JULY 2015 - Jumbulance Trust
JULY
2015
WHO ARE WE?
The Jumbulance Trust is a small Charitable Trust with 2 unique specialist vehicles, part coach part ambulance, which are
specifically designed and equipped to make it possible for those who are disabled or very ill to travel throughout the UK and
Europe on holiday or Pilgrimage or even just a day trip. Each “Jumbulance” can accommodate a maximum of 23, to include
10-12 disabled or sick passengers, each accompanied by a carer plus Nurses or Doctors if required.
OUR VISION:
A society in which adults and children with disabilities and severe illnesses are able to maximise their quality of life through
social and travel opportunities.
OUR AIM:
The Jumbulance Trust exists to make travel possible for those who by reason of their disabilities or illnesses find most means of
transport impossible to contemplate.
MID HERTS GOLF CLUB
On Friday, 12 June, three very determined and hardy lady golfers from the
Club, with a combined age of 229 years, completed an all day golf marathon
of 54 holes. The Lady Captain, Carole Tipple, accompanied by Ann Nash and
Diane Else nicknamed themselves the ‘Parkinsons Close Pensioners’
The marathon started at seven o'clock on the morning of Friday 12 June and
they finally completed the 54 holes challenge ten hours later at quarter to
five in the afternoon, with just a couple of short breaks. Many members of
the golf club and friends sponsored them and turned out to caddy and
support them on the day. Their efforts have already raised £2618 from
donations. The ladies achievement was both acknowledged and fittingly
finished off with an Indian themed dining evening at the club. The evening
including a raffle which raised a further £475. Earlier in the week the ladies
section also held a cake sale which raised a further £225.
On the night a cheque for £3318 was presented to Jumbulance founding
member, Kathryn Salvesen MBE, who said: "We are so delighted with the generous funds raised by Mid-Herts Golf
Club. This fantastic contribution will enable us to take a group of ten disabled or unwell people along with ten
volunteer helpers to visit the Italian Tyrol later this September, funding the return trip in the Jumbulance."
Jumbulance is the Lady Captain's nominated charity for the year and Carole and members of Mid-Herts Golf Club
have already raised over four thousand pounds for this worthy cause since she took office in November 2014.

ACCESSIBLE TRAVEL TO ALKMAAR—APRIL 2015
In association with Accessible Travel, a specialist tour operator with many years experience in the field of holidays for the less
mobile, the Jumbulance left Heathrow early one April morning bound for Holland via the Dover ferry in eager anticipation. The
group arrived at Hotel de Palatijin, in the historic town of Alkmaar in the late afternoon to relax before an exciting schedule of
sightseeing in the days ahead. The hotel matched the needs of the group very well with spacious rooms equipped to a high
standard for the disabled traveller and tasty local cuisine on offer. Highlights included a visit to the impressive Keukenhof
Gardens with the huge sight of millions of tulips, daffodils, hyacinths and other spring flowers; ‘ a cacophony of colour and the
aroma was overwhelming’ said Sheena, and an exciting daytrip to Amsterdam with a guided tour and time to relax on the
canal cruise. The traditional cheese market at Alkmaar offered sights of hundreds of cheeses and cheese porters with their
colourful straw hats! At the end of the holiday, there was praise for the efforts of Colin, the driver; the Jumbulance as an
excellent form of travel; Bev, the tour manager; and the organisers Accessible Travel for arranging a well planned and
enjoyable holiday.
“Just a note to say many thanks for organising the
excellent holiday to Holland. The included trips really
gave us a chance to see places and do things that we
would never have been able to do on our own.
I must comment on our driver Colin, we found him to be
most helpful, courteous, cheerful and thoughtful
throughout the journey. Again, many thanks to all!”

I am writing to offer The Jumbulance Trust an enormous “thank you” for
our day out with the Jumbulance last month. As you know our residents
took off for a day’s outing to Woburn Safari Park on a dark and grey
Wednesday morning, but the weather didn’t deter us and everyone had a
fantastic time. Brendon was super, and made the day fly past without
any hitches. Natalie Chaston, Events Coordinator, MENCAP, Harpenden

BERKSHIRE GROUP TO HOLLAND, JULY 2014
The Berkshire Group is developing its abilities to make travel possible specifically for younger travellers and, following on from
the initial success in Norfolk 2013, they embarked on a respite holiday a bit further afield in 2014 and went to the Hotel Rijper
in Eilanden, Holland.
“Lucy looked after all our various needs (inc Halal food!!) and was even able to provide what seemed to be the European pillow
mountain for the comfort of one of our group. Lucy and her staff are all very attentive and quick to respond – they understand
our particular types of requirements and form a key part of the team making the holiday possible. The group was very special
too and, even with Brendan and David, the average age of everyone on the trip was just over 24!! This means the group is
really busy, really excitable and really chatty. When I say “chatty, you had to be there to understand!
The trips organised included a memorable day in Amsterdam with its canal boat trip and shopping. We visited all sorts of
places in the city that day!! Other highlights of the trip were visits to the famous Dolphinarium at Haderwijk and day at the
seaside (some memorable “firsts” that day!!). Because electric wheelchairs don’t agree with sea, sand and salt, we had to swap
over chairs and do the necessary transfers to sort out paddling for everyone who wanted to.
In the evenings at the hotel we had all sorts of entertainment….a quiz, a race night, a Karaoke night (where IS Alice?) and a final
night BBQ party. You would also be amazed at how much fun there is to be had having races around the hotel car-park in a
pedal go-kart we happened to come across.
Thanks to the entire team, young and even younger, whose hard work made the trip possible and so much fun. Please take a
look at the photographs on the Berkshire Group website Jumbulance2003.webs.com to get some idea of the fun which is to be
had. “

GUERNSEY JUMBULANCE GROUP—WINDERMERE, LAKE DISTRICT
Lake District Steam Train
At Tatton Gardens
“We had a great week. The Winderemere Manor Hotel was ideal. Our group visited Tatton Park, went shopping in Manchester City Centre
and saw ‘Annie Get Your Gun’ at the Manchester Opera House. The Jumbulance facilities and cleanliness were excellent. We also sailed
on Windermere from Lakeside to Bowness Bay and from there we visited the World of Beatrix Potter. The Lakeland Motor Museum was
also a highlight. The group also enjoyed a drive in the Yorkshire Dales. There is so much to do in the area that we would consider a return
trip using the same hotel”.

FUNDRAISING ACTIVITIES
Coldharbour Lane Club in Harpenden continue to support the Jumbulance and after a BBQ, raffle and
sale of homemade cakes and plants over the May bank holiday weekend raised £800.
Since last autumn, 5th Harpenden scouts (above left and middle) have been undertaking various
fundraising events to raise money for the Jumbulance Trust having been lucky enough to climb aboard
a coach themselves during one of their weekly meetings. The first event was a sponsored row
following several sessions at the gym to improve technique and increase stamina. The next event was a
little less healthy; an Easter cake sale when the scouts decorated cupcakes (and themselves!) and sold
them to friends and family. Finally the scouts ran a stall at the Harpenden Carnival where carnival
goers had to putt a ball onto a £5 note, that proved to be a very difficult challenge to all those budding
golfers! The scouts hope to organise many more events in the future. A big Thank You to the scouts for
their interest and understanding of the needs of the disabled traveller and for raising £260 from their
efforts to date, well done indeed!!
On 12th March, the Jumbulance visited Princess Helena’s school in Preston, Herts (above right). After a
talk in the morning assembly all the pupils in the school had the opportunity of a guided tour around
the vehicle and showed a keen interest in the work of the Trust and asked many interesting questions.
Thank you to Megan & Freya and the students of the Citizenship Course for raising awareness of the
Trust in the local community and for raising £160 from the non-uniform day!!
Huw John, Sarah Shillibier and Matt Dampier took part in the Wokingham Half Marathon to raise funds
for a young person’s trip to Austria in July (below right)
Tony & Linda Coley organised another successful Quiz and Curry Night in Hemel raising £724 for the
Jumbulance (bottom left).

FUNDRAISING ACTIVITIES CONTINUED
For the 3rd year running, a Jumbulance team bravely entered the Bradbeers Romsey Relay Marathon
where a team of 10 competitors each completed one tenth of the marathon distance, by running,
power walking or wheeling, to safely bring the baton home. With team Manager Chris Chisholm
keeping everyone on their toes, the team consisting of Carol Canning, Leanne Watters, Kyle, Helen
Carmichael, Jane & Sam Vennick, Max Pybus, Kate Rowe (below middle), Robin (below right) &
Charlotte Cattle & Suzi Prince & Dad (below left), rose to the challenge. Thank you to all our sponsors,
who have helped to raise more than £1800 for the Trust, and those who helped to make it such a
worthwhile and enjoyable day with so many other charities benefitting too. The pain was worth it!
NORTH YORKSHIRE—HOLLAND MAY 2015
“The North Yorkshire Group went for a holiday in May to Holland. My husband John and I were part of the group.
We started with a journey to Hull to go on the overnight ferry to Zeebrugge, then continued to our hotel set in a
lovely part of Holland. The Hotel De Rijp has great access and facilities for wheelchairs, every room being wheelchair
accessible and lots of space (British hoteliers please follow suit). For our first meal a BBQ was offered and accepted
as it was a lovely warm day. We sat out on the patio watching a swan, heron and ducks on the water surrounding
the hotel whilst we ate, what a wonderful start to a wonderful holiday.
We had outings to places of interest each day, My favourites were Keurkenhof Gardens, Marken (an old
picturesque fishing village) and canal boat ride, other outings were Zaase Schans Village (windmills, museum, crafts
and cafes) unique and good to experience, Alkmaar Cheese Market, Rijksmuseum Amsterdam. We shared the
experiences with old friends that have been on a previous holiday like us also made new friends, we enjoyed
companionship and laughter. The organisation and support was first class as we have always experienced. With
drivers Brendan and Colin, leaders and
nurses Chris, Cynthia and Julie seeing to
our security and well being and making
the holiday enjoyable. Even the weather
obliged by being dry, warm and often
sunny.
On the return journey to catch the ferry
home, we called at a farm to see cheese
and clogs made in the traditional
way. Then back home, revitalised and
ready to restart our usual lives, saying
good bye to every- one with mixed
emotions, glad to be back home and
sorry the holiday is over but looking
forward to meeting up again in the
future.” Tina Crewe, Carer

VACANCIES
TRUSTEES
We are looking to recuit volunteer Trustees to be full members of our Board to help
lead our Charity. The Board has traditionally been made up of people associated with
the Jumbulance and they will remain in a majority but we are seeking volunteers to
strengthen our board by filling skills gaps. We are particularly keen to hear from those
with a background in marketing and PR and/or Fundraising Skills. Experience is not
required but potential Trustees must be committed to developing an understanding of
their responsibilities as a Trustee and providing practical support where possible. Our
Board meets four times a year traditionally in Hertfordshire, expenses are reimbursed
for travel. If you think you or someone you know may be interested do get in touch by
email [email protected]
PCV DRIVING OPPORTUNITIES FOR 2016
The Trust anticipates a busy year of bookings in 2016 with group holidays in the UK and
abroad. We very much rely on the support and enthusiasm of our co drivers who work
with Brendan & Colin and we are looking for new drivers to join the team.
The opportunity for an experienced and empathetic driver would be to accompany our
regular drivers, in accordance with standard driving regulations, on at least one 7-10
day holiday per year, with our volunteer carers and disabled travellers. Full training on
the Jumbulance, our specialist Van Hool coach, will be given including use of the
platform lift. Remuneration & expenses provided and if you would like further
information, please contact Robin Cattle by email [email protected].
A Jumbulance Holiday will provide an enjoyable and worthwhile experience.
SKI GROUP TO AUSTRIA, FEBRUARY 2015
"Thank you" are two words which seem so small in significance; even if
said in the deepest, most genuine and heartfelt way, nothing I say could
ever come close to expressing just how incredibly grateful I am. Skiing
independently for the first time is something I will never forget, it was
quite simply one of the greatest achievements of my life. You are a truly
remarkable group of people who have
helped me to accomplish so much against
all odds. This past week has
undeniably been one of the hardest times
in my life after losing my Dad. Yet I can
honestly say, because of you it has also
been one of the most uplifting, inspiring
and all round encouraging. You are some of the funniest, most caring and
compassionate people I know. Thank you so much to everyone involved in helping
to make this trip possible from the Jumbulance Trust, to Disability Snowsport
UK and Fat Face Foundation. You truly have made an immeasurable difference to
my life in ways I can't explain” Sarah Kidd, Huddersfield

HAMPSHIRE TO LOURDES OCTOBER 2014
“How can I thank you for accepting me for the Jumbulance trip
to Lourdes and for all the loving care I received. Everyone was
so interesting and good fun so I really had a great experience
and created so many happy memories.”
“I am writing to say thank you for the kindness that was shown
to me last week. The love and respect you showed meant so
much. I so enjoyed the week and I was able to take part in
things which would not have been possible without the support
of the helpers on the Jumbulance. Thank you for being so
positive and flexible, adapting to the individual needs of
everyone. You showed an amazing understanding of my
difficulties while still allowing me to maintain a feeling of
independence. I feel I have really benefitted from the trip and have come home with an added feeling of spiritual
enrichment and a massive feeling of well being.”
“Thank you so much for including me on the Jumbulance trip. A very interesting and different experience and my problems
pale into insignificance by comparison. I honour the helpers patience and good humour. With many thanks to your
organisation.”
“Thank you so much for giving my husband such a great holiday to Lourdes. He really did enjoy himself and it made it so
much easier for me to let him go knowing how well he would be looked after by you and your team. “

WAYS TO DONATE
For those who are fit and able the thought of travelling by whatever means, by road, rail, air or sea, presents no
problem. But for those who are disabled, unwell, often terminally, or elderly and lonely the almost universal lack
of appropriate facilities presents difficulties and problems that are daunting and for most make the prospect of a
holiday or outing impossible to contemplate. It is these shortcomings that the Jumbulance Trust aims to address
in three ways:

First by providing specially designed and comprehensively equipped vehicles which are part coach, part
ambulance, with facilities appropriate for those particular needs.

Secondly by providing volunteers to care for them to include Doctors and Nurses where needed.

Thirdly by subsidising in part the costs of using the vehicles in order to keep them affordable.
All of these aims are only possible to achieve with the generous help of our supporters and donors.
MAKE A SINGLE GIFT
by cheque, BACS transfer or through our JustGiving site www.justgiving.com/jumbulancetrust
MAKE A REGULAR GIFT
You can make a regular gift through standing order. This is a simple, safe and cost effective way to give and keeps
our administration costs to a minimum, allowing us to make the very best use of your donation.
DONATION IN MEMORY
You may want to request that well-wishers make a donation to Jumbulance Trust in your memory, perhaps
instead of buying flowers.
