Summer tyres 2013
Summer tyres 2013
Safety from the expert on
extreme conditions.
Nokian Tyres has over 75 years of experience in the manufacturing of tyres for extreme conditions.
The ever-changing d
riving conditions of the north have taught us that summer tyres must be safe to
drive from the budding of spring to the wet leaves of autumn, on dry and wet asphalt and uneven dirt
roads alike. The extensive Nokian range offers you the choice of reliable and durable tyres that will suit
your car’s properties and your driving habits.
TM
What kind of tyre tracks do you
want to leave behind?
Nokian Tyres is also a bold leader in environmental friendliness. In 2005, we were the first tyre manufacturer in the world to introduce purified, low-aromatic oils to tyre manufacturing. More recently, we have
focused strongly on reducing the rolling resistance of our tyres.
When a tyre rolls on a road surface, it creates friction known as rolling resistance. The higher the rolling
resistance, the greater the fuel consumption. The right choice of tyres will lower fuel consumption and as a
result, reduce carbon dioxide emissions.
You can have an impact on your tyre tracks by making sure your tyres are in good condition, that the tyre
pressure is correct, and by driving smartly, i.e. defensively, economically and courteously.
Extreme conditions are not overcome by fantasy
but by ideas tested in practice.
For over 75 years we have developed, tested and patented solutions that enhance safety in
driving. Continuous innovation work is harnessed to improving safety, durability and environmental friendliness. The guiding principle is sustainable safety: the tyre should retain its
features intact under all conditions, even as it ages and wears.
Aquaplaning indicator
Information field
Polished grooves
When the tyre has only four milli
metres of tread depth remaining, the
tread’s drop symbol will disappear, re
minding the driver of the increased risk
of aquaplaning.
The information field can be used
to mark down the right tyre pres
sure level and the tyre’s placing
under the car.
Stylishness is functional. Water
flows effectively from under the
tyre through the polished main and
lateral grooves preventing aquaplan
ing.

Mud stopper
Swoop Grooves
Canola-silica compound
The mud stopper prevents sand and
mud from getting caught between the
rim and the tyre and extends the ser
vice life of the tyre and rim.
The Swoop Grooves effectively prevent
aquaplaning. The elliptical slots on the
transversal grooves on the outer shoul
der store more water, as the volume
of the transversal grooves increases.
This improves the aquaplaning resist
ance characteristics.
The canola oilsilica compound in the
tread improves the tear resistance of
the tyre as well as its wet grip and re
duces rolling resistance.

Single wire bead
Low rolling resistance
Naturally Nokian Tyres
The single wire bead structure ensures
the durability of the tyre even with
hard use.
The more easily the tyre rolls, the less
fuel it consumes and the fewer CO2
emissions it generates. There can be
large differences in rolling resistance
among tyres, as much as 40%. This
means approximately a 6% difference
in fuel consumption.
Nokian Tyres was the world’s first
manufacturer to go over using
purified, low aromatic oils throughout
its production.

Testing in extreme conditions.
The ABS, traction control and electronic stability control systems in modern cars are top class and bring a sense of
safety to driving. In extreme situations, in braking or in evasive manoeuvres on a wet road you want safety to be
more than just a feeling. A tyre tested in extreme conditions supplements the car’s safety systems and does what you
expect. You can stop and steer as if nothing had happened. Without raising your pulse and unnoticed by passengers.
Nokian Tyres’ proving grounds in Ivalo and Nokia are used to simulate extreme driving conditions around the year in
all possible conditions. As well as test equipment and measurement devices a major weighting in the results is placed
on the experience of our practised test drivers.
The danger of aquaplaning
In dry summer conditions the driver does not really need to think about the tyres at all. When a thunderstorm takes you by surprise and suddenly fills
the ruts in the road with water then aquaplaning is an obvious problem. The best way to avoid it is with new tyres where the tread geometry pumps
the water away from under the tyre. When a tyre has less than 4 mm of tread depth its wet grip performance deteriorates substantially. This means
that the breaking distance will be longer and the car will skid more easily. Therefore, you must pay attention to your tyres and make sure they are in
good condition.

Tyres that are used every day have to provide unconditional
reliability throughout their life. Nokian Hakka C Cargo and
Nokian Hakka C Van are designed for heavy use right down
to the smallest detail. However, durability on its own is not
enough, the tyre has to give an accurate feel for the road
in bad weather too.
The tread pattern and structure of the Nokian Hakka C Cargo
for heavy vehicles is similar to a lorry tyre and can take
the heavy wheel loadings of distribution and goods vehi
cles without any trouble. The non-directional tread pattern
enables you to mount the tyre anywhere on the vehicle.

What does the new
EU tyre label tell us?
®
In November 2012, the European Union introduced a new EU tyre labelling. The EU tyre
label will help consumers compare tyres in terms of fuel economy, wet grip, and external
rolling noise.
B
The new tyre label applies to tyres for passenger cars, 4x4s, vans, trucks, and buses that
are manufactured after 1 July 2012 and that are approved for road use. The label does
not apply to studded tyres.
72 d B
Information on the EU tyre label and its classifications is available from tyre retailers,
the Nokian Tyres website, and the tyre label itself. The classification information and
further information related to safety are available by scanning the QR code on the
label with a smartphone.
The selection of a tyre is a sum of many components.
When selecting a tyre, always choose one that matches your usage in the best possible way. In
addition to the three properties in the EU tyre labels, there are a number of factors related to safety,
performance and the environment that tyre developers take into account. Although the new labels
make it easier to compare tyre models, you should also support your decision by consulting the
following professional tyre retailers, indebendent magazine tests, and tyre manufacturers.

Classification criteria
for EU tyre label
Fuel economy – Lighter rolling
› Best and weakest: A to G, savings of up to 5 full tanks during the operating life. *
› Adjacent classes: B to C, savings 0.1 l/100 km. *
Rolling resistance affects the energy efficiency, oper
ating costs, and carbon dioxide emissions of the tyre.
Rolling resistance amounts to approx. 20 per cent of
the vehicle’s fuel consumption. Lower rolling resistance
amounts to better fuel economy.
The difference in consumption between the best and
weakest tyre (AG) is significant, at around 0.6 l/100
km. The lightly rolling tyres also reduce CO2 emissions
by 14 g/km. During the entire operating life of the tyre,
the amount of fuel equals five full tanks (240 litres).
A
+240 l
G
Wet grip – More safety
› Best and weakest class: A to F, braking distance over 18 metres shorter. *
› Adjacent classes: B to C, braking distance shorter by one car length. *
For summer tyres, wet grip is especially important in
terms of safety. Tyres with excellent wet grip have a
shorter braking distance, more stable handling, and
better driveability. The label indicates the tyre’s braking
distance on wet asphalt, from a speed of 80 km/h. For
example, the difference between class A and class F in
terms of stopping distance can be over 18 metres, or
four car lengths.
(weakest class). For fuel economy, class D is not used;
for wet grip, classes D and G are not used.

External rolling noise – Quieter
› 3 black sound waves = Exceeds the new EU type approval level
› 2 black sound waves = Equals the new EU type approval level
› 1 black sound wave = More than 3 dB quieter than required by
the new type approval
The value for external rolling noise signifies the external
noise pollution caused by the tyre on the environment.
The interior noise that the driver experiences is not
taken into account.
Car’s fuel consumption 7l/100 km. Estimated annual mileage 15,000 km, 40,000 km during the tyre’s lifetime. The values are measured according to the testing methods of decree
EC/1222/2009.
In addition to the noise value reported in decibels (dB),
the label has 1 to 3 black sound waves signifying the
EU type approval class of the tyre.
The new tyre label values can be found after the size marking, for example 215/65 R 15 100 H XL BC ))72. The first letter indicates the fuel economy
class of the tyre [B], and the second indicates the wet grip class [C]. The round brackets indicate the noise level of the tyre. )))= exceeds the new type
approval limit, ))= corresponds to new type approval, )= more than 3 dB quieter than the new type approval. The number figure [72] indicates the external rolling noise in decibels.
