The
Chairman’s Message
I
t is with great pleasure that I send you this annual
report of the National Automobile Dealers Charitable
Foundation’s successful initiatives during 2012.
There were many, including:
•We gained 53 new Ambassadors, for a total of 617 at the
end of the year (see p. 2-3).
•The Frank E. McCarthy Memorial Fund, through Canine
Companions for Independence, provided service dogs to a
disabled child and to a wounded veteran (p. 11).
•More than 100 CPR training units were donated to firstresponse organizations across the country (p. 14).
• The Foundation established the Road Safety Grant program
to help dealerships defray the cost of sponsoring local safety
events (p. 14).
Yet our most memorable initiative was a reactive one: responding immediately to help
dealership employees in the Northeast whose lives were forever changed by Hurricane
Sandy in late October. The Foundation’s Emergency Relief Fund was established in 1992
for this very purpose. Within hours after the storm hit, the Foundation was raising
money and encouraging those in need to apply for aid. The first checks were delivered
within days.
Dealers and state and metro dealer associations from all over the country stepped up to
help with generous financial donations.
That was no surprise. It’s who we are and what we do. As my friend Neale Kuperman, a
dealer in the Sandy-ravaged metropolitan New York area said, “We might be competitors
in the marketplace, but when a disaster hits, we work together.”
Well said. Come to think of it, “We work together” could serve as an unofficial motto
for the Foundation.
Thanks to all of you for your continued support. Let’s keep working together.
Sincerely,
Robert P. Mallon

Foundation Ambassadors
T
he Ambassadors program named
53 new Ambassadors last year,
bringing the total number to 617.
“New-car and -truck dealers are always
giving back to their communities, and the
Ambassadors program provides a great
mechanism for perpetual giving,” said Annette Sykora, chairwoman of the Ambassadors program.

To become an Ambassador, a dealer, company, association or individual pledges a
tax-deductible donation of $10,000 to the
Foundation in their own name or in recognition of loved ones, living or deceased.
Then a grant is made to organizations of
the donor’s choice in amounts of at least
$1,500 every three years—forever. Dealers
who pledge three or more Ambassadorships
become Ambassadors of Distinction.
Each year, more than $250,000 is donated
to organizations in the public or private
sector, supporting a variety of causes, from
emergency medical services and education
to job training for adults with disabilities.
In 2012, 155 Ambassadors in 36 states presented grants to their chosen organizations.
Since 1994, more than $1 million has been
donated through the Ambassadors program
to organizations across the country.

ince 2002, the Frank E. McCarthy
Memorial Fund, has contributed
$190,000 to Canine Companions
for Independence, placing 19 skilled
service dogs with disabled children and
wounded veterans.
Dealer Barry Lundgren (left) and
U.S. Navy veteran Bren Denney
To help the Canine Companions pro-
gram, ADESA auctioned a 2010 HarleyDavidson Softail Deluxe motorcycle at
the 2012 NADA/ATD Convention in
Las Vegas. Massachusetts new-car dealer
Barry Lundgren placed the winning bid
of $18,750.
Bren Denney, a U.S. Navy veteran injured
in Singapore in 2008, was at the highprofile auction. He received his service
dog about three years ago. “There’s so
much more to the relationship between
the dogs and the impaired,” said Denney,
a resident of Alpine, Calif. “I did not
realize it right away, but the emotional joy
these animals provide far outweighs any
physical task they could ever do.”
“ADESA deserves credit for coming
up with a creative way to raise money
for a worthy cause,” said Bob Mallon,
chairman of the NADA Foundation,
which presented Canine Companions
with four $10,000 donations in 2012.
Frank E. McCarthy served as NADA
president for more than 30 years.

ince 1998 grants of $7,000 have been presented each year from the Joseph J. Sanchez
Memorial Fund for students’ emergency needs and from the John P. Winston, Sr.,
Memorial Fund for the study of ethics discipline to a private/independent college or
university in each of the four NADA regions. Since 1990 and 1992, respectively, the Sanchez
and Winston Memorial Funds were gifted at a rate of $5,000 or $3,000. In 2012, it was decided
to continue designating additional gifts of $2,000 (in the case of the Sanchez Fund) and $4,000
(for the Winston Fund) to bring earlier, lesser grants up to the $7,000 level. Ten of those
affected colleges/universities received grants in 2012.
Joseph J. Sanchez Grants
In 1985 the Joseph J. Sanchez
Memorial Fund was established to
honor the memory of the former vice
president and general manager of
the Oldsmobile Division of General
Motors and first president of Saturn Corporation.
Grants worth $528,000 have been dispersed as
of 2012.

John P. Winston, Sr., Grants
In 1990 the John P. Winston, Sr.,
Memorial Fund was established for
the study of ethics discipline. The
fund honors NADA’s late corporate
secretary, an accomplished attorney
who was dedicated to ethical practices. Grants worth
$490,000 have been dispersed as of 2012.

emergency relief fund
I
mmediately after Hurricane Sandy last
October, NADA donated $1 million to
the foundation’s Emergency Relief Fund
to jump-start a national fund-raising campaign
for dealership employees who suffered damage
to their homes. The fund provides financial
assistance to dealership employees affected by
natural disasters.
In just two short months, more than $1.5 million
was raised. In addition to NADA’s $1 million
contribution, another $500,000 was contributed
by individual dealers, as well as state and metro
dealer associations.
By the end of 2012, in the aftermath of Hurricane
Sandy, 537 dealership employees, mostly from
New York and New Jersey, had received $338,700
in relief assistance from the NADA Foundation’s
Emergency Relief Fund.
Since the fund was established in 1992, nearly
$5 million has been provided to more than 7,700
dealership employees in need.

Medical Grants
Road Safety Grants
or more than 37 years, new-car and -truck dealers
have donated Little Annie cardiopulmonary
resuscitation (CPR) training manikins to
hospitals, police and fire departments, and schools
across the country from the Medical Grants program of
the NADA Foundation. In 2012, more than100 training
units were donated to organizations in 19 states.
he Foundation expanded its list of philanthropic
initiatives in 2012 to include a new grant
program to help new-car dealers start or
promote road safety initiatives in their communities.
F
Since the program’s inception in 1975, more than
4,600 manikins — with a value of about $3 million
have been donated to organizations in all 50 states and
Washington, D.C.
T
The Road Safety Grant Program provides dealers up
to $500 to sponsor a safety event at their dealerships.
The grants are provided as a matching contribution for
expenses incurred by dealers.
Dealers can use these
grants to host events
to install child passenger safety seats, promote teen and senior
driver safety, educate
consumers about
r ural road safety,
or combat distracted
driving.

Survivors Relief Fund
The Legacy Program
he Foundation was among the first
organizations to support 9/11 families with
contributions to Scholarship America, making
it possible for the sons and daughters of Americans
killed or permanently disabled during the attacks
in New York, Washington, D.C., and Shanksville,
Pennsylvania, to attend college.
he Foundation’s Legacy Program is an
exceptional vehicle for deliberative estate
planning and conveys the vital community
service role that franchised new-car and -truck dealers
render for the benefit of so many citizens.
T
Initially, $1.6 million was raised through the
Foundation’s Survivors Relief Fund. Since its inception
the fund has provided $648,000 in scholarship aid to
105 students.
14
T
The Legacy Program was established 12 years ago
to recognize those who have committed to the
Foundation in their estate planning. It is helpful to
people who wish to take advantage of the Foundation’s
501(c)(3) status. Specific designations may be proposed
by donors in their plans, or a pledge to the Legacy
Program can be specified for any
of the Charitable Foundation’s
programs. In this way, members
of the retail automotive family
are given a unique opportunity
to make bequests that celebrate
their life’s work.
