at least once a year for routine check-ups.
Tuolumne County is blessed with an abundance
of public lands. Stanislaus National Forest,

Area, and the recreation areas around both
New Melones and Don Pedro Reservoirs offer
numerous opportunities for hiking, swimming,
rock climbing, and paddle sports. For more
information on accessing these areas contact
the public agencies that manage these lands.
Organized sport and recreation programs
are a great way to exercise, meet your
neighbors and have fun. Adults and youths

Close to half a million people die from a
tobacco-related disease each year —
Don’t let tobacco take you, a friend, or a
family member.
Be a role model for your children. If they
see you being physically active and having fun,
they are more likely to be active and stay active
throughout their lives.
Keep your children healthy —
do not let anyone smoke around your kids.
Involve the whole family in activities like hiking,
biking, dancing, basketball or skating.
Stay Tobacco Free!

wic program
This brochure was made
possible by the Tuolumne
County Health Department
Women, Infants, and Children
(WIC) Program.
The WIC Program is a nutrition education
program whose mission is to help low income
families with children 0-5, pregnant and
postpartum women to eat well and stay healthy.
The program focuses on nutrition and
breastfeeding education, referrals, and gives
vouchers for healthy foods.
To contact the WIC Program in Tuolumne
County, please call (209) 533-7431.
To find the WIC program nearest to you,
please call 1-800-852-5770.
WIC is an equal opportunity provider.
nutrition
Start the day with a nutritionally balanced
breakfast.
Eat 5-9 servings of fresh fruits and vegetables
daily. Fresh fruits and vegetables are available
at local Farmers Markets.
Try to incorporate whole grains into your diet
for at least 2/3 of your grains.
Drink plenty of water each day. Water is
required for every cell in the body as
nourishment and to remove wastes.
Parents decide what foods and when meals
and snacks will be eaten, children are in
charge of how much they need. Never force a
child to eat or punish a child for not eating. Let
toddlers develop their own sense of when they
are full. Sometimes children will be hungry and
eat a lot. Other times, they won’t eat very much.
Choose snacks wisely. Select snacks that are
high in healthful nutrients, but low in sugar and
fat. Some good snack ideas are: fruits,
vegetables, hard boiled eggs, peanut butter
and crackers, tortilla with cheese, yogurt - plain
or with fruit and/or nuts, and healthy fruit shakes.
TUOLUMNE COUNTY
Limit your children’s TV and
computer time. Offer active
options like joining a
recreation center, afterschool program, or lessons
in a sport that they enjoy.
GO-
GUIDE
A Guide to Staying Active
in Tuolumne County
Always wear a helmet when biking or skating.
Be aware of your surroundings when biking,
jogging or walking. Exercise with a friend!
Winter activities require suitable cold weather
gear. Make sure you have what you need.
Don’t over-exercise. Stagger workouts between
heavy and light strain. For example, you can
alternate a weight training routine with biking.
Take extreme care when bicycling,
especially with children. Many county
roads are winding and narrow. Use
designated bike paths.
