award for 2012 Outstanding Volunteer Fundraiser by the Association of Fundraising Professionals – Greater Arizona Chapter. 2012 Philanthropy Leadership Award Given to Sharon Harper Banner Health Foundation Board Chair 2011-2012 Sharon Harper was recognized last November as the 2012 Outstanding Volunteer Fundraiser at the 28th annual Philanthropy Leadership Awards Dinner hosted by the Association of Fundraising Professionals – Greater Arizona Chapter. The Philanthropy Leadership Awards recognize individuals and organizations that exemplify the highest standards of philanthropic responsibility and generosity. Sharon just finished her two-year term as an extremely devoted and exceptional Chairman of the Board of Banner Health Foundation. Through her passion and drive she has helped establish Banner as a principal name in Arizona health care. Sharon first became involved with Banner years ago when she agreed to head a Philanthropic Development Council focused on health care needs in the West Valley. She personally recruited high profile community leaders to invest in crucial philanthropic opportunities in the area. The council’s efforts ultimately resulted in the opening of Banner Estrella Medical Center, which today provides exceptional health care in an area that was previously underserved. That Philanthropic Development Council eventually grew into what is currently known as the Banner Health Foundation Board of Directors. Over the years, Sharon has exemplified Banner’s mission to provide health care where there is a need, impacting lives across Arizona. She has acted as Banner Health Foundation’s best personal advocate and “dot connector,” utilizing her vast network of contacts to match potential supporters to areas where their talents are needed. Banner Health Foundation would not be where it is today without the time and talents of Sharon Harper. The amount of effort she has personally committed to Banner Health demonstrates her passion for the company, and for the welfare of our community. Sharon, thank you for your service! 4 | B A N N E R H E A LT H . O R G Ronald McDonald House to Open on Campus of Cardon Children’s The Valley Medical Center of the Sun will be home to a third Ronald McDonald House, and the first in the East Valley, when a former health care facility on the campus of Cardon Children’s Medical Center in Mesa is converted into a 10,255 square foot homeaway-from home. With generous support from organizations willing to invest in the meaning of “home,” patients and families of Cardon Children’s soon won’t have to travel far to find the comfort, convenience and security of home during treatment. Approximately $900,000 has been raised for the project, including a generous $500,000 gift from the Gila River Indian Community. Another $1.2 million must be raised before renovations begin. The 17 mile distance between Cardon Children’s Medical Center and the nearest Ronald McDonald House might not seem far, but for a family with a child in the hospital, the distance is frequently too much. The time spent during the 17 mile drive is time that could be spent together as a family. Many families with children receiving treatment in East Valley decline to stay at the Ronald McDonald House in order to stay close to their children. The new House will allow families to stay at a “home-away-from-home” in the East Valley without sacrificing time away from their sick children. The new facilty will feature 16 bedrooms, including 3 apartments with kitchens for families with children with suppressed immune systems; a community kitchen and dining room; play area for children and outdoor area for adults. “Having a Ronald McDonald House at Cardon Children’s Medical Center will provide families not only a level of safety and comfort at an incredibly difficult time in their lives but also will ease some of the stress they’re experiencing by being with other families facing similar challenges,” said Cardon Children’s Medical Chief Executive Officer Rhonda Anderson. “The partnership between Ronald McDonald House and Cardon Children’s Medical Center will be vital in the healing process for the children and their families.” Terri Enos, Cheryl Pablo, Councilwoman Monica Antone and Councilman Dale Enos represent Gila River Indian Community at a press conference to announce plans for a Ronald McDonald House on the campus of Cardon Children’s Medical Center in Mesa, AZ Learn how you can help give hospitalized children and their families the gifts of time and togetherness by contacting Banner Health Foundation at 602-747-4483. O R G Saying u o Y k Than To Our Donors The Sanctuary on Camelback Mountain provided a beautiful setting for the 2013 Banner Benefactors reception. This annual event brings together our generous Benefactors, senior leadership from across Banner Health and valued community supporters for an evening of recognition and thanks. Andy Kramer Petersen, President and CEO of Banner Health Foundation, welcomed guests and expressed gratitude for their generosity and support of Banner’s mission to make a difference in people’s lives through excellent patient care. Banner Health Foundation board member, Steve Rizley, also addressed attendees and shared the many reasons he is such a passionate advocate of the organization. The evening included the reading of a letter from the family of a former Banner Health patient, expressing gratitude for the music therapy program. Music therapy programs areas funded through philanthropic gifts and often provide peace and comfort during otherwise difficult times. It illustrated the true difference we can make in the lives of our patients through the support and generosity of our community. The reception was enjoyed by all and we look forward to seeing everyone again in 2014! Adkerson paired with honorary campaign chair and NFL player Larry Fitzgerald to raise awareness among employees of the great work taking place at Banner MD Anderson Cancer Center. The response was staggering. More than 200 employees made a donation to support the Cancer Has Met Its Match campaign, totaling close to $275,000. This campaign marks one of numerous ways Freeport-McMoRan has become an invaluable community partner to Banner Health. Celebrates One-Year Anniversary James M. Cox Foundation announces $5 million gift to fund Center for Cancer Prevention and Integrative Oncology THE BANNER MD ANDERSON Cancer Center opened its doors on September 26, 2011, marking a genuine evolution in Arizona’s capacity to diagnose and treat cancer patients. The lantern of hope - a four-story illuminated metal structure symbolizing hope and healing - is lit each night and has already greeted thousands of patients and visitors. Cancer care, treatment and prevention require much more than a new facility. They require the latest medical technologies; expansive treatment and support programs; and staffing capable of delivering the excellence in patient care for which Banner is so well known. Banner MD Anderson’s promise is to deliver customized, comprehensive and compassionate care for every patient. While Banner Health funded the cost of bricks and mortar for the state-of-the-art facility at US-60 and Higley Road, many essential elements of the project must be funded by the generosity of those who support Banner’s mission to make a difference in people’s lives through excellent patient care. The Cancer Has Met Its Match campaign was launched in 2010 with a goal of raising $20 million to fund screening and prevention services, patient and family support programs, research and much more is funded through charitable gifts. Just in time to celebrate the one-year anniversary of Banner MD Anderson, the James M. Cox Family Foundation announced a $5 million gift to fund the creation of a Center for Cancer Prevention and Integrative Oncology. The Center will serve people who have cancer, cancer survivors and the general public, whether they are at risk of cancer or seeking to decrease their risk. The Center is an integral part of the MD Anderson treatment model, which addresses the global impact of cancer on people and their families. The Center will include: integrative oncology, individualized prevention, screening and diagnosis programs, palliative care and rehabilitation and community outreach programs. As the Vice President of Community Relations for Republic Media, the company behind The Arizona Republic and 12 News, Gene has been an active member of the philanthropic community for years. In addition to directing corporate and foundation contributions, he has served on countless boards and commissions and received many well-deserved awards for his commitment to our community. Gene moved to Arizona in the fourth grade from New York, and has been here ever since. A graduate of ASU, he is deeply invested in the community and his family. His skill set, connections, and personality have proven a valuable asset for the Banner Alzheimer’s Foundation (BAF) board of directors. Gene’s professional relationship with Banner Health extends back before the merger between Samaritan and Lutheran Health Systems. The mission of Banner Health, to make a difference in people's lives through excellent patient care, has always fallen in line with the goals of The Arizona Republic, to help strengthen and meet the needs of the Phoenix community. Gene has helped bridge the connection between the two organizations. His personal involvement with Banner, however, has been fairly recent. When his father was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease, Gene began his journey as a caregiver for a Banner Alzheimer’s Institute (BAI) patient. This personal experience led to Gene’s desire to become a part of the work being done at BAI, which is how he came to be a member of the BAF board. As his father’s caregiver, Gene has experienced firsthand the 10 | B A N N E R H E A L T H . O R G visionary standard of care offered at Banner Alzheimer’s Institute. The three main focus areas of BAI - research, care, and collaboration are especially valuable to him for personal reasons. As the father of three daughters and with a long family history of Alzheimer’s, Gene recognizes the importance of Alzheimer’s research for protecting the future. The critical research being done at BAI gives him hope for the next generation. The comprehensive patient care and family outreach programs have also personally touched his life. “In the midst of this awful, awful disease, the family resources and care of Banner Alzheimer’s Institute has been a bright spot,” says Gene. Diagnosis and care take place at the same facility, eliminating the “either/or” situation of other hospitals. BAI’s comprehensive model of care is what makes it a national model. “They look toward the future while making life better for those affected by Alzheimer’s now.” With the launch of The BAI Breakthrough campaign this past summer, Gene became involved as co-chair of the corporations and foundations committee. “I am honored and humbled to help with the campaign. I have chaired other boards before, but the personal connection with BAI makes this work that much more important,” says Gene. Gene shares BAI’s dream for a future without Alzheimer’s. With an award winning staff, a nationally acclaimed model of care, and devotion to prevention research, Gene believes BAI is our greatest hope for ending Alzheimer’s before it starts, and saving the next generation before it’s lost. School-Based Health Centers Receive Support from CVS Caremark Charitable Trust Representatives from CVS Caremark Charitable Trust present a check for $25,000 to leaders of Cardon Children’s Medical Center in support of Banner’s School-Based Health Centers program. Banner Health Foundation received a $25,000 grant from the CVS Caremark Charitable Trust to help fund Banner Health’s School-Based Health Centers program. Conveniently located on school campuses, Banner Health has School-Based Health Centers that operate like a regular doctor's office. In 2012, Banner Health professionals provided free care to more than 2,500 children. Children visit the centers for concerns ranging from earaches to neurological conditions. In addition, nurse practitioners conduct physicals for camps or sports, provide routine check-ups and help children and families learn about common health conditions and where they can find additional resources. CVS Caremark Charitable Trust is the private foundation created by CVS Caremark Corporation, whose purpose is to help people on their path to better health by providing funding for health care, education and community involvement initiatives. BHHS Legacy Foundation For years, the BHHS Legacy Foundation has been an invaluable partner for Banner Health Foundation, supporting many of its fundraising efforts. A charitable nonprofit that supports improved health care for Arizonans, BHHS Legacy Foundation is heavily involved with community outreach programs and patient care services. Since 2006, the foundation has generously given nearly $600,000 to help Banner in its efforts to build stronger, healthier communities. In particular, BHHS Legacy Foundation provides funding support for Banner’s School-Based Health Centers, which provides free primary health services to thousands of medically underserved children. They also sponsor the distribution of free children’s bicycle helmets at the annual Banner Community Health and Safety Fair. In addition, the foundation supports the Family and Community Services program at Banner Alzheimer’s Institute, partnering with BAI to help hundreds of families understand and access care options, and participate in free memory screening events. Banner School-Based Health Centers provide primary health care services to an estimated 2,500 school children a year. Many of these children come from “working poor” families that do not qualify for government assisted health insurance, yet cannot affort private coverage. This year, we were excited to announce that Banner Health would begin offering an ongoing mobile health unit to travel to schools throughout the Valley each week to provide primary care for thousands of uninsured and underinsured children. The new service began in January. The “Banner Children’s Healthmobile” is a licensed outpatient treatment center that will operate just like a mobile doctor’s office, offering children up to 21 years of age treatment for health problems, physicals for camp or sports, and routine annual check-ups. 58th Annual Candlelight Capers Ball benefits Neurosciences Programs at Banner Good Samaritan The 58th annual Candlelight Capers Ball was held December 1, 2012 at the luxurious Arizona Biltmore Resort & Spa. The signature fundraising event for Banner Good Samaritan Medical Center, this black-tie affair raised funds in support of the Neurosciences Program, which has been recognized as a national leader in the treatment and care of stroke, Parkinson’s disease, Lou Gehrig’s disease (ALS), spinal cord injury and numerous other neurological conditions. The program spans more than three decades of service in Arizona and Banner Good Samaritan Specialists from Neurology, Neurosurgery, Medical Imaging, Rehabilitation, Trauma Surgery and Radiation Oncology work together to provide stateof-the-art care. In addition, Banner Good Samaritan's drive to explore and provide new treatment options has made it a pioneer in neuroscience research. Highlights of the program include a stroke center that is nationally recognized for its excellent care and treatments; Neuroscience Clinics which provide care for patients with multiple sclerosis, ALS, and Parkinson’s disease; Banner Neuro Wellness, a stateof-the-art wellness center for individuals and families who are affected by Parkinson’s disease and other neurological conditions; and an Epilepsy and Seizure Disorder clinic designed to help epilepsy patients live easier lives by using state-of-art equipment to continued on page 14 make an accurate diagnosis. O R G Treated With Dignity L osing a loved one is never easy. It’s even harder when you begin to “lose” them long before they actually pass away. Such is the cruel reality of Alzheimer’s disease. It is a devastating, debilitating and incurable disease. Alzheimer's is the most common cause of dementia. The chemistry and structure of the brain of a person with Alzheimer's changes and his or her brain cells die prematurely. Its symptoms develop slowly, although researchers now believe that the actual neurological damage begins occurring years, if not decades, before problems with memory, thinking and behavior begin. Those symptoms are progressive and ultimately rob the individual of mental and physical function. So, when the Teets’ family learned their beloved husband and father, John, was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s, they were shocked and fearful. The family “rock,” John Teets was known for being a brilliant but tough businessman. He was best known for helming Greyhound/Dial for 16 years, a once-massive conglomerate owning numerous subsidiaries in addition to the nation's largest bus service. He also helped bring the Diamondbacks team to Arizona. His family, naturally, saw the softer side of John. They were committed to protecting his integrity and dignity, while also keeping his confidence up as the disease progressed. Nancy Teets, his wife of 46 years, and daughter, Heidi, were with John through every step of his battle with Alzheimer’s. But they weren’t alone. A fortuitous connection led the family to Banner Alzheimer’s Institute (BAI) and Dr. Pierre Tariot. Nancy recalls Dr. Tariot spending two quality hours with John and their family during their first visit to BAI. The second visit was almost identical. “I could have cried from relief at how much interest Dr. Tariot took in John,” remembers Nancy. “He was so respectful and made John’s dignity a priority. The confidentiality and integrity he showed was amazing.” Dr. Tariot developed a treatment plan that was shared with John and the entire Teets family. Treatment plans include prescription therapies and may also include non-prescription therapies such as support and education, which are coordinated by BAI’s Family and Community Services team. Enter Jan Dougherty. “John got the best, most respectful care, and I got the best training,” says Nancy. “Pierre brought in Jan Dougherty, director of family and community services, and it was a done deal – signed, sealed and delivered.” “Jan was helping me and was concerned with me,” Nancy remembers, still incredulous at the quality of care they received at BAI. Nancy even speaks of a day when Dr. Tariot and Jan both paid a visit to John at home. “They “I could have cried from relief at how much interest Dr. Tariot took in John,” remembers Nancy. “He was so respectful and made John’s dignity a priority. The confidentiality and integrity he showed was amazing.” continued on page 22 MAG NOLIA S ( M AGNOLI ACEAE) C ARRY T HE MEAN I N G OF DI GN I T Y FRIENDS SPRING 2013 | 21 “We need to really appreciate what we have in Arizona with Banner Alzheimer’s Institute,” she says. “The prevention efforts being led by Dr. Tariot and Dr. Reiman are phenomenal.” continued from page 21 John Teets 22 | B A N N E R H E A L T H . O R G made him feel so great and so important,” she says. “Dr. Tariot’s name was golden to John.” Heidi is equally appreciative of the care her father and their family received. Although the stigma is lessening, Heidi recalls that even 10 years ago people didn’t talk about Alzheimer’s. “It was the “A” word,” she says. “As a result, we knew so little when dad was first diagnosed. We knew there wasn’t a cure and we knew it affects the brain, but so much was unknown.” Heidi remembers the comfort she felt as Jan Dougherty walked her and her mother through what to expect as John’s struggle with Alzheimer’s progressed. “Jan helped us maintain dad’s quality of life.” “And she always gave us something we could do,” Nancy adds. “There was always hope at our appointments.” Because John wanted to be able to do as much for himself as possible, Jan helped provide tips to make that happen – things like keeping John on a routine and making lists. “These things are just the tip of the iceberg,” says Heidi. “What BAI and Jan and Dr. Tariot did to help my dad and my family is immeasurable.” After a long battle with the disease, John passed away from complications related to Alzheimer’s on August 5, 2011, leaving behind Nancy and Heidi, as well as three other daughters and five grandchildren. Although the passing of their beloved patriarch is still difficult to think about, Nancy and Heidi have turned their pain into passionate advocacy for the prevention research and model of care at Banner Alzheimer’s Institute. “People don’t understand how devastating this disease is,” says Heidi. “Although the experience is different for everyone, we should all be focused on preventing Alzheimer’s from impacting another generation.” Nancy agrees wholeheartedly with her daughter. “We need to really appreciate what we have in Arizona with Banner Alzheimer’s Institute,” she says. “The prevention efforts being led by Dr. Tariot and Dr. [Eric] Reiman are phenomenal. I have a BAI file – I clip newspaper stories.” Heidi recently joined the board of Banner Alzheimer’s Foundation, which is leading a $40 million campaign called The BAI Breakthrough. The campaign will fund research and care at Banner Alzheimer’s Institute. Nancy has also assisted with the campaign, and the Teets’ family recently made a gift to the campaign in John’s honor. This is what Heidi believes her dad would want. “He would appreciate the tenacity of those trying to find a cure.” FENNEL ( F OE NICU L U M) C ARRI ES T HE M EAN I N G OF ST REN GT H ROS ES ( ROS A) C ARRY T HE M EAN IN G OF LOVE An Unparalleled Model of Care The Issue According to the Alzheimer’s Association, 5.4 million Americans are living with Alzheimer’s disease today. By 2030, that number could exceed 7.7 million. Alzheimer’s disease is a debilitating brain disease that takes a tremendous physical, emotional and financial toll on both individuals and families. Championing a New Model of Care In the face of a diagnosis like Alzheimer’s disease, individuals and families often feel scared and lost – until they come to Banner Alzheimer’s Institute (BAI). Physicians, nurses and social workers at the Stead Family Memory Clinic at BAI address medical and nonmedical needs through an integrated, team approach. This model of care encompasses financial and legal concerns, caregiver stress and quality of life. It offers support groups as well as innovative, community-based programs for individuals diagnosed with Alzheimer’s. Once physicians make a diagnosis, they explain the findings and develop a treatment plan that is shared with the patient, family/caregivers and the referring physician. Treatment plans include prescription therapies and may also include non-prescription therapies such as support and education, which are coordinated by our Family and Community Services team. In addition to the comprehensive model of care provided through the Stead Family Memory Clinic, the Banner Alzheimer’s Institute team reaches into the community to provide memory screening, memory training programs, and community lectures. FRIENDS SPRING 2013 | 23 Meryl Comer & Geoffrey Beene Meryl Comer, President of the Geoffrey Beene Gives Back Alzheimer’s Initiative, facilitates a discussion about the disease and ongoing prevention and education efforts. 24 | B A N N E R H E A L T H . O R G Meryl Comer is an Emmy Awardwinning broadcast journalist who, for 18 years, hosted It's Your Business, a nationally syndicated panel program, and served as vice president of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce from 1986-1997. She has interviewed four U.S. Presidents, five heads of state, over 600 Congressional and elected officials, hundreds of Fortune 500 CEO’s as well as 52 laureates to the Business Hall of Fame. Despite these impressive professional accomplishments, nothing has taught Meryl more about life, or made her more fearless, than her husband’s battle with Alzheimer’s disease. Meryl had to leave her career in her prime to care for her husband, a successful doctor who was diagnosed at age 58 and had to leave his work behind, as well. Then, five years ago, Meryl’s mother was also diagnosed with the devastating disease. It would seem that serving as case worker, team leader, cook and caregiver for the past 18 years would leave little time for anything else, but Meryl quickly became an advocate – a voice for a disease that impacts millions, but isn’t often discussed. “Twenty years ago Alzheimer’s disease was steeped in mystique,” she says. “As a reporter, I went everywhere looking for information and answers and no one wanted to take responsibility. No one was telling the truth and that frustration is what made me become an advocate.” Alzheimer’s patients and their loved ones sometimes enter a state of denial, trying to escape the disease. Those who choose to face it head on often enter deeper into it to try to make a difference, as is the case with Meryl, who is trying to create a wake-up call for this generation and the next. “Once you see this disease you are changed forever. I do not want my son caring for me the way I care for my husband,” she emphasizes. “I find this disease unacceptable and we need our children and grandchildren to feel the same way.” Meryl has reason to be concerned. According to the Alzheimer’s Association, more than 5 million seniors in the U.S. have Alzheimer’s, a figure that is expected to grow to 6.7 million by 2025. In terms of health care expenses and lost wages of both patients and Clockwise from top left: Heidi Teets & Carrie Martz. Ed White, Michelle & Steve Schwanz. Ed WHite, Marcus & Sonja Waddell. And these figures don’t even begin to measure the physical and emotional toll of the disease. In addition to finding opportunities to share her story through various media channels, Meryl currently serves as the President of the Geoffrey Beene Gives Back® Alzheimer's Initiative, a program of the Geoffrey Beene Foundation. One hundred percent of net profits from Geoffrey Beene, LLC are donated to philanthropic causes that support innovative research with cutting edge focus on signature solutions to a host of medical, educational and societal issues. The Geoffrey Beene Gives Back® Alzheimer’s Initiative creates and supports educational campaigns to build public awareness and to expose the impact of the Alzheimer’s epidemic on the nation's healthcare systems. The Geoffrey Beene Gives Back® Alzheimer’s Initiative is supported solely by the Geoffrey Beene brand and the Geoffrey Beene Foundation. Contributions in excess of $4.7 million have been made to support groundbreaking awareness programs and next generation research in early diagnostics. The Geoffrey Beene Gives Back® Alzheimer's Initiative is providing catalyst funding for the Alzheimer's Prevention Registry – developed in collaboration with the Banner Alzheimer's Institute – the first online, Alzheimer's disease national Prevention Registry created specifically to recruit pre-symptomatic, high-risk adults, self-trackers and early adopters of brain health baseline markers. 26 | B A N N E R H E A L T H . O R G “Alzheimer’s is the most important public health crisis facing America. Alzheimer’s will never get the attention we need it to without reaching people who aren’t already dealing with it and educating them.” Meryl’s research and advocacy efforts are what led her to a relationship with Banner Alzheimer’s Institute and its Executive Director, Eric Reiman, MD. In fact, in her tenure with the Geoffrey Beene Foundation, Meryl created the Rock Stars of Science ™ program, and Dr. Reiman was named one of the “rock stars” in 2010. “Everyone knows a rock star, but no one knows a scientist, so I turned scientists into rock stars,” says Meryl. “My goal was to make scientists ‘human’ in order to engage the next generation.” Meryl has become an amazing ambassador for both the groundbreaking prevention research led by Dr. Reiman, as well as the model of care provided to patients at the Institute. “Alzheimer’s disease is a little less of a mystery than it was 20 years ago,” she says, “but what has not improved is that doctors often hand you the devastating diagnosis and then you’re on your own. No one explains the implications of the disease. This is not the case at Banner Alzheimer’s Institute and their model must be replicated.” Banner Alzheimer’s Institute addresses the medical and nonmedical needs of patients and their caregivers through an integrated, team approach. Specialty physicians, nurses and social workers cover a variety of issues including financial and legal concerns, caregiver stress and quality of life. The Geoffrey Beene Foundation Alzheimer’s Initiative is currently a proud partner of the Alzheimer’s Prevention Registry, which was created by Banner Alzheimer's Institute and its community and scientific partners The Registry consists of people who are passionate about combatting the disease. They see Alzheimer's as a very significant health issue for the nation and believe more must be done to stop it - starting right now. WISP Women Inspiring Scientific Progress Through education and activity, Women Inspiring Scientific Progress (WISP) seeks to engage more women as advocates on behalf of Banner Alzheimer’s Institute, empowering them to influence resource development for Alzheimer’s prevention, research and care. The inaugural WISP event was held last Fall at the Sanctuary Resort. A special brain-healthy menu was created and prepared by renowned Chef Beau MacMillan. The program was moderated by Meryl Comer, President of the Geoffrey Beene Foundation Alzheimer’s Initiative. Meryl led a dynamic panel discussion featuring Pierre Tariot, MD, Director of Banner Alzheimer’s Institute, George Vradenburg, Geoffrey Beene Foundation, Trish Vradenburg, Vradenburg Foundation, and Peggy Mullan, CEO of Beatitudes. The panel covered the multiple facets of Alzheimer’s disease that impact our lives and the economy, with the discussion centered on research, public policy and the cost of care. Similarly, the focus at Banner Alzheimer’s Institute is three-fold: form scientific collaborations with institutions from around the world; lead revolutionary studies in Alzheimer’s detection, treatment and prevention, and perpetuate an unparalleled model of care for patients and caregivers. Reiman, MD, Executive Director of Banner Alzheimer’s Institute. Dr. Reiman was one of three researchers to receive the Potamkin Prize, which honors researchers for their work in helping to advance the understanding of Pick’s disease, Alzheimer’s disease and related disorders. The $100,000 prize is an internationally recognized tribute for advancing dementia research. Since its founding 15 years ago, the Potamkin Prize has emerged as one of the most notable awards in international medicine. It is increasingly seen as a predictor of future Nobel Prize winners. Reiman was awarded for his efforts to characterize some of the earliest brain changes associated with the predisposition to Alzheimer’s disease, accelerate the evaluation of promising prevention therapies and help establish the Alzheimer’s Prevention Initiative (API). API is an international collaborative formed by Banner Alzheimer’s Institute and several scientific and community partners to launch a new era of Alzheimer's prevention research. API will begin its first prevention trial in early-onset Alzheimer's mutation carriers this year. Reiman is internationally recognized for his contributions to the fields of brain imaging, behavioral neurosciences and the study of Alzheimer’s before the onset of symptoms. He is the author of more than 250 research publications and serves as principal investigator for research grants from leading funders such as the National Institutes of Health. He is well known for his leadership of the Arizona Alzheimer’s Consortium, the nation’s leading statewide program in Alzheimer’s disease research. Dr. Pierre Tariot named Arizona Geriatrician of the Year Each year, the Arizona Geriatrics Society recognizes and honors an exemplary Arizona physician who has devoted his or her professional life to the care of the elderly or has made significant contributions to geriatric medicine. Pierre N. Tariot, MD, Director of Banner Alzheimer’s Institute (BAI) was proud to be named Geriatrician of the Year for 2012. Dr. Tariot accepted the award on behalf of the entire at BAI staff. It is because of the great team, he said, that he is able to provide the right kind of care for people impacted by Alzheimer’s. In particular, Dr. Tariot was recognized for his focused care for patients with dementia, along with their families. The nomination also noted Dr. Tariot's leadership in research on diagnosis and treatment of dementias and his work in the international effort to discover paths to prevent dementia - the Alzheimer's Prevention Initiative. Those who nominated Dr. Tariot said that as Director of BAI, "He embodies the core principle of geriatrics care by supporting a multi-disciplinary approach to healing. He recognizes that any physician can go only so far without the collaboration and assistance of an entire team." Congratulations, Dr. Tariot! 28 | B A N N E R H E A L T H . O R G Alzheimer’s Prevention Initiative A lzheimer’s is a devastating, debilitating disease that currently impacts over 5.2 million Americans. By 2030 that number could exceed 7.7 million. Fueled by this knowledge and a mission to end Alzheimer’s disease without losing another generation, Banner Alzheimer’s Institute is leading an international collaborative to launch a new era of preventive research. The Alzheimer’s Prevention Initiative (API) brings together researchers, physicians, pharmaceutical companies, and regulatory agency representatives from the United States and other countries to evaluate the most promising prevention therapies as rapidly as possible. At the core will be treatment trials and biomarker studies. API will conduct the first-ever prevention trial in healthy individuals with a high risk for this disease based on their genetic background. This trial will span two countries and is designed to determine whether the drug can reduce participants’ chances of developing the disease’s disabling and irreversible symptoms. Researchers believe that the neurological damage associated with Alzheimer’s occurs years before an individual’s problems with memory and behavior begin. Focusing on this earliest stage of the disease holds the greatest hope for stopping Alzheimer’s before it starts. The $100 million trial is a collaboration between the National Institutes of Health (NIH), Banner Alzheimer's Institute (BAI), the University of Antioquia in Colombia and industry partner Genentech. O R G Banner Alzheimer’s Institute (BAI) has been a beacon of hope for Alzheimer’s research and a nationally recognized patient care provider since its opening in 2006. BAI’s mission to end Alzheimer’s disease before losing another generation has been its foundation. As the philanthropic resource for BAI, Banner Alzheimer’s Foundation launched The BAI Breakthrough in 2012. Funds from this $40 million campaign will support cutting-edge studies aimed at treating and preventing the disease, state-of-theart brain imaging and an unparalleled model of patient and family care. A portion of the campaign funds will help fund the groundbreaking research that BAI announced in collaboration with the National Institutes of Health and others. This prevention trial, which spans two countries, will test an amyloid immunization therapy and is the first ever trial conducted with cognitively healthy individuals who are certain to develop Alzheimer’s because of their genetic history. The campaign’s remaining funds will support additional studies of both the preclinical and symptomatic stages of the disease; critical technology for a new 18,000-square-foot imaging center; and expansion of BAI’s comprehensive model of care to serve as the standard nationwide. The BAI Breakthrough officially launched in June 2012 with a $6 million gift from the Stead Family Foundation. Mary Joy and Jerre Stead are long-time supporters of BAI and chairs of the campaign’s leadership cabinet. Jerre is also chairman of the BAF board. “We absolutely believe prevention of Alzheimer’s will become a reality through BAI’s research efforts,” Jerre Stead says. “Yet, not only is BAI working on behalf of future generations, it is taking care of individuals and families dealing right now with the impact of this devastating disease.
