MESSAGE FROM THE QTF PRESIDENT
Another exciting year of tennis around the globe begins right here with
the Qatar ExxonMobil Open in Doha. This year’s edition promises to be
very special, as we celebrate the 20th anniversary of the tournament.
I take this opportunity to thank H. H. Sheikh Tamim Bin Hamad Bin
Khalifa Al Thani, the Heir Apparent and the President of the Qatar
Olympic Committee, and H. E. Sheikh Saoud Bin Abdulrahman Al –
Thani, the Secretary General of the Qatar Olympic Committee for their
continued support over the past decades. I would also like to welcome
all members of the local and international media and broadcast to this anniversary edition
of the tournament. I hope you enjoy the tennis, and the hospitality of the people of the State
of Qatar. I wish you all the best for your coverage of the tournament.

MESSAGE FROM THE TOURNAMENT DIRECTOR
On behalf of the Qatar Tennis Federation, it is a great pleasure for me
to welcome you back to Qatar and, the Qatar ExxonMobil Open 2012.
Over the past 20 years, the support, commitment and coverage that
we have received from members of the local and international media
and broadcast has been central to the growth of our event and the
promotion of tennis around the world. As a result, it is with great honor
that we celebrate the 20th anniversary of this tournament with you.

Public Village
The Public Village is divided into three main
zones, all of which offer a great variety of
activities and entertainment. The first zone
is the food court that is located to the left
of the Village. At the food court, you will be
able to purchase food and beverages from
a wide range of chains including Pizza
Hut, Asiana, Hardees, Sterling as well as
TCBY and Coffee Beanery.
The second zone of the Public Village
includes various sponsor booths. While
you are here, do not miss out on the
opportunity of visiting the ExxonMobil
stand and taking a ride on the fast lane
with the F1 Mobil Car that is located there.
The third zone in the Public Village is the
Traditional Village and the Kid’s Zone. The
Traditional Village is built for the public to
experience one of Qatar’s most beloved
cultural attractions. In addition, the Kid’s
Zone will host several activities for kids
including inflatable castles, obstacle
courses, etc.

Medical Services
The Qatar Tennis Federation provides around-the-clock medical services for anybody that
may require medical attention inside the venue. There are two main medical areas in the
venue - the Red Crescent tent located behind the scoreboard screen in the Public Village,
and the Hamad Medical Doctor’s office located in the tunnel beside Gate 4.
The Hamad Medical Corporation also has ambulance services present on site for any
immediate transportation to the Hospital. If you feel unwell while in the Complex or at
the Hotel, please notify a member of the Media Center staff or the Hotel Help Desk staff
respectively.

functioning for the entire duration of the tournament.

The Media Center
Summary of Media Center Facilities
The Media Center is located through the
Traditional Village beside the practice
courts. The Media Center is fully equipped
with all the necessary tools for journalists,
photographers and broadcasters to cover
the event in the best possible way.
Our staff members present at the Media
Center are able to provide all local and
international media with any information or
assistance that they might require.
The Media Center will be operational from
the 31st of December through to the 7th of
January from 10.00am till one hour after the
last match of the day.

Media Center Map
The Media Center Reception Desk is
located in the entrance hall of the Media
Center. All staff members located at the
Desk will be able to provide members of the
media with any assistance or information
that they may need.
The Press Conference Room is located
inside the Media Center and is where all
Press Conferences will be held after the
end of each match. The room has a seating
capacity of 30 and seats are occupied on
a first-come-first-serve basis. After the
completion of a match, the name of the
player scheduled for a press conference
will be announced and all journalists and
camera crew should take their seats before
the player’s arrival.
Proper procedure requires that journalists
wait for a microphone from one of the hosts
in the room before asking a question. The
use of cell phones in the press conference
room is forbidden. This also applies to the
Press Stands on Center Court.
Lockers for media personnel are located

inside the Media Center. Keys to these 30
lockers may be collected and returned at
the Media Center Reception Desk. Please
note that distribution of lockers is on a
first-come-first-serve basis.
Transcripts are available in Arabic and
English at the Media Center Reception
Desk and also in the pigeon-holes at the
entrance to the Media Center. If you would
like transcripts to be sent to you via email,
please inform any of the Media Center
Reception Desk Staff.
International Telephone and Fax
Services are available at the Media
Center Reception Desk. Please inquire
with any staff member at the Desk, if you
would like to use these services. To call any
overseas number, please dial 00 followed
by the country code. An example of an
international call to a number in Qatar
would be (00) (974) (8 digit number).
Dining Facilities are available for media
personnel inside the Media Center. In order
to access media dining, please show your
meal voucher to the dining steward who is
present at the entrance to the Dining Area.
Following are media dining timings:
Lunch: 12.00pm – 3.00pm
Dinner: 6.00pm – 9.00pm
Meal vouchers are available to media
personnel upon the discretion of the Qatar
Tennis Federation. Please contact a staff
member at the Reception Desk to inquire
about your meal vouchers.

Media Positions on the Field of Play
Photographers’ Pit On Center Court
Final Trophy Ceremony will take place
is located in Sector A of the court. Please
note that this area is reserved only for
photographers. Journalists are not
allowed to access this area under any
circumstances.
immediately after the Men’s Singles Finals
on the 7th of January. After the completion
of match play, photographers will be
allowed onto a reserved area of the court
to cover the Finals Trophy Ceremony. It is
mandatory for all photographers to wear
tennis shoes during the Ceremony and
use of a tripod is not permitted.

during the Ceremony.

Journalists’ Seating On Center Court
is with the use of a Center Court ticket,
which may be requested from the Media
Center Reception Desk. Please be aware
that your credential cannot be used to sit
on Center Court.

numbers on your credential signify access

Credentials for international media that

can be collected at the Credential Office
located at the Main Spectator Entrance of
the venue.
Accessing the Media Center with Your
Credential
The Media Center may be accessed through
two access points – at Al-Dana Club or at
the employee entrance next to Bukhara
restaurant.
If you are driving to the venue, you may
park in one of the allotted parking spots in
the Al-Dana Club parking lot and enter the
Media Center through the Al-Dana Fitness
Club entrance.
In addition, you may also park in the public
parking lots located near Bennigans or
Fuddruckers restaurants and enter the
venue through the workforce entrance.
Once you enter the venue, please follow
the signboards leading to the Media Center
or inquire with any of our QTF Spectator
Committee staff.
Please note that without your credential
you will not be permitted to enter the venue
through either of these access points.

After a day spent working at the tournament
or exploring Qatar, guests at the RitzCarlton Doha can rejuvenate their bodies
at the hotel’s spa, indulge in an array of
exceptional dining options at the various
restaurants located in the hotel or simply
take in the view from the privacy of their
own room at this luxury hotel.

The Ritz-Carlton Doha is the official hotel for
all media personnel at the Qatar ExxonMobil
Open 2012. The hotel is renowned for
maintaining the city’s culture and traditions
while also offering modern amenities. It
provides guests with convenient access to
all that this unforgettable destination has
to offer.
Official Media Transportation
Bus shuttles are provided for all media personnel throughout the duration of the
tournament. The shuttles will travel between the Khalifa International Tennis and Squash
Complex and the Ritz-Carlton Doha and will make a brief stop at the Venue Spectator
Entrance.

1. DRAW CEREMONY

2. MEDIA TRIP
A media trip will be organized on Thursday,
5th January for members of the media to
relax and enjoy the great culture, weather
and atmosphere of Qatar. Please vote for
your favorite media trip option at the Media
Center Reception Desk. The option with the
most votes will be the trip that is selected.
In addition, there are several options for
water sport activities that will make the
tour even more exciting and enjoyable.
Please note that the cost for these options
will have to be incurred separately by each
guest. Some available options include:
Speed boat to transfer guests from the
Dhow to the Island and back – QR 1200
Banana Boat – QR 1500
Doughnut with Speed Boat – QR 1500
Jet Ski – QR 350 per hour
Long Desert Safari
Duration: Around 6 hours
Itinerary: A classic tour in Qatar, the Desert
Safari is the best way to experience the
landscapes of this country. This tour takes
you to the South of Qatar towards the Inland
sea or Khor Al Udeid, which is a natural
inlet surrounded by rolling sand dunes and
is one of the most spectacular natural sites
in Qatar. After some heart-stopping dune
bashing, you will make a stopover at a camp
in the Khor. You will also have an opportunity
to swim in the Inland Sea and take a camel
ride at the camp.

Duration: Around 6 hours
Itinerary: The Arabian Dhow Cruise is one
of the most relaxing and enjoyable activities
in Doha. Once onboard a traditional Dhow,
guests will be taken for a cruise around the
Doha Bay before proceeding to Al Saflia
Island. In the meantime, the onboard chef
will start preparing a BBQ lunch. Once the
dhow is anchored near the Island, you will
be able to take a swim in the backwaters of
the Arabian Gulf or lounge on the top deck
of the Dhow.

Climate
The climate is characterized by a mild winter and a hot summer with
only a few days of rainfall occurring during mid-winter in January.
The weather is generally pleasant between October and April.
Doha, the capital city and seat of the State Government includes
the country's main seaport and international airport, and is Qatar's
cultural, commercial and financial centre.
Al Khor is a coastal municipality 57 kms north of Doha. Its most
important city is Ras Laffan, which is strategically located on the
north shore of the Qatari Peninsula. Due to its proximity to the
North Field (the largest natural gas field in the world), Ras Laffan is
the headquarters for many petroleum-based multi-nationals.
Major Cities
Mesaieed has a large seaport and is the principal terminal for
the export of oil and other hydrocarbon products from Qatar. The
beaches at Mesaieed with their fine sand dunes and the Inland Sea
are important tourist spots in Qatar.
Al Wakra situated between Doha and Mesaieed, is another
municipality known for its small harbor and fishing.

Dukhan is the onshore oil production centre of Qatar and is situated
halfway along the western coastline of the Peninsula. It has largely
developed since 1947, when the first mining of the country's oil
reserves began.
Shopping In Qatar
Souq Waqif
Located behind the Corniche, off Grand
Hamed St., Souq Waqif is a charming
labyrinth of narrow streets where visitors
can bargain and purchase an amazingly
diverse range of products including fresh
spices, dried fruits and nuts, local perfumes
and clothing, antiques and frankincense
pots, as well as Bedouin weaving and
handmade Dhows.
The Souq was renovated and reconstructed
in a style that is reminiscent of traditional
Qatari souqs in the past. In addition to handicrafts and memorabilia, the souq is a great
place to try cuisines from different parts of
the Arab world.
The Souq is open daily from 10am to 12pm
and later in the evening from 4pm to 10pm.
Gold Souq
The Gold Souq located next to the Central
Bus Station, behind Alfardan Centre,
Wholesale Market
The Wholesale Souq, off of Salwa Rd,
is a beehive of activity, attracting both
commercial and private buyers. The
Market has a vegetable, fish and meat
Souq and has the feel of a village market
– with vendors peddling their wares from
beneath shaded awnings, offering a colorful
and exotic selection of local and imported
products.
Omani Souq
Aromas, colours and sights are abundant
at the small Omani Souq, situated behind
the Central Market. Although small in
area, the Omani souq offers a large variety
of merchandise, including spices, nuts,
perfumes, pottery, plants, camel sticks and
incense burners.

Traditional Markets
specializes in selling imported and locally
crafted gold, silver and pearl jewelry. The
Lonely Planet guides mention that the Gold
Souq, is a “pageant of glorious design and
spectacular craftsmanship is fun to see
even without the intention to buy. The souq
comes alive later in the evening, especially
before a holiday, when men traditionally
express the value of their relationships
through buying 22kt gold bangles, or a
‘set’ comprised of earrings, necklace and
bracelet for the women in their family.”

Qatar are open from Saturday to Thursday,
10am to 1pm and then 4pm to 10pm, and on
Fridays from 4pm to 10pm.
