SPACES connects contemporary art practice with the real
world.
All 2016 R&D projects will address the theme of “invisibility”
in some way, rendering visible issues that we cannot possibly
fathom or sometimes choose to ignore.

This quarter, local collaborative Geologic Cognition Society
will reconstruct a salt deposit in the SPACES gallery, taking
us on a journey through geologic deep time to experience the
formation of the salt beneath Lake Erie. During the Republican
National Convention, Kate Sopko will depict the everyday
realities of our shrinking city, to challenge broken systems
that fuel inequality. Portland-based curator Yaelle Amir will
reveal the hidden labor produced by the digital revolution,
and Canadian artist Felix Kalmenson will provide tactics for
us to disappear in the age of total information awareness.
This is the first time we’ve applied an annual organizing
theme to R&D. We think it will inspire a dynamic year of
art commissions and programs that encourage strong
interactions between artists and audiences, where art is the
connective experience.

Theodoros Stamatogiannis is will delve deep into the
intersection of sculpture and architecture during his SWAP
residency by focusing on the role that storefronts play in the
definition of private and public spaces. Using architectural
components such as floors, doors, windows and awnings, he
will interrogate the way we use or perceive these elements.
The inspiration for this body of work came from the
worldwide financial crisis in 2008, and its effect on the small
shops and streets that once bustled with activity and now
are boarded. His practice will expand to the post-industrial
landscape of Cleveland, where the architecture of commerce
is affected by population loss and high unemployment rates.
The SPACES World Artists Program (SWAP) offers
residencies to international, national and local artists.
SWAP supports artists in the creation, presentation,
and discussion of new work. Theodoros Stamatogiannis
is SPACES’ 54th SWAP Artist-in-Residence.

the city we experience today.

Geologic Cognition Society (Cleveland, OH)

UNDERNEATH IS BEFORE focuses on one moment in geologic
time: the moment when the massive salt deposits under
Lake Erie were formed. Geologic Cognition Society will
construct an immersive enviornment that pieces together
a sensory story of layering and accumulation of salt in this
region. The project culminates in the quieting hollows of a
salt chamber reconstructed from salt slabs mined for this
installation. Visitors will experience a physical connection
with 300 million year-old slabs of salt that were mined in
present time underneath nearly 2,000 feet of lake water,
glacial clay, and Cleveland bedrock.
The R&D (Research & Development) program
invites artists, curators and other cultural producers
to articulate their investigation of ideas through a
supported project that may take the form of solo,
group, or collaborative endeavors.

g00g13 34r+h is a collection of video works
with the intersecting subject matter of
space and terrain. Engaging a variety of
perspectives from the microscopic, to the
outsider, to the omniscient, these works
look, watch, and examine up close and
far out. Framing the works with a title that
evokes a ubiquitous mapping mechanism
questions how we see and create an object,
a place, or a landscape.
