86 years of service to North Dakota and

When the 1969 Minot flood devastated
the city in a way it had never seen before,
a young Chuck Kramer and Greg Flagstad
went looking for work to help their families
get back on their feet. After I. Keating
replaced the Kramer family’s flooring, the
not-quite-16-year-olds lied about their age
in order to be hired on the spot. I. Keating
knows we don’t just sell floors. We give you

47 years ago, and Chuck and Greg are still

Great American Bike Race Keeps
Peddling for a Good Cause
The Great American Bike Race (GABR)
is a staple fundraising event in central
and western North Dakota. Teams from
Dickinson, Watford City, Williston, Minot
and other communities in North Dakota
travel to Bismarck every year to support
local kids and their families that face daily
struggles with cerebral palsy and related
disabilities.
GABR has grown to be the largest
fundraiser of its kind in the United States.
Since it began in 1997, GABR has raised
just under $3 million. In 2016, 106 teams
of 12 riders pedaled a combined 7,869
miles and raised $403,700. GABR funds
support children and families throughout
the region with expenses associated with
cerebral palsy and related disabilities. The
funds provide the families with resources
that go above and beyond insurance
coverage.
Melanie Carvell, a long-time Sanford
employee, helped create the annual event
and has been involved with GABR since
it started 20 years. She looks forward to
attending the bike race every year.
“GABR is a great community event
where people from all over the state of
North Dakota come together and ride
for a cause,” said Carvell. “This event has
become such a tradition for many of the
teams that participate. For some, this
has become a friendly competition each
year to see who can bike the furthest or
who can raise the most money. It is truly
a tradition each spring in Bismarck and
many people look forward to the exciting
event each year.”
Each team consists of up to 15
individuals, 12 of which ride in a
20-minute heat. Prizes are awarded
to the top fundraising team and for
the top mileage team. In 2016, the top
fundraising team was Mitch’s Mighty
Dickinson Riders, raising more than
$16,000. The top mileage team was
Burleigh County Bicycle Cult, peddling a
total of 95.91 miles.
“We also award the most creative team,”
said Jodi Smith, executive director of the
Sanford Health Foundation in Bismarck.
“Half of the fun is just walking around
the gym and looking at all of the team’s
costumes and decorations. We’ve had
teams dress up as superheroes, cartoons
and even clowns. This year, Rehab Riders
won the most creative award. The team
was made up of riders dressed up as
Thing 1 and Thing 2, along with a display
of Dr. Seuss books and themes. And the
best part about it is every year there are
more people who come out to the event
and support these children and their
families with cerebral palsy.”
The goal of GABR is to raise money
for children of cerebral palsy and their
families, and of course to have fun. Since
the race started in 1997, more than $2
million have been distributed to families
throughout North Dakota, South Dakota
and Montana to help with expenses not
covered by insurance. Money is disbursed
quarterly, and most recently, the GABR
committee disbursed more than $100,000.
The most recent disbursement made in
May will assist GABR fund recipients
with costs related to the purchase of new
wheelchairs and accessories, wheelchair
repairs, adaptive vehicles, equipment such
as standing frames and shower chairs,
lifts, ramps, specialty beds, adaptive
bikes and trikes, custom seating systems,
therapy, medications, medical services,
communication equipment and medical
travel.

Participants don’t need to be expert
cyclists to join. The name of the game is
fun and plenty of contestants take breaks
during their ride. It’s never too early to
start gathering riders for a team at the
2017 race. The 2017 Great American Bike
Race will be held on Saturday, April 8.

opened three months ago, in May 2016,
in order to fill the need of a food co-op to
provide convenient access to fresh, local

a full-service natural foods grocery store,

produce, bulk, meat and seafood, a deli
and a coffee/beverage bar). The co-op
offers friendly, knowledgeable staff and
plenty of unique items. Selections are
free-range, sustainably raised and organic,
making it perfect for everyone who wants
a little more from its food.
Because the co-op is owned by its
members, it remains member-driven
and community focused. The Co-op
acts as a hub to connect consumers to
producers, as well as a year-round store

marketplace for local, organic and
sustainably produced foods.
The Co-op additionally operates as an
educational center with classroom space
that focuses on empowering consumers
to cook using whole, fresh foods.

adventure. The zoo houses more than 600 animals
representing 125 species, 16 of them endangered
or threatened.
Throughout the season, the zoo offers camps and
educational activities for all ages, as well as events
like Children’s Day, Breakfast at the Zoo, ZooBoo
The zoo is open daily from 10 AM — 7 PM from
May through September, and Friday, Saturday and
Sunday from 1 – 5 PM October through April. All
hours are weather permitting. Train rides operate
from May — August (with limited hours in
September) and provide a guided tour of the zoo
for a nominal fee. The concession stand operates
May — August (with limited hours in September)
and features beverages and ice cream along with a
