Adjudicators’ Biographies
Bethann Adams (First Colony Middle School, Texas) - Bethann Adams is in her thirtieth
year as Director of Bands at First Colony Middle School and her thirty-fourth year of
teaching band in the Fort Bend Independent School District. Ms. Adams received her
Bachelor of Music Education degree from Houston Baptist University. Bands under Ms.
Adams’ direction have consistently received superior ratings at Texas University
Interscholastic League (UIL) Concert and Sight-reading Contests, as well as other
contests and festivals in the state of Texas. In 1997 the First Colony Middle School
Symphony Orchestra performed at the Midwest Clinic in Chicago, Illinois. In 2002, the
First Colony Middle School Honors Band was selected as a finalist in the Texas CCC
Honor Band competition. The band also performed at the Midwest Clinic in 2002. The
First Colony Middle School Band Program is a recipient of the most prestigious Sudler Silver Cup, administered
by the John Philip Sousa Foundation. In 2006, the Honors Band performed at the 33rd annual Southeastern
United States Concert Band Clinic at Troy University in Troy, Alabama. In 2009, the Honors Band was invited to
perform at the Music for All/ Bands of America National Concert Band Festival in Indianapolis, Indiana. Ms.
Adams was chosen as the 2007 Teacher of the Year at First Colony Middle School and was named the 20072008 Fort Bend ISD Secondary Teacher of the Year. In March of 2009 she was awarded the Scroll of Excellence
by the Women Band Directors International. Ms. Adams is member of the Fort Bend ISD Teacher Forum
Leadership Council. Ms. Adams serves as an adjudicator and clinician in Texas and throughout the United
States. Her professional affiliations include Texas Bandmasters Association, Texas Music Educators
Association, Texas Music Adjudicators Association, Women Band Directors International, Phi Beta Mu and
Sigma Alpha Iota. Ms. Adams is co-chair of the Sudler Silver Cup administered by the Sousa Foundation.
Mary Ellen Cavitt (Texas State University) - Mary Ellen Cavitt is Professor of Music
Education and Associate Director of the School of Music at Texas State University. She
recently received the Texas State University Alumni Teaching Award of Honor, Everette
Swinney Faculty Senate Teaching Award, Presidential Awards of Distinction in Service and
Teaching, and the College Achievement Award for Excellence in Scholarly/Creative
Activity. Dr. Cavitt received Bachelor and Master degrees in horn performance from The
Juilliard School and a Ph.D. in music education from The University of Texas at Austin. She
is a 2013 graduate of Harvard University’s Management Development Program for higher
education leaders. During her tenure in the Texas public schools, she was named
Outstanding Young Bandmaster of the Year at the Texas Bandmaster Convention in San Antonio. Dr. Cavitt has
served on the music education faculties of Michigan State University, The University of Arizona, and The
University of Texas at San Antonio and as an administrator of instrumental music for North East Independent
School District in San Antonio, Texas. She is an active clinician and adjudicator and her research has been
presented at regional, national, and international conferences. She currently serves as editor for the Texas
Music Education Research Journal and Texas Music Educators Association (TMEA) Region 18 College Division
Chair, and is past Chair for the Instructional Strategies Research Interest Group for the National Association for
Music Education. Dr. Cavitt’s teaching responsibilities at Texas State University include instrumental
techniques, educational methods, graduate music education courses and supervision of student teachers.
Mike Lowery (Santa Fe High School – Edmond, Oklahoma) - Mike Lowery taught public
school for 41 years, with 33 years in Edmond, Oklahoma and eight years in Missouri. He
was the director of bands at Santa Fe High School in Edmond, Oklahoma and served as
Instrumental Music Coordinator for the Edmond Public Schools. Mr. Lowery has served as
adjudicator and clinician throughout the United States and in London and Paris. He was
honored to be on staff with the Stan Kenton Jazz Orchestra in Residence for seven years.
He has been the Executive Secretary for the Central Oklahoma Directors Association
(CODA). Mr. Lowery was named the Oklahoma State Music Educator of the Year and the
Section VI Outstanding Music Educator in 2003 by the National Federation of High
Schools. He was the Santa Fe High School Teacher of the Year in 2005 and the Oklahoma Bandmasters
Association Director of the Year for 2008. He received the Oklahoma Music Educators Association’s (OMEA)
Exemplary Teacher Award in 2014. Mr. Lowery’s bands have been named “Outstanding” in festivals in
Chicago, St. Louis, Dallas, New Orleans, Nashville and San Antonio. They have traveled five times to London,
once to Paris and once to Rome for their respective New Year’s Day Parades. His bands were also selected as
OMEA Honor Bands on five occasions.
