Just a Thought...
Enough good things cannot be said about
last weekend’s Pentecost liturgy in the
Parking Lot! First of all, to all of you who
rearranged your schedules and found
yourself altering your Sunday morning
routines, a big huge “Thank You!” I know
that when the crazy church people decide
to try something way out of the ordinary,
Fr. Tom Hurley
like cancelling all of your Sunday Masses
in favor of just doing one Mass, that can
be a real curve ball thrown at us. Trust me. I am a guy who
likes routine and making sure things go the right way. So to
all of you who took the risk and were able to make your way
to Old St. Pat’s last Sunday to celebrate our common bond
and common mission as Church, I am deeply grateful. And
to all who were not able to make it and having just one liturgy
at 10:00 a.m. didn’t work for you, I am truly sorry. We did
miss you!
To all the many volunteers and the great staff of Old St.
Pat’s who worked so hard to make our Pentecost Mass so
special, a big shout of appreciation goes out to you as well.
As you may or may not know, our original plan to celebrate
the outdoor Mass on DesPlaines Street was met with some
challenges. Thanks to the quick thinking of staff and a great
team effort by many, adjustments were made and the liturgy
was celebrated to the parking lot.
2
Despite some annoying winds and an uncooperative sound
system, we finally got it together and had a grand celebration.
I have a feeling that when the early church “hit the streets” to
begin their mission of building a Christian community, not all
the pieces were perfect for them either. Two thousand years
later, under much different circumstances, people gathered
together and a wonderful liturgy was celebrated. I have been
so pleasantly amazed at the many comments last Sunday
and the numerous emails I received this week acknowledging
how everyone so enjoyed our celebration of Pentecost! We
were on the evening news as well!! Many folks commented
that we should do this more often! (whoa???)
Just having a good majority of our community together in
one place for One Mass and one mission was gift enough.
As I mentioned at the end of the liturgy on Pentecost, just
having this great opportunity to serve at this church and be a
part of such a dynamic community is a deep honor. Looking
around and seeing so many people who come here from
near and far and who make up so many different parts of
our human family, is sheer joy and blessing for me. Thank
you, Old St. Pat’s, for that gift.
A Happy Father’s Day to all the special guys among us today.

My Father — My Hero
by Annie McDonnell
I was raised in a large Irish Catholic family in Iowa. My uncle, Fr. Mac as we called
him, was a Catholic priest, and his brother, my father, was my biggest influence
in my faith. Unfortunately my father passed when I was a senior in high school.
When I was fourteen, Fr. Mac helped me gain permission from the Bishop to
become a Eucharistic Minister, so I could bring home Communion and pray with
my father after school. Today I still cherish this memory and proud of the ministry
I was gifted as a young adult. It is an honor to share this ministry with the parish
of Old St. Pat’s.
Annie McDonnell
Two weeks before my father passed in 1993, I was asked by my teacher to write an
article on my hero. I thought I would share the article on this special day honoring
all fathers.
My Father- My Hero
By Annie McDonnell
To me, a hero is a person who admires the quality of life, no matter what struggles they
may face, are dedicated to the love of their Lord, who thinks of others before themselves,
and struggles to overcome the fight to not lose hope. All of these qualities list the
characteristics of my hero — my father.
My father has a lung disorder that cannot be helped because of the lack of research
on the disease. He has lost two brothers with the same disease, yet I have never seen
him shed a tear or fear for his life. Instead of looking at the negative side of things, he
manages to smile and always look at the positive. Never have I heard him mention
anything about fear. Yet I know he is scared; scared for others to be without him, and
scared to be alone.
What makes him so special is his faith in God. He believes in his Lord and knows that He won’t give him
anything he can’t handle; as difficult as the struggle may be.
I admire my father very much. He always tries to wear a smile and tries to reach new goals everyday, even if
those goals are next to impossible.
My father, to me, is an image of Jesus, a martyr. He is suffering so much, yet takes the time to share his love.
Just like Jesus, he is a preacher and a teacher. My father has taught others and me that pain hurts only as
much as you let it. He has taught me about the love of others and God. He has preached about the love and
quality of life.
Unfortunately my father’s time is drawing near to spend his eternal life with Jesus. Why he has to get his
call so soon, I will never understand. Yet I know that when he reaches the gates of Heaven, he will receive his
wings, and then his name among the list of saints.
Annie McDonnell is a new member of Old St. Pat’s, who was recently trained as a Eucharistic Minister. She
looks forward to serving in this ministry that has helped her feel connected to her late father.

One priority of the Journey Forward campaign impacts the preservation
of the Old St. Patrick’s sanctuary that so many call home. As part of the
preservation priority, Old St. Pat’s has already begun some near-term
enhancements of the church. With summer approaching, the need to keep
the church cool becomes more important. One of the projects to preserve
the sanctuary is to replace the compressor for the air conditioning (you may have noticed already
work being done). The preservation priority of the campaign will also address upgrades to the
Church Hall, including: new bathrooms, a nursing room for new mothers and better use of the
main floor space. There will be renderings of these enhancements soon, but please know that the
completion of these projects will be given top priority in the coming months.
To learn about the preservation priority and the rest of the exciting vision of the Journey Forward
campaign, please join us at our next informational event:

Old St. Pat’s Board of Advisors
With an eye toward the future, and embracing the longstanding tradition of the Church being in service
to the people of God, we are proud to introduce the Old St. Patʹs Board of Advisors. This Board has been
formed by a group of Old St. Patʹs members coming forward to serve. As the Board and committees of
the Board continues to grow, Old St. Patʹs members will be invited to serve.
Dave Baron Dave joined Old St. Patrick’s Church in 2009 after being inspired by the
consistent belief throughout Old St. Patʹs — from the Pastor to the pews — that our Catholic
faith pushes us to do good works and to be contributing members of our larger communities,
whether in Chicago, the U.S., or the world. Since then, Dave has served as a Lector, a
Eucharistic minister, a steering committee member for Young Leaders of Chicago (Old St.
Patʹs organization for young professional), and most recently, a Crossroads Runners team
member. Originally from Kankakee, Illinois, Dave now lives in Bucktown. After working as an associate at
the law firm of Sidley Austin LLP for four years, Dave joined the City of Chicago Law Department last fall
where he specializes in constitutional and commercial litigation.
Steve Bonneau
Inspired by Old St. Patʹs willingness and limitless capacity to help and serve others, Steve
became a member of Old St. Patrick’s Church in 2000. Steve lives in Ravenswood Manor
with his wife, Eve, and their son, Luke. Steve and Eve have been active volunteers in many
initiatives, including the Planned Giving Committee, Special Friends Masses, Men’s
Spirituality Group, and The Journey Forward Capital Campaign, as well as the Board.
Originally from Providence, Rhode Island, Steve moved to Chicago in 1999 after graduating from law
school in Ohio. Steve is currently Senior Vice President and Tax Counsel for Northern Trust.
Keara Ette
A member of Old St. Patrickʹs staff for the last seven years, Keara is the Director of Faith
Formation. She is inspired by the environment of empowerment at Old St. Patʹs — a place
she calls her second home. ʺThe sense that the ‘work’ of church belongs to all of us, as
we the baptized are given the responsibility and the honor of working to bring about the
kingdom of God — right here and right now.ʺ In the beginning, Keara’s ministry was focused
on young adults and adult sacramental formation, but more recently, Keara has enjoyed the opportunity
to connect with our spiritual and mission outreach; kinship; marriage, and liturgical
ministries. Originally from the South Side of Chicago, Keara, her husband, Michael, and their son, Daniel,
recently moved back to the neighborhood.
Kevin Hanley
An active participant in the Old St. Patrick’s community for 10 years, Kevin, his wife, Molly,
and their five children live in River Forest. In addition to being a member of the Board,
Kevin also serves as the Chair of the Finance committee. Kevin feels that Old St. Pat’s
is a welcoming community and place to celebrate and share his faith. He believes his
participation with the Board of Advisors will help spread the Old St. Patʹs mission within
our community, as well as outside of the community through our many programs at the Crossroad
Center. Kevin is First Vice President and Wealth Management Advisor with Merrill Lynch, the Sullivan
Hanley Group in Oak Brook, Illinois.

Arnette Heintze
Since 2004, Old St. Patrickʹs Church has been more than a place of worship for Arnette
and his family — it has been their spiritual home; where his wife, Tricia, committed to
the Catholic faith through RCIA; where he renewed his faith; the Church where their
children, Harper, Annabella and Gabriella, were baptized and attended school; and most
importantly, the place they found their Lord and his calling for them to become involved.
They became leaders in RCIA; participants in the Liturgical Process review; the Mission Forum; the
Children at the Crossroads Scholarship Foundation; the Pentecost Liturgy team; Beloved; Liturgy Work
Group; Social Concerns; Marriage Ministry; Siamsa na nGael; Deck The Hall; Emerald Ball;
The Journey Forward Capital Campaign; and a member of the Board of Advisors since 2010. Following
his retirement from the United States Secret Service in 2003, Arnette cofounded Hillard Heintze, where
he serves as the Chief Executive Officer.
Greg Hunt
Originally from Los Angeles, CA, Greg Hunt and his family — including his wife, Cindy, his
daughter Kenzie, and his brother‐in‐law, Walter — have been members of Old St. Pat’s since
2007. He finds inspiration in the liturgy, particularly the presiders and music ministry. Greg
participates in many of the Old St. Patʹs ministries and events, including: Foundations,
Hospitality Ministry; Volunteer Fair; Giving Tree; and World’s Largest Block Party. In his
spare time, he enjoys golf and music, as well as serving on Boards for Trinity Volunteer Corps and Trinity
High School.
Tim Keneally
Originally from Long Island, New York, Tim and his wife, Mary Ann, are the proud parents
of five children and nine grandchildren. A member of Old St. Patʹs since 2010, Tim and his
family have been active in many Old St. Patʹs initiatives, including Deck the Hall; Emerald
Ball; Celtic Celebration, The Journey Forward Capital Campaign; and the Board. Inspired
by Old St. Patʹs spiritual and community involvement, Tim accepted the opportunity to
serve, support and foster our Christian outreach activities in an effort to help make a difference in
others lives — both spiritually and personally. Tim currently serves as the President of KapStoneContainer
Corporation, headquartered in Northbrook, Illinois.
Bob Kolatorowicz
A member of Old St. Patʹs staff for more than 24 years, Bob has been inspired by the Old
St. Patrick’s commitment to be mission‐centered. “I’m proud that we can say we are not so
much a church with a mission, but a mission with a church . . . and a social concerns center
. . . and an educational center. And what’s this mission that calls us together? Put simply,
to cooperate with the spirit to help build up the Kingdom of God.” Bob feels it is a privilege
to serve the Old St. Patʹs mission in several different capacities, mostly centered on adult spirituality and
our social justice ministries. Bob, his wife, Ann, and daughter, Maya, are lifelong Chicago area residents.

Tim Liston
A lifelong residence of Chicago, Tim is Old St. Patʹs Director of Advancement and has
been part of the community for more than six years. Two of Tim’s passions are music and
food, which makes the Old St. Patʹs community a natural environment for Tim, as he loves
meeting new members and believes our collective voices help guide our mission. Actively
involved in all of Old St. Patʹs special events, Tim is inspired by our community’s willingness
to lend a hand to those in need.
Rose Loftus
For the last 12 years, Rose Loftus has found the Old St. Patrick’s community to be the
creative stimulus to challenge and engage her spirituality. Rose accepted the invitation
to join the Board as she believes the Board first and foremost must be passionately
engaged and connected to the community. Rose, and her husband Liam Healy, are
committed to advancing the mission of Old St. Patrick’s and support many of our
initiatives including the Family Advisory Board; LIFT; the Beloved Community; The Frances Xavier Warde
School (FXW); Emerald Ball; and Siamsa na nGael; and the Journey Forward Capital Campaign. Rose
and Liam have five children and four are currently attending FXW. In her spare time, Rose practices law
with her sister at Loftus & Loftus, Ltd.
Eileen O’Shea
For more than 15 years, Eileen has been inspired by the Old St. Patʹs community’s
emphasis on developing spirituality, engaging one another in community and reaching
out to the world around us with “radical hospitality.” Eileen accepted the invitation to
join the Board as she strongly believes that those in the “pews” should have a voice in our
journey. A recent member of the Board of Advisors, Eileen, and her partner, Marybeth,
are active in a wide variety of Old St. Patʹs initiatives, including Beloved; LIFT; Women’s Spiritually; LGBT
Outreach; Ignation Spirituality Group; Encore; Career Transitions Center, and all of our community’s
special events.
Jill Wrobel
An Old St. Patʹs member since 2003, Jill has served a variety of Old St. Patʹs ministries
including Partners; Foundations; Hospitality, and Wedding Volunteering. Jill lives in
Elmhurst, Illinois, with her husband, Jeff, three‐year‐old son, John, and two Wheaten
Terriers, Vox and Murphy. Jill enjoys traveling, hot yoga, reading non‐fiction, cooking,
and amateur photography. Old St. Patʹs is an important and influential part of Jillʹs
life, consistently meeting her where she is in her faith life and encouraging her to go deeper in her
experience with God. She is both humbled and excited to serve this community as part of the Board
of Advisors. Jill is a Director at Walgreens, responsible for the human resources and people‐related
aspects of domestic merger and acquisition transactions.

The seventh grade Girl Scouts at the Frances Xavier Warde
School partnered with Madonna House this winter as part
of the school’s Living the Legacy service initiative. Madonna
House, a transitional home for homeless women and
children, is run by Catholic Charities and located in Lincoln
Park. Since January, the Girl Scouts have volunteered their
time and energy serving the children staying there. Their
work on behalf of the families included a book drive, which
brought in hundreds of needed children’s books and teen
reference materials; weekly reading/tutoring sessions;
creating educational games to strengthen math and reading
skills; and hosting game and craft nights.
1.
2.
One of the Girl Scouts, Lisa Miller, said, “It doesn’t feel like
volunteering. I get to have fun with younger kids and they
have fun, too. These kids are just how I was as a child—
energetic, happy, and childish. This makes me want to help
them by making their day enjoyable in their tough situation.”
2.
Another volunteer, Madeline Reese, learned that helping
others helped her too. “I gain friendships and memories
from doing this, and now I know most of the kids by name! I
think people should care about service because it makes you
a better person.” The partnership between the FXW Girl Scouts and Madonna
House will continue through the summer. The students
will plant and tend a garden and work on cleanup projects
around the facility. The girls will resume weekly reading and
tutoring at the home in the fall. 3.

FXW students continue Living the Legacy of their school’s
namesake, Mother Frances Xavier Warde, by making a
difference in their community.

PLEASE HELP!
As Old St. Patrick’s is Chicago’s oldest
Catholic church and oldest public
building, this sacred space is special to
all who find their way here. Knowing
how all of us appreciate and revere this
sacred place, we ask for your help and
cooperation in maintaining this historic
church.
Did you know:
➢ spilled beverages stain the carpet and
marble floor?
➢ dropped food can be ground into
the carpet and some of that food,
especially gum, raisins, can never be
completely removed?
➢ keys, pens, and metal toys have
scarred many of the pews, and
these pews will have to be removed,
restored, and reinstalled?
It is important that we know the
consequences if we do not care for this
magnificent church.
Please help us preserve the beauty of this
grand church for generations to come.

29th Annual Chicago Hunger Walk
Sponsored by Greater Chicago Food Depository (GCFD)
Saturday, June 21, 2014
Soldier Field, 1400 South Museum Campus Drive, Chicago
Volunteers from Old St. Pat’s serve the Greater Chicago Food Depository on the second Tuesday and
the second Saturday of each month. In addition, volunteers answer the call for some of the GCFD’s
campus service opportunities such as salvaging leftover food during Food Rescues after industry food
shows…mostly at McCormick Place…and participating in the annual Hunger Walk. 2014 marks the tenth
consecutive year that Old St. Pat’s volunteers have worked as registrars for the Hunger Walk.
Do You Know… more than 807,600 men, women and children in Cook County are food insecure …
meaning they are not sure where their next meal will come from…that is 1 in 6 persons. A staggering 78% increase during the
last five years ago. The proceeds from the Hunger Walk assist in providing nutritious foods.
You are invited to join in stamping out hunger Cook County by participating in the 29th annual Chicago Hunger Walk on
Saturday, June 21. The route is 3.2 miles (5K) along beautiful Lake Michigan and historic Soldier Field…rain or shine!
You may choose to WALK...to WORK as a volunteer…to be a DONOR…or any combination. You may bring your families and
your friends. Even if you have never worked at the Greater Chicago Food Depository (GCFD) with Connections, or with Old
St. Pat’s Outreach (weekday or weekend) or as an individual...you are welcome to join our joint Old St. Pat’s contingency of
walkers, workers, and donors.
In 2013, 12,000 walkers participated in the WALK…and helped to raise more than $560,000. Each year, participation is
growing, but the need is increasing at a quicker pace. Beneficiaries of the Hunger Walk are the 650 GCFD food pantries,
shelters, and soup kitchens in Cook County that will receive 100% of the proceeds from this event. Underwriters will assume
all operating costs. Funds gathered directly help participating agencies provide nutritious food to 807,000 people in need in
Cook County. You may obtain pledges or walk/work in the name of an agency and/or be a donor yourself. Most agencies are
run entirely by volunteers and need to raise their own operating funds in addition to food assistance they receive through the
GCFD. Four of these agencies are supported by Old St. Pat’s Outreach.

St. Aloysius Gonzaga
(1568-1591)
Amid the brutality and
free-wheeling lifestyle of
Renaissance in Florence Italy,
St. Aloysius Gonzaga was
exposed to a “society of fraud, dagger,
poison and lust”. Yet, for him, Florence
became a place of transformation and
piety. As a son of a princely family, he
grew up in royal courts and army camps.
His father wanted Aloysius to be a military
hero.
His spiritual journey began early – by age
seven his prayer life was rich. At age nine
he came from his hometown of Castiglione
to Florence to be educated; by age 11 he
was teaching catechism to poor children,
fasting three days a week and practicing
great austerities. When he was 13 years
old he traveled with his parents and the
Empress of Austria to Spain and acted
as a page in the court of Philip II. The
more Aloysius saw of court life, the more
disillusioned he became, seeking relief in
learning about the lives of saints.
A book about the experience of Jesuit
missionaries in India suggested to him the
idea of entering the Society of Jesus. His
decision began a four-year contest with his
father. Eminent churchmen and laypeople
were pressed into service to dissuade
Aloysius. Finally he prevailed, was allowed
to renounce his right to succession and was
received into the Jesuit novitiate. He spent
four years in the study of philosophy and
had St. Robert Bellarmine (September 17)
as his spiritual adviser.
In 1591, a plague struck Rome. The Jesuits
opened a hospital of their own where the
Jesuits’ Father General and many other
Jesuits rendered personal service. When
Aloysius entered the Jesuit novitiate in
Rome, he was assigned to work in the
hospital. Aloysius was squeamish and 16thcentury hospitals were far from tidy and
antiseptic. In spite of his squeamishness,
Aloysius summoned all his courage and
set to work. He went out into the streets
and carried the sick and the dying to the
hospital. He washed the patients, dressed
them in fresh clothes, fed them and found
them a bed or at least a pallet to lie on.
He did not shrink from any task. Because
of the care he rendered, Aloysius caught
the disease himself. Yet, he maintained his
great discipline of prayer until his death
three months later at the age of 23.
For his compassion and courage in the
face of an incurable disease, St. Aloysius
Gonzaga has become the patron of both
AIDS sufferers and their caregivers. He is
also the Patron Saint of Teenagers.
