The opening of the opera and ballet
season at Teatro alla Scala is more than
a simple ‘première’, it is Italy’s most important
cultural and perhaps even social event of the
season. This year’s protagonist is ‘Joan of Arc’,
the monumental work by Giuseppe Verdi which
returns to Milan’s Opera House following a hiatus
of 150 years. Conducted by Riccardo Chailly and
directed by Moshe Leiser and Patrice Caurier,
this operatic rendition of her story includes
performances by soprano Anna Netrebko and
tenor Francesco Meli. 7 (Première), 10, 13, 15, 18,
