Victorian Dance Weekend Nov 1–3
Glen Tavern Inn in Santa Paula
www.orgsites.com/ca/sdvdance
A
n opportunity not to be missed! Join
our friends, The San Diego Vintage
Dancers, Friday afternoon, November 1,
for the start of a magical back-in-time
weekend celebrating the late Victorian
& early Edwardian eras. Lectures, dance
classes, picnic, croquet on the lawn, dinner, & even a fabulous Saturday evening
ball with authentic, live music.
On Sunday, participants are encouraged journey back to Pasadena to join us,
the Victorian Tea & Dance Society, here
at our home the Scottish Rite Cathedral
for our Tea Dance Social. Live music and
a full tea luncheon will be served.
Weekend participants are strongly encouraged to ‘dress the eras’(1870-1910)
for the entire weekend, including day
wear and evening wear, as appropriate.
Distressingly modern clothing: jeans,
shorts, tennis shoes, mini dresses, tee
shirts are NOT APPROPRIATE. If your
historical wardrobe is limited, dresses
and suits would be most appropriate and
evening wear for the ball. This event is
limited in attendance, and they are sure
to sell out. Attendees must purchase the
entire package (no ‘ball only’ tickets).
The festive weekend will take place at
the Glen Tavern Inn in the historic ham-
let of Santa Paula, just east of Ventura.
This charming Tudor-Craftsman Inn
was built in 1911, designed by famed
architects Burns and Hunt and funded
by a consortium of twenty-five wealthy
townsmen, brings to mind an English
manor house, and provides the perfect
setting for our weekend.
Cost of the weekend program is $90
per person (hotel is separate) and includes all lectures, classes, plus Saturday night dinner and dancing. Breakfasts, lunches, and Friday dinner are on
your own, in the Inn’s restaurant, or in
town. To register for the weekend go to:
www.orgsites.com/ca/sdvdance/.
DO NOT DELAY ON BOOKING
THIS EVENT if you wish to attend! It
will absolutely sell out far in advance!
A History of the Glen Tavern Inn:
Santa Paula was growing and prospering as an oil town, and headquarters to
Union Oil. The Inn was erected directly
opposite the train depot to provide accommodations to the burgeoning oil and
citrus industries, and a gathering place
for Santa Paula’s growing high society.
During Prohibition, the Inn retained
its Wild West origins as the third floor
was used as a speakeasy, brothel & gambling parlor.
In the ‘30s, Hollywood discovered Santa Paula. Its ruggedly picturesque vistas,
close to the sprawl of Los Angeles, provided a setting for numerous Westerns.
Glen Tavern Inn hosted notables Carol
Lombard, John Wayne, Houdini and Rin
Tin Tin, who boasted his own suite.

1.5 tsp Baking Soda
1 tsp Salt
1 cup Raisins
2 cups Buttermilk

victorianteaanddance.org
* Fill cans, not more than 2⁄3 full,
and cover with two (2) layers of
aluminum foil that has been buttered and tie with string to secure.
* Place the cans on a rack in a deep
kettle. Add boiling water to come
halfway up around the cans. Cover.
Set over the heat and steam 1.5 to 2
hours. Keep the water boiling and
add more as needed to keep the
water at the proper level. They are
cooked when a long metal rod is
inserted into the center end comes
out dry.
* Take the cans from the water,
remove the aluminum foil and set
in a 300 degree oven for about 15
minutes to dry out if necessary [I
have not found this to be necessary
—SS].
Remove the bread from the cans.
