In the Dutch language, Beren stands for Bears, Gieren stands for Vultures.
Yes indeed, (here are) The Bear Vultures! Bears are hunters.Vultures feed on
what has already been hunted. No, we are not talking about cuddly toy vultures
and teddy bears here. Bears roar and groan, sniff and smell, grab, capture and
deform.Vultures have got further plans. They tease and reuse the crooked remains
of the cadaver, distilling the bear’s idea to its essence.
With De Beren Gieren life is used, moved on, transformed and examined to the
bone. Prepare to be devoured twice. With paws and wings they’ll shatter and bite,
creep and glide, inside and outside. All possibilities looked into without a piece left
out. Crude but refined to the bone... and yet still slightly cuddly!
Music zoologists, De Beren Gieren will bare their souls, take you to another world
and bring you back to life somehow. www.deberengieren.be

“(Kenny Werner’s) compositions and ebullient arrangements couch a droll wit within
harmonically and rhythmically inventive settings, leavened with a touch of whimsy. Those
trademarks are all intact on this disc recorded with the Brussels Jazz Orchestra, one of

Flat Earth Society
Marjan Van Rompay Group
Flat Earth Society is and remains Belgium’s most original and most daring
‘big band’. Not in the traditional sense of the word, but simply because there are
fifteen musicians. The influences are many in their far from traditional ‘big band’
music. Although the word ‘eclectic’ still gives them the creeps, it is difficult to
describe this exuberant music otherwise.
“Beautifully constructed melodies, interesting turns in her phrasing, original compositions
and a band that has clearly mastered the language of playing together. All this turns her
music into something that touches me. It projects me into a fantasy world, away from the
everyday, and that’s what good music is supposed to do. This band has worked its way
towards maturity, is telling a story, and more than overcomes the academic level in which
jazz sometimes risks drowning.” Jef Neve
“Marjan’s perfectly attuned band carries her as if she was floating on clouds. Her warm and
intensive alto sound and the exceptional interaction between Weijters at the piano and
Bruneel behind the bass, as well as the subtle drumming of Van Dionant create an amazing
intensity.”
Bernard Lefevre, Jazzmozaiek
“What we hear from the Flemish alto saxophonist Marjan Van Rompay is simply
astonishing. It shows solid control of the craft, it never bores, and makes you think of the
memorable albums of American jazz heroes from the ‘50s and the ‘60s. Rompay’s debut could
not be any stronger.”
Rinus Van der Heijden, Jazzenzo
The 13th album on the occasion of their
13th anniversary contains 13 tracks and was
released in February 2013 with Igloo Records.
“ This ‘little big band’ must contain some of Europe’s most creative and ADD seized musicians,
because it goes so fast that it burns holes in the wallpaper...Those who think this is
completely free jazz without guidance or control, have got it completely wrong...
Peter Vermeersch leads the band with an adult hand, and the musicians follow him down
to the fingertips.” Jan Granlie,Jazznyt

Too Noisy Fish ‘Eat, Sleep, Fight’
This new piano has matured as the rhythm section of the Flat Earth Society.
Pianist Peter Vandenberghe wrote the songs under the denominator of Fast, Easy
or Sick: music that freely draws on jazz, rock, free, contemporary music, techno ...
and that cannot be captured by a single musical genre.
“The music is adventurous, courageous, humorous at times and all kinds of other things.
I love it! It has a very good sound to it as well. I’m looking forward to hearing your new
material.” Oz Fritz :producerTom Waits,Van Morrison,Paul McCartney
“A diverse, original set that evinces robust chops, tricky twists and turns and, above all,
a rampant sense of humour.” The NewYork City Jazz Record

Too Noisy Fish
De Looze/Machtel/Dewaele,‘Lost Treasures’
Sensitivity, colour, dynamics, clarity and economy are essential values to this trio,
where there is space to accept, and having something to add to, each other’s
concept of playing. Every note is approached with true and honest feeling and a
sense of openness, the musicians having their minds surrounded by sounds coming
from a lot of different musical corners and paths in jazz history.
“… Bram De Looze is, at his young age, already one of the most important piano players in
the Belgian jazz scene ...” Peter De Backer,Jazzmozaïek
“A very interactive and refreshing trio with a lot of respect for the jazz tradition.”

The Rebirth Collective
This octet, composed of five horns and a rhythm section, operates like a small
big band. The compositions sound like bebop and hard bop of the 50s and 60s, but
with a modern twist, from sensitive ballads to flaming up-tempos with deep
groove moments and exciting solo battles.

Mâäk
MET-X // Marockin’ Brass Ft Byron Wallen
A Belgo-French collective which consists of musicians that work on improvisation
based on a perspective combining fundamental building blocks: form, duration,
interaction, texture, dynamics, pulsation, silence, contrast, constraint, feeling,
friction … but also by the possible negation of one or all of these elements.
MET-X is a house for and of musicians which transforms sounds from the belly of
the city into a unique musical universe. In collaboration with artists coming from
different horizons we manufacture the creative elements in order to form bands,
events and educational processes. Our acoustic universe is closely linked to that of
the steaming capital: sometimes loud, sometimes soft, sometimes beautiful,
sometimes ugly. Never smooth. Always exciting.
Moving music. Music that moves.
“Mâäk develops a natural tendency towards the unclassifiable. We are constantly looking
for thousands of life forms, of which the most as possible connect on all levels of our
activities. It’s about accepting that our music, despite all our reflections and additional
work, is created on the spot, while it takes form and spreads itself.
It’s also about realizing that all our paths are different. And from the tensions that arise from
these differences we make use to construct new paths together. That way, at the end of our
journey, we are able to propose the public another vision and sentiment towards the concept
of a concert.” Laurent Blondiau - artistic director
Marockin’ Brass Ft Byron Wallen
After recent collaborations with such diverse artists as the great saxophonist
Trevor Watts (GB), Adama Dramé’s Foliba (Burkina Faso), a popular wedding
band from Ouarzazate (Morocco), and even the Royal Flemish Philharmonic,
Marockin’ Brass now invites the British trumpeter Byron Wallen as special guest.
He will work with his long term collaborator and drummer Tom Skinner.

Tania Maria
On her latest recording, Brazil’s Tania Maria serves up another batch of

ballads tossed into the mix.The arrangements are elegant and simple, and
never get in the way of the groove that Maria lays down. Rhythmically compelling

“Once Mélanie starts singing, it seems like a fire is burning under the ice…Melanie has a
warm, dark and sultry voice and a style that is hard to pinpoint, one which blends the
rhythmic incantatory feelings of Nina Simone, with some sexy shades of Sade, and even
echoes of the Velvet Underground… No Deal is like an excursion into exotic uncharted
territory, dangerous, but with the promise of a rich reward.” Dave Wade Veteran DJ @

young musicians from jazz, world and contemporary music. Over the years, it has

primary role of IGLOO Records: providing a platform for future talent is what we do.
Outhere Music Group is an independent musical production and publishing
company whose discs are published under the catalogues Æon, Alpha, Arcana,
Fuga Libera, Outnote, Phi, Ramée, Ricercar and Zig-Zag Territoires.
Each catalogue has its own identity. Our discs and our digital products cover a
repertoire ranging from ancient and classical music to contemporary, jazz and
world music. Outnote Records is the jazz label of the group. Outhere Music
produces more than 100 CDs per year, distributed in more than 35 countries.
