COVER SPOTLIGHT:
Fete de la Musique:
Beats for the streets!
The Fete de la Musique was conceived by American
musician, Joel Cohen, while employed by France
Musique, the national French radio station. He proposed
an all-night music celebration during summer solstice
which was recognized by the French Minister of Culture
and subsequently held in 1982.
The Fete’s purpose is to promote amateur and professional
musicians of every genre to perform in the streets and to
offer it FREE of charge so that it is accessible to all. This
unique event has since spread to 110 countries and 250
cities around the globe including Laguna Beach!
The Laguna Beach Sister Cities Association is responsible
for creating the Laguna Fete in 2008 where they’ve since
received an Art Star Award for Best New Arts Program.
They choose the performers and map out approximately
37 downtown locations, allotting space for pedestrian
sidewalk traffic. Red, Blue and White colors represent the
French flag which mark the locations en route. Saddleback
Golf Cart, an 8 year sponsor, loans a cart to committee
members Pat Kollenda and Susan Davis affectionately
known as the “Decibel Divas” to provide help when
necessary and ensure that decibel levels are in accordance
with city ordinances.
Performers all the way from Northern California to San
Diego return year after year with an array of musical talent.
Even an Elvis impersonator has been added to the roster.
Douglas Miller will stroll with his violin, the Budros family
Grey Hill Gospel String Band shown performing.
will perform at Chicos and April Walsh will sing French
ballads of Edith Piaf in the Ocean/Forest laneway.
To be eligible to perform in the Fete you must fill out an
application form online on the Sister Cities Association
website and you will be chosen on a first come first serve
basis. Returning performers will however receive precedence.
The Fete begins Sat. June 20th at 1pm. An Opening
Ceremony at Main Beach will commence with a speech from
a member of the French Consulate as well as our mayor, Bob
Whalen. The Star Spangled Banner will be sung by 10 year
old Sydney Haik, followed by a rendition of La Marseillaise
(French Anthem) by Grade 12 student, Marlie Becker. The
Laguna Concert Band will then play a rousing “Swing Set of
Laguna” and by 4pm an informal Closing Ceremony will take
place back at Main Beach where all the bands are invited to
participate in a sing-a-long to conclude the day.
Fortunately you do not have to live in France for Fete de la
Musique as voices of song and music echo around the world.
It’s a wonderful way to participate in global friendship.

City of Laguna Beach: Open for business
The City of Laguna Beach Open House gave us a chance to chat with
employees and volunteers of our fair town and learn what they enjoy most
about their jobs.
Recently appointed Chief of Police, Laura Farinella, (left) is so warm and
welcoming it’s no surprise her favorite aspect of the job is interacting with
the community and listening to their needs and concerns. With summer
fast approaching she strongly endorses the “Look to Live” campaign aimed
at pedestrian and cyclist safety and encourages everyone to lock up their valuables wherever
they are. Not surprisingly Laura spends her coffee breaks in town talking to people.
Marine Protection Officer, Jeremy Frimond, (right) wears many different
hats but what he enjoys most is the “Meet the Bus” program where he
is educating inner city school kids on the importance of our ecosystem
and showing them the tide pools firsthand. When he’s not at work he’s
either back at the beach, hiking trails in South Laguna or golfing at
The Ranch.
Volunteers Alx Simmons and Matt Lawson
(left) from the Laguna Beach chapter of
C.E.R.T. (Community Emergency Response
Team) were offering disaster preparedness tips and encouraging
citizens to enroll in this rewarding program. Both enjoyed
participating with several Orange County Police Depts. in a
“mock mob” scenario as victims of a mock plane crash at John
Wayne Airport.
Lisa Mansour, (left) Chair of the Arts Commission, loves the day
when they collect over 100 pieces of art for the “Art That’s Small at
City Hall” competition. As long as you meet the size requirements
and pay the nominal fee anyone can have their art displayed in City
Hall. Cultural Arts Manager, Sian Poeschl, (on right) takes pride in
planning ALL the creative events throughout the year.

Comedian Louie Anderson is
coming to the Laguna Playhouse
June 12th for one night only. As a
36 year veteran of comedy, Louie
traditionally performs in venues that
seat in excess of 2,000 people. Rita
Rudner, a long time friend, suggested a performance in
Laguna due to its uniquely intimate atmosphere which he
is very excited about.
Louie grew up in Minnesota amidst a lively family of 10
siblings. His father was a Jazz musician and his mother was
the type of mom who was happy as long as her kids were
happy. Humor was always a defining characteristic in their
household and as a kid people would just laugh at him
even when he claimed to be serious so the transition to
stage was a natural extension.
In the early days (’80s), comedians would audition at the
Comedy Store in LA in the hope to be “discovered” for an
appearance on The Johnny Carson Show. Comedians waited
their whole life to do that show and when Louie finally
got the chance he was more excited than nervous but you
didn’t want to look bad in front of Johnny. As Louie puts it,
“Carson was the comedian’s comedian. He was the comic
whisperer who launched so many aspiring entertainers”
and Louie was no exception. His set was a success and from
that day forward he never looked back.
Aside from Louie’s laid back, guy next door presence, the
most glaring feature of his performances is how squeaky
clean the material is. It’s often a satire of his family life
in Minnesota but you’ll never hear any off color jokes or
cursing in his sets. His humor cleverly transcends all ages
and backgrounds.
The fact that he’s been fortunate enough to earn a living
doing what he loves is not lost on him. He’s full of gratitude
and takes the work very seriously. His goal with every
performance is to give 100%, have his audience forget their
troubles, laugh, and leave with fond memories of their own
childhood. When an audience lingers at the end of a show or
is heard discussing some of his material he knows he’s struck
a chord and has accomplished his goal.
Louie tours about 2 to 3 times per month and is busy
working on his fourth book. An ideal day outside of comedy
is usually spent writing, visiting friends and family or
hanging out watching The Clippers play some B-Ball.
