Heart of the Matter
Dear Friends,
L
e Bonheur Children’s Hospital turns 60 this year.
When the doors to the hospital opened for the first time in 1952, it represented a turning point for our
city and a significant commitment to our children — all children. e new Le Bonheur was a hospital
designed for and dedicated especially to them.
It was hailed at the time as the most modern
children’s hospital in the world. Sixty years
later, we can proudly say that Memphis still
believes in its future and has again built a
most modern hospital to take care of our
most precious resource.
is issue features Memphians who have
made a significant investment in Le Bonheur.
On page 7 you’ll read about our 2012
Luminaire Award recipients, Mary Shainberg
and David Stevens. In our cover story you’ll
read about Amy and Bill Rhodes, whose
children are both Le Bonheur patients. In

received, Amy and Bill made a generous gi
to the capital campaign to help fund the new
hospital. eir family’s personal experience made them aware of the importance of having a top-rated
children’s hospital like Le Bonheur in their own backyard. eir story begins on page 4. eir gi — along
with hundreds of others — is acknowledged in the donor list beginning on page 8.
While hospitals are important, it is the specialized equipment and the highly trained clinicians and
scientists who provide the depth of knowledge and experience needed to help children get healthy and
stay strong. All of these things require ongoing investment. is year’s Donor Report issue of Le Bonheur
magazine recognizes you, our philanthropic partners, who have helped us deliver on our promise of
better health for all children.
It is a high calling. Children need specialized care and their families need comfort and support. Today, we
remain steadfast in our mission to treat every patient and every family with the dignity, respect and care
each one deserves. We appreciate your partnership and acknowledge your continued devotion.
anks, once again, for everything you do.

Le Bonheur Awarded $250,000
from dohmen Foundation
e Dohmen Company Foundation, the charitable arm of Dohmen, a
154-year-old family-owned health-care services company, recently
awarded Le Bonheur Children’s Hospital a $250,000 grant to be used
over the next two years for its Nurse-Family Partnership program.
e grant will enable Le Bonheur’s NFP — coordinated by Le Bonheur’s
Community Health and Well-Being — to serve an additional 50
families, allowing a substantial increase over its current enrollment
of 126 families.
e NFP is a home visitation program servicing first-time,
low-income mothers residing in Memphis and Shelby County.
Dohmen’s DDN division, the largest privately held provider of business
services to life-science companies, is also located in Memphis, Tenn.
e goal of the NFP

awareness regarding the dangers of alcohol consumption and
strengthens parent-child attachments to help reduce child abuse and
neglect.
“Our goal is to promote the physical, mental, emotional and social
well-being of children and families through collaboration within our
community,” says Corey D. Johnson, executive director of Le Bonheur’s
Community Health and Well-Being. “is generous contribution will
enable us to extend our support services to many more families
throughout our community, directly and positively impacting the future
lives of many mothers and their unborn babies.”

my and Bill Rhodes understand exactly what it means to have a world-class children’s
hospital located in their hometown. Both their pre-teen son and teenage daughter have
been patients at Le Bonheur and their daughter receives ongoing care here for epilepsy.
“You wake up one morning and everyone’s healthy and the next day you wake up and learn,
your daughter has epilepsy,” Amy says. “We were scared to death.”
Aer consulting with Dr. James Wheless, the medical director of Le Bonheur’s
Neuroscience Institute, Bill and Amy, like any concerned parents,
sought a second opinion.
“We knew we were receiving the best care at Le Bonheur,” Amy
says, “but we had so many unanswered questions. is was
definitely a life-changing event for our family and we were
hungry for knowledge.”
“What we learned when we visited the Mayo Clinic was that
what we had in Memphis at Le Bonheur under the direction of
Dr. Wheless was world-class,” Bill adds.
Aer their daughter was officially diagnosed at Le Bonheur
in 2010, the exceptional care she has received since under Dr.
Wheless’ direction enabled her to run the Memphis
Half Marathon this past December with her
mom and dad.
Prior to their daughter’s treatment here,
their son, then 8, fell from a zip line at school
and hit his head on the concrete − any
parent’s nightmare. e paramedics arrived
first and by the time Bill arrived, their son
was already inside the ambulance, strapped
to a back board, wearing a neck brace and
breathing through an oxygen tube.
“He had been unconscious and they told
us he needed to get to Le Bonheur’s
Emergency Department immediately,”
Bill says.
Once their son had been examined
and moved to the ICU, the physicians
gave Bill and Amy all the information
they needed to understand their son’s
trauma and what to expect over the
Amy and Bill Rhodes
next few hours.
“e ICU at Le Bonheur is really remarkable and the service is unbelievable,” Bill says. “e
entire medical team comforted us and found us a place where we could rest. While we were
there, it was amazing to see all the different challenges the people around us were facing. It
reminded us how vulnerable we are. Every family has a story.”
Prior to their son’s accident, Amy had toured the hospital in the Le Bonheur 101 program,
designed to provide a behind-the-scenes view to Le Bonheur donors and supporters. Because
she had met many of Le Bonheur’s
leading physicians and had been
introduced to various units in the
hospital during her tour, the comfort
level Amy and Bill had with their son’s
care givers was considerably greater than
it might have been if Amy had never
been inside the hospital.
“e doctors in the Emergency
Department were outstanding and the
nurses were incredible,” Amy says. “We
took great comfort knowing the highly
skilled, incredibly compassionate Le
Bonheur nurses were in charge of our
son’s care.”
dr. James Wheless
In gratitude for the care both their
children received at Le Bonheur, Amy
and Bill made a significant gi to the capital campaign to build the new hospital. Because both
of their children required the care of subspecialists in neuroscience, the couple selected the EEG
Clinic as their naming opportunity for their gi.
eir decision to make a gi in honor of Dr. Wheless and his team was an easy one.
“We wanted to give back to Le Bonheur,” Bill says. “We have been so incredibly blessed and
we believe it is our responsibility to give back. We always look for causes that help a broad
population, and who doesn’t want to help children? Because we’ve been personally touched by
Le Bonheur and we believe in their mission, we’re happy to participate.”
“We’re so grateful to Dr. Wheless and the Neuroscience Institute,” Amy adds. “We’ll be
dealing with our daughter’s care forever and we depend upon Le Bonheur.”
Since making their gi, the couple has seen how their donation has made a difference.
Just walking through the hospital you quickly notice how positive the environment is, even
for the sick children,” Bill says. “e impact that Le Bonheur has on our community not only
helps our children, it, along with the many other important medical community assets, plays a
vital role in the economic prosperity of this region.”
With the new hospital now a reality, Amy says she and her husband feel privileged to have
played a role. “Le Bonheur had the vision and we just helped,” she says. “I am proud for the
children of Memphis to have Le Bonheur and I am proud for the city of Memphis to have such
an incredible resource as Le Bonheur.”
“We have one of the best children’s hospitals in the country and the more we support it, the
stronger it will become. Having community resources like Le Bonheur helps entice potential
WWW.LEBONHEUR.ORG/GIVETODAY I 5
newcomers to join our community,” Bill says. “In Memphis, we are incredibly fortunate to have
such a strong health-care community and I believe the strength of our medical community is a
significant point of differentiation from other cities.”
is past year, Amy joined the Le Bonheur Foundation Board. “It’s an honor to serve
Le Bonheur in a different way,” she says. “It’s one thing to give money but another thing to give
your time and attention.”
Amy additionally serves on the University of Memphis Board of Visitors, Shelby Farms Park
Conservancy Board, St. Mary’s Episcopal School Board of Trustees and the University of
Tennessee Alliance of Women Philanthropists Executive Board.
Bill is Chairman, President and Chief Executive Officer of AutoZone, Inc., a position he has
held since 2007, following more than
12 years with the company where he
served in a variety of executive-level
roles. He also is the immediate past
chairman of Memphis Tomorrow,
Vice Chairman for Youth Programs,
Inc. (host organization for the FedEx
St. Jude Classic) and Treasurer for
the National Civil Rights Museum
Board, as well as other industry and
public boards.
Bill is a graduate of the University
of Tennessee at Martin with an
accounting degree. He also earned a
master of business administration
degree from the University of
Memphis where he met Amy, his
wife of 18 years, on a blind date

while attending graduate school.
Amy is a speech pathologist who has
worked with the Memphis Oral School for the Deaf and Shelby County Schools.
It’s not surprising to learn that the couple mentions the founder of AutoZone as their role
model for giving.
“AutoZone really has a strong culture of giving,” Bill says. “We’ve both learned the
importance of giving from Pitt and Barbara Hyde. ey certainly lead by example.”
While Bill and Amy would prefer to remain anonymous, they were willing to share their
story with the hope of inspiring others to follow their giving to Le Bonheur.
“Maybe our story will encourage others to get involved,” Bill says.
“You don’t know what Le Bonheur means until you need it,” Amy adds. “Before we used
their services, we knew it was a wonderful place but we really had no idea how wonderful. You
hope you will never have to use their services but if that day comes, as it has for us, you quickly
realize how blessed we are in this community to have Le Bonheur. As a parent, you take tremendous comfort knowing your child is getting the very best care possible.”

Luminaire Awards Recognize
Le Bonheur Philanthropists
M
ary Shainberg and David Stevens were honored with the 2012 Luminaire Awards during a
ceremony Feb. 11 at the Memphis Hunt and Polo Club.
“e Luminaire Awards honor excellence in philanthropy, service and advocacy, key elements in the future
growth and progress of Le Bonheur Children’s,” says Le Bonheur’s President and CEO Meri Armour. “e award
also illuminates the role Le Bonheur plays in the community and its impact on pediatric care nationwide.”
Mary and David are two individuals who have shaped Le Bonheur’s history and who continue to further
Le Bonheur’s mission for generations to come. eir belief in the possibilities of all that Le Bonheur can achieve
has inspired the hospital’s staff, physicians, supporters and friends throughout Memphis and the Mid-South area
and their efforts have le a lasting legacy for all our patients today and in the future.
“As advocates for Le Bonheur, both Mary and David have inspired a passion within the community to invest in
the hospital’s mission,” says Le Bonheur Foundation Executive Director Kavanaugh Casey.
F
or more than 25 years, Mary Shainberg’s philanthropy has
been inspired by the philosophy that “you make a living by
what you get. You make a life by what you give.”
Mary and her late husband, Herbert,
were among Memphis’ leading patrons
who championed children with
developmental disorders. In 1996, 11
years aer Herbert’s death, Mary
established the Herbert and Mary
Shainberg Neuroscience Research
Fund at Le Bonheur and since then has
Mary shainberg
continued to carry forward their
mission to help children stricken with
neurological problems and physical disabilities.
anks to the Shainberg Fund, Le Bonheur neuroscientists
and physicians can continue to tackle childhood neurological
problems during the early stages of a child’s life, which in turn
helps improve these patients’ quality of life and gives them a
greater chance at living a normal life.
Most recently, Mary’s generous support of Le Bonheur
Children’s capital campaign to build a new hospital, along with
her sponsorship of a special piece of art displayed on the
hospital’s 10th floor, speaks volumes about her dedication to
helping build a first-class hospital for children in Memphis. A
member of Temple Israel synagogue, Mary’s contribution to the
new hospital was honored through the naming of the Herbert
and Mary Shainberg Chapel, a sanctuary for the spiritual
healing of Le Bonheur families.
“I have always believed that children are our future,” Mary
says. “ere is nothing that pleases me more than to see that
the fruit of our giving is making a difference in the lives of
children.”
D
avid Stevens has championed Le Bonheur Children’s
Hospital for more than three decades.
He got his first taste of Le Bonheur when he was recruited
to join the hospital administrative staff in 1979
and for the next 18 years he served
Le Bonheur in a myriad of capacities
before founding Accredo Health, Inc.,
in 1996.
David joined the Le Bonheur
Foundation Board of Directors in
2004 and soon found himself
david stevens
spearheading the capital campaign to
build the new $340 million hospital.
en as now, David staunchly believed that the Le Bonheur
board had an obligation to provide the finest pediatric hospital
in the country and to make sure that the region’s children
received the best health care available. He led the charge to
build the right facility that would make Le Bonheur a jewel for
the entire community.
As first a board member and then campaign chairman, it
wasn’t long before David was named chairman of the foundation board. roughout his tenure, David’s constant vision and
commitment was to build a hospital that would serve all the
children of Memphis and the region for the next 50 years and
beyond.
Even though the capital campaign has ended, David is
still at it, working diligently behind the scenes to ensure
Le Bonheur’s future.
“With the opening of the new hospital, Le Bonheur’s needs
do not diminish,” he says. “We must now focus on raising
support to fund the expansion of Le Bonheur’s clinical
programs and research capabilities. Most of all, it’s important to
make sure we have funding so all patients, regardless of their
family’s ability to pay, receive the same high level of care.”

In Gratitude
T
he patients, families, physicians, staff and foundation board of Le Bonheur Children’s are most
grateful to those who enabled us to make our dream for a new facility come true. roughout our

give our patients the exceptional health care they deserve and improve the medical outcomes for
thousands of children in years to come.
Your incredible support over the years has brought us to where we are today and we gratefully
acknowledge all who helped make it happen.
To recognize the individuals, organizations, corporations and foundations that helped us succeed,
Le Bonheur Foundation has established honor societies to recognize their contributions. Membership in
these giving societies indicates their belief in our mission and their gis to Le Bonheur Children’s have
made this a place of healing and hope.
Le Bonheur Children’s Donor Giving Societies
The Balloon & Key Society
e Balloon & Key Society members are among Le Bonheur Children’s most
generous and loyal benefactors. ese individuals, foundations, organizations and
corporations have demonstrated their leadership support of Le Bonheur Children’s
by making lifetime cumulative gis of $1 million or more. is esteemed group
belongs to the highest level of membership within the organization.
e name of the society recognizes the symbolic event on June 15, 1952, when
Le Bonheur was dedicated. e keys to the hospital were tied to balloons that were
released into the sky on opening day, signifying that the doors of the hospital will never
be closed to any sick child.

Carol and Al LaRocca
“As a child growing up in an ethnic neighborhood in Newark, New Jersey, I
realized the difficulties that families faced without the help and support of more
fortunate people. at is why my wife and I believe it is important that all people,
regardless of their financial state, should support their community and make it a
better place to live. We know that Le Bonheur could not exist without the philanthropic involvement of donors and that giving to Le Bonheur is an investment in
the health and well-being of our community. We hope that our gi will enable
Le Bonheur to continue its work in research, treatment and surgical advancements to help children throughout the South and beyond. ere are few things in
life more satisfying than helping a child. To know that we are helping children in
some way is very meaningful to us.”

What inspired you to make
a gi to Le Bonheur?
“We have been blessed late in life with two
wonderful girls. Before their arrival, we
suffered losses through miscarriage and so
we feel particularly fortunate to now have
two healthy, beautiful girls. Childhood is
about discovery, learning and laughter.
rough our sponsorship of the rooop
metal flower garden art piece, we hope we
have contributed to helping provide an
environment at Le Bonheur where both
children and parents can do just that.”
What is your philosophy
about giving back?
“We have been blessed in our adult lives
and love our home city of Memphis, so we
each have made a commitment to give
back in areas where we feel we can make a
difference whether that is of time, talent or
financial resources.”

Good Hour Society
e Good Hour Society recognizes donors who have contributed a lifetime cumulative
giving level of $25,000 to $99,999.
is society reflects the French translation of Le Bonheur’s name. Le Bonheur (la bonne
heure) is French for “happiness” and is oen translated as “the good hour.” Le Bonheur’s
earliest fundraisers believed that each hour spent with children would be a “good hour.”
Membership in this society acknowledges those individuals whose gis ensure

Gifts of Securities
A gift of appreciated
securities held for more
than one year may
provide significant
benefits to you as a
contributor. For wire

Ginger and Tony Graves
What inspired you to make a gi to
Le Bonheur?
“When our second child, Grace, was born in 2007,
we had no idea that Le Bonheur would become such
a significant part of our lives over the next four years.
She spent a large part of her first two years at
Le Bonheur and over the last four years Le Bonheur
has truly become part of our family. It is reassuring
to know we have this wonderful asset in our community if you ever need it.”
Why is it important for our community
to support Le Bonheur?
“Memphis has so many wonderful community assets
and Le Bonheur is one that can touch all Mid-South
residents directly through their children, grandchildren, nieces and nephews.”
In what ways do you believe your gis to
Le Bonheur are making a difference?
“We have experienced first hand the difference that
donors make. Le Bonheur is what it is today through
their contributions and we see that in the care our
daughter receives there. We want our gi to have that
same impact and to help continue the great work that
has made such a difference in our daughter’s life.”
Grace and Mason Graves

RedWagon Society
e Red Wagon Society is composed of dedicated contributors who
make annual gis totaling $1,000 to $24,999.
is society takes its name from the red wagons used throughout Le Bonheur to transport patients during their
hospital visits. Membership in this society salutes the ongoing commitment made by these individuals which enables
Le Bonheur to provide the best health care possible to children.

Asan G. Tejwani
What motivated you to name Le Bonheur in your will?
“My family spent some time in refugee camps in India and survived on the generosity of various U.S. and
United Nations-based organizations. While in college, I was fortunate to help pay my way through a generous
scholarship from the Wattumul Foundation established by a successful Indian Sindhi businessman in Hawaii.
Cognizant of being a recipient of this generosity earlier in my life, I made it a practice to pay back as much as I
could within my means. Le Bonheur became a natural and obvious choice to be included in my will.”
Why is leaving a legacy at Le Bonheur important to you?
“I believe I’ll be leaving a legacy of love, kindness and faith in the future. It is important to me that dedicated
research, surgery and healing at Le Bonheur will eradicate or ameliorate the diseases that bring anguish to
parents who see their children suffer, dashing their hopes and depriving humanity of its most
valuable asset − our children.”
What do you hope the impact of your gi to Le Bonheur will be?
“It is my fervent hope that my gi inspires others to follow suit and helps create a pool
of resources that will grow and multiply, guaranteeing that Le Bonheur’s excellent
work in the betterment of quality of life continues for years to come without
financial constraints. To keep a lamp burning we need to keep putting
oil in it.”
In what ways do you believe your gi will make a difference in
the lives of children?
“For quality health care, research and to have the best dedicated minds, any institution
needs dependable sources of funding and reliable funding can be provided through
endowments, bequests and altruistic gestures. No amount is too small. Each gi will
make a tangible difference in the lives of children afflicted by debilitating or
threatening diseases by making available the best tools of health care.
He who has health has hope and he who has hope has everything.”
Why is philanthropy important?
“I believe that philanthropy is the life blood of human civilization and its evolution. We have never really lived until we have
done something for someone who can never repay.”
How does Le Bonheur’s mission
dovetail with your beliefs?
In celebration of the life of his
parents, Asan tejwani made a
generous gift to Le Bonheur.
“Le Bonheur’s mission to be a leader in
children’s health care, research
and advocacy in the Mid-South
is in sync with my belief that
healthy children are our
greatest asset. Children are our
future and have the right to
accessibility of the very best
possible health care available.”

Ann Clarke Harris
Why is philanthropy important?
Philanthropy is extremely important because nothing gets
done without it.
What is your philosophy about giving back?
When I was 10 years old, I helped my mother write thank-you
notes to Le Bonheur donors. Philanthropy is not just money but
also the time you put into it. I’ve always believed in the
saying,“Life is like a bank: you get out of it exactly what you put
into it.”
What inspired your first gi to Le Bonheur?
I followed in my mother’s footsteps and joined Le Bonheur Club
in 1970. I have given ever since.
Why do you continue to support Le Bonheur?
Why is it important for the community
to support Le Bonheur?
A children’s hospital is geared just for children. eir needs are
different and the services that can be provided to them at
Le Bonheur cannot be duplicated at an adult hospital.
What do you hope the impact of your consistent
giving to Le Bonheur will be?
To show others that someone like me, who is not wealthy, can
give religiously all year long and make an impact on
the future of all our children.
How does giving to Le Bonheur make you feel?
Giving to Le Bonheur is just a part of me. I learned by example.
I saw my mother work for Le Bonheur Club and what a difference it made. To me, Le Bonheur is worth the time and effort.
I give to organizations that help the most people and I give to
Le Bonheur because it helps more than 200,000 children
annually. Children are our future and if they aren’t well, there’s
no hope. If you can’t keep our children healthy, then it’s a
detriment to society as a whole.
