Where our pupils travel from
A new secondary academy right in Worthing. The site has good public
transport, walking and cycling links and will serve pupils from a large
catchment area. The completed site next to Northbrook college on the A24 in
Broadwater will open in June 2016. The school will access the sports facilities
at Manor Field via a pedestrian crossing over the A24 Broadwater Road. The
school’s main entrance for cars is off the Broadwater Road where there are
also two pedestrian access points. There is a further pedestrian access at the
rear of the school from Queen Street car park. Queen Street car park is also
the site for staff parking. 190 pupils will attend initially but the school will then
grow year on year to around 900 pupils by September 2019 which is its
capacity.
The vast majority of students at the school live within the Borough of
Worthing. Some staff also live in Worthing whilst others come from Brighton
to the East, Chichester to the West and Mid Sussex to the North. The multiple
access points will support pupil and staff access to the school and will lessen
the impact on the local environment.
The site does have a range of transport issues and the school will be working
with WSCC and the local community to address these through a range of
measures detailed within this travel plan.

Lessons Learnt from current situation with temporary school:
We have been open as a school on our temporary site which is Queen Street Car Park since September 2015 prior to
that the site was closed form mid June whilst the school building were erected. The school has 195 students and 24
staff and this has enabled us to learn lessons from our original travel plan.
As part of opening and in response to a request from a local neighborhood group we asked parents to sign up to a
home school agreement which included a statement of co-operation with our published travel plan and respectful
parking in the local area for School set down and pick up. We also suggested a voluntary one way system
approaching the school from Carnegie Road, Cortis Avenue and then either left or right onto Queen Street. Morning
drop off has not significantly impacted on the surrounding area and we have a duty staff teacher in a in fluorescent
jacket at the Queen Street entrance to help students across the road and supervise parental drop off. The same is
true at the end of the day when we do at times experience some low level congestion with a small number of parents
parking on double yellows on Queen Street due to the narrower time window. Duty staff make a point of asking them
to move on and generally this goes smoothly.

We have also provided a temporary car park next to the school with twenty spaces for local residents to use as a
replacement for the loss of the overall car park. Monitoring of this shows that it has received very little use with on
average three - six cars using it during the day or overnight.
Visitors to the school during the day experience little problem finding local parking on the streets implying that the loss
of the car park has had minimal impact. It is worth noting that included in this is the loss of parking for students
attending Northbrook College and also parking used by the Local Audi dealership. We will be carrying out some Beats
surveys in early December to more accurately quantify the availability of parking in the locality whilst Queen Street car
park is out of use.

Nearest Station is Worthing Station which is 10mins south of the school by foot.
This is part of the Soutch Coast line and has direct links westwards to Worthing
West, Durrington, Goring by Sea, Angmering and all stops to Chichester. Eastward
stations are East Worthing, Lancing, Shoreham by Sea and all stops to Brighton.

Broadwater Road is the major thoroughfare North South for Worthing and links to
the A27 which runs East West towards the top of the town. There are a number of
smaller roads around the school which act as minor arteries in the local area.

A number of park and stride points have been identified away form the main school
with associated safe walking routes in. For students arriving by car or being picked
up these are the areas we would expect parents to use:
