So fabulous and so many memories! For the first time
in history, the newest music records were outsold by
older albums. The Golden Oldies format remains one
of the most popular radio formats on air with songs of
the 50s and 60s. A variation on the oldies theme is classic
hits, that provides the play list of oldies with Classic
Rock, R&B and Pop Hits, as well as our current hits.
Oldies can be traced back to L.A. radio's D.J. Art Laboe
who, in 1957, first coined “oldies but goodies,” in
response to his listeners wanting earlier tunes and seldom
heard of “black music” of that decade. Singers like Pat
Boone sang cleaned up white versions for mass pop
radio listening. We entered the 1950s, with traditional
and jazz infused pop hits performed by greats such as
Frank Sinatra, Perry Como, Nat King Cole, Frankie
Laine, and Patti Page, gradually giving way to doo-wop,
R&B, rockabilly rock and roll. Early 1960s included
the surf music of the Beach Boys, Jan and Dean, the
Ventures, the Surfaris, and Dick Dale and folk singers
or folk-rock of singers like Bob Dylan. 1960s was a
tumultuous decade for music starting with the major
transformation in style of the Beatles and the British
invasion of musical artists. Growing along side it was
the R&B and Mo-Town sounds of the Jackson 5, Stevie
Wonder, the Temptations, Diana Ross and the Supremes,
Marvin Gaye, and the Four Tops. The 1970s are often
remembered for disco and the emergence of soft rock,
glam rock, progressive rock, and heavy metal. The 1980s
saw the emergence of MTV, punk rock, new wave, and
alternative rock. The 90s saw Hip Hop and alternative
forms of Latin like Bachata and Salsa branches like
Tex-Mex Cumbia. Thanks in part to a song released in
1961 called “Those Oldies But Goodies” by Little
Caesar and the Romans and other throwbacks to the
1950s doo-wop style of singing that were featured in
the movie cult classics using older pop tunes like Pulp
Fiction, American Graffiti and Dirty Dancing, Oldies
music will continue to flourish as new generations
discover older hit tunes of their parents and grandparents
and want them for their phones or mp3 players, ensuring
that the oldies will always be goodies.
You can enjoy the music and dance to some of these
great Oldies tunes at our 30-Up Golden Oldies Theme
dance. Come join us in your 50s, 60s, 70s, 80s or 90s
gear. Elvis and other characters are welcome to groove,
dance and be cool on our dance floor and put a smile
on your feet.

GOLDEN
OLDIES
Classic and Solid Gold Music theme Dances
July 15th and 16th 2016
NEWS ABOUT OUR NEW DRIP-FREE ROOF!
Well, actually I have no news about the new roof. Mark
me down as Cautiously Optimistic.
ELECTRICAL ISSUES
We have problems requiring an electrician, such as the
lighting issues in the washroom at the East end; fuse
blowing coffee pot issues at the West end, and no heat in
the Office issues in the winter (although it only affects
the Treasurer, Vice Treasurer, and Membership so the
rest of the Board has quite reasonably managed to delay
doing anything about it for 20 years). The work will be
done shortly, although maybe the Office could wait until
next Spring…

She wore blue velvet. Bluer than velvet was
the night. Softer than satin was the light
music from the pop stars, of yester year.
Bring back good memories dancing to the
Golden Oldies, that made our world go
around, as well as Modern and hot Latin
Ballroom music. Come dressed as the 50s
big boppers or as 60s flower power hippies,
go-go Chic, Sgt Pepper’s band, folk artist or
sauve Mod swingers of the Mad Ad Men
era, or dare to just come as you are, groovy,
hip and Fab.
ON THE LIGHTER SIDE
Thanks to Ruth Dyson’s investigative work, we have
sourced inexpensive, long lasting and low energy light
bulbs, which will provide cost saving (including a
government grant) and will also cut back on the weekly
requirement to replace light bulbs.
OPPORTUNITIES KNOCK
We constantly try to find new ways of supporting our
members, and in June we have had a dance Shoe Sale
run during a Saturday by our friends at Dance Plus next
door to the Club, a clothing sale at a couple of dances
by Celedon Lush, and a jewellery sale by Jeannette
Moody two dances. Our mission is to provide a great
dancing venue, but the occasional new opportunity
offered by occasional “partners” helps keep us lively and
hopefully responsive to our dancers’ needs. Similarly,
when one of our DJs offered free line dances and a
teacher offered for us to hold a draw for a free lesson,
we welcomed the opportunities offered to us. (See From
The Board)
SYNERGY
Every so often, I like to remind everyone about the
“Other” two dances at the Club each week – Yueh-Li
Peng’s Sapphire Club on Sunday afternoons and Haida
Wang’s Java Dance Club on Sunday Evening. And of
course, Steve Nelson runs an Open Practice (he provides
the music) every Wednesday night. We find that people
attending these events attend ours interchangeably, and
so we help our Partners and they help us.

Remember the moments of travel where you forget your
troubles and just get happy? The environment was so
stimulating on every level, it just over loaded your senses
and broadens your mind. Hear the musical sounds that
have retained a flavor all of its own, that brings back the
images of foreign countries, that live on in your mind.
Express them at the 30-Up, dancing to exotic tunes
along with Modern and Latin ballroom music. Extend
your holiday and come dressed in a foreign costume.
