THE CORPORAL WORKS OF MERCY
As we focus our attention on the merciful heart of Jesus where
love is poured into our hearts especially through prayer and the Eucharist,
we are to let his merciful love flow through our hearts towards anyone in
need whom we meet along life’s way. This week our focus will center on
the corporal works of mercy.
The corporal works of mercy are found in the teaching of Christ
and they give us model for how we should treat others as if they were
Christ in disguise. They are charitable actions by which we help our
neighbors in their bodily needs. They respond to the basic needs of
humanity as we journey together through this life. In the practice of the
works of mercy, there is both a personal and a wider social dimension
and we cannot neglect either one. Like the spiritual works of mercy, the
corporally works of mercy are also traditionally
seven in number.
Feed the Hungry: There are many
people in this world who go without food. When
we waste so much food, think of how good
stewardship practices of your own food habits
can benefit others who do not have those same
resources. We can help the hungry in a simple
way by donating food to the Parish food pantry
or take time to educate ourselves about the problem of hunger in the
world and how we can alleviate such.
Give drink to the Thirsty: Many people do not have access to
clean water and suffer from lack of this basic necessity. We should
support the effort of those working towards greater accessibility of this
essential resource. We need to accomplish this work of mercy through
our role as voters by supporting clean water policies to ensure that there
will be clean water for future generations to drink. Our usage of water
should also be put into proper consideration.
Shelter the Homeless: There are many circumstances that could
lead someone becoming a person without a home. Christ encourages us to
go out and meet those without homes affirming their worth and help them
seek a resolution to the challenges they face. There are well established
groups that specialize in relieving the problem of homelessness.
Supporting their work is always a great way to practice this work of
mercy. Groups like Habitat for Humanity enable volunteers to actually
lend a hand in building brand new homes for the poor and
underprivileged.
Visit the Sick: Often times those who are sick are forgotten or
avoided. In spite of their illness, these individuals still have much to offer
to those who take the time to visit and comfort them. There are many
who are sick not from physical illness but from social isolation. We think
of the elderly in our community who, whether at home or in long term
care facilities live in geographical isolation from their loved ones. These
socially isolated elderly are not far from us. They often live around the
corner and are members of our parish.
Visit the Prisoners: People in prison are still people made in the
image and likeness of God. No matter what someone has done, they
deserve the opportunity to hear the word of God and find truth in the
message of Christ. Visiting the prisoners does not mean being “soft on
crime”. We may throw away the key of the place of incarceration as some
would suggest but not the person. Punishment deters and quarantines but
friendship and prayer have the capacity to reform and to heal.
Cloth the Naked: In the gospel of Luke when the people came
to John the Baptist and asked him what they must do? He answered that
“anyone who has two tunics must share with one who has none” (Luke 3:
10-11) Jesus made us to understand that one of the criteria for judgment
in the gospel of Matthew is to clothe the naked (Matthew 25:36) We can
fulfill this by going through our closets and finding clothes to donate to
the needy or buy new ones for them.
Bury the Dead: Funerals give us the opportunity to grieve and
show others support during difficult times. Through our prayers and
actions during this time we show respect for life, which is always a gift
from God and comfort to those who mourn. We have to make sure that
our friends and relatives have a proper funeral service. We can send cards
to people who recently lost their loved ones; we can also visit the
cemetery and pray for the repose of their souls. Offering masses for their
eternal repose is something very powerful and commendable.

desperdiciamos tanta comida, debemos adoptar mejores

Following Jesus through the Stations of the
Cross. Jesus was just like us and tried his
whole life to do what God wanted. But not
everyone liked the message that Jesus
brought. Those who did not want to change

made him suffer on the cross. But Jesus
died trusting that God would be with him

shows us how to live as his followers.

from the moment of conception in the mother’s womb to natural death.
Constantly promoting a culture of Pro-life, like participating in the 2nd
Annual One Walk LA. As well as the Rosary for life laying 155 crosses to

thanks the Respect for Life Ministry for turning hearts and minds to a
culture of Life.
