Selection of a DX Linear Servo Motor
To select a DX servo motor for your application, the following steps should be considered:
1. Determine the maximum force in your application. The maximum force is required when the motor moving coil is accelerated or is decelerated. This force must be less than the peak force of linear motor.

Step2: Calculate the acceleration and deceleration force.
Use equation F = ma, we have For example, the total moving mass (including the load mass, the motor coil, linear guide carriages and moving plate, cable and etc.) is 4.0 kg and you hope to run the motor at a acceleration of 10g (about 100m/s2). The maximum force required is:
F = Total _Mass*Acc = 4.0*100 = 400N

This force is the maximum force required in the application.
Step3: Calculate the RMS force
Using the RMS force equation, the RMS force as following:
In this case, you cannot select DX50­C1 motor, because its peak force is 225N, which is less than the maximum force required. You can select a bigger motor like DX50­C2 or DX50­C3.
2. Determine the Root­Mean­Square force in your application.
The Root­Mean­Square (RMS) force is a value used to approximate the average continuous force requirement of your application. The RMS force required must be less than the continuous force of the linear motor selected.
In Fig1, ta, tc, td, tw are the acceleration time, cruise time, deceleration time and the dwell time respectively. Fa, Fc, Fd are the acceleration force, friction force (can be neglected for simplicity of calculation) and deceleration force respectively. When motor is stopped (in tw), no force is needed (unless axis of motion is vertical). The RMS force for the motion in Fig1 as following:

Step4: Select a motor.
By the above calculation, We can select PBA DX50­C3 motor. Its continuous force is 189N which is higher than the required RMS force (133N). Its peak force is 675N, also higher than the required maximum force (210N).
Example2:
An application requires a stroke of 1m. The dwell time is 0.7s. Total moving mass is 4kg. Select a motor that gives the best performance when using normal mechanical components.
The linear motor acceleration has no limits as well, but most linear ball bearing guidance systems are limited to an acceleration of 6­8g. If high acceleration is required, air bearing may be used.
So if we select the motor cruise speed as 4m/s and the acceleration as 5g, the acceleration time is:

As showed in the above equation, increasing the dwell time or decrease the acceleration and deceleration force (by reducing the moving mass or reducing the acceleration and deceleration) will reduce the RMS force. The moving speed does not affect the RMS force.
As long as we select a linear motor that has a continuous force larger than the calculated RMS force, the motor will work safely.
Example1: A customer has an application where the required stroke is 600mm. The total moving mass is 7kg. The motion time is 0.3s. and the dwell time is 0.2s.
