The early season started out great, but lately, we have been reading too many press clipping because our play
has dropped off, and we have not been ready for how a nationally-ranked team should perform.
An excellent Colorado College (currently 4-0 in the WCHA) came into Lynah Rink to open the season. It was
great to see senior forward John Esposito score the first goal of a 2-0 win after experiencing a tough injuryfilled season a year ago. Junior Andy Iles took up right where he left off last year by shutting out CC with just
19 saves. It was the first time we opened the regular season with a shutout since Ben Scrivens made 43 saves
vs. Princeton in 2008.
The second night was a hard-fought 3-2 win in a very physical game. We were not quite as sharp, but it was the kind of night
that we learned a lot of lessons from, and we came out on top. All five goals on the weekend came on the power play.
Traveling to Colgate the following Friday night, we won 3-1, riding the excellent performance of Iles who made 44 saves, just four
short of the school record set by John Detwiler vs. Dartmouth in 1959.
On Saturday, Colgate came to Lynah Rink, and we were down 2-0 in a penalty-filled first period. We got it going in the second
period, but had nothing to show for before a pair of goals in the third period for a 2-2 tie. In overtime, we had many excellent
chances, including a possible game-winner that was ruled no goal because the whistle had already blown.
The guys fought hard, and I was proud of the comeback. It was another game that deserved additional lessons taught such as
our work ethic in going back to retrieve pucks, and the importance of our wingers having the jump before the puck hits the ice on
the faceoffs.
We were off to our best start in four years and ranked No. 4 in the country.
The sky fell in on our first extended road trip. You learn much about your team by playing on the road. At Princeton, we came
out soft, but showed some life in the second period, but the Tiger goaltender stopped two breakaways.
Down 2-0 in the third period, we tallied three times in a 4-minute span to go up 3-2 with 9:34 left to play, but ended up losing, 53, as Princeton had three power-play goals. Our special teams have helped us on some nights, but not at Princeton.
Penalties were numerous the next night at Quinnipiac, as there was a combined five power-play opportunities in a scoreless first
period. The second period was much of the same, and the Bobcats capitalized with a pair of extra-man goals. In the third period, we cut the deficit to 3-1 on a senior forward Greg Miller goal, but the home team added another for a 4-1 victory. Iles finished with 34 saves, making 30 in the final 40 minutes.
We now take our No. 10 ranking into the always-challenging Harvard game at Lynah Rink, followed by ECAC first-place Dartmouth the following night. Our intensity and work ethic needs to increase during the game, and this will be an important stretch
for us with four of the next five contests at home. LET’S GO RED!!

CORNELL 3, COLGATE 1
Colgate outshot Cornell 45-14, but the Big Red came away with the win thanks to Andy Iles’ stellar performance. The ECAC
Hockey goaltender of the week due to his outstanding effort against Colorado College stopped all but one of the Raiders’ shots.
Colgate poured 24 shots at the Cornell netminder in the opening period, but the Big Red scored the only goal. Just 41 seconds
into the game, Dustin Mowrey scored his first goal of the season with assists going to Erik Axell and Joel Lowry. Darcy Murphy
tied the game with a power-play score at 6:54 of the second period. Tri-captain Thomas Larkin earned the only assist on the
play. The Big Red regained the lead 66 seconds later when Greg Miller scored his first goal of the season from Brian Ferlin and
freshman Gavin Stoick. The Raiders continued to press and pulled goaltender Eric Mihalik for an extra attacker late in the third
period, but Lowry clinched the win with an empty-net score at 19:31. Mihalik stopped 14 Cornell shots.
SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 3, 2012

Cole Bardreau and Nick D’Agostino each scored third-period goals as Cornell came from behind to tie the Raiders. Colgate
came out attacking in the opening period and was rewarded for its efforts with a score at 2:18. With Greg Miller in the penalty
box for hooking, Kyle Baun scored his fourth goal of the season with assists going to Tylor Spink and Spiro Goulakos. The
Raiders increased their lead to 2-0 with another man-advantage goal at 8:32 of the same period by Goulakos from Baun. The Big
Red, outshot 10-3 in the first period, began to take over the momentum and fired 13 shots at Colgate goaltender Eric Mihalik in
a scoreless second period. Bardreau cut the visitors’ lead to one goal with a power-play effort at 10:05 of the last period with
John McCarron and Joakim Ryan assisting. D’Agostino tied the game at 13:54 with a shot that beat Mihalik over his left shoulder. Ryan, who sent the play on its way, picked up the only assist. The two teams continued to battle for the remainder of the
final period and overtime, but there was no further scoring. The Big Red oushot the Raiders 4-3 in a spirited overtime that ended
with numerous discussions by players and coaches. Andy Iles made 23 saves, while Mihalik stopped 25.
FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 9, 2012

PRINCETON 5, CORNELL 3
Princeton led 2-0, trailed 3-2, and then scored three unanswered third-period goals to hand the Big Red its first setback of the season.
Andy Iles allowed four goals and made 25 saves, while the Tigers Mike Condon stopped 22 shots and Andrew Calof scored two
goals, including the game winner. Princeton led 2-0 after two periods on power-play goals by Calof at 12:34 of the opening period
and Michael Zajac, who tipped in a Kevin Ross shot, at 7:11 of the second. Cornell jumped back into the game with three goals in
the first 11 minutes of the last period. John Esposito, returning after a two-game absence, converted a pass from Joakim Ryan at 5:35
to cut the Tiger lead to one goal. Greg Miller intercepted a Princeton pass behind the Tigers’ net and tucked the puck into the corner
of the net to tie the game at 2-2. The Big Red went ahead 3-2 on another Tiger miscue. Cole Bardreau secured a loose puck and
passed it in front of the net to Armand deSwardt, who beat Condon at 10:26. Rob Kleebaum tied the game at 3-3 at 15:08, before the
ever-present Calof scored the winner on a power play just under two minutes later. Princeton wrapped up the scoring with an empt ynet goal at by Andrew Ammon with 40 seconds left to play.

The Bobcats outshot Cornell 38-23, scored two goals in the second period and two more in the third to hand the Big Red its second loss
in two nights. Andy Iles made 34 saves for Cornell, while Eric Hartzell stopped 22 for Quinnipiac. Kellen Jones opened the scoring
with a power-play goal at 8:03 with an assist from Zach Tolkinen. Ben Arnt made it 2-0 with his first score of the year with just under
five minutes left in the middle period. The Bobcats made it 3-0 at 3:38 of the final period on a goal by Jeremy Langlois, before Greg
Miller made it 3-1 27 seconds later with an assist from John Esposito at 4:05. Corey Hibbeler closed out the scoring at 8:11 with assists
from Kevin Bui and Alex Barron.

Hello Cornell Hockey Association,
The Cornell Women's Ice Hockey team is off to a fast start with a 6 - 1 record so far this year. We are very
pleased with the effort of our team in the face of many adverse situations early in our season.
Our first official weekend we went on the road to play Boston University. Some of the challenges we knew
going into the weekend were that Boston University was ranked #3 in the NCAA and they had been playing
games for a few weeks already. This was also our first game for our eight freshmen all of whom we knew
would play big roles on the ice for us. Then there was the challenge we did not expect. There was a fire
around 1 am at our hotel the night before the game, and we had to evacuate the hotel. Fortunately no one
was injured and they got the fire under control and we were able to go back to bed around 3 am.
Our first game we played at Agganis Arena in front of Boston University and they had their largest crowd ever at BU. We won the
game 5-2, and played very well for our first game. Our special teams were excellent as we had two shorthanded goals from Emily
Fulton and freshman Taylor Woods! The next day was a different story as we could not come up with the same consistency and we
lost 5-1. Overall getting a split at BU in our first weekend was a good start and the way the team played together was encouraging
going into our next week.
We returned to Cornell late Sunday night from Boston and did not have a lot of time before our next game versus St. Lawrence on
Tuesday. The last time we faced them was the ECAC Championship game last year and we definitely were looking for a different
result this year. We did get up on them quickly and never looked back winning 5-1. Emily Fulton and Brianne Jenner both had
strong games up front and Alyssa Gagliardi got on the board for us from the point as well. Lauren Slebodnick looked very solid in
goal coming up with some big saves for us throughout the game.
After those three non conference games we had two back to back home weekends with our first ECAC and Ivy League games. The
first weekend we played opponents Brown and Yale. Brown has been getting stronger over the last few years and they play a disciplined style of game. As we expected it was a close game until the end as we needed an empty net goal from Jillian Saulnier to get
the 2-0 win. We carried much of the play but they played well defensively and they had very good goaltending.
The next day we had to play Yale and they had just come off a big victory versus Colgate. We got off to a rough start as we got
down 1-0 early in the game with a strange goal on the power play when a puck bounced off our defenseman to the front of our net
for a goal. We took way too many penalties throughout the entire game and the score was 2-2 late in the third when we got a
power play opportunity of our own and Jill Saulnier scored what proved to be the game winning goal. It ended 3-2 and we were
now 2-0 both in the Ivy League and the ECAC.
Finally our last weekend we played Princeton and Quinnipiac. Going into the weekend, we were not sure how many players we
would lose to Team Canada for the Four Nations Cup in Finland. They ended up taking junior Brianne Jenner for the tournament
so we would need to play without her. In the Four Nations Cup Canada ended up losing 3-0 to the USA in the championship game.
Princeton has had a tough start to their season and it continued in our game as well. We beat them 4-0. We had a strong second
period scoring 3 goals . Two of our freshmen defensemen, Cassandra Poudrier and Morgan Richardson, scored their first goals of
the year during that second period barrage.
The next day we played Quinnipiac at Lynah. It was our game in support of the United Way of Tompkins County and we were
able to help raise $1000 for the United Way! Thanks to all of the volunteers who supported this initiative and to the fans who came
to the game. It was a very interesting game as we went up 2-0 only to have Quinnipiac come back with three straight goals to go
up 3-2. We battled hard and stayed the course and managed to get a goal from Alyssa Gagliardi on a late power play to get the
victory 4-3.

We have managed to get some hard fought wins early in the year. This has been especially tough considering we have eight
freshmen playing large roles, we had some injuries to key players, we had a fire in the hotel on our first road trip, and we had to
play without one of the best forwards in the NCAA in Brianne Jenner. This is a great sign from a young team that other players
were able to step up and take on significant roles. That said, we have some very tough road trips ahead of us and we will need to
be our best in the second half of this semester.
This Friday we play Colgate at 3 pm, and we will be collecting toys and monetary donations for the "Cops, Kids, and Toys"
drive. Please help us with this worthy cause and get out and support Cornell Hockey!

Cornell, which had opened its ECAC Hockey season the previous weekend with victories over Brown 2-0 and Yale 3-2, continued its winning ways by outskating the Tigers to go 3-0 in league play. The Big Red outshot Princeton 45-10 and scored once in
the first period and three times in the second. Jillian Saulnier started the scoring 61 seconds into the game when she collected a
rebound and beat Tigers’ goaltender Kimberly Newell. Defenseman Hayleigh Cudmore, who started the play with a shot from
the point, picked up an assist as did Alyssa Gagliardi. Saulnier made it 2-0 with her fourth of the season at 1:46 of the middle
period with helpers from Anna Zorn and Cudmore. Freshman Cassandra Poudrier, playing in the first game of her Cornell career, converted a rebound off forward Taylor Woods at 7:42 for a commanding 3-0 Cornell advantage. The Big Red scored its
final goal of the game when Laura Fortino and Saulnier combined to set up freshman Morgan Richardson, who fired a shot from
the blueline that worked its way through a crowd past Newell. Goaltenders Lauren Slebodnick and Stefannie Moak combined
for 10 saves for Cornell, while Newell stopped 41, including 16 in the opening period and 18 in the last period.

The Big Red rallied with third-period goals by Cassandra Poudrier and Alyssa Gagliardi to turn back the visiting Bobcats. Seldom-used
goaltender Katelyn Pippy came on in relief of Stefannie Moak, who allowed three goals by Quinnipiac, and kept the Bobcats off the
scoreboard by making 11 saves in the final 33:44 of action. Cornell scored twice in less than a minute for a 2-0 lead after the first 20
minutes. Freshman Jess Brown scored at 13:06 of the first period when she hammered a rebound of Jillian Saulnier’s shot into the net.
Just 57 seconds later, Emily Fulton made it 2-0 with assists going to Hayleigh Cudmore and Kelly Murray. The Bobcats rallied with
three second-period goals to move in front 3-2. Nicole Connery scored at nine seconds to make it 2-1. Nicole Costa tied the game at
1:59 before scoring again at 6:07 to put the visitors in the lead. High scoring Kelly Babstock assisted on all three Bobcat goals. At this
point, Cornell coach Doug Derraugh inserted Pippy for Moak in goal. After the game, an elated Pippy told Cornell Sports Communications, “(My teammates) said that they were really proud of me and they knew I had it in me. I was really happy to step up and, more
