GREETINGS
GET INVOLVED.
START TODAY.
This year we are celebrating 50 years of ITB: everything started in 1966 with only 9 exhibitors! Today
ITB Berlin is the leading global event of the tourism industry with 180 participating countries,
more than 10.000 exhibitors and 160.000 visitors. Our ITB Berlin Convention has become one of
the most important information platforms. As we are growing though, our responsibility is growing
as well – we need to use our key position in the market to promote responsible tourism – if we
don’t protect our planet, its nature and all its creatures, we will kill our means of existence.
Tourism holds the opportunity to be a strong tool for poverty reduction, well-being and peace. I am
happy to say that here at ITB, we continuously intensify our engagement and increasingly use
our platform to facilitate dialogue and networking among all the manifold actors of the tourism
supply chain to support this transformation process. One day, responsible thinking should as a
matter of course be embedded in each and every seminar!
If we look at the world these days, we cannot but feel worried: 300 million tons of plastic in our
oceans, food waste, mass animal farming, viruses, war, human rights abuses, terror attacks, the
European Schengen Agreement under threat, more than 60 million people on the move – but not
for fun and recreation but involuntarily fleeing from their home countries leaving behind their
livelihood – all these immensely sad factors influence tourism. We have to address these issues,
we cannot look away. We have to find sustainable solutions and build bridges. Many of the
topics we will address at this 50th edition of ITB will showcase important approaches and directions.
We will look into the challenges that destinations meet who welcome refugees and will relate
practical experiences, for example of integrating refugees at the workplace.
It is the first ITB following the important adoption of the United Nations Sustainability Goals.
The outcomes of COP21 Climate Change negotiations in Paris gives hope to all of us. We will
consequently address the challenges of climate change with a keynote at the CSR Day of the ITB
Convention and will also host a Tourism Watch discussion focusing on Agenda 2030 on Wednesday
at the small stage in hall 4.1.
Following a successful launch last year, National Geographic and ITB Berlin will once again be
presenting the World Legacy Awards that honor world-beating sustainable tourism initiatives.
This year, the Award Ceremony will take place at the ITB Convention Future Day on Wednesday!
Five winners in five categories, all of them role models for ecologically and socially responsible
action! The awardees will also be ready to answer to your questions during our CSR Day on Friday.
Another motivating prize will be the first ’Celebrating Her’ Award of the Indian branch of the
International Institute for Peace in Tourism (IIPT) which will honor the role of women in tourism.
To name one more, the prestigious TO DO! Awards of the German Studienkreis, real pioneers of
responsible tourism, will, for the first time, take place in a new location: Hall 19, Palais.
GREETINGS
One last word: Our lifestyle, what kind of mobility we chose, how we live, work, communicate, shop
and travel and how much meat we eat influences the environment tremendously – we have the
choice to help to disburden the environment and to act in a socially responsible manner. It’s our
choice but we need to cooperate and to spread awareness in our industry; for our own good
and for ecological, economic and social progress.
Enjoy ITB Berlin!
Yours truly
CSR PROGRAM
One of the trend topics at this year’s ITB is digitalization – let me remark, that we shouldn’t forget
to also use these new technologies for social improvement, to advance projects of global
importance and urgency rather than getting lost in a rather estranged reality. In parallel, there
is also a movement back to authentic experiences, storytelling, simplifying, slowing down as a new
luxury; topics which we will also address in various sessions, brought together here in this comprehensive program. Don’t miss to come and meet in person inspiring tourism practitioners at the
8th ITB – The Blue Yonder – Responsible Tourism Networking Event on ITB Friday evening in hall 4.1!

POWER OF “OPEN STREET MAPPING”: FROM DISASTER MANAGEMENT TO DESTINATION PLANNING
The earthquake in Nepal saw one of the largest amounts of online activism and remote mapping using Open Street Map.
India-based volunteers based in Pondicherry, Calicut and Bangalore joined volunteers from different parts of the world,
from Montreal to Kathmandu. The reports and maps generated by this online collective were later used by relief agencies
to reach locations in need and help the people there. The lessons learned from this experience are now being implemented
in destinations like Kozhikode, where district administration is working on ground-breaking, bottom-up destination
development through crowd-sourcing and the use of many tools, including Open Street Map.

This course will make you see sustainability differently. Based on my prior analysis of your websites, we will work together to
learn how you can better market and communicate what makes you different, by focusing on how it makes your customer’s
experience more complete. We will brainstorm realistic ideas you can adapt, relevant to the decisions your customers need to take that will help reassure them you are the right company for their needs. Without idealism, jargon and save the planet messages.
During the workshop you will get to know some of my students who can help you write the marketing and communications
plan during April and May.
THIS SESSION WILL COVER…
…why many current sustainability messages make little impact on your customers, and how integrating sustainability in your
company strategy will give you more meaningful, customer focused results. With time to debate, reflect on your current
practices and draft your sustainability marketing and communication action plan.

CSR PROGRAM
You can help: Call for donations of the Maltese during ITB Berlin!
If you want to help refugees staying in Berlin while you are visiting ITB you can donate the following items at hall 14.2
(East Entrance) on ITB Saturday & Sunday from 10.00 – 18.00: Packaged dry nuts or fruits, new sets of underwear for adults
(small sizes) and children as well as wool and fabrics!
We would really appreciate your contribution, ideally with a small personal message!
Support the work of the Maltese, an international non-governmental relief agency for humanitarian aid working in our
neighborhood!
Too beautiful to throw away – Exhibitors are asked to donate their ITB plants for refugees.
Donate your booth plants at the end of ITB Berlin to the Maltese and help to embellish accommodations of refugees.
You may deliver your potted flowers on Sunday, 13 March, starting from 6.00 pm in Room Regensburg (middle foyer between
Hall 4.1 and 3.1) and in Hall 14.2. (Eastern Entrance)
Many thanks!
