THE OTHER PINOCCHIO
Once upon a time there was a wooden boy whom a fairy transformed into a
real boy as a reward for his kindness. His name was Pinocchio!
Not much time ago, another boy emerged into this wonderful world of fairy
tales. He was a real boy, flesh and blood, whom a fairy changed into a wooden boy as
a punishment for all the bad things he had done. We’ll call him the other Pinocchio…
And his story goes like this:
Pinocchio was a nine-year-old boy who lived with his grandfather, Geppetto in
Calimanesti. He wasn’t that kind of good boy that any parents would want their
children to be. On the contrary, he was rude, mean and showing no caring nature. He
wouldn’t help anyone in need, people or animals; he wouldn’t doa good deed.
So, one day, a fairy appeared and said: “For all the bad things that
you’ve done so far, I’ll punish you and change you in a wooden boy. If this doesn’t
teach you anything and if you continue with your bad behavior, more bad things will
happen to you in return. But if you change, you’ll be again that real boy that you used
to be.”
And so the boy was transformed into a wooden boy. To come back again to his
original form he will have to behave himself, as the fairy said. He knew that very well.
But, will he succeed?
Old habits die hard, as the old saying goes. And it soon turned out that it was a
bit difficult for him to change his bad behavior. So, he continued behaving the same
way he used to: being rude, mean and telling lies. But when this happened, something
extraordinary happened too. His nose grew very long.
“What a big nose I have!” he said to himself.
He didn’t like this new nose at all.
“It doesn’t fit my face!”, he thought. “What shall I do?”
He decided to cut his nose short. And he asked Geppetto, his grandfather, to
do that for him.
1
Geppetto cut his nose down to size and the extra part of the nose dropped on
the ground. And from that piece of wood a big tree emerged. A beautiful tree on the
side of the road! And what is more, the tree was magic!
Being emerged from the boy’s nose, it was linked to the boy in a special way.
And everything that the tree felt, the boy felt too.
Pinocchio didn’t know that, but he was soon going to find out. Because, you
see, just like our boy, there were others too, boys and girls, who would hit the tree
and break its branches when passing by, never once thinking of the harm they were
doing.
Feeling all the pain the tree could feel, Pinocchio started to protect the tree.
And when the children passed the tree and wanted to break its branches, he would
say:
“Don’t do that! Don’t hurt the tree! It can feel the pain just as you could feel it if
anyone hit you! Be nice to the tree. He didn’t do anything bad to you.”
And while he was saying that, an image appeared into his mind. It was the
image of a boy who used to do all those bad things that his friends were doing now.
And he felt ashamed, for that boy was him….Pinocchio!
A tear was running down his face….He was human again!

ALICE IN WONDERLAND
Alice goes out for a walk in the garden. After some time, she feels tired. She
sits under a tree in the garden. Then she falls asleep. She is in such a deep sleep thaat
she is as if n a different world. As if a noise is calling Alice deeply. Alice opens her eyes.
This calling noise is not a person different from her mother. She stands up where she
sleeps and looks for the sound. She says “Yes, mummy?”.
Alice goes towards her house. She looks inside the house at the door and she
can’t believe in her eyes. Here is an extraordinary nice place. There are speaking
animals, flowers and strange people inside. She is shocked. Then, she starts to walk
around the forest. She sees a strange house. There ara strange people around a table,
speaking rabbits and a huge cat in the house. They invite Alice inside. They eat meal
together with great enjoy. Alice leaves them and goes out. Near the house, there is a
river. She plays here for a while. She imagines different things.
Alice adapts these strange people and starts to play with them. They play hide
and seek, blind man’s bluff and other games. Time goes so quickly that they finish a
game and start another. Alice is in such a good mood that she doesn’t even know
these huge people’s names. She, then, learns their names and the fact that they are
twins at the end.
Alice is so tired that she wants to rest and drink a cup of tea. She drinks it. She
suggest her friends to drink tea and they drink, too. They thank her.
In this strong a forest, Alice is spending very good time with different trees
that are like eagles, with speaking rabbits, and strange people taht she has never seen
before.
She makes crows from beatiful flowers and wears them on her head and also
gives them to her friends. She, also, sings a song sincerely. They clap her. Alice sits on
a tree which is different like a throne for a while.
3
Again, she contiunes walking around the forest. She seems someone coming
towards her. Here is a different place where there are huge mushroom and people in
strange clothes. This is the person with different hair and eyes, who says he is the
prince of here. He asks Alice: “What are you doing friends.”
She asks: “What are you doing here?”
He answers: “I am Prince Martin. I live here. How did you find this forest?”.
She sees a big door. See sees roses resembling humans. Alice chats with these
roses for a while. Then she realizes that she is late and she must go. She says goodbye
to her friends and leaves there. Alice goes back where she comes. She feels very
happy and lucky herself.

BALD MAN AND NASRETTIN HODJA
“Keloğlan look, I have a treasure map. I am alone, and I’ve already got old.
That’s why I couldn’t look for the treasure. I used to work at Zenginoğlu’s mansion.
Zenginoğlu gave me this map. Let me have the two chickens, have the map, look for
and find the treasure, be happy all your life” he said. Keloğlan believed the man, and
agreed. Keloğlan returned home in the late afternoon.
His mother shouted:
“Oh my stupid son! Can two chickens be bartered for this piece of paper? You were
meant to buy gas and salt after selling the chickens. You have been cheated. Sit in the
dark, eat the meals without any salt and make up your mind”. Keloğlan didn’t care, he
was only thinking about the treasure. He passed the night in difficulty and got up very
early.
Keloğlan said:
“Mother, I am going to look for the treasure. I prepared food for winter. Let there be
no gas; you will go to bed early in the evenings. Let there be salt; you will get it from
the neighbour. If I find the treasure, I will make you live like a sultan ”. He kissed his
mother’s hand. Seeing that Keloğlan was determined, his mother desperately changed
her mind. She saw Keloğlan off saying “Goodbye, Keloğlan. I hope you find the
treasure”
Keloğlan crossed mountains and hills, looking for days until finally he found the
well on the map. The treasure was meant to be in this well. The stone he threw into
the well made a sound like BANG. Keloğlan understood that there was no water in the
well. However, three people who had gene down the well in his village and weren’t
able to come out last year come to his mind. “I have a rope, which I brought with me
from the village. He started worrying - What if I tie the rope to the edge of the well
and go down; but then die like them because of the poisonous smoke in the well?
That will be a bad state - firstly I need a helper who is manly, trustworthy and
who is able to remove the danger in the well. Nasreddin Hodja came to mind while
thinking where it might be possible to find somebody like this, and he said “Ok”, the
Hodja will find a way to resolve this matter.”
5
After a long journey he eventually arrived in Akşehir. There he asked to be shown
Nasreddin Hodja’s house. He knocked on the door and Nasreddin Hodja opened it. He
said “You are most welcome, my son”, “I am Nasreddin Hodja. Would you like
something?”
“My hodja, I am called Keloğlan in my village. I would like your help for an important
matter. I would be very happy if you would be so kind as to listen to me.” Hodja
welcomed Keloğlan into his house. Keloğlan told him how he had got the treasure
map; he told him that he said goodbye to his mother and left the village, had found
the well on the map, he told himwhy he hadn’t been able to go down the well. He
concluded his remarks by saying - if we find the treasure, we will share it fifty – fifty,
my Hodja. What do you say?
Nasreddin Hodja replied:
“Since there is not enough current, this poisonous air gathers in the wells which
haven’t been used for a long time and into which poisonous air leaks from the layers
of earth around them. If someone goes down into these wells, they will poison and kill
the person. As you have told me, the depth of the well had been nearly 9 or 10 metres.
6
It is too tiring and troublesome to dig and broaden the hole around the well, we can’t
accomplish that. If we try to find a helper, it will spread from ear to ear, and the public
will gather at the well. We must find another way Keloğlan. Stay with us for a couple
of days as my guest, and I will think and find a suitable way.”
Nasreddin Hodja made plans during the following two days, and drew up drafts. He
brought the plans to the smith. He admonished him to give the equipments that he
had; to make those he didn’t have according to the drawings. The equipment was
ready in a week. He had bought a cart which two donkeys pulled. He put the
equipments, and necessities like food and drink in the car. He said goodbye to his wife
and mounted his donkey. Hodja with his donkey in the front, and Keloğlan in the cart
at the back, set off. After a troublesome journey lasting for days, they reached the well
in which the treasure was.
7
Hodja scrutinized the well. He took down the big bellows, which they had got the
smith to make, next to the well with Keloğlan. They dangled one of the tips of a pipe,
which was nearly 10 centimetres wide, into the bottom of the well. They attached the
other tip to the bellows. They started to pump the bellows. The still and poisonous air which had accumulated for years - started to scatter, rise slowly and get out of the
well from the effect of the fresh and pressurized air. The rate of poisonous air in the
well, too.
On the third day they come to the conclusion that the well had been cleaned. Just to
make sure, Nasreddin Hodja put a cat, which he had brought in the cart, into a sack.
After tying up the sack with a rope, he lowered it into the bottom of the well. He saw
that the cat was alive and kicking after pulling it back two hours later.
Tying the rope around his waist, Keloğlan had gone down the well. He took out the
stone mentioned on the map. After digging the earth under the stone, he found the
chest. He tied up the chest with the other rope near him and called out to Hodja to
pull him. When Keloğlan had come out of the well, they pulled up the chest with
Hodja.
8
When they broke its lock and opened the chest, to their surprise they saw it was full
of bright and shiny gold! They felt very happy. They shared the gold immediately. The
next day, Nasreddin Hodja set off to Akşehir on his donkey; and Keloğlan set off to his
village in the cart.
Keloğlan got a legendary mansion built in his village. He hired maids and menservants.
He bought fields, vineyards, gardens. He started to live like a sultan with his mother.
The Sultan heard about Keloğlan’s extraordinary wealth. When he was out hunting
one day, he stopped by Keloğlan’s mansion. Keloğlan showed respect for the Sultan,
and treated him in the best way.
The Sultan, who was very pleased with this close interest, invited Keloğlan to his
palace for the festival, which was going to be celebrated the following month.
Keloğlan went to the palace by coach and with manservants on the festival day. He
met the Sultan’s extremely beautiful daughter, Violet, and fell in love. Violet loved
Keloğlan at first sight and didn’t want him to leave . After the festival entertainments
had finished, Keloğlan returned to his mansion. He told his mother that he had fallen in
love with Sultan Violet at first sight and wouldn’t be able to live without her.
9
They thought it over carefully and they decided to ask the Sultan’s consent to marry
Violet. Later he went with his mother to ask the Sultan if he could marry his daughter.
The Sultan accepted Violet’s marrying Keloğlan. Keloğlan returned to his mansion and
started the wedding preparations. On the way he had sent messengers to Nasreddin
Hodja to invite him to his wedding.
After Nasreddin Hodja had returned to Akşehir with his share, he clothed the poor
and the orphans, and spent most of his money on good deeds. And at the same time
he heard from his friends’ conversation and from the travellers passing by that
Keloğlan had got a mansion built in his village, had hired menservants, had bought
fields and started to live like a sultan, and he felt happy about the things he heard.
When he heard about Keloğlan’s wedding invitation and that he was going to marry
Sultan Violet, he regained a lot of his good humour. He started the preparations to go
to the wedding. He bought carpets, furs, and silk cloths. He bought jewellery like
earrings and a necklace for Violet.
He also bought two coaches, which four horses would puul, and he also hired two
menservants. He wore his most valuable clothes and his showiest fur. He set out with
his wife a couple of days before the wedding. The Hodja arrived at the palace with his
entourage, very ostentatiously. Keloğlan welcomed the Hodja at the door. He kissed
his hand.
They embraced and hugged each other. The Hodja told a lot of stories about events
that he had lived, including witty remarks, until the wedding day. He made the guests
have a funny time. Keloğlan and Sultan Violet married among the entertainments with
musical instruments and much conversation. There were no words to describe their
happiness. They lived happily for many years.

When the peasant who, slowly drove the cart approached and saw the fox, he
stopped the bulls and congratulated himself on being so lucky to find a dead fox in the
middle of the road, because now he would be able to offer a nice coat to his wife!

HANSEL AND GRETEL
Once upon a time a very poor woodcutter lived in a tiny cottage in the forest with his
two children, Hansel and Gretel. His second wife often ill-treated the children and was
forever nagging the woodcutter.
"There is not enough food in the house for us all. There are too many mouths to feed!
We must get rid of the two brats," she declared. And she kept on trying to persuade
her husband to abandon his children in the forest.
"Take them miles from home, so far that they can never find their way back! Maybe
someone will find them and give them a home." The downcast woodcutter didn't
know what to do. Hansel who, one evening, had overheard his parents' conversation,
comforted Gretel.
"Don't worry! If they do leave us in the forest, we'll find the way home," he said. And
slipping out of the house he filled his pockets with little white pebbles, then went back
to bed.
All night long, the woodcutter's wife harped on and on at her husband till, at dawn, he
led Hansel and Gretel away into the forest. But as they went into the depths of the
trees, Hansel dropped a little white pebble here and there on the mossy green ground.
At a certain point, the two children found they really were alone: the woodcutter had
plucked up enough courage to desert them, had mumbledan excuse and was gone.
Night fell but the woodcutter did not return. Gretel began to sob bitterly. Hansel too
felt scared but he tried to hide his feelings and comfort his sister.
"Don't cry, trust me! I swear I'll take you home even if Father doesn't come back for
us!" Luckily the moon was full that night and Hansel waited till its cold light filtered
through the trees.
"Now give me your hand!" he said. "We'll get home safely, you'll see!" The tiny white
pebbles gleamed in the moonlight, and the children found their way home. They crept

through a half open window, without wakening their parents. Cold, tired but thankful
to be home again, they slipped into bed.
Next day, when their stepmother discovered that Hansel and Gretel had returned, she
went into a rage. Stifling her anger in front of the children, she locked her bedroom
door, reproaching her husband for failing to carry out her orders. The weak
woodcutter protested, torn as he was between shame and fear of disobeying his cruel
wife. The wicked stepmother kept Hansel and Gretel under lock and key all day with
nothing for supper but a sip of water and some hard bread. All night, husband and
wife quarreled, and when dawn came, the woodcutter led the children out into the
forest.
Hansel, however, had not eaten his bread, and as he walked through the trees, he left
a trail of crumbs behind him to mark the way. But the little boy had forgotten about
the hungry birds that lived in the forest. When they saw him, they flew along behind
and in no time at all, had eaten all the crumbs. Again, with a lame excuse, the
woodcutter left his two children by themselves.
"I've left a trail, like last time!" Hansel whispered to Gretel, consolingly. But when
night fell, they saw to their horror, that all the crumbs had gone.
"I'm frightened!" wept Gretel bitterly. "I'm cold and hungry and I want to go home!"
"Don't be afraid. I'm here to look after you!" Hansel tried to encourage his sister, but
he too shivered when he glimpsed frightening shadows and evil eyes around them in
the darkness. All night the two children huddled together for warmth at the foot of a
large tree.
When dawn broke, they started to wander about the forest, seeking a path, but all
hope soon faded. They were well and truly lost. On they walked and walked, till
suddenly they saw a white bird on the tree.he was singing beautifully.Hansel and
gretel impressed its voice and forgat that

THE TIN SOLDIER
Once a little boy was given a birthday present of a set of twenty-five tin
soldiers. All the soldiers had shiny red and blue uniforms and gleaming tin muskets.
However, one of the soldiers stood out from the rest because he had only one leg. In
the same nursery there were many other toys. There were wax puppets and jack-inthe-boxes. There were playing cards and porcelain dolls. There were colour pencils
and bouncing balls
.
There also lived a beautiful, dancing ballerina doll who stood at the entrance to a
cardboard castle which had a small mirror for a lake in front of it. She balanced herself
on one leg so well that the tin soldier thought that she had only one leg. She wore a
blue dress with a scarf. The scarf had a tinsel rose pinned on it in the centre. The tin
soldier admired the ballerina from .a distance and soon fell in love with her. “But she is
so beautiful and she lives in a beautiful castle! She will not like me at all!” thought the
poor tin soldier and felt very sad. A goblin, who also lived in the same nursery, did not
like the tin soldier at all. He was jealous of the tin soldier whenever the ballerina smiled

at him. The ballerina really liked the one-legged tin soldier in his smart red uniform.
One day, the goblin warned the tin soldier, “You better stay away from the ballerina!
She is mine! I am warning you!” But the tin soldier loved the ballerina so much that he
just couldn’t stop admiring her. One day, the puppets were playing together and the
ballerina was dancing prettily. It was raining heavily outside. The tin soldier was
standing on the windowsill and watching the dancing doll. The window was open. The
angry goblin crept behind the tin soldier and pushed him out of the window. Two
boys, who were passing by found him on the street and floated him down a gutter in a
paper boat. The little tin soldier flowed away in the water, into the drain nearby. He
was heartbroken because Ire feared lie would never see his ballerina ever again. He
saw a huge rat but the tin soldier was brave and holding onto his musket he floated
away just in time and escaped. In the dark drain, the poor one-legged tin soldier had to
fight many rats. The drain led into a canal where the water swirled fiercely, and here
the little paper boat was torn. A fish saw the tin soldier and swallowed him. He lay
inside the fish for three days, in the dark. The tin soldier thought that he would die
inside the fish.
One day, a fishermen caught the fish and sold it in the market. A lady bought the fish
from the market. Now this lady happened to be the little boy’s mother. Soon, the fish
was being prepared for dinner in their kitchen. When the cook cut the fish, she found

end.
But alas! The naughty little boy did not like the tin soldier anymore and he threw the
poor tin soldier into the fireplace. Suddenly, there was a gush of strong, cold wind
which blew the ballerina as well, into the fire. The tin soldier and the ballerina melted
in the fire. The next morning.when a maid cleaned the fireplace of the ashes, she
found a tiny red tin heart and tiny red rose. These belonged to the tin soldier and the
ballerina. who were finally together. The tin soldier and the ballerina married.they had

ALICE IN TARA MINUNILOR
STORYTELLER:
POVESTITORUL:
Alice and her big sister sat under a tree one sunny day. Alice’s sister had a book.
There were no pictures or conversations in it. Suddenly, a white rabbit ran close
by her. It took a watch out of its pocket and looked at it.

IEPURELE ALB:
Oh, dear! Oh, dear! I shall be too late!

Alice was so much surprised, that for the moment she quite forgot how to speak

under the hedge. The rabbit-hole went straight on like a tunnel for some way,
and then dipped suddenly down, so suddenly that Alice had not a moment to
think about stopping herself before she found herself falling down a very deep
well. Now she was in a very long room. There were four doors in the room, but
Alice couldn’t open them. Then she saw a little table. It had a tiny golden key on
it.

of the mushroom in her pocket and started to look for the rabbit again. She was
about to burst into tears, when the Cheshire Cat appeared and advised her to
visit the Mad Hatter and the March Hare. Following the cat’s instructions, Alice
found the two having a very good time at a strange tea-party. She joined them,
but, after a while, she became bored of that foolish party. She wanted to go

Cheshire Cat appeared again and told her that all the roads belonged to the
Queen of the Hearts. The Cat pulled a branch covering a hole in the tree that was
leading to the Queen’s palace. Alice entered the hole and she found herself near
some playing cards which were busily painting the white roses into red.

The Other Pinocchio
Once upon a time there was a wooden boy whom a fairy transformed into a real boy
as a reward for his kindness.
He
wouldn’t help anyone in need, people or animals, he wouldn’t do a good deed.
So, one day, a fairy appeared and said:
“For all the bad things that you’ve done so far, I’ll punish you and change you in
a wooden boy. If this doesn’t teach you anything and if you continue with your bad
behaviour, more bad things will happen to you in return. But if you change, you’ll be
again that real boy that you used to be.”
And so the boy was transformed into a wooden boy. To come back again to his
original form he will have to behave himself, as the fairy said. He knew that very well.
But, will he succeed?
Old habits die hard, as the old saying goes. And it soon turned out that it was a
bit difficult for him to change his bad behaviour. So, he continued behaving the same
way he used to: being rude, mean and telling lies. But when this happened, something
extraordinary happened too. His nose grew very long.
“What a big nose I have!” he said to himself.
He didn’t like this new nose at all.
“It doesn’t fit my face!”, he thought. “What shall I do?”
He decided to cut his nose short. And he asked Geppetto, his grandfather, to
do that for him.
Sayfa 58

They play hide
and seek, blind man’s buff and other games.
