WALKING THROUGH THE TOWN
Tesnjar is the old part of the town built in Turkish times. It is squized between the river
bed of the Kolubara river and the hill and it is assumed that therefore it was named like that.
In the 19th century it was the center of Valjevo. With many shops and cra shops it
represented a trade-cra quarter of the town,called „carsija“.
Today this quarter of the town is one of the few urban units of the 19th century preserved
in Serbia in which still can be found many cra shops (po ery, harness, weaving shop)
thanks to which one can feel the spirit of old times.
Tesnjar has been many times the location for the filming of domestic and foreign movies.
If you visit Valjevo in mid- August, you will enjoy in numerous programes of cultural
event „Tesnjar Evenings“.
Through history
The oldest traces of humans in this area date from the Paleolithic period and were discovered in the nearby
Petnica cave. In the first centuries of the new era the space of today’s Valjevo was part of the Roman Empire and
a er its fall within the framework of the Byzantine Empire. Of the survived wri en documents that mention
Valjevo the oldest was discovered in the Dubrovnik archive and dates back to the year of 1393. Valjevo was
emerged as a medieval square at the crossroads which was visited by famous merchants of Dubrovnik.
The recent history of the town shows that Valjevo was one of the first among larger liberated places in the
First Serbian Uprising against the O oman Empire, on March 20, 1804. This day symbolizes the aspiration for
freedom of Valjevo inhabitants and is considered as the beginning of the development of European architecture
and spirit in the town. This date is celebrated as the Municipality Day.
In the First World War in 1914 near Valjevo the Ba le of Kolubara, commanded by general Zivojin Misic, was
fought in which the Serbian army heavily defeated Austro-Hungarian troops. A er the great ba le the whole
town was transformed into a war hospital that was immortalized in the picture “ Valjevo Hospital” by Nadezda
Petrovic, who died of typhoid in Valjevo in 1915 while taking care of the wounded.
The development of Valjevo was then slowed down by hardships brought by the World War II and at the
end of the 20th century, Valjevo has repeatedly been the target of the NATO bombing.
Twenty-first century brings hope for the further development of Valjevo.
The National Museum in Valjevo-the museum building was built in 1870. In the past it housed an
elementary school and grammar school. Today it is a modern museum with a permanent exhibition
dedicated to the 21st century named "The third dimension of the past- a view from the future" that takes
you through the past centuries and reveals the rich history of the Valjevo region.
The Muselim's konak (house)
is the oldest preserved building in Valjevo which was built in the 18th century. In the basement of
the building were imprisoned two well- known knights - Aleksa Nenadovic and Ilija Bircanin at the
beginning of 1804 from where they were taken to the execution on the bank of the river Kolubara which
was the cause for the First Serbian Uprising. In the building there is a permanent museum exhibition
dedicated to the First and Second Serbian Uprising in the Valjevo region.
The Nenadovic Tower was built in 1813 by Duke Jakov Nenadovic and was used for military
purposes. In the same year the Turks conquered it and turned it into a prison. A er liberation of Valjevo
the tower was rebuilt in 1836. A er many years of restoration and conservation this is today a culturalhistorical monument under state protection and one of the symbols of Valjevo.
Brankovina is an unique cultural and historical entity which is located in the vicinity of Valjevo (7
km far from Valjevo, on the road to Sabac). It is the home of the famous family Nenadovic: Jakov, Mateja,
Sima and Ljubomir. One of the most famous Serbian poetesses Desanka Maksimovic, spent her
childhood and completed primary school in Brankovina. This cultural and historical complex includes
the Church of Saint Archangel, Archpriest’s school, Desanka’s school, Old Courtroom, outbuilding of
family Nenadovic and Desanka Maksimovic’s grave. In the Desanka’s and Archpriest’s school there is a
permanent museum exhibition dedicated to the development of education of that time and to the life
and literature of Desanka Maksimovic.

When you come to any town
And in every town one is coming very late
When you come very late to any town
If that town by accident will be Valjevo
Where I came too
You will come on the road you had to come
That didn't exist before you
But it was born with you
To go on your own
And meet the one whom you have to meet
On the road you have to follow
She who was your life
Even before you met her
And knew she existed
She and the town in which you came.
When you come to any town
No ma er where you came from
From Veljeg Duboki or Kolasin
Or from nowhere, it is the same
When you leave your home
Anywhere
Just to leave as soon as possible
And come to any town
Say it, to Valjevo…
An excerpt from the poem
“When you come to any town”
by Matija Beckovic
