YOU BUILD PROMISE
o
“Children thrive in an
environment where
their well-being is
a priority.”
The problems that children develop due to child abuse and neglect have negative impacts that ripple across the lifespan, affecting children’s
chances to succeed in school, work, and relationships.” The words of Ms. Joo Yeun Chang, Associate Commissioner of the Children’s Bureau,
Department of Health and Human Services , serve as a continual reminder of the important mission and ongoing effort of agencies such as
Boysville—an enormous mission to help build a place of promise for victims of child abuse.
Did you know last month was National Child Abuse Prevention Month? At Boysville we maintain a perpetual awareness of the needs of abused
children because of the unyielding demand for our services and care and we’ve never been more resolute in our efforts to provide a safe, family
environment for children in need so they may become responsible adults.
The reason for this is really quite simple; children thrive in an environment where their well-being is a priority. Moreover, when a promise-filled
atmosphere surrounds them it enables them to develop into resilient individuals who have been empowered with the ability to counter the
negative effects and impact of abuse, and replace them with ripples of achievement and lifelong success in the endeavor of their choosing.
We are continually able to build promise in the lives of the children due to the generous support and contributions of people just like you. Your
financial support for the children of Boysville is a testament to your concern of child abuse prevention and the need to provide a shelter from the
storms that these young lives have already weathered not just for one month, but 365 days a year. With every gift of support, you are effectively
touching the future and sending a message to the children that their lives truly do matter. I hope that someday there will no longer be a need for
a month to raise awareness about the national plight of child abuse. Nevertheless, until that day, thank you for all that you do to build promise for
our future—the children.

We Are the Champions! Congrats to our Boysville Bobcats basketball
team who had an incredible run this season. They went undefeated all season long (14-0) in the city’s Under 16 Champions. Bobcats concluded the season with the Invitational Boysville Basketball Tournament where they placed
second.
Will You Be My Valentine?
We kicked off the Valentine’s weekend with our annual V-day breakfast for
the children here. Balloons, chocolate bouquets, flowers, stuffed animals, and
cards were many things our children received to take to school on this special
day. Many thanks to Steubing Ranch Elementary for the super sweet and cute
Valentine’s cards. The children loved them and had a weekend filled with love.
‘Ghetti Ready for Prom
Thanks to all who came out and made the annual Spaghetti Dinner Prom
Fundraiser a success. Each year the dinner raises funds to help juniors and
seniors attend prom in style. The funds helped to buy prom dresses, rent tuxedos, grooming, and dinner.
Boysville residents and their dates dressed up for Judson High School’s Junior

Anthony Tobias and Michelle Reyna from the Latin American Heritage Society
came out over the children’s spring break to talk to them about the importance
of school and anti-bullying.
Can You Find the Egg?
Our annual Easter Egg Hunt was a success this year thanks to Randolph AFB
Chapel Middle School Youth Group for supplying the eggs. The children
(ranging from toddlers to middle school age) had an exciting time in the
courtyard hunting for eggs that not only had candy inside, but fun mini toys as
well. The high schoolers wrapped it up with the Easter Scavenger Hunt hunting
for clues on campus for the grand prize of three chocolate bunnies.
A Walk on “Glory Road”
We had our annual Black History Month dinner to celebrate and highlight
African American history. The children watched the critically acclaimed movie
“Glory Road,” the true story of how Texas Western (University of Texas at El Paso)
coach Don Haskins led the first all-black starting line-up for a college basketball team to the NCAA national championship in 1966. At the end of the movie,
there was an exhibit set up where residents could come by and learn more
facts about the coach and team.

“It’s just an adjustment and we all are learning
each other, but it’s going smoothly. We know it
won’t be perfect,” explains Kyle.
So what helped Kyle and Melissa with fostering
a teenager? They credit the mentorship being a
great predecessor.
“It gives you time to get to know the child and
for them to build a trusting relationship with you,”
Melissa explains.
They also cite Boysville staff and training as a
tremendous help.
“The whole process has been easy; everyone
(staff) has been so nice and helpful. It is a great
support system we can lean on when we have
struggles.”
So what advice do they have to offer to potential
foster parents?
